Whenever we express our shock that 1/6 occurred, we’re exposing our ignorance to the many people who’ve tried to warn us since 2016 or before. Let’s get better at listening to the people and groups who saw the attempted white supremacist coup coming and who we didn’t listen to. It’s on white folks to listen, amplify, and assist. We also have to lead amongst ourselves, and be vocal and unafraid when confronting white supremacy in our circles. Silence only makes racists assume you’re on their side. Take a tip from Dan Savage when advising LGBTQ+ folks how to deal with homophobic family - the only leverage you have is your presence. If the people around you who espouse horrible things realize they actually have something to lose if they continue on their course, that is more likely to force them to examine their actions than any facts will. I also call upon @myfavoritemurder’s motto “Fuck Politeness” as inspiration (meaning in this case, don’t worry about being nice when you feel unsafe - don’t endanger yourself by being polite when your gut is telling you something is wrong). Politeness keeps us from confronting or even discussing the most important things keeping our society from advancing. Being schooled to not discuss politics or social justice/civil rights allows ignorance to fester and, again, bigots to assume you agree. Buhari, ECOWAS condemn failed coup attempt in Ethiopia

In a statement he personally signed in his capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Muhammadu Buhari has strongly condemned the coup attempt in the Amhara Region and the tragic events in the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, on Saturday 22 June, 2019. Buhari said in the statement, “We express our deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims of the coup attempt and to the people and Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. “We reaffirm the imperative for the adherence to relevant African Union Instruments, principally the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the Lomé Declaration on the Unconstitutional Change of Government. “We are committed to the ideals of the African Union on Democracy, Elections and Good Governance adopted at the Eighth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2007. “We urge all concerned to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any action that could undermine the peace, unity and stability of Ethiopia. “At this trying period, we also convey our full solidarity to the people and Government of Ethiopia. “We finally reiterate our respect for the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.” he stated.
