LYCOS | SCALDING | 2
Tumblr media
SCALDING | moon | Pt.2
“You’ve kept her from me long enough.”
there was never a heat. only rut. wednesday still doesn’t know what to do about enid. nor ajax, for the matter. because he isn’t a bane. not like xavier.
[41,001] | [10/08/2023]
alright! for this chapter and the next, it’s just updating when i’m done, then i’ll go on an extended hiatus to actually write the rest and post on a schedule.
and good lord this chapter was…a pain. lol.
anyway. hopefully tumblr is nice to me. don’t think it will but whatever.
hope you enjoy!
:)
(read more for chapter teaser.)
AO3 1.2 First Chapter: AO3 | First Post
“Apologize.”
With every Addams is a chosen instrument for death — the honor therein.
Your dear father is straightforward and blunt, so he takes to rapiers. Uncle Fester is (or was) likewise, though rather than rhythm, his hand kept itself erratic.
Mother’s instrument blossoms in silence. There are her words, then the poison to a drink. Her victims are few, though they are, always, a pointed remark. Grandmama, she is … similar, though she falls back to scripture and incantation as well.
“I— I-I can’t—! Oh my god, I— I can’t breathe—!” “Apologize to him.”
Pugsley has trinkets. Grenades. Rifles. Mines or the occasional tank. It doesn’t matter. If he can tinker with his instrument, that satisfies him plenty.
“He isn’t—! F-Fuck—!” (The jock wept. Naked, and bruised, with his head boiling… He truly was a disappointment.) “H-He’s not h-here—?!” “I’ll play courier. Apologize.”
As for you, your family likens you to antique. Namely blades, though you’ve collected the most heinous array of boards and maces. Curiosity has also guided you to the complex; more than gadgetry, you are drawn to practices, and technology. Old technology. There’s artistry to them. Artistry that your family appreciates, it’s just that you do above them all.
Yet…, a contradiction.
“I can’t— I— I can’t breathe…! Pl— Ple—ase—!” “Fine then.” (You loosened your grip. He slacked for his gulp of air. Then you stamped his head into wet tile.) “Now apologize.” (Blood erupted. It seeped far.) “To my brother. Apologize.”
Rather than antique, and complex, you favor primitive. Your very hands are your instruments.
Just as they had been beneath a fateful moon, where the life drained from his eyes. And beneath a yellow sun as well, where the world blurred, seethed Vampyric, behind cut fringe.
And so too your last hour at Lakeview High, where the locker room’s shower pranced down your back, and you were struck by the sheer ease of this vengeance. All it took for the football team to kneel was to find them unannounced, from an empty locker, after practice.
“I’m— I’M SORRY! I’LL LEAVE HIM ALONE!” (His head cracked ceramic by the second heel.) “Again. Apologize again.”
There was only a telephone cable in your hands.
They knew to be terrified. You had to give them that.
“I’M SORRY! HOLY FUCK, I— I’M SORRY!”
It’s a shame that stunt had ricocheted you from the police station, to home, then right to Nevermore.
“WEDNESDAY! FUCK! I’M SORRY! WE’LL LEAVE HIM ALONE!”
You wanted to see the captain’s face after the fact. You wanted to envision the colors which bloomed — beyond what Pugsley wrote you weeks into the fall semester. Because with any instrument, there is a piece. And for a sculptor to not witness her artistry…?
“She … isn’t here right now.”
It was cruel.

