What the hell was he doing in what looked like some sort of psych ward? Before he could get his bearings, he heard moaning coming from behind him and got to his feet, swiveling around, ready to fight whoever was in the room with him. ‘Whoever’ turned out to be two someones. What he needs is a bit of peace and quiet, and maybe a nice, straightforward hunt. Or dealing with Cas, whose powers are still failing and who is acting more human in increasingly disconcerting ways.

Highway 9 | @ellis-park
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 38909 Main Tags/Warnings: Angst with a happy ending, mutual pining, suicide attempt Summary: Dean Winchester is a private investigator working what should be an open-and-shut vandalism case on an isolated stretch of rural highway. Except it’s not an open-and-shut case, because whatever is happening on Highway 9 isn’t vandalism — it’s something far more sinister and unnatural. And if Dean is going to get to the bottom of this case, he’s going to have to rely on the one person he’s learned he can’t rely on for anything — his ex-best friend, Cas Novak.
Someone Who’s Feeling for Me | @ellis-park
Rating: Mature Word Count: 45876 Main Tags/Warnings: Mutual pining, case fic, canon universe Summary: Dean sees her for the first time in nearly six years in some no-name town in Idaho, and it's panic at first sight. Lisa Braeden, the one woman Dean ever actually had a shot at a real life with, back from where he buried her in his mind. And her hand is on Cas's arm like it's no big deal, like it belongs there. Cas, Dean's dorky, sweet, badass, angelic best friend, and he's just standing there next to Lisa and not moving her hand away. Dean feels the jealousy rising, and it's not directed where he expected it to be. Because it takes this exact moment for Dean to realize he's in love with his best friend. He's in love with his best friend, and Lisa is looking at Cas like he's the best thing since automatic rifles, and Dean is utterly fucked.
Silver and Cold | @pomegranatedaffodil
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 64851 Main Tags/Warnings: Case Fic, Hunter Castiel, Small Town Setting, Religious Themes, Canon-Typical Violence, Minor Injuries, Minor Character Death,Tragic Backstory, Nightmares, Angst with a Happy Ending, Switching Summary: The death of a young man in an apparent animal attack brings hunter Cas Novak to the small town of Sydnam, Maine. It doesn’t take long for him to realize he’s tracking a werewolf, but discovering the killer’s identity is no easy task. All signs point towards Dean Winchester, a lonely recluse who lives in the middle of the woods and whose antagonistic behaviour does little to lessen Cas’ suspicions. As the investigation drags on, their mutual distrust gives way to a wary alliance. Cas’ instincts warn him that Dean is hiding something, but as he uncovers the man beneath the mystery, his professional interest becomes far more personal. Praying his faith in Dean isn’t misplaced, Cas races to catch the killer before the next full moon rises and another life is abruptly cut short.

Hi traincat! Hope you're doing well. I figured since you have an extensive knowledge on all things Spider-Man, you would know your way around his rogues! I wanted to ask if you have a favorite or one that you find most compelling and why. Thanks a million!
I think my answers for which rogues are my favorites and which I find most compelling and which are widely viewed as the best and why are all pretty wildly different. I do think the popular assessment that Spider-Man has one of the best rogues galleries in Marvel canon is true. Like, I think the absolute best Spider-Main villain story -- the one that gives you the best sense of the villain as a character and also the one that works best at uniting villain and is Kraven’s Last Hunt, which is just incredible on every level. (Content warning for suicide.)
(Web of Spider-Man #32) Also, like, in terms of design, Kraven is great. Love a big Russian game hunter perpetually bare chested and wearing leopard print cropped leggings. That’s not something you get sick of. Only Kraven Sr. for me, though -- I’m less fond of his son, although I think the whole family affairs in Grim Hunt and Scarlet Spider v2 are pretty fun.
On the other hand, though, I think that some of the biggest villains in Spider-Man’s gallery, namely Norman Osborn and Doc Ock, are overused, although I know why they’re overused and it’s because they’re really good villains. (But also you can only make people pay for the same story so many times with only minor variations before it starts to get old.) I think Norman and Peter are pretty perfect opposites, whereas Otto and Peter are mirror images -- although I think generally Norman stories pull off that opposite nature better than Otto stories reveal him as a mirrored image of Peter.
I think it’s interesting that Otto is kind of the first “big” villain Peter encounters -- he makes his debut in ASM #3, so there are villains that come before him, but they’re like, the Vulture and the Chameleon. And there are great Vulture stories -- love that flying octogenarian -- but like, I would not put the Vulture in the absolute top tier Spider-Man villains. And the Chameleon is a freak.
Same, girl. (Web of Spider-Man #65)
More villain talk beneath the cut.
By comparison, Otto is the first villain to actually serve Peter a real defeat, the first one to humble him. So I think it’s interesting that they come from very similar backgrounds -- both geniuses, both lonely as children, both people who were in danger of becoming very solitary, isolated adults, which Otto did and which Peter did not. They had a mother figure who verged on at times or was actually smothering in her affections, and a salt of the earth type father figure. And Otto gains his powers after suffering an accident with radiation much the same way Peter does. It’s one of the things that disappoints me about Superior Spider-Man, because I don’t think it plays into the idea of Otto and Peter as mirrored images of each other nearly as much as it could have. Even Otto’s Parker Industries originally showed up in a “bad” version of Peter’s life, where he never got bit by the spider and instead becomes a CEO:
(Sensational Spider-Man #41) “You prove yourself to everyone -- except yourself.” Which is what Otto is continually trying to do, and which is what he always falls short of. So it’s interesting that there’s kind of all this set up here and that the actual comics sort of continually fall short of it.
Green Goblin stories live up to their rep a little better, in my opinion, and they’re better at playing into those parallels. Norman and Peter are both self-made men, but Norman is rich and Peter is not. Peter accepts responsibility and fault; Norman does not. Norman’s life is devoid of women, while Peter’s is full of it. If Norman and Peter are both studies in masculinity, then Norman’s is toxic and Peter’s is not. Peter is capable of growth; Norman is entrenched in this role he’s made for himself -- he is not capable of sustained growth beyond the role he’s made for himself. There’s a reason I think Norman gets used so much and it’s because it’s a heady dynamic to kind of play into -- especially when you go with the relatively more recent angle of things where Norman kind of views Peter as the perfect heir, worthy where Harry is not. Honestly, it’s a good time whenever you’re involving Harry in the mix at all, as someone caught between these two very powerful figures and how the tug-of-war there for ownership of him is just completely soul destroying.
(Spectacular Spider-Man #180)
But I do think Norman is overused, and it’s gotten a point where in Amazing Spider-Man #800 it was like -- oh, what, he’s going to kill Flash? He’s going to kill someone else Peter loves? He’s killed like half the main-main cast at this point. He’s behind the murder of Peter and Mary Jane’s baby, he’s responsible for Ben Reilly’s death, he killed Gwen Stacy, Harry’s death goes directly back to him, he’s kidnapped May and Mary Jane and Flash and blah blah blah it’s JUST TOO MUCH. It can’t always be this one guy! You can’t just bring him back every 50 issues like “this time Norman Osborn’s gone too far” when he went too far in the ‘70s. Everything since then has just been trying to recapture the moment he threw Gwen Stacy off the bridge. It’s exhausting. I’m begging Spider-Man, as it starts hyping up yet another Norman story for ASM #850, to do something new.
In comparison to Norman, I think Harry’s run as the Green Goblin is fairly flawlessly executed as far as villain stories go, especially in its final hour. Spectacular Spider-Man #200 is really one of my favorite single issues of all time. Harry has the pathos that Norman really never does -- you can feel for Harry in a way that you can’t feel for Norman. And it’s because Harry loves Peter -- really, truly loves him -- that his acts of villainy take on that special edge of cruelty. It doesn’t just hurt Peter that these things are being done; it hurts Peter that these are being done and that it’s Harry doing them and that, in a lot of ways, they both blame Peter for why Harry is doing them, even if at the end of the day it’s in no way Peter’s fault. And then there’s the utterly perfect moment as Harry dies in Spectacular Spider-Man #200, that his act of triumph is that he can’t bring himself to kill Peter, because he loves him too much. It’s perfect. I live in fear they’re going to make Harry a villain again and try to replicate it only to fall painfully short.
I think the Jackal is actually underutilized because he is in my honest opinion the scariest Spider-Man villain, or at the very least the creepiest. Where Norman can only dream of remaking Spider-Man in his own image, the Jackal actually does that with Ben Reilly -- and, to a lesser extent, with Kaine, his first damaged clone. He’s a good lurker, too, less show-y than either Otto or Norman. He lurked in the background for a while. And in a series where I think you can pick a lot of the villains apart as men who take advantage of their power, having the Jackal be a college professor whose villainous career stems from his obsession with one of his students fits right in. And he’s just creepy. He’s upsetting! The things he does to the clones -- both the Peter and Gwen clones, although I think the comics are not so great at letting the Gwen clones shine as individual characters, which is something I wish someone would actually do something about -- are very upsetting, especially since you can extrapolate from a lot of Kaine’s stories and the things we know bother him and how he’s consistently paralleled against Janine Godbe, that both Kaine and the Gwen clones were sexually abused by the Jackal. (Spider-Man’s not typically shy about examining darker subjects, and while we can only extrapolate from canon with Kaine, it’s extremely there on the surface with the Gwen clones. I mean, he married one.) And honestly, the villain who’s whole schtick is cloning makes more sense as someone who can repeatedly come back from anything than Norman’s deal of Corrupt Businessman Surprisingly Hard To Kill. I’ve said before that Peter appears to have a bit of a loophole in his personal moral code when it comes to violence that either has no consequences or lessened consequences, like when he cuts loose against Wolverine, someone who has a healing factor, or when he buried the Juggernaut, supposedly indestructible, in concrete. The Jackal as someone who could and has clone himself repeatedly opens up similar doorways -- what’s to stop Peter from cutting loose if the Jackal isn’t confined to this one body? There’s a lot to play with there and a lot more interesting spaces to go than, say, having to invent increasingly poor excuses for why Peter hasn’t taken more permanent action with Norman if Norman is always going to return to do harm to someone beloved to Peter.
Finally, I’m in a weird spot with personal favorite villains because honestly my instinct is to say the Lizard. And that’s an issue because of one fairly recent storyline and everything that’s spun out from it: Shed (Amazing Spider-Man #630-633), the storyline where Curt Connors loses all control over the Lizard, kills, and partially devours his son Billy. Like, I LIKE grim dark Spider-Man comics, and Shed is honestly too much for me -- not because of the Lizard’s actions, but because in the story Peter fails to save Billy. And I say not because of the Lizard’s actions because I think, as fun as a giant lizard man in purple pants and a lab coat can be, I think Curt Connors makes for one hell of a supervillain metaphor for domestic violence.
