Hey so what are your middleschool ichiya headcanons (twirls hair)
Oh boy I love dumping about Ichiya hcs cause I got quite a lot. cracks knuckles. You have unleashed a storm. (For reference, I hc Beika going by he/she so that's what ill be using ^^. It's impossible not to mention her.)
Ichiya would always be kind of the showoff, outgoing cool kid in school, being rather popular. He met a lot of kids and was friendly with quite a bit of them, but they were mostly just a crowd he surrounded himself with. Beika was one of the closer friends Ichiya had, one he actually went out of his way to spend more time with and get to know. For his friendship with Beika, I think they bonded a lot over the general shared idea of a future popular band and making music. Ichiya approached Beika first and they hit it off pretty fast as buddies. They'd often have small hangouts after school, having some jam sessions and talking more about their dreams.
They never established a band together, as Beika was already in C-Side, so they just did things on the side together. Beika was a big reason as to why Ichiya wanted a band too. He actually looked up to Beika a bit, as she was also self-taught and already was having a band in development. Ichiya would always be trying to impress Beika with his guitar playing, trying to overcompensate for not actually knowing shit about the music process. Beika was always pretty passionate about music and the creative process behind it. Beika could say a bunch of things and talk about how things are developing with C-Side and Ichiya just wouldn't understand… But he'd try his best to keep up with the conversation LMAO. From time to time, Ichiya would hang out and watch C-Side practice after school.
Now or Never was initially written as Beika's idea when she presented it for a one-on-one jam session one day as a work-in-progress. He wanted Ichiya's thoughts before he would show it to the rest of C-Side. It became more of a joined effort with Ichiya's ideas being added to finish the song, mostly developing the guitar chords. The first Now or Never demo was made by both of them and was later redone and refined by C-Side.
The big part in how they split was due to their differing priorities when it came to music. Things slowly started to fall apart between Ichiya and Beika the more it became apparent how different they were. The turning point was Ichiya expressing his want to move to Inkopolis, because that's where all the big stars were rising from. One of my headcanons really is that he begged his parents to let him move out to Inkopolis on his own when he was 15. They allowed him to, because he told them with the pretense that it was for the purpose of school, and just paid for his expenses. (Small reality check on Ichiya's part. He didn't realize how lonely and rough it kind of was, whoops!)
I think he would have suggested Beika to move to Inkopolis as well, in some way to be helpful, but Beika flatly refused. Beika didn't want to just leave behind his family, friends and the home he grew up in. The Splatlands was a big part of the identity of C-Side and Beika, feeling like leaving it would abandon her morals. She was pretty insulted that Ichiya thought she would even remotely agree to that idea. They had a fight over it, with both of them arguing things in the heat of the moment and pissing each other off. Before they knew it, Ichiya ended up moving away for high school and their argument never really resolved.
On another note, I personally love the idea of transmasc Ichiya. I think he had a lot of dysphoria in middle school. He just couldn't figure out why it bugged him until after he thought harder on what he wanted to be known as. (He's horrible at self-reflection and self-discovery). Ichiya hadn't decided to cut his hair or change his pronouns until the fresh start in Inkopolis.
Anyway i cant wait for stuff to be rewritten once bankara walker comes out. I gotta know how shattered my hcs are.

Name: Ichiya
Debut: HOPEFULLY NEVER
Hi everyone! It’s Mod Cat Flopter here :3 Bet you didn’t think you’d see me so soon after Now or Never!!
This BASTARD and THIEF is a former member of the band Squid Squad, now a member of the band Front Roe. His music debuted in Splatoon 1!
Ichiya is a vocalist and guitarist who grew up in Splatsville, then moved to Inkopolis, where he founded Squid Squad with Nami, Quinn, and Murasaki. His most prolific work, Now or Never, is a track stolen from his childhood friend, Beika. He doesn’t know ANY music theory and just vibes. Usually, this would be respectable, but when this clownfish does it it makes him anemone! He’s shellfish and he’s said to have the temperment of a prodigy, as proven by the fact that he STOLE NOW OR NEVER!!!!
But. To be… Sigh. Nice. He IS charming and people are drawn to him. He’s a rockstar! He’s made plenty of OTHER music, all of which is pretty good :3
And I do mean that he makes the music! He was Squid Squad’s primary lyricist and composer, as well as vocalist and guitarist, and there’s not any indication that Front Roe is any different. He’s a Big Deal!
