They had to eat in the kitchen, sing, and go to a black hotel across town. So Frank said ‘we’re not gonna have more of that.’ So, we came in, we had 18 goombahs put with each one of us. And he stopped the racism in one year, for Basie, Sammy, myself and Basie’s band. He stopped it, man. Cold!”