(ASM #365)
(Spectacular Spider-Man v2 #13) And it’s very compelling. There’s a lot of things to explore down that alley. But once you actually go as far as having the Lizard kill his son, you can’t take that back. And the problem is, that’s what Spider-Man comics have tried to do post-Shed. It feels weird and deeply out of character to have writers assume that Peter could forgive the murder of any child, let alone a child he knew, and have him continue his relationship with Curt Connors. It’s a weird message to go “yeah, he ate his kid, but he wasn’t in control, and he made up for it via cloning, so we’re all good now.” Like imagine trying to spin that in any horror movie. It doesn’t work -- that your villain kills his kid and then clones him and pretends everything is okay now would be the plot of the horror movie. Spider-Man is a series fundamentally built on the fact that actions have consequences, and sometimes those consequences are utterly unfixable. Peter can’t go back and intercept the burglar to prevent Uncle Ben’s death. He can’t clone Uncle Ben and wipe that incident out of history. So to have a story like Shed in continuity as something that doesn’t alter Peter’s perception of Curt Connors forever doesn’t work.
Anyway that’s why my favorite villain is the Shocker. Love that quilted bastard.

Keep your Lamps trimmed and Burning
Today, I ask all of you to burn a candle. Set the wick on fire and say prayers or whatever you do to connect with God or the universe. Yesterday, the Wright family lost their son. A baby boy lost his father. Siblings lost their brother. Friends lost a friend.
I need you all to find the will and energy to understand the situations at hand. A young man, lost his life at a traffic stop. Daunte Wright was pulled over for having an air freshener dangling from his review mirror. Everyone will argue that he shouldn’t have resisted. Well, let me ask you this: are you going to step out of the car when police officers tell you “you’re under arrest and we’ll tell you when you get out?” How is that professional?
Are you actually going to step out of the car when law enforcement doesn’t give you ANY reason or explanation as to why you are being arrested?! I’m pretty sure you all will say no. I’m pretty sure you all will ask for a reason until it’s “acceptable” but even then. Do you know how many people are placed in jail for crime they didn’t commit? But that’s another point for another day.
A study made by NYC and the Stanford Open Policing Project that black drivers were about 20% were more likely to be stopped than white drivers “relative to their share of the residential population.” It was also discovered that once black drivers were stopped, they were also searched 1.5 to 2 times as often as white drivers.
Numbers never lie. Unless you change them. So you tell me in light of the events of yesterday, how isn’t this a systemic problem?
I come to the conclusion that media will always lie to make the victims look like criminals. I watched a video of Daunte Wright’s mother explaining her experience of when he was pulled over. It was heart breaking to hear his parents talk about the LAST time they saw their son. Mind you, all of this happening during the trial of George Floyd. Do you see the red wound opening up again for the black community?
How can we can sit here and watch these wounds bleed, when we have the power and resources to make change possible. Yes, change and progress take time. But THIS is history. Black HISTORY has always been sidelined so that white history can prevail and be the “prosperous people of the future”.
They didn’t do shit but rape and pillage land. All Europeans SHOULD acknowledge and repair the damage done on history. Do you think anything has changed over the last few generations? No. It hasn’t changed because people, especially white racist people don’t want to take responsibility. They don’t want to acknowledge the past because they’re scared of losing power and not being in control. Racist white folk want to keep on being the powerhouses. And that’s just not it.
It’s all an illusion. White lies. To pretend that history is behind us. Yeah, tell that to Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Abrery, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Walter Scott, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Tamar Rice, Atatiana Jefferson, Rekia Boyd and the countless others. How many lives could still be breathing today if the system wasn’t against them.
Do you know or understand the deep mistrust with law enforcement and the black community. It wasn’t long ago, during the Jim Crow Laws, towns claimed themselves to be “sundown towns”. This meant that towns could use any means necessary to intimidate and harass black people who stayed in their town after sunset. Most of the time it ended in the death of black civilians. Half these harassments and intimidation tactics were made by white police officers. Killing for sport.
Black lives aren’t animals to be hunted. Yet, that is what history did. There are articles and archives with this documentation. You can look it up or learn about it in Lovecraft Country. So don’t sit here and tell me that racism doesn’t exist.
You have all the tools available for you. Books, documents, archives, movies, music, shows and people’s experiences to tell you about black life in America. So don’t say you didn’t know, because you do, but you choose to see what information is good enough for you.
No, this shit is rough. It’s beyond upsetting. It’s infuriating. It even makes you feel powerless at times. BUT ITS FUCKING IMPORTANT because black lives are at stake. Their lives matter! You use them and abuse them and them kill them without question or thought. White America is nothing but white lies and bloodshed.
America Strived to be the “land of the free” and advertised this to the WHOLE world. This land was never yours. And yet, you expect the rest of the world to bow and kiss your stinky gross white ass feet. No. Don’t get mad because you so called claim to be the all mighty. This is your consequence. People will make it clear how wrong you are, White America.
People aren’t stealing your jobs. You’re lazy and entitled and can’t do absolutely NOTHING for yourself without help. You complain about every foreigner and culture and yet YOU TAKE ASPECTS of all these cultures and say you did it.
Yeah, and what about the Native Americans? What about every population you forced out with diseases and religious conversion? Huh? You still have outcasted indigenous folk. You’ve done absolutely nothing but take from them and black people.
LIARS and MURDERS that’s what history is and it’s people. You can get away with murder and rape. You can storm through the capital without a scratch or bullet. YET all you do is cry like a child when you don’t get your way.
Don’t expect compassion for your sad attempts of understanding. YOU have the resources. DO THE WORK. If it actually fucking matters to you, THEN DO IT. Stop asking your friends in the black community about what to do or how they feel. Pay attention to yourself and make this place better.
As for the Wright Family: I am so very sorry you didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to your son. I am so sorry you had hear your son last words through the phone. I am so sorry that no matter how hard you try to live a happy life, the system continues to be against you.
Your son deserves to be alive. He deserves to be with his son. He deserves joy and happiness and it was taken from him far too quickly. I know that words are never enough to take away your pain. But my heart is with you. My prayers are with you. I will send you all my forces and strength for this difficult time. I will continue to fight for every black life. I will continue to stand against hate. I will make sure people are educated and learn about the racism against black life.
To every black souls lost due racism and violence, may you find ever lasting peace above. 🕊

tw: parental death, manipulation, heavy on the abuse/dv, murder, lots of BAD THINGS!!! IC PORTION; BASICS —
CHARACTER NAME/ALIAS: Richard James “RJ” Boyle / Winter Solider (II)
FACECLAIM: Noah Centineo
AFFILIATIONS: HYDRA, The Task Force
AGE (physical age as well, if different): 21. He was injected with the super soldier serum shortly after his 21st birthday, and so RJ will remain physically 21 until his death.
SPECIES (human, metahuman, alien, etc): Complicated. RJ started out entirely human, though he has been permanently altered by the serum, making him a meta human.
IS YOUR CHARACTER’S IDENTITY SECRET OR PUBLIC? Secret, for the time being.
IF SECRET, OR YOUR CHARACTER IS A CIVILIAN, DO THEY HAVE A CIVILIAN OCCUPATION?: He’s fully controlled by the ISA
DOES YOUR CHARACTER LIVE IN THE MOUSEHOLE? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEIR DUTIES? No
DESCRIBE SIX TRAITS (3 positive, 3 negative) YOUR CHARACTER HAS AND HOW THESE AFFECT THEM:
+ CHARISMATIC: RJ hasn’t lost his charisma, even with all of the brainwashing, conditioning and abuse. Prior to HYDRA, RJ was a goofy kid and some of that still remains. He’s an assassin that will talk your ear off while actively trying to kill you, boyish smile and all. RJ is, overall, horribly under socialized and takes every and any opportunity he can get to chat and be social.
+ QUICK-THINKING: RJ is always one step ahead, always ready, always waiting. He’s quick on his feet and isn’t easily frustrated or swayed when shit inevitably hits the fan and things veer off plan. He usually has back-up plans to his back-up plans, but he’s excellent at thinking on the fly as well. He’s resourceful and has been trained to use whatever is available to him, and has a good eye for these types of things.
+ PATIENT: RJ will lay in wait for however long is needed of him. He spent years in a HYDRA facility staring at a wall to pass the time, and so it is safe to say that he could literally wait to watch paint dry. This certainly aids him when it comes to missions and field work. RJ’s able to put in the leg work, do the recon required for his missions without jumping in too soon. He’s trained to wait for the perfect, most opportune moment, and he’s quite good at it.
- OBSESSIVE: RJ has tunnel vision when it comes to...most everything. He fixates and he is unable to see the bigger picture. When RJ is on task, it’s hard for him to think of anything else other than the steps that will get him to the end result. He isn’t easily side-tracked, which could be considered beneficial, but RJ’s tunnel-visioned to the point of absolute obsession. He won’t sleep, won’t eat, won’t do anything else until the task has been completed.
- UNSTABLE: After everything he has been through, ‘unstable’ is an absolute understatement. RJ is unpredictable, prone to violent tendencies, and his moods come and go like the wind. He’s impossible to predict and has little to no handle on his emotions and the actions that follow.
- DESPERATE: RJ, above all else, wants to belong. He will do whatever it takes to please the hand that feeds him in hopes that he might receive praise or love in return. He’s never been worthy, according to Mr. Colt, and RJ has run out of ideas of how to please his handler and superiors. He’s done everything they asked, and will continue to do so. They say jump, and he asks how high.
POWERS AND/OR ABILITIES: RJ is a master assassin. With this comes the general expertise in a vast assortment of weaponry and hand-to-hand combat. His training has been very thorough, and it is safe to say RJ excels at every challenge thrown his way. RJ is a master tactician and strategist, and speaks a wide assortment of languages. Due to being injected with the super soldier formula, RJ was gifted enhanced strength/durability/speed/agility/reflexes/healing and also (in theory) an extended lifespan.
WEAKNESSES: RJ is a puppet, and his handler holds the strings. For the most part, RJ has not required “activation”” as he goes on his missions quite willingly, though the threat is there if needed. His identity has been stripped from him, and all that he’s known for years is the Winter Solider. He does not remember a time before HYDRA with only fleeting memories passing as dreams from his childhood. RJ is unstable and is prone to episodes of becoming unhinged where he exhibits extreme violence and lack of restraint. There’s a sense of desperation to him, an instinctual need to be loved by the hand that feeds him, though to be honest the best RJ has gotten is kicked while being fed from the floor. In a sense, he’s very naive for the fact that his social skills are greatly lacking and he’s desperate for any sort of affection or love that he’ll take what he can get.