April 1938: Fishing & Station Wagon Riding
April 1, 1938 – Buffalo Evening News
Talking about ill health brings me to Carole Lombard and the cure suggested by her doctor – exercise, early-to-bed, and lots of sunshine. He forgot to add “Clark Gable,” who has just returned to Hollywood from a masculine hunting jaunt to Mexico…
April 5, 1938 – The Enid Morning News
Carole Lombard’s Food Taboo Is Tomatoes While Gable Abhors Clams
Helpful hints to Hollywood hostesses: If you’re entertaining Carole Lombard, never have tomatoes on the dinner menu. During the filming of “True Confession,” the blonde star had to consume no less than 42 lettuce and tomato sandwiches, and she’s not been able to bring herself to touch tomatoes since then.
Clark Gable’s pet aversion in the matter of edibles is clam juice, so remember that the next time he drops around for dinner.
April 5, 1938 – Lancaster New Era
Carole Lombard is knitting a sweater but she says this one is not for Clark Gable.
April 5, 1938 – Star Tribune
Carole Lombard’s pet name for Clark Gable is “Pa.” Cute, eh?
April 8, 1938 – Courier Post
Chatter in Hollywood: The mysterious station wagon moving rapidly along the road to San Diego yesterday at 2 a.m. was on its way to Coronado for a deep sea fishing expedition. Driving the car was Clark Gable and sitting next to him was Carole Lombard.
In the back seats sat the Buster Colliers and the Harry Fleishmans hanging on for dear life as the big car took the turns. The happy party took along sandwiches, thermos bottles of coffee and fried chicken and expected to return late after traveling more than 200 miles for one day’s fishing. We’ll let you know later whether they brought back any barracudas.
April 8, 1938 – The Ogden Standard
Good At Alibis
We’ve often wondered what Carole Lombard gave [Clark Gable] this past Christmas. They always exchange “gaggy gifts.” At the time Clark was playing the title role in “Test pilot,” so Lombard sent him two round-trip tickets for a flight in the tourist advertising blimp that floats aimlessly over Los Angles. Clark then sent her a scooter to go places in a hurry.
Of all the film stars – Clark’s the most boyish and best of company.
April 11, 1938 – The Courier
Snapshots of Hollywood
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard brought back 26 fish, one of them looked like a whale but tasted better.
April 12, 1938 – Star Tribune
Carole Lombard, who joyously welcomes weight gains in ounce dribbles, has put on four pounds since finishing her last picture, and her friends now can have just about anything they want – that is, anything but Gable.
April 13, 1938 – The Minneapolis Journal
Tumblr media
The ‘Dignified’ Miss Lombard
Dignity and Carole Lombard simply aren’t allergic, numerous recent motion pictures have testified. Here is Miss Lombard in a carefree moment, out for a run or a stroll with Beau Brummel, her English sheepdog. Miss Lombard is now working on “Fools For Scandal.”
April 15, 1938 – Evening Star
Sports item: Fragile Carole Lombard makes a sucker out of strong Clark Gable at tennis…
April 16, 1938 – San Francisco Examiner
Clark Gable telephones Carole Lombard four times a day instead of twice a day…
April 16, 1938 – Nashville Banner
Walking down Hollywood Boulevard the other day, I couldn’t help wishing some of the fans could have been with me; for once, the stars seemed to be out in force. …
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard waved from Clarks’ station wagon…
April 18, 1938 – Pittsburgh Sun
Carole Lombard and Clark Gable will do a sketch, making love according to various directors, at the Tri-Guild ball this Thursday evening…
April 19, 1938 – The Evening Independent
The famous Valentine Ford which Carole Lombard gave to Clark Gable crops up in the news again. After turning down numerous offers for the machine, Gable finally presented it to the brother of an MGM publicity man. However, it is Harlan Fengler, the race driver, who now turns up with the car. He has rebuilt the motor, stripped the chassis and will write another chapter in the Ford’s unusual history by using it for a speed trial at Muroc Dry Lake.
April 22, 1938 – The Gazette
Jimmie Fidler in Hollywood
Just out of curiosity, I would like to know who is giving Carole Lombard bad advice. Until a few months ago she was the most down-to-earth young lady whose name ever blazed in lights. She talked to anyone and everyone, cooperate with every studio request, and, in short, displayed so much common sense that I classed her as a Hollywood miracle.
Seemingly her attitude has changed. Publicity men are beginning to complain that she is “hard to handle.” She has announced that she will grant no more interviews to the press, and she is being accused of “temperament.”
I think Carole ought to devote a quiet evening to a heart-to-heart talk with the happy-go-lucky, lovable girl she used to be. I believe she has too much fundamental honesty to antagonize the people who have helped her climb to the top.
April 24, 1938 – Pittsburgh Sun
Think nothing of it if you see Carole Lombard and Clark Gable stopping by the valley post office to pick up Carole’s latest bulletin from her correspondence course from the University of California. Two hours later you’ll probably find them at the local movie and at the leading ice cream parlor afterward.
April 25, 1938 – The Ogden Standard
Carole Lombard and Clark Gable drove in Clark’s station wagon to San Diego for deep-sea fishing…
April 26, 1938 -  The Los Angeles Times
Carole Lombard Travels Incognito
Carole Lombard stepped out of her real-life character when she played the role of Kay Winters in “Fools for Scandal,” the Mervyn Leroy comedy that opens Thursday at Warner Brothers Hollywood and Downtown theaters.
Making her first appearance on the Warner lot, Miss Lombard portrays a leading movie star so popular that she has to wear a dark wig in order to get about unobserved.
In real life the actress has often resorted to ruses of a similar nature, generally in Hollywood.
Showing with “Fools for Scandal” will be the “headline” expose. “Accidents Will Happen” featuring Ronald Reagan, Gloria Blondell, Dick Purcell, and Sheila Bromley.
April 29, 1938 – The Morning Herald
Quite a gathering of celebrities at (the House of Murphy) the other night…. Fields and Mack Sennett at one table and, right next to them, Carole Lombard, Clark Gable and the Buster colliers. Carol, who used to be a Sennett girl, staged a reunion with her old boss.