But I’m also not the only one with beef! Me and my best friend Beika are also joined by his former bandmate Quinn, the bassist, who he got into a HUGE fight with. Quinn preferred a tense atmosphere, and thought that Squid Squad, as well as Ichiya himself, were too laid back. So they shot each other! With ink guns. Splatoon.
That does make me wonder, though. Did Squid Squad turf? They WERE a quartet, but Murasaki is an urchin. Did they listen to their own music while turfing? The world is so wide and beautiful, so I do not think mysteries like this must be solved…
Then again, Quinn does not seem overtly opposed to a reunion with his old bandmates. When asked if a reunion was in the cards, he simply said that it was a good question and left. That’s not a no :3
Another person who has a rivalry with Ichiya is Mizo of Wet Floor! This is less hate and more of an overbearing legacy. Mizo wants to do his own thing, and it’s REALLY hard to escape Squid Squad’s legacy as THE Turf War band. I think that Wet Floor did make a name for themselves, and their own identity, but given they also covered Now or Never! Mizo had their work cut out for them.
And last but also most, Beika himself! The original creator of Now or Never! and Ichiya’s childhood friend. He started a BIG Twitter storm about how Ichiya stole Now or Never! from him, and there’s some good evidence for it!
First of all, after Quinn left, the remaining members of Squid Squad moved to the Splatlands, forming Front Roe with new member 004CLM, who is NOT a clam. Probably. Either way, they’re reluctant to play their Squid Squad hits, including Now or Never!. Probably because Ichiya STOLE it!! They also keep their faces hidden and never promote or perform their music in Splatsville itself!
Okay :3 now for some trivia.
Ichiya loves walking as a hobby!
Squid Squad didn’t seem to have a label, but Front Roe is working with the independent label AGARI
I could not think of enough fish puns this time, sorry!
Okay!! Sorry for late!! Thank you for reading!! This bastard should go jail!! Byebye!

I am foaming at the mouth to share my headcanons with more people. (Most of these are related to the booklet)
Diss-Pair and Front Roe answer questions about a SqSq reunion in the vaguest way possible on purpose. They are all in touch and they’ve communicated this with one another. It is coordinated because even they don’t know if they’re ever going to do a reunion thing.
Ichiya grew up in the Splatlands and was very close friends with Beika throughout elementary and middle school. They became really fast friends because they shared a love of music. They formed a band together but nobody liked anything they made.
Until Now or Never. They showed it to kids and teachers at their school and everyone thought it was really cool. They recorded it together but before they could release it they got into a fight over and Beika wanting to stay in the Splatlands despite the popularity that Inkopolis might’ve given and Ichiya wanting to leave the Splatlands and go to Inkopolis for popularities sake. In the end, Ichiya took the sheet music Now or Never with him out of spite (he couldn’t read it) and went off to Inkopolis (as many teens did) to make his own band.
You see Squid Squads whole thing is that they introduced “punk and rock” to the squid world but actually Ichiya was just making music that was adjacent to the stuff common in Splatsville and nobody noticed.
Also this is crackpot than usual but I think that the Squid Skull we see on his shirt is a logo that is from the Splatlands as we see similar squid skull graffiti on a stage or two and as a sticker
I will continue using she pronouns for Beika because I’m in denial
Beika regularly gets drunk and makes tweets starting shit with various people and things. When Kikura tells her to stop she’ll usually say something about a PR team
Kikura is basically their PR team.
They do not have a good PR team.
Beika does not know the difference between a cello, a violin, a viola, or a fiddle. In her mind they are all just “violins”
004 is Murasakis collage roommate who normally does freelance work. He’s pretty chill but has never said anything. It’s kinda like a Captain situation where Murasaki “translates” for ‘em.
They needed to find a bassist because Ichiya wrote Sea Me Now as if there was a bassist in the band when it was only the members of Sqsq at that point.i
God I love the booklet
Noji sometimes just says really random and intelligent shit before getting distracted by something and moving on to a new topic of discussion
Also people nickname him “Clash” because he is a menace with the clash blasters
God I’m sorry for spamming your inbox with stupid band ramblings
NO ITS OK 10/10 hcs as always fia!!!! I really enjoy your take on beika and ichiya's whole beef i think ill steal it for myself ok this is also my personal intrepretation now JAKJJS
also noiji being unknowingly smart as hell is such a fun trope i think its 100% true