IC PORTION; DETAILS —
WHAT BROUGHT YOUR CHARACTER TO SOKOVIA? The ISA. RJ doesn’t quite know where he was before Sokovia - he was kept indoors mostly, and the windows of every car he was transported in were dark.
DID THEY SIGN THE ACCORDS? WHY OR WHY NOT? No, simply for the fact that he wasn’t asked. He’d do anything asked of him by his handler, so this is a possibility in the future.
PROVIDE 3-5 HEADCANONS RELATED TO YOUR CHARACTER:
RJ loved any and all media he was able to get his hands on during his time in HYDRA, the majority of which were old and classic movies. He watched the variety he was able to keep in his room to the point of memorization, and old/black-and-white movies are his comfort.
That being said, a big bulk of how RJ learned how to socialize at all comes from these movies. His only interaction for over a decade was with HYDRA agents and Colt, and so most of his knowledge of how socialization works was gathered from the same ten movies he watched on repeat.
RJ has a sweet tooth that he has little to no control over. This could be due to the fact that he was vastly food insecure for the entirety of his adolescence, but RJ will eat an entire pan of brownies all to himself in just a matter of minutes.
Sleep is evasive to RJ and has been since his training began, though it has gotten much worse since he was injected with the super soldier serum. He survives on just a few hours a night, and that’s enough to keep him functioning.
RJ keeps a journal, and it details his training from the time he began at HYDRA up until the present. It’s elaborate, spares no details, and is helpful for him to try to keep his head on straight.
RJ’s activation sequence has never been used, though he has been conditioned with one. It is: crimson, wistful, thirteen, current, snarl, eclipse, seven, anguish, twenty-one, voyage.
CHARACTER BIO —
tw: parental death, manipulation, heavy on the abuse/dv, murder
In truth, RJ remembered nothing before HYDRA. He did not even know what “RJ” stands for. That was likely their intention, and they were successful. His file, inaccessible to him and under highly restricted access, would detail the following:
Richard James Boyle was born on Christmas Eve in the year 1999 in Woodbridge, New Jersey. His father was a conman, an outright criminal in his own right but he was good at what he did. His mother was sickly and his father couldn’t make ends meet, and so Richard Sr. turned to bigger crime in an attempt to keep his family afloat. Six bank heists in two years, and then he was caught and sent to prison when RJ was still a baby. His mother made do, they survived best they could until they couldn’t anymore. She passed away when RJ was five, and his memories of her even before HYDRA were fleeting. He dreamed of her sometimes, even still, but he could never remember her face.
Foster homes were the name of the game for the rest of his childhood.. Nothing was consistent, it felt as though as soon as he got settled he was packing up his belongings in a big black trash bag and being shipped off to the next one. This happened for several years, until his tenth year. The final family he was with sold RJ over to HYDRA for the cash, and with that RJ Boyle ceased to exist in the world he was used to and his training began.
He was handed over to Colt, who was RJ’s handler and responsible for both raising and training RJ. He was raised in a HYDRA facility, in a room that could be described as something one would see in a prison or a hospital, with Mr. Colt coming and going. The brainwashing began almost immediately, as Colt and his superiors wanted to ensure that their new asset was fully under their thumb.
RJ was the newest addition to the Winter Soldier program, an initiative that had been long since abandoned. The history that followed was painful at best, and absolutely formative. Mr. Colt could be described as cruel, manipulative and abusive. RJ was not fed consistently, often beaten and tormented, and was taught that love and affection would be something that he would have to earn. RJ was told he showed potential, was gifted with talent and it was his duty to use that talent and potential. RJ was told that any worthwhile person would not waste their potential, would grab it by the horns and take it, and only then would he have value. His early trainings and missions were sloppy, and RJ was punished severely for this. He didn’t like killing, wasn’t particularly good at it, but that would change soon. He found it was easier not to think about it, treat it like any other job, and that was when things began to turn around.
His education was limited, certainly not formal, and only included what HYDRA and Mr. Colt thought would benefit their long term goals. So much of his training revolved around the Winter Soldier, whom RJ was taken in to emulate. RJ spent hours on end studying all the footage there was on Bucky Barnes, the original Winter Soldier, and reading every single file HYDRA had on the man. Over time, he could dictate the files from memory alone and could replicate the Winter Soldier's fighting style. Better yet, he knew his weaknesses, and his real mission became clear: to defeat the Winter Soldier. On top of this, RJ was shown the files of every other vigilante that HYDRA had at their disposal: he studied and studied and studied, and then practiced what he had learned.
He was seventeen when HYDRA began to fall, and RJ was shuffled around more often than not, moving from base to base as the organization struggled to stay hidden and alive. RJ’s training would continue, and he began to exceed expectations. He won every spar, he could assemble and disassemble every weapon handed to him with his eyes closed before using the weapon in question in record time. He was damn near undefeatable in the field, and finally he felt worthy. Mr. Colt disagreed.
On Christmas Day in 2020, RJ was given the super soldier serum after eleven years of training. He had been preparing for this for years, had studied and worked harder than he thought he ever could, and he finally proved worthy to the program. RJ was better than before - faster, stronger, more resilient, enhanced in every way. He was put through a myriad of tests, several field missions, to put his skills to the test and RJ aced every single one of them. One better, he did not require the hypnosis in place to force his hand and went on his missions willingly. He was no longer sloppy - he was clean, precise and deadly.
He was shipped off to Sokovia in February of 2021 with instructions that he would be working for the ISA’s Task Force. He was an agent, and would be at their disposal. Mr. Colt would not be coming with him, something that RJ was unsure of how to feel about as he had been the hand to feed him all these years. He would have a new handler, an unknown, and RJ didn’t like those. After all, it was his job to be prepared and stay one step ahead.
But it was nice to have a little more freedom. RJ Boyle was instructed to immerse himself in Matchak, to gain intel, to get comfortable with the lay of the land. The Winter Soldier would be needed soon, and it was RJ’s job to be sure he was ready.

47 Reasons Why I Fear Islam - (Reason 1)
-1-I am suspicious of any religion that demands the death of any member who quits. Polls taken worldwide consistently reveal that the majority of Muslims in the world want the laws of whatever country they are living within changed to allow the execution of any Muslim who leaves Islam (if the laws do not already allow this). The majority of Muslims in the world also want the laws of whatever country they are living in to make blasphemy of Islam an offense punishable by death. The majority of Muslims in the world also want the laws of whatever country they are living within to allow for hand amputation as a punishment for theft. This frightens me because it indicates that so called “moderate Muslims” are in the minority, possibly far below the 50% mark of Muslims. 10%? It also frightens me because it shows that Muslims are not inclined to assimilate into Western society; they will generally NOT acquire Western values. A few will; but most? No. It frightens me because the bulk of Muslims expect whatever country they are living within to change and adapt to their own religion. Most moderate Muslims fully expect to slowly destroy EVERYTHING non-Islamic, over a period of centuries. Western culture honors the individual, The Unique Individual, and tries to provide a framework for different people, with their differing backgrounds, to work constructively together. Islamic rulings deny the value of the individual. People only exist so that their God will have worshippers. And their God is delighted in proportion and intensity of the received worship. (Asking for a Muslim who pretends to be my friend: Since a female Muslim is only worth half a male Muslim, does that mean that her worship only delights the Islamic God half as much?) As I write this, 9/25/2013 10:20 AM, significantly more than half the Muslims in the world want to kill any Muslim who quits their religion. What does this say about Islam? What does this say about what Islam does to people? One of my favorite TV shows is LIFE, starring Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi. It only ran for 2 seasons. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001I24BTA/ref=dv_dp_ep4 Episode 4, Season 2 of LIFE is based on the Stanford Prison Experiment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment This Wikipedia entry details what the Guard/Prisoner Dynamic does to people. In the LIFE episode: “Us Against Them -- A university’s prison experiment goes horribly wrong when one of the students acting as a corrections officer ends up dead.” The show demonstrates in a dramatic way, how civilized college kids can be made to behave in savage ways, doing terrible things they never could have imagined they would ever do, just by organizing them within a Guard/Prisoner Dynamic. I believe this is what Islam does to people: it sets up a Guard/Prisoner Dynamic. Male Muslims are the Guards. Female Muslims are the Prisoners. Male head of a household: Warden. Sons: Rookie Guards. Religious leaders would be the Western equivalent of Rock Stars. Super-Wardens? Outside the prison walls: “Infidels! We must make the prison larger! Need more prisoners!” Anyone who quits Islam: “Escaped prisoner! Kill! Kill!” Obviously, I am over-simplifying. But I think I’m onto something. A useful First Approximation? Is Islam a force for Good, or a force for Evil? You tell me! Send me a tweet. ++++------- tweet ~ Islam theologizes the inferiority of Muslim women as being worth 1/2 of Muslim men. Gabriel, Ph.D., Mark tells how when he quit Islam to become a Christian, his father tried to kill him as he ran away: His own father, with tears streaming down his face, shooting bullets at him. ++++------- tweet ~ Christianity + Judaism + Technology = Man on the Moon (Reaching for Heaven?) \\ Islam + Technology = Rioting Muslim Mobs (Hell on Earth?) ++++------- http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Islam_and_Apostasy The majority of Muslims in the world want anyone who quits Islam to be killed. The stats show that most Muslims are inflexible on this point. Keep it in mind, before you convert to Islam. He also argues that anyone who does not believe in Islam is under a Death Sentence. ++++------- tweet ~ Female Suicide Bombers in Paradise: “You are a brand new Virgin! We’re giving you to Male Bomber #45889! Happy Eternity!” ++++------- http://www.city-journal.org/2011/21_3_muslim-economy.html In this article Guy Sorman gets into the whole sharia banking thing, how Islamic banks do all the formerly forbidden Infidel monetary practices like interest and credit, but just describe them differently so the imams back home don’t get upset. Guy also brings up the point that any Sunni imam can define what it means to leave Islam and become an apostate under a death sentence, and that this tends to discourage any innovation. Why try something new, if you might get killed for it? ++++------- I am amused. Muslims, always concerned with the letter of the law, never the intent of the law, are now using forbidden Infidel banking practices of “interest” and “credit” which are illegal under Islamic law—but the Muslims just give these practices different names. So, it’s OK! Is this Islam lying to itself? Or is this an instance of Muslim banking specialists lying to Muslim imams? Or are they all “in on the game” and cool with the Great Big Lie? This whole “describing things differently” thing to conform with Islamic law actually is an Islamic legal precedent, if moderate Muslims wish to take advantage of it. Feminists, get on this! If Muslim bankers can find a “description” of the hateful Infidel banking practice of “derivatives” which conforms to Sharia law, perhaps Muslim feminists can find a “description” of women which will give them equal rights with men under Islamic law. There may be a better approach, but this Islamic legal precedent of “describing things differently” may be of some use. Possibly “Infidels” might be described as “innocent future Muslims” so as to avoid bloodshed. ++++------- tweet ~ 66% of Protestant pastors in the US believe that Islam is “Dangerous” * (Harper’s) ++++------- http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id.9182/pub_detail.asp In this article, AMIL IMANI argues that Islam is not a religion, but rather a cult. The way Amil Imani describes it, Islam does seem to fit the definition. ++++------- tweet ~ Which is the better TwitterName for that guy? Ahmadinedildo or Ahmadildojad? Muslims, by wide majorities in Egypt, Pakistan, and Nigeria want current laws changed so that anyone who exits Islam can be executed. ++++------- At present, Muslims who leave Islam are sometimes killed by family members or, occasionally, angry Muslim mobs. So I can see why Muslims want the laws of their nation changed to kill those who leave Islam. Let the state deal with it. This would save family embarrassment. I wonder if there are stats on what percentage of Muslims quit Islam and survive? ++++------- tweet ~ So which do the #TeaParty Tweople hate more? Black man Obama in White House? Not to keep talking about him, but you said he’s regarded as the worst k-celebrity? That’s weird that they deem him worst than his “friends”. Maybe because his shit is STILL dragging on months later?