hi sorry to bother you! I'm new to reading your stuff and I like that you do a lot of sapphic short stories, so i was hoping to read more, but i wondered first: will all/most be about teenagers? i am 25+ and so i'd like to find more stuff about folks in their late 20s and older if i can but wasn't sure if you wrote about that. its ok if you don't ofc!! i just thought you would know your writing best. thanks for your time either way! :)
I write about a variety of ages! But here is a list of stories with characters in their 20s and above:
The Lavender Fields: a woman gets divorced and moves back in with her sister only to discover a strange phantom appearing in the lavender fields next to their house.
And Death Shall Have no Dominoes: A 26-year old pizza-delivery girl does weekly runs to a mysterious apartment with a shut-in woman who refuses to be seen and has a thing for cross-word puzzles and anchovies.
The Waitress and the Werewolf: A waitress and a werewolf share early morning conversations as the wolf comes in starving from her past transformation and the waitress tries to figure out what this muddy, shoe-less stranger is doing there every month.
It is Too Bad I am but a Cat, and You Are the Sun: okay, this is about a cat, but the love interest is in her early thirties. A story about a cursed witch’s familiar who falls in love with the gardener across the road from them. (older work)
The Tadpole Witch: The Sunspot is a remote sanctuary where the world hasn’t ended, Enid is a courier that ventures outside its walls for her job. After a particularly bad day she jumps off the designated path and goes looking for a special tadpole.
Instead, she finds an outsider knocking on her door. (sci-fi soft-apocalyptic, older work)
The Clockwork Princess: a princess is trapped in an hourglass by a dragon while a thief regularly breaks in to steal from the creatures hoard. The princess tries to bribe the thief to break her out.
The She-Wolf of Sanders: Every year one maiden must be chosen to climb the rocky mountain and be sacrificed to the wolf-headed woman of Sanders as her bride. Anna makes the journey, but what she finds is not what she expected.
-----
God, I write a lot of fantasy, but there you are! I’m also working on a story about a soccer mom right now (in her early forties) who runs over a vampire in a mall parking lot

of my courier ocs carrie has the worst memory problems after (hence the "using an entirely new name bc she forgot hers" thing). benny missed one shot on keagan and on enid the bullets mostly missed her brain; keagan has worse short term memory after but its not lifechanging, enid recovers really well. carrie starts with the worst baseline because she was an addict for a long time and her body is already messed up from it.
im thinking carrie might have had a grandparent with dementia at one point, and her own memory problems give her a lot of anxiety, but she cant exactly remember why.

