Week 3 Data Management Assignment
Specific rubric items, and their point values, are as follows:
Was the program output interpretable (i.e. organized and labeled)? (1 point)
Does the program output display three data managed variables as frequency tables? (1 point)
Did the summary describe the frequency distributions in terms of the values the variables take, how often they take them, the presence of missing data, etc.? (2 points)
Summary:
My research question is looking at breast cancer rates and high alcohol consumption across coutries, using the Gapminder data. I am interested in country, alcconsumption and the breastcancerper100TH variables.
I created a new variable, countrycheck, to indicate if there was missing values for the country for either of the values I am interested.
Since the variables I am interested in, alcconsumption and breastcancerper100TH, have too many values, I created new "bin" variables to categorize the values.
Here is the data dictionary for my new variables.
The countrycheck variable bins the countries as follows:
0 = Country has missing variabiables for alcconsumption or breastcancerper100TH .
1 = Country has missing alcconsumption variable only.
2 = Country has missing breastcancerper100TH variable only.
3 = Country has both alcconsumption or breastcancerper100TH variables
This will be useful in future programs to include only countries that have both variables. The frequency table below indicates that data for both variables is available for about 79 % of countries. Data is missing for both variables for about 10%. Data is missing for alcconsumption for only 2.3% and for the only breastcancerper100TH variable about 9%.
The alcconsumpcategory variable bins the alcconsumption into quartiles, with bottom = 1 for lowest,2 for middle quartiles, and 3 for highest quartile.
The cancerratecategory variable bins the breastcancerper100TH into quartiles, with bottom = 1 for lowest,2 for middle quartiles, and 3 for highest quartile.
Here is my program:
LIBNAME mydata "/courses/d1406ae5ba27fe300 " access=readonly; %let HY=^{unicode 00AD}; /* use for line feed in labels */ /* first create a dataset of all data */ data gapminder; set mydata.gapminder; keep country breastcancerper100TH alcconsumption;
/* second create a dataset that narrows in on research question by subsetting and labeling */
proc print data = gapminder; run;
data research_question; set mydata.gapminder;
/* create a variable"countrycheck" for identifying if a country has missing data for either the alcconsumption or breastcancerper100TH variable or both. */ if alcconsumption = . and breastcancerper100TH = . then countrycheck = 0; else if alcconsumption = . and breastcancerper100TH <> . then countrycheck = 1; else if alcconsumption <> . and breastcancerper100TH = . then countrycheck = 2; else countrycheck = 3;
/* create a variable "alcconsumpcategory" to bin the alcconsumption variable into low, medium and high */
if alcconsumption le 2.56 then alcconsumpcategory = 1; /* lower percentile */ else if alcconsumption ge 9.99 then alcconsumpcategory = 3; /* high percentile */ else alcconsumpcategory = 2; /* middle percentiles *;
/* create a variable "cancerratecategory" to bin the breast cancer variable */
if breastcancerper100TH le 20.6 then cancerratecategory = 1; /* lower percentile */ else if breastcancerper100TH ge 50.3 then cancerratecategory = 3; /* high percentile */ else cancerratecategory = 2; /* middle percentiles */
LABEL countrycheck="Category for country to indicate presence of variables" alcconsumpcategory="Category for breast cancer variable for new cases per 100K Females" cancerratecategory = "Category for alcohol Consumption (litres)";
proc sort; by country;
/* use proc freq as a way to validate quartiles and variables */ proc freq; tables countrycheck alcconsumpcategory cancerratecategory; run;
Here are the frequency table for all three new variables.