The molka stuff was only a small part of a much larger scandal. The reason there’s still so much discourse about it among VIPs is because, based on my observations at the time, his presence in the molka chats is what prompted most fans to drop him (and many of them stopped paying attention after that). His remaining fans know this and are focusing so much of their fight on that in an effort to reverse the narrative and regain support for him. It’s a complete waste of time though; they’re running circles around themselves trying to disprove something Seungri himself already admitted to ages ago. “Those messages aren’t my entire life,” he said when asked why he didn’t reprimand JJY for the illegal videos he shared in the chats. He was there, he saw, he knew.
(What’s funny is they can’t even keep their own stories straight; I’ve had anons in my inbox the last few days trying to erase his presence in the chats with “It wasn’t Seungri, it was Lee Jonghyun!” and “It wasn’t Seungri, it was another Lee Seunghyun!” And not a peep about his Chosun interview. It sure is funny watching them trip over themselves trying to get it right when the answer has been right there in front of them all along.)
I think about this sometimes… how for those who weren’t in the fandom back then and/or weren’t following along, much of Seungri’s role in the Burning Sun controversy is going to be lost to time. New fans will take an interest in Big Bang and join the fandom and no doubt they’ll ask, “What happened to Seungri?” And there’s just no way to sum it all up cleanly and concisely. There’s too much. It would be nice to see someone put together a timeline of events, but I have a feeling the only people possessing that kind of dedication to the case nowadays are the fans still committed to defending him. No thanks.
Anyway, just for funsies, here’s a list of as many allegations as I can think of off the top of my head, with explanations that I tried (and failed ofc) to keep condensed. Just various things for anyone who’s new here…
- The alleged drugging and sexual assault of women by wealthy clients in the VIP room at the club Burning Sun. Burning Sun was widely known as Seungri’s club as he had spent the better part of the prior year (2018) promoting it, calling it his, DJ-ing there, etc… proudly boasting throughout his solo promotions about how, unlike most celebrities, he doesn’t just loan out his name and face, he manages his businesses himself. Because of this, no matter how hard he backpedaled when the news about Burning Sun broke, insisting that he wasn’t responsible for the day-to-day operations of the club and didn’t have a clue about what was happening there, there was no separating himself from it completely. He was in too deep already. Worse, media got their hands on some club documents and found that he did in fact have part-ownership of the club – he was one of its investors and was even listed as the executive director. Granted, the percentage of shares he held was a very small one, but he really should have been forthcoming with that info from the start because this is what began the narrative that painted him as a liar. Or should I say he outed himself as one.
- Widespread corruption within the police force. Not just with regards to Burning Sun but many bars and clubs throughout the Gangnam area. It was suspected that local police had arrangements with the clubs to look the other way and often neglected to investigate crimes being reported on their premises. Minors entering the clubs, drug use, sexual violence, etc. This leads to…
- Police collusion… i.e., suspicions of having friends in high places. Seungri was in a chat with friends in which they discussed Choi Jonghoon having a DUI covered up and kept quiet, the news suppressed. Not even his own agency knew. Seungri said, “Don’t think that it’ll be covered up the next time you drink and drive. [Name redacted] hyung used his own money to keep them from telling.” His “Korean law is shit, that’s why I love it” comment in another chat didn’t earn him any brownie points with the public either.
- More on bribing the police: Seungri and his business partner Yoo Insuk had connections with a high-ranking police official, one referred to in the chats as “police chief”. This turned out to be Superintendent Yoon, who was suspected of alerting them to violations related to his other club, Monkey Museum, and helping them avoid prosecution for it. Seungri had registered the business as a general restaurant but began operating the business outside the limits of an ordinary restaurant (installing a stage, dance floor, etc) despite being aware that it could become a legal issue down the road. He was suspected to have done so for the purpose of paying lower taxes.
This is where the Food & Sanitation Act charge comes in. Not especially major in itself, the bigger issue was Seungri suggesting in the chats that they could just bribe the police if there was ever a crackdown.
Superintendent Yoon had meals and went on golf outings with Seungri & Yoo Insuk. They said that he paid for his portion every time, however it was found that SR & Yoo had in fact treated him on a few occasions. Big Bang concert tickets were also given as gifts. However, it was determined that the value of what they gave him didn’t quite meet the threshold to be considered a crime, so bribery charges were dropped… on a technicality. Superintendent Yoon is currently being detained on abuse of power charges related to another case.
- Financial crimes, i.e., embezzlement of Burning Sun funds (together with Yoo Insuk, totaling almost a million dollars) and embezzlement of funds from Monkey Museum to pay the attorney’s fees for a DJ accused of sexual assault.
- Prostitution mediation, i.e., arranging sex workers for foreign investors of his 2015 startup Yuri Holdings. He was investigated for 2 instances of this occurring in late 2015 (Club Arena and the “Seung-tsby” Christmas Party), and another at his big birthday bash in the Philippines in 2017. Charges related to the Philippines party were dropped as it couldn’t “legally be seen as prostitution” but I personally think the evidence presented is substantial enough to warrant suspicion.
- Soliciting prostitution for himself. At first he claimed it was “someone he knew before” and said he hadn’t paid her for sex, but police were able to trace payment records back to the establishment where she worked. He reportedly admitted to the charge at his arrest warrant hearing in May.
- Molka (spycam), i.e., secretly filmed photos and videos of women in sexual situations, taken by Seungri’s friends and business partners and shared in a group chat in which he was present. Questions were raised about why he didn’t at least reprimand them. It was later discovered that not only were the victims filmed without their consent, many of them had been drugged and raped… and some were even used against the women as blackmail.
- Instigating the destruction of evidence by advising his friends to change their phones when these chats were released to the public. Reportedly, of the phones handed to police, all but one were new / wiped clean.
- Here’s something I’ll forever be curious about: it was reported that Seungri had been using Burning Sun funds to pay his YGE-appointed manager a separate salary (in addition to his regular salary from the agency) without informing the company. And it was no small amount. I’m not sure why he did this or why, exactly, it’s a problem, but apparently it’s a big no-no because when YGE learned of it Seungri’s manager was promptly let go.
- Gambling. This first came up back in the spring when a chat was released that showed Seungri talking about money he’d won through gambling and telling a business acquaintance he could win big too. In response to this, Seungri said he was only “bluffing”, that he hadn’t really won any money through gambling… Well, months later he was formally called in for questioning on suspicions of habitual gambling and illegal currency exchange transactions. The currency exchange suspicions were dropped in the end, the gambling charge he reportedly admitted to. As for that chat? I think it’s safe to say he wasn’t bluffing that day.
- There was also that gross chat that appeared to show him offering women to a business acquaintance? The man was traveling and asked for a woman, and Seungri responded with photos of a few women, detailed descriptions of their personalities, and price. Pretty sure this is where the trafficking accusations you still see floating around occasionally come from. His explanation for that was essentially “It wasn’t what it looked like.” He said it was about travel companions, not sex, and they never went through with it. IDK what to make of it, but let’s be honest, that was going to reflect badly on him no matter how he spun it.
- Things got really wild when speculation about him having connections to the Chinese triad (organized crime) started up due to his business relationship with a powerful woman known as Madam Lin. She was one of his investors and according to police statements, is believed to have aided in helping him embezzle funds from Burning Sun. Korean police summoned her for questioning and requested her cooperation multiple times to no avail.
…I’ll stop there, but just keep in mind there is more, suspicions that didn’t seem to lead anywhere in the end but that dealt blow after blow after blow to what little was left of his reputation. The whole thing became mind-boggling. I think it’s easier for us as IVIPs to forget the fervor that swept the nation as this scandal erupted because we weren’t really there for it, not in the same way as Koreans who must have seen it plastered across every major news station day in and day out for months… people who saw their fellow citizens protesting in the streets against the atrocities reported at Burning Sun and the corruption in the police force that failed to prevent it. And yes… in a way, it’s still dragging on. Seungri was known for having connections everywhere, even where you’d least expect it; here that reputation of his worked against him as the floodgates opened and he became the connecting piece for all the nasty that came pouring out. And you know what they say: the bigger they are, the harder they fall. He wanted to be famous. Now he’s infamous.

*whispering* solavellan sex on the Normandy
ANON. I don’t even know if you’re still out there, I’m pretty sure you sent this like a year ago, but I want you to know that I have been working on this prompt ever since you sent it!!!
Fun fact #1: I have never played any of the original Mass Effect games.
Fun fact #2: I had so much reading about them and watching videos and concocting headcanons that I accidentally put more energy into that than into smut?
(I’m sorryyyy I hope it was worth the wait if you are still out there)
@dadrunkwriting
My Ko-Fi || My Commissions (Slots currently open as of 10/4/19)
Pairing: Solavellan
Rating: Mature/Explicit (it’s right on that line - sexual content but not a lot and not the most explicit I have ever done)
********************
Solas was fairly certain that the new soldier Commander Shepard had brought on board the Normandy SR-2 was doomed to be just like all the others - more brawn than brain, all muscle and no substance. He tried not to let it matter to him too much. He was here to take advantage of Cerberus’s technology and resources to further his own research into biotics. Everything else was window dressing.
In the case of the new soldier, the window dressing simply happened to be rather striking.
She had skin like mahogany, and red, tightly curled hair worn in a flat top hair cut, and eyes like steel. Her name was Ellana Lavellan, and she was the first person to pull him out of the tight cocoon of his lab - really, out of the tight cocoon he’d woven around himself - in years.