i went to an arcade today and played quite a few shooter games. these games reminded me of 3 facts: 1. i don’t know how to hold a fucking gun 2. i hate shotguns 3. i love automatics/assault rifles. which has me deciding that that is what i shall focus on if i do a tale of two wastelands run. i think i do have one in new vegas on keagan but i don’t use it a ton and could not tell you what it’s called
also i fear i may never end up getting around to carrie or enid. i will likely keep the tags and posts up just because i like to ponder but alas. raphael is also an unsurety rn

oc picrew time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order: keagan rhodes, carrie, enid ortíz, and edith schultz
various addendums under the cut so it doesn’t clutter!
i wish i could’ve done charlie but this picrew doesn’t have his hairstyle… for some reason they never do. my boys hair is unpopular
not shown on keagan: mismatched eyes, only half an ear, the scarf he always wears so he doesn’t get a sunburn, and he’s usually sadder looking than this
carrie’s hat is the roving trader hat :)
edith wears her hair in a half up ponytail not a bun. also pretend the jacket is the minuteman general uniform. shhh
i also made another for enid, because the hair is a bit more accurate but looked funky with the hat on:

#1 with any of your characters, or all of them.
Your choice.
oooh.. hmmm...
i've answered for charlie n keagan before, so why dont i put a twist on it and go with enid and carrie this time!
1. What’s the lie your character says most often?
enid's not much of a liar, i'd say. not that she has any real moral issue with it, not more than the average person at least, she just doesnt bother. that being said, her most common lie is likely something regarding the legion - that she doesn't work for them, she never has, she hates them, et cetera et cetera. in reality she's much more neutral to them than she arguably should be
carrie lies every time someone offers to travel with her and she says she's fine alone. i mean, she can handle herself, sure, but thats not why she says no. she just wants to be alone. and she lies when someone asks if she wants a hit of med-x and she says 'no'

carrie’s parents and enid’s siblings also still don’t have names. idek how many siblings enid has. at least one brother
keagan’s dad and brother r declan and riley, enid’s parents are janine and manuel ortíz (i might change her dads name. originally it was miguel, but then i remembered that’s the name on raul’s jumpsuit so i just changed it to smth similar, but i don’t love it). also thinking her grandma’s name’ll be guadalupe?
keagan’s dad and brother have names but his step mom still doesn’t have a name.. taking suggestions

something interesting about an older courier… idk, i think to me it makes it feel less like the Defining Moment of a New Young Hero and more like, oh yea that was just their job. you tried to murder someone just doing their job.

1 & 3!
1. Tell us about your WIPs!
I have waaaay too many, here’s the main ones:
Intercepted: a sci-fi racing/pirates story
summary: Beni F. is a ‘Streak Racer’ charged with securing First Contact with new planets for the Human Union. The HU has never won First Contact with other sentient life before, but Beni sets out to change that- too bad a gaggle of pirates has other plans
The Bicycle: historical romance
a bed-ridden young woman with a bad case of tuberculosis and sees a factory worker biking to work each day, one day she finally sneaks out and asks her to teach her how to ride a bike
set in 1901 industrializing America
The Tadpole Witch: sci-fi/soft apocalypse
The Sunspot is a remote sanctuary where the world hasn’t ended, Enid is a young courier that is told that if you catch and grow a tadpole you will be granted a wish. Instead, she meets someone in the swamp knocking on the door of asylum
Fallen/Two Demons, Several Angels, and a Human: fantasy
Leslie is a partially fallen angel that has become mortal for a human, Clarke is a crossroads angel sent to bring her back into the fold. Sven is a mortal demon that’s assigned to do just the opposite
a story of 4 interlocking paths with several key choices, long contemplations, and one crappy apartment
(has four different perspectives and two different storylines, so this one might be a doozy)
those are just the ones I have beginnings and summary’s for 😅, honestly if one of these sounds more interesting then the others then leave a reply, lord knows I don’t know which one to focus on yet
3. What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing?
Favorite part: story beginnings!! I have a lot of story ideas (see above) and love setting up storylines and characters, beginnings of stories are so juicy and fun to me
Least favorite: editing!! Tho story middles are also not my favorite, all the set-up and bridging events sometimes feels tedious, beginnings/endings are where it’s at for me