“You know, I was under the impression that our doctor was a salarian,” she said when she first wandered in one day.
“I am neither a doctor nor a salarian, as you can see,” he said, gesturing at the insignia that designated him as a scientist. “You are thinking of Mordin Solus. His quarters are next door. My name is Solas, if there are to be introductions.”
She laughed, and it was a surprisingly musical laugh. He wasn’t sure why he expected all soldiers to be gunmetal and grim looks. She was off duty, and in a tank top that bared her toned arms. He took in her pointed ears. He’d known from her name, of course, that they shared at least a race in common. It had been many centuries since their people were considered a separate but lesser species on the planet called Thedas, but there was still a twinge of happy recognition at the sight of her. Every other member of this crew whose ancestors hailed from Thedas was human. There might be some commonality between them, at least, if they were both elves.
Then again, as she sauntered around the lab, her head cocked in curiosity, he saw the tattoo marking the upper part of her back. Three long, arched branches that likely continued all the way down to her hips. She was likely of Dalish descent then. Or, worse, one of the people who got such tattoos and had no idea what they meant.
Solas ducked his head, returning to the readout on his omnitool.
“Well, you have to admit it is confusing. Solus, Solas. What are you doing?”
She was leaning on his workstation. She smelled like gun oil. Usually people backed away by this point, put off by his arch manner. Why hadn’t she?
“Testing this new implant for Commander Shepard,” he said.
“Interesting. You’ll have to explain how it works to me, sometime. When are you off duty?”
That was how she did it in the end, how she drew him out - she was relentless. Like a hunter on a trail with everything to lose. Except she, like him, had nothing to lose. Her parents were long dead - victims of the same slaver raid on Mindoir that had taken Shepard’s own parents, apparently that was how they knew each other - and she had struggled to find a place for herself since then. She’d been in the Alliance military (another connection with their esteemed commander, who Solas had to admit was growing on him too) but left that life behind, hoping for a new start, only to be drawn back into danger once more. The Illusive Man had given Solas no reason to believe that the Normandy SR-2 would be an easy mission, but he was still surprised by the level of violence they encountered - by the bruises and blood he saw on Ellana whenever she passed his lab on her way to Mordin’s, needing healing.
“I thought you were a sniper,” he chided her after one particularly bad episode. He was holding her left wrist, examining a burn that radiated up the inside of her left arm.
“I am,” she said. “And I thought you were a scientist, and not a doctor.”
He had not asked to take her hand, to examine her. He dropped it. But she just reached out and touched his hand - a touch that burned, that brought back memories, that made him remember just how long it had been since he had been touched. He shivered and he knew Ellana saw it. Solas had been living under masks for years now. He knew she saw through them all.
“I’ll be okay,” she said. “I promise.”
*
He only had the privilege of watching Ellana fight once. Shepard was a formidable biotic herself, and rarely brought other biotics on her missions. But when they went in pursuit of someone called Archangel, she said she wanted the backup.
“I’d also like a measure of stealth,” Shepard went on. “And Jack is, well -”
“Not subtle?” Solas said, dryly.
“Very diplomatic. We’ll bring Lavellan, too.”
Solas tried to ignore the little thrill that ran through him at the thought. He wasn’t successful.
She was a wonder with her rifle. Swift, silent, precise, powerful. She made shots he would have thought impossible, covered him and Shepard with an instinctive ease and tactical awareness. He watched her when he could. He may have even been staring.
“See something you like, Solas?” She asked.
Precise as one of her bullets, blunt as a mallet, and her smile was so sly, and Shepard was distracted by the turian that turned out to be Archangel. Garrus Vakarian, no doubt, if Solas’s research was to be believed.
“Watching you was - impressive. You move differently than any other soldier I have seen. Almost as if it is a dance.”
Ellana slung her rifle over her back and leaned against a wall, her grey eyes alight.
“Are you implying that I am graceful?”
“I am declaring it.” The words slipped out before he could consider them, and that was the danger, wasn’t it, of stepping outside his cocoon, his lab, his routine?
“I was equally impressed by you,” Ellana said. “Your biotics - it’s like it’s totally natural for you.”
He shrugged, pretended he was not complimented, that her words did not light him up from the inside out. “Elves generally take to it better than other Thedosians. Have you read any of the theories that our people were once like asari, with similarly long lives and control over our nervous systems that produced effects so startling they were once called magic?”
Ellana looked away, rubbing the back of her neck. “I was too busy being a dumb grunt to read stuff like that. But I’ve heard of it a little. Maybe you could explain more sometime?”
“Of course.”
*
It was soft and easy after that, except for when it wasn’t, when they talked about her Dalish heritage, her fierce belief that there was something important about sticking to traditions, even if there was little basis in fact for them.
“Of course my tattoos aren’t what made me an adult,” she retorted one day. “But getting them made me feel connected to something bigger than myself. Is that really so bad?”
“But the implications that they were once -”
“Oh, fuck the implications, Solas. I’m tired of the implications. I live here, and now, and I was just trying to share something about myself with someone who I thought cared about me without it turning into a big fucking deal.”
Her voice rang against the metal walls of his lab. She appeared almost immediately ashamed of her anger. He’d noticed that about her too. That was his job. To notice things, gather intel, play the Illusive Man’s game long enough to figure out if it was true, if biotics were inherent to his race, if they could perhaps be made inherent once again, raising the status of all Thedosians in the Council’s eyes…
But so much of what he had been noticing lately was her.
“I am sorry,” he said. He reached out and touched her hand. He’d been getting used to that. Little touches.
Ellana Lavellan kissed him then, full on the lips, without even the slightest warning, and he was sitting on a stool and though she was a slight woman this made her a little taller than him, and he tilted his head back, let himself fall into the kiss, wrapped his arms around her and felt her warmth and life and just how much he wanted this. Wanted a life that was not just secrets and watching and never partaking.
Ellana pulled back, looked down at him.
“I hope that was okay,” she said. “You’re not going to report me to the commander for sexual harassment, are you?”
Solas kissed her again, hungrier this time, fingers digging into her muscles, the solid reality of her. The realest thing he’d felt in years.
“So you are tired of the implications, then?” he asked when they parted.
“Like I said,” Ellana grinned, sliding into his lap, straddling him. “Fuck the implications.”
*
Solas could not help himself, of course. He had to tell her that there were considerations. Well, fuck the considerations too, she’d said jokingly, but she respected his boundaries nonetheless. Because there were considerations. He knew more than even Shepard did. He knew that the supposedly disabled Collector ship they were headed to was a trap. He tried to tell Ellana not to go on that mission. To convince Shepard to bring Garrus instead.
“Don’t go soft on me. Besides - I have to beat Vakarian’s high score,” she said, and kissed him.
He knew that to the Illusive Man, all the people on this ship were merely pawns at play in a larger game. He had guessed at what that larger game might be. He had willingly chosen to be a bigger pawn in that game, to do the things the Illusive Man asked of him as long as he could continue his research. And he knew Ellana now - knew that she would not take any of this lightly, that she had a soldier’s sense of loyalty and honor, old-fashioned as the tattoos on her back.
And he knew that he wanted her in all the ways one person could want another. He knew with increasing clarity as time went on that he wanted her more than he wanted anything else.
But to turn his back now -
The formless shadow of what lay beyond the Omega-4 Relay loomed larger and larger, and in its shadow things grew clearer and clearer. Clear as Ellana’s grey eyes, clear as her perception of the world. They might not come back from this mission. And the Illusive Man would not care, not even if he lost one of his foremost biotics researchers, one of his best spies. And Solas’s work would not care if he was not there to finish it. He looked out at the vastness of space outside the Normandy and that thought grew clearer and clearer.
No one would care except for her.
So he went to her the night before they would make their last stand. Her room was small and cramped and her bed was even more small but she was alive in it, alive in her body, already stripped down to her simple training bra and standard issued underwear when he arrived and yet beautiful as any ancient nebula he’d ever seen.
“Are you sure?” she asked him, finding the buttons on his lab coat, undressing him, her eyes bright in the dark.
“I have never been more sure of anything than I am of you,” he said.
So he stripped off all the things that made her a warrior - the training bra, the briefs, the dog tags - and he stripped off all the things that made him a scientist, a spy - the lab coat and the gloves and every single mask - and he loved her. She was warm and firm beneath him and he slid between her thighs - lingered there a long time, just rocking back and forth, just kissing her, just feeling her, the silky drag of skin on skin - and there, in the darkness of space, he loved her, and she loved him. She rolled him over and took her turn on top, not pushing him inside her yet, not even asking him to touch her, to ease her own wet ache. She just felt, explored, touched.
And then when she did take him in her hand raise herself up, and sink back down on him, taking him within her - when she did lace both of her hands with his and pin them over his head as she rode him, as she kissed him - then she was so impossibly real, so impossibly alive, that Solas forgot of the possibility of death. There was only her, them, the light of distant stars, of his own biotics flaring.
“I love you,” she said, and from another woman’s lips it would have felt false to hear those words said when they were still joined, still making love. But this was Ellana, and Solas had watched her, and he knew she was nothing if not sincere.
“I love you,” he said, surrendering, bucking his hips up into her. “I love you, I love you -”
There were people walking down the hall outside - Taylor, Lawson, Tali, Thane, all on their way to some distraction or another, all of them waiting out the end like they were. They tried to fall silent, to move to a different position, each time they passed, and they wound up on the cold metal floor, cocooned in blankets, Solas on top of her this time, looking down at her, mesmerized, angling himself to make it good for her, so he would rub against her in all the right places, so he could watch her when she came, and she squirmed a hand between them to make it happen because she was nothing if not self-sufficient, but he did get to watch her, to feel her from the inside out as she came. Then he was gone too, wave after sweet wave, and it was all too much and too good.
“Hey,” she said in the aftermath, touching his cheek, drawing him back. “It’s okay, you know. It’s gonna be okay.”
He kissed her hand, pretended she was right, that the Omega-4 Relay was not on their horizon now. It was easier than it ever had been. The pretending. She made it easy, lying there in his arms in the nest they’d made on the floor. It was going to be okay. They would make it through the relay and what came after. They’d walk away from Cerberus, the Illusive Man, Shepard, together. They’d see what the world was like without all of those things, without masks. Together.
Solas slept, and waited for tomorrow.

Do you do any serious warhammer stuff or have another Warhammer blog? Just curious!
Uhhh. I mean, I write serious 40k stuff, but I don’t share it or anything, just because I don’t see the point. I also think 40k has more than enough seriousness around it that I prefer to goof around with it rather than just add to the edge, so to speakI don’t have another 40k blog or anything, but I’ll stick a piece of seriousness that I wrote under a read more here. I hope this... answers your questionTl;dr: No srs. Only meme. It’s what Sanguinius would want
As the last xenos fell, an almost deafening silence tookhold of the generator room.Or maybe he was just partially deaf now, Alexei thought, wincing as aftershocks ofArtemis’ boltgun reverberated in his ears. The too-large weapon had reduced thesmaller aliens to a series of pallid-looking smears; hurling them backwards andbursting them like old fruit with a level of violence that made Alexei’s ownlaspistol, held tightly in his grip, look like a child’s toy by comparison. If the techpriest was botheredat all by the roaring discharge of his weapon, he certainly didn’t show it,simply sweeping the gun back and forth a few times on its servo arm beforeangling the still-smoking barrel slightly upwards, out of harm’s way.“Still think it’s just a feral infestation, Artemis?” Alexei asked as hestarted to pick his way between pieces of obliterated Tyranid.“Negative, One-Called-Alexei.” Artemis studied the results of his handiworkwith a clinically detached air, the optic lenses on the left side of his facewhirring and contracting as they shifted from carcass to carcass. “This Onedoes not believe it is standard Tyranid behaviour to target two when there aremany more elsewhere.”“So your boss is wrong.” Alexei toed a shattered limb out of his way, edgingtowards the bigger xeno at the back of the room.“The Arch-Magos is not necessarily-““Artemis.”The Techpriest fell silent for a few moments as Alexei looked over his shoulderwith a tiny, amused smile. Artemis blinked with his flesh eye then, in a verynon-mechanicus fashion, shrugged slightly. “The Arch-Magos is likely incorrect about his postulations regarding theinfestation.”“Was that so hard?”Artemis blinked again. “Vocalisation is not difficult as This One has notsustained any injuries to-““Rhetorical question, Artemis.”“Oh.” Artemis started to follow after Alexei, his heavy prosthetic legs impactingupon the stonework with a series of weighty reports. “This One does notunderstand rhetoric very well.”“That’s ok.” Alexei halted before the remnants of the xenothat had nearly taken his head off before Artemis had blown it clear across theroom in a hail of explosive shots. It was more intact than the others, by virtueof size and natural armour; possessing most of a head, and part of an uppertorso. One long, mangled arm lay limply outstretched, as though even in deathit had tried to kill the human before it. Viciously sharp, rust-coloured talonsextended in half-foot sickles from what remained of its fingers. That was aboutall Alexei could discern, though; the rest of the creature was a mangled twistof chitin, ragged muscle and acrid-smelling entrails that glistened with asickly pallor under the synthetic lighting. “Ugly fucker, whatever you are.”
“Genestealer.” Artemis’ bass-laden, vox-enhanced voice drifted over Alexei’sshoulder.“Pardon?”“This species of Xenos is designated as Genestealer.”The techpriest repeated, almost conversationally. “This One has several filesstored within cognitive data spools, if One-Called-Alexei would like to perusethem.”“Maybe later. Thanks, Artemis.” Alexei nudged the alien’s -Genestealer’s- headto the side, pulling a face as the motion caused a long, slightly barbed tongueto loll out of its predatory-looking mouth. Nothing about a Tyranid could beeven a little normal, apparently. He’d figured that maybe being able to look atone of the things dead would somehow assuage the creeping discomfort that theybrought him, but now, being able to see just how other the Genestealers were, he felt even less alright about them.
It definitely didn’t help that the Genestealer’s eyes wereglistening pools of inky blackness, void of light save for a tiny, reflectivespot that Alexei assumed functioned as a pupil. Even in death, it felt like hewas being watched. He shivered.
No light, no clarity; just a swirling, endless abyss fullof-Shadows.Alexei’s breath caught in his throat. “One-Called-Alexei, is something wrong?”“What did the Psyker say, before he blew his brains out?” Alexei asked quietly.“The One-Called-Piotr mentioned a shadow watching him, This One recalls.”“Not just him, Artemis.” Alexei swallowed. “All of us.”With a halting slowness, almost as if being forced into motion by an unseenmaster, the Genestealer’s eye rotated in its socket, locking an infinitelyblack stare with Alexei’s pale green one. “Yeah.” Alexei levelled his laspistol at the Genestealer’s eye. “I see you, too.”

Obscurials: Before, During... After?
What we know about Obscurus and Obscurials is very limited.
We know:
- An Obscurus is NOT a magical creature, so it’s not like a dementor or lethifold. It’s not a beast at all, there are not wild Obscurus, which means that they are unique to their Obscurial and tied to them entirely.
- An Obscurus is formed when someone with magic represses their magic entirely; that person is called an Obscurial.
- An Obscurial has to have trauma/fear driving the repression; fear is essential to an Obscurus forming
- Obscurus were more common before the International Statute of Secrecy, when magical people feared the repercussions of being found by people who would cause real harm to them.
- Common knowledge in the universe (according to the MACUSA) is that there hasn’t been an Obscurus/Obscurial in centuries, which is obviously false based on both Credence and the Sudanese girl Newt encounters.
- Obscurus are destructive, and at least vaguely parasitic in nature, fuelled by fear and anger and hate.
- There is NO record of an Obscurial surviving past 10 years old.
--- So, knowing that, we have a few characters that we already know of in the original Harry Potter series that had the potential to be Obscurials, just based on their having dark and potentially abusive pasts, but did not:
Harry Potter: Obviously lives in a negative situation, but doesn’t show any signs of being an Obscurial. Violent things don’t happen around him, his magic always acted in ways that protected him in passive ways far more like accidental magic. Also, as part of a running theme of the series, Harry Potter is Oblivious to anything that directly affects him. He ends up on a roof while running away from bullies, that’s cool. His hair grows back overnight, at least he doesn’t have to go to school with that shitty haircut! The glass disappears at the zoo, and he thinks it’s weird but doesn’t think he had anything to do with it.
Harry’s noticing/realising that there was anything in common between those magical experiences is what I think stopped an Obscurus from forming. He wasn’t repressing anything because he did not think he had anything to repress- his obliviousness saved himself.
Tom Riddle Jr.: Lives in an orphanage, which we’re not shown in a favourable light. But, Tom Riddle doesn’t ever view his magic as something negative. He saw it as a tool that would make him more powerful than his bullies. He saw it as something positive that made him unique, instead of it being something that set him as a bigger target for the older children/bullies at the orphanage.
Tom not viewing his magic as negative, or something to be hidden, is what I think stopped him from becoming an Obscurial and forming an Obscurus. His circumstances were negative, but he never allowed fear to dominate his thoughts when it came to the unknown power that made him unique
Merope Gaunt: Probably the one character who came closest to becoming an Obscurial, Merope lived in a heavily emotionally (and physically, going by the attempted strangling Bob Ogden stops) abusive household. Her father Marvolo and her brother Morfin are shown repeatedly calling her a squib and blood traitor. Albus Dumbledore himself says that powerful negative emotions endured on a chronic basis can interfere/drain on a person’s powers, and this certainly applies. They call her a muggle, ask what her wand is even for, and this obviously has taken a toll on her. She’s shut down, barely able to control what little magic she exhibits, when Bob Ogden visits.
Merope’s sources of trauma/fear/abuse are removed from her home and thus her life. During the time they were gone she was able to try and use her magic, eventually snagging Tom Riddle Sr. through duplicitous means. Whether it was by potion or Imperius curse doesn’t really matter, she used magic to get this end. I think that the fact that she had examples of magic that weren’t inherently tied to abuse probably helped her to not entirely repress her magic because of her fear. And thus prevented an Obscurus from fully forming. (Though I DO think her years of not really accepting her magic (mostly due to her family’s abuse) caused a strain on her body that her months in squalor following her releasing Tom Sr. from his mental slavery assisted in causing her death right after giving birth to Tom Riddle Jr.)
--- We’ve only got two examples of character that were/are for SURE Obscurials:
The Sudanese girl Newt encounters at age 8, a few months prior to the first FB film, whose Obscurus is likely the one inside Newt’s trunk held in the stasis bubble. This would explain why Newt is under the impression that he could separate an Obscurus from the Obscurial, as he managed to contain this Obscurus though the Obscurial still perished.
Credence Barebone who we encounter in young adulthood, around age 20. Which is FAR beyond the recorded age Obscurials reach. Double that, in fact. Lives in an incredibly dark situation; surrounded by the New Salemers and their rhetoric, being raised by their leader who hates the concept of magic, and being scorned upon by the general populace because of his adoptive family.
He’s shown to be in at the very least an emotionally abusive household, adopted by a woman who takes corporal punishment way too far. Mary-Lou Barebone says to Credence ‘Your mother was a wicked, unnatural woman!’ which implies that she knew Credence’s birth mother. She beats him often, to the point where Credence doesn’t offer any reasons or excuses when Mary-Lou extends her hand for his belt.
Credence sees magic as a way to escape the life he’s currently leading. He willingly spends time searching for the child Graves (Grindelwald) asks him to find, under the impression that if he succeeded Credence would be taught magic. That he would be able to escape from his current living situation. He fears Mary-Lou and her beatings, but sees Graves (Grindelwald) and his talents as positive (though we don’t know how they came into contact), and truly views himself as being without magical talent.
He knows that anything that sets him apart from anyone else in Mary-Lou’s eyes is cause for a beating. Even without knowing he has magic, he knows anything different is going to cause him pain and thus should never be expressed. He suppresses any kind of individuality, doing and wearing whatever Mary-Lou instructs.
In the newest trailers for the Crimes of Grindelwald, it’s revealed that Credence is a Lestrange (his bloodline will likely play a large role in his surviving as an Obscurial/controlling the Obscurus for so long) but the circumstances surrounding his adoption are still unknown. He obviously doesn’t remember his family of origin, but each time he tried to address Mary-Lou in a familiar way he is rejected, though she doesn’t do much to dissuade him from thinking of Chastity and Modesty as his siblings, she still beats him far more than any of the other children she’s adopted. Which seems to imply that he was quite young when he was adopted, and Mary-Lou likely beat him for any accidental magic without explaining what had caused the punishment.
The Obscurus we see in the film shows us exactly how destructive they can be. First destroying a No-Maj residence, then killing Henry Shaw Jr, and later Mary-Lou/Modesty, all leading toward the final confrontations at the end of the film. Credence has no memory of any of the actions taken by the Obscurus, still believing himself as being powerless until he seemingly has a moment of connection when GrindelGraves says that he has no further use for him when Credence leads him to a frightened Modesty after Mary-Lou’s death-by-Obscurus and Modesty’s death in the wreckage of their building.
Credence seems to have a moment where his conscious wants (escape, magic) and subconscious desires (freedom) meet and agree with one another in Credence’s rage at GrindelGraves. From what we can see, an Obscurus is a separation of the magic of a person from their body. The Obscurus takes actions that align with the subconscious desires of the Obscurial they’re attached to (Henry Shaw’s death is the clearest example of this) but doesn’t seem to leave the Obscurial with the memories associated with those actions. So this anger seems to cause the knowledge of having this power to awaken, and in his rage he’s able to have some semblance of control over the force he’s unleashed.
At the panel I hosted at LeakyCon 2018, at several points people who studied and work in Psychological fields, or in Family Law, talked about the kinds of ways younger minds cope with awful situations. How dissociation breakthroughs, when the affected people start to reconnect these facets of themselves, usually came with emotional extremes. Being pushed to a limit. If we think about Credence and his magic like two facets of someone with a dissociative disorder, those things match up. Credence is a prime example of the repercussions of an abused child and the lengths they go through to survive.
Throughout the final confrontation with the Obscurus, appealing to Credence as a person, showing care, seemed to bring Credence more into himself- he almost calms down completely under Newt and Tina’s affections and promises of protection! But GrindelGraves interrupts their attempts with more violence, immediately bringing Credence back into the fight AND flight response the Obscurus channels in him.
At the end of the film, there’s a focus on one wisp of the Obscurus- and we now know that Credence is not only IN the Crimes of Grindelwald film, but is central to the film. He’s a person again, coming back from being a smoke manifestation of destruction, but we have no knowledge of how much he remembers from that last confrontation.
--- The final person I want to talk about is the one we’re all pretty much positive was an Obscurial
Ariana Dumbledore: Violently attacked by three muggle boys at the age of 6 for accidental magic, their father Percival went to Azkaban for going after the boys in question and Kendra moved the family to Godric’s Hollow. There they kept Ariana out of public view, and many people either didn’t know about the Dumbledore daughter or thought that Kendra had produced a squib.
Aberforth describes the aftereffects of it as ‘it destroyed her… She wouldn’t use magi, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inwards and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet, and scared, and harmless.’ He speaks of how he was able to calm her when no one else could, but that she was unbalanced and had magic exploding out of her at moments she couldn’t hold it in any longer.
During one of her fits of seething rage/uncontrollable magic that Aberforth was not there to curtail, their mother Kendra ended up dead. Only a few months after her death Albus, and Gellert had the argument/duel that ended with Ariana’s death. Ariana is 14 at the time of the event.
The isolation from people outside of the family likely contributed to her fears, but also kept her aware of magic outside of herself not being inherently bad. Traumatic experiences are even more so to the mind of a child- at least, the things that went wrong for me as a child seemed impossibly huge and awful. Actually, most emotions seemed incredibly powerful and extreme from my view as a kid. Everything is the ____ thing EVER, which I can see contributing heavily to Obscurus forming. They’re formed by repression and intense negative emotion- and few have as intense emotions as children.
Aberforth is under the impression that Ariana was attempting to help during the duel, and lost control- but there’s also the distinct possibility that this was her moment of clarity, where her conscious wants (for the fighting to stop) and subconscious desires (for her brothers to get along again) met and she saw no reason to restrain the force within anymore.
Ariana being an Obscurial, and losing control in the duel between Albus and Gellert to reveal this power concealed within her, would also explain Grindelwald’s obsession with Obscurus and Obscurials in the film. There’s little else that could connect the to film series’ together as strongly as the (mostly ignored) Dumbledore past and the Dark Lord who inspired Voldemort.
(I have a silly side theory that Ariana’s Obscurus, after her death, whatever little bit of it had thought, put itself into the Hog’s Head portrait. Why else would Aberforth have a portrait of her when she was so helpless instead of when she was happy?)
Credence and Ariana both have positive associations of magic (Ariana with her family, Credence with GrindelGraves) while having a great fear associated with it (Ariana’s attack by the muggle boys, Credence’s adoptive mother beating him) and a clear preference for one sibling over another (Aberforth, for Ariana, and Modesty for Credence) and their magical explosions accidentally killed someone they cared for (Kendra Dumbledore and Chastity Barebone).
--- Obscurus, what are they in relation to Obscurials?
As an Obscurus is NOT a magical creature, and instead is a parasitic manifestation of magic, they’re unique to the person they’re formed from.
I’m pretty positive that they’re the actual separation of magic from the magical person. They’re the negative manifestation of their magic, destructive and influenced by the subconscious thoughts of the person they’re attached to.
- This tenuous connection of thought between the Obscurus and Obscurial had some attendees ask if, maybe, an Obscurus is kind of like an accidental Horcrux, but without a container it can’t exist for very long. Which would explain the historical reports of Obscurus appearing, causing a lot of damage, and disappearing. It would also kind of explain the near-compulsion Kowalski had when he saw it in the trunk to approach it.
- This connection also bring into question- does an Obscurus who, for lack of a better word, consumes their Obscurial consume the body as well? I think that, if it’s a purposeful giving over to the emotional overload, the Obscurus will use all the energy available to them- including their life and the bits holding their body together. But I also feel like an Obscurus gets to the point of being able to take over the Obscurial, just overwhelming them without their agreement or relinquishment of what little control they have, that the Obscurial dies as a result of the SHOCK of their magic completely separating from their body.
Can an Obscurus exist without their Obscurial? I don’t think they can take action, or exist for very long. I think that an Obscurus, as a manifestation of subconscious intent and repressed magic, cannot exist without a purpose. I think an Obscurus would exist for a moment, but without a target/mission would dissipate. I think the Obscurus in Newt’s trunk, if released from the stasis bubble thing, would have a moment of action before falling apart.
Can a forming Obscurus be destroyed/reintegrated with their Obscurial? I think that an Obscurial, early in the stages of developing an Obscurus, could halt and likely even reverse the process by no longer repressing their magic. An acceptance of their magic could likely stop an Obscurus from forming because it wouldn’t be repressed, and the person in question would no longer have strong negative emotions associated with their magic either.
Can Credence control his Obscurus? I think his ability to do so is going to rely a lot on his bloodline, probably. I also think that, in order for him to even begin to do such a thing he’s going to have to confront and accept his past. Not forgive, but accept that it happened to him and learn from it and build from it. I think Credence’s story is going to be about accepting and recovering from horrible trauma, and that the things that mark you as a target aren’t necessarily negative things. Credence’s story is going to be about acceptance and growth past trauma and fear, and the things you can build from it.
BUT NOW THAT WE’VE COVERED THESE THINGS I HAVE A THEORY FOR YOU!
We have many examples of light and dark magic in the series, and the differences between. We know that dark magic is destructive and light magic is mostly passive.
I’m going to claim here that an Obscurus is the opposite of a Patronus- or, rather, that they’re flip sides of the same coin. Magical protectors inherently tied to one magical person in particular.
- Both Obscurus and Patronus are powered by intense emotion- an Obscurus by fear and a Patronus by happy memories. Both are protective, though in different ways- a Patronus is a shield, where an Obscurus would be a sword.
- An Obscurus is destructive, seemingly only in relation to something negative happening to their Obscurial (Henry Shaw, Mary-Lou) where a Patronus is inherently passive in their protection, not destroying anything but instead pushing at any dark force until it is a safe distance away from their caster.
- An Obscurus is seemingly directed by subconscious intent, the longings that go unspoken and unacknowledged/repressed. A Patronus is directed by conscious intent, it has to be purposefully summoned and directed by the caster.
- A fully formed Patronus is a beacon of light displaying the caster’s soul, where a fully formed Obscurus is literally hiding the caster as fully as it can in smoke.
This theory then brings up a whole new kind of conversation, if we run with it.
If someone used a Patronus against an Obscurus, what would happen? I’m of the opinion that it would entirely depend upon the strength of the Obscurus and the caster of the patronus involved. I don’t think an Obscurus would EVER be destroyed by a Patronus, but I think a powerful enough Patronus could probably CONTAIN an Obscurus. Bring the Obscurial back to the forefront and thus get them into person-form again. Like, if you think about it in terms of an Obscurus being depression/ptsd and a Patronus being happiness and acceptance, the fact that they’re two different people would be like a depressive person surrounded by positive people. It doesn’t make it any better, but it does make those burdens easier to bear. At least in my experience it does. So an Obscurus being surrounded by the very personification of their happiness would probably cause an Obscurial to become more aware of what’s going on in that moment. Someone else’s good fortune won’t solve your problems, but it can remind you of the moments of light, if that makes sense.
If it’s a weak Obscurus against a strong Patronus, it could likely help the Obscurial accept their magic and such, if it’s the other way around then I’d expect no affect.
Is the bubble holding the Obscurus in Newt’s trunk made from Patronus energy, then? Well, it certainly looks it to me. The same silvery smoke that is a Patronus before the caster has enough power/memory to give it form. Or the control to choose not to do so. But we certainly don’t know for sure.
On that note, though, I’m going to open the floor- who wants to jump in?
Comments, questions, concerns?
LET’S TALK!

Appradab exclusive: Four families connected by pain are hoping to use their influence to get out the vote
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/appradab-exclusive-four-families-connected-by-pain-are-hoping-to-use-their-influence-to-get-out-the-vote/
Appradab exclusive: Four families connected by pain are hoping to use their influence to get out the vote
Whether the candidates on the ballot were running for president or local office, Breonna made sure to exercise her constitutional right, Austin said.
So when Austin encounters people who aren’t enthusiastic about either presidential candidate in the upcoming election, she reminds them about her niece.
“Please, if you don’t have a candidate in mind, just vote because Breonna can’t vote,” she said.
Just days before Election Day, the families of Taylor, George Floyd, Jacob Blake, and Alvin Cole are joining forces at a rally in Chicago on Thursday in an effort to encourage people to vote. Their message is clear: Lasting change won’t come just by marching in the streets — people must also cast their ballots.
For Black Americans, the stakes in this election are especially high, say the families whose lives have been forever altered by police violence.
The election comes on the heels of a pandemic that has killed more than 227,000 Americans, disproportionately affecting Black people at every turn. It follows a global uprising over the shootings of Black people at the hands of police that prompted a reckoning with systemic racism not seen in previous years. And it could determine whether or not there are any meaningful national reforms to address those inequalities.
“We need to get somebody in office that’s going to work on our behalf,” Austin said.
The future is on the ballot
Taylor’s killing already has resulted in some policing reforms in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
As part of a $12 million settlement with her family, the city agreed to implement establish housing incentives for officers to live in the areas they serve, have social workers provide support on certain police runs and require commanders to review and approve search warrants before seeking judicial approval, among other changes. It also passed a law banning no-knock warrants, along with several other cities.
But given a grand jury’s decision not to indict any officers in connection with her death, the family isn’t standing down any time soon.
“Until she gets justice, I’m going to continue to be a voice for her,” Austin said.
This month, the family launched the Breonna Taylor Foundation to keep her legacy alive and give back to the community. One of the foundation’s first initiatives has been picking up voters from neighborhoods around Louisville and offering them free rides to polling sites.
“Our future is at stake at this point,” Austin said. “People need to realize in order for us to move forward, we need to get out here and vote.”
Black voters are already fired up and turning out to vote in much higher rates than they did four years ago. It’s a dynamic that Austin said she’s seen in Louisville too — most of the people she’s encountered have already voted early or mailed in their absentee ballots.
“A lot of people are just sick and tired,” she added.
Even though enthusiasm is already high, Taylor’s family no plans of slowing down their voter mobilization efforts as Election Day approaches.
Tamika Palmer, Taylor’s mother, is representing the family at Thursday’s rally in Chicago. Meanwhile, Austin will be out in Louisville with other members of the Breonna Taylor Foundation, escorting people to polling sites and making sure they’re filling out their ballots correctly.
Two brothers find that people are listening
Philonise and Rodney Floyd have also been at the forefront of advocating for change.
Since their older brother died in May in Minneapolis with a police officer’s knee pressed into his neck, Philonise Floyd has pleaded with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to pass key policing reforms. Both have lent their voices in racial justice rallies across the nation.
Lately, the younger Floyd brothers have been showing up to different polling sites in Houston — Floyd’s hometown — passing out potato chips and water bottles to voters and cheering up kids who are waiting in lines with their parents.
When people recognize them as the brothers of George Floyd — whose killing has been a catalyst for the change seen in police departments across the nation — they’re anxious to talk about what’s on their minds, Philonise Floyd said.
It’s been heartening to see how the tragedy that befell their brother is driving so many people to the polls, Philonise Floyd added. But sometimes the two brothers encounter residents in their communities that don’t believe their votes will make a difference.
Their message to those people: Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.
Philonise and Rodney Floyd said they’ve taken to framing what’s at stake in this election in terms that make sense to some of the skeptics they encounter: healthcare, income taxes and government assistance. And because of the platform they now have, they find that they’re able to get through to people.
“Ever since this stuff has happened to my brother, everywhere I go people just stop and they just listen,” Philonise Floyd said.
A father is carrying on a family legacy
Jacob Blake, 29, has left the hospital since getting shot several times in August by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Though the younger Blake is now dealing with constant pain, he’s doing “as well as to be expected by a young man who’s been shot in the back seven times,” Blake’s father Jacob Blake Sr. said.
Despite everything he and his family have endured over the last few months, Blake Sr. is invigorated.
“If we speak with one big voice that is unified, people have to listen,” he said.
Because to change laws and challenge the conditions created by centuries of systemic racism, he added, they need votes.
Now Blake Sr. finds himself in a position of influence and leadership on issues of racial justice — a role that’s not entirely unfamiliar.
The Rev. Jacob Blake Sr., his father and the junior Blake’s grandfather, led the fight for fair housing in Evanston throughout the 1960s and ’70s, organizing marches after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that eventually led city council members to ban racial discrimination in housing.
So while the circumstances are painful, Blake Sr. feels equipped to meet this moment.
“It sits on like a fur-lined slipper,” he said of his new role. “I’m comfortable, and I know what I have to do.”
His father instilled in him a fearless attitude and a determination to fight for his people, Blake Sr. said. And in the coming days, he’s using his platform to turn out the vote.
“I can challenge the system,” Blake Sr. said. “The system has been broken for over 400 years. It’s never included us wholeheartedly. So that makes it easy for me to keep going.”
A mother wants change for the next generation
The changes that are being fought for in the streets and at the ballot box will ultimately have come too late for the families of police violence victims.
That includes the family of Alvin Cole, a 17-year-old who was shot and killed in February by police in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
But what has transpired since has made his mother Tracy Cole even more determined to make sure that those changes are realized — starting with voting for the candidate she thinks will listen to the concerns of African Americans.
Earlier this month, a prosecutor announced that an officer involved in Cole’s death would not face criminal charges. In the protests that followed, Tracy Cole and her daughters were arrested — and Tracy Cole’s lawyer alleges that the incident left her injured.
“We do not see justice,” she said. “It’s a constant thing in our community when it comes to police killing our kids or our loved ones. Something needs to be changed. Police should be accountable for what they do to us. It’s just like there’s nothing happening.”
By voting to make a change in the country’s leadership, Cole said she’s standing up not only for grieving mothers like herself, but all the families who could encounter a similar fate to hers.
When she casts her ballot, Cole said she’ll be thinking about her son Alvin, whose right to vote was lost when his life was cut short. But in the end, the fight today is about making a difference for future generations.

47 Reasons Why I Fear Islam - (Reason 28)
-28-Yes, moderate Muslims can be productive members of Western society; but only if they are “Bad Muslims” according to their own religion, or if they are “deep-cover agents” playing a “long-range” or “sleeper” game for the eventual destruction of non-Islamic forces. ++++------- http://www.amazon.com/Into-Infidels-Lynn-Editor-Copeland/dp/0882643452/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1380152447&sr=1-2&keywords=INTO+THE+DEN+OF+INFIDELS In the book INTO THE DEN OF INFIDELS Edited by Lynn Copeland is the story of Leila, who as a child, hears about this wonderful person going around doing good. Gabriel, Ph.D. argues that whenever a Muslim in the media says that Islam is a religion of peace, that this statement is: A) Wishful Thinking. S/He sincerely believes s/he can explain away the unpalatable parts of the Koran. (@hg47 – or s/he takes the orthodox long view that once Islam conquers the entire world by war that peace will reign, and that therefore, Islam is a religion of peace because the ultimate result will be peace, regardless of how many billions of Infidels have to be murdered to accomplish this. Spencer argues that this is more evidence of Islamic supremacism. Many Muslims believe that they may disregard American laws if these laws conflict with Islamic teachings. (Muslim ghettos are ruled internally by Sharia law where women are property which may be beaten and/or raped at will by their owners.) @hg47 says – Here in the States, we have our own home-grown pliggys. The Mormons. Several years ago, best estimates gave the Muslims at least double the number of secret plural marriages as Mormons. I’m willing to bet that Muslims are now 3-5 times the Mormons in active secret practicing polygamists in the good old USA. (I have linked to it many times in this book, on the theory that readers who just drill down to follow points on Islam that hold a personal interest to them may find the link on one of their few drill downs.) One key point is that Muslim ghettos governed internally by Sharia law in violation of the laws of the host nations are creating internal invisible borders within Western nations which are growing in size and numbers, and which regard this territory as holy Islamic land which may never be taken from Muslims under threat of jihad and holy war, just as Muslims will forever attempt to retake the territory of Israel. ++++------- tweet ~ I am suspicious of any religion whose holy books are statistically more Anti-Semitic than Hitler’s MEIN KAMPF. ++++------- http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/hate-trial-for-farright-politician-geert-wilders-2097090.html This article is on the Wilders hate trial. Prosecutors argued that Wilders was inciting hate against Muslims. Wilders argued that he was telling it like it is. As a result, Dutch voters are rethinking their religious tolerance because of immigrants who may be taking advantage of the Dutch system. ++++------- A quote from Saudi imam Sheikh Muhammad Saleh sl-Munajjid: “This is the greatest benefit of the situation: educating the children to jihad and to hatred of the Jews, the Christians, and the infidels.” Educating your children to war? Educating your children to hate Jews? Educating your children to hate Christians? And Muslims consider this a proper education?? ++++------- http://www.prisonplanet.com/did-911-really-change-everything.html This article is a piece of work. Did 9/11 really change everything? Or was it simply an excuse to implement existing plans? @hg47 says – Conspiracy buffs should check out the above link. Sadly, I actually agree with much of it. Personally, and this is just me, I think Cheney was the real boss, and (lightweight) Bush was his front-man, subtly controlled by flattery, repeated suggestions, and appeals to “the right thing to do.” My take? After 9/11 there was a HUGE We-Need-To-Kick-Some-Muslim-Ass impulse in American culture; the Pearl Harbor syndrome. Unfortunately, there was no logical target, and we did not want to attack Saudi Arabia. However, a case could be manufactured against Iraq, long a desired area to do something about. Just as Muslim preachers use pretext to fire up a Muslim mob during sermon and aim the mob at a detested Infidel target, I believe the United States used pretext to attack Iraq, claiming “Weapons Of Mass Destruction.” In my view, Colin Powell was the sanest man in all of this. He repeatedly argued against attacking Iraq. Ultimately, though, as a former soldier and former General, Colin Powell saluted his Commander-In-Chief and followed orders (destroying his own reputation when no WMDs were found, after Powell’s persuasive voice to the world). Whether Cheney really thought there were WMDs in Iraq, or whether he gave orders to fabricate the evidence, I don’t know. But Cheney got Bush fired-up, and Bush got Blair fired-up, and a Coalition was born. In my opinion. Go, USA! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +Go-To-29+ +Go-To-Beginning-Of-47-REASONS-WHY-I-FEAR-ISLAM+

FAMILY ANNIHILATOR: BAD DADS
Familicide:
When the whole family is obliterated, usually in a single act, by a member of that family.
Cases of fathers deliberately killing their wife and children is both shocking and increasing in frequency. An overwhelming 70% of all family massacres are carried out by men.
Generally speaking, the act represents a last attempt to display a masculine role over the family. I’m the father, so I decide!
It has also been suggested that it’s a man’s general attitude to women and their reproductive nature.
Let’s see if we can understand a teeny bit of a very complicated and multifactorial crime.
COMMON CHARACTERISTICS
More likely than a woman to kill themselves afterwards.
Usually successful men in their 30s, ranging from surgeons, executives and engineers.
Will spend days, sometimes weeks planning and fantasizing down to the smallest detail.
Murders mostly occur in the family home.
Younger children are often murdered with a 'personal weapon’ using their hands; strangulation or stabbing.
Older children are usually shot.
Feel like their masculinity is being taken away.
Sundays and the month of August are popular choices for fathers who pulverize.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILES
WHY DAD LOST HIS SHIT
FAMILY BREAK UP
Family disintegration is the #1 factor behind fathers who kill their own family, making divorce and separation a risky period for any potential household bloodshed.
UNDER PRESSURE
Even if a family is intact, other influences are overwhelming the individual with life duties to the extent they see death as the only way to alleviate the pressure. Examples are health issues and financial ruin.
SELF RIGHTEOUS
These type of killers are proud of what they have done and want to share details with others. Convinced they are justified in some sick manner, this killer is known to call remaining family members or local media to make special announcements. More recently, they are posting their deeds on Facebook.
DISAPPOINTED
This killer holds the mindset that his family let him down or he is unable to achieve his vision of ideal family life.
ANOMIC
This family is socially disorganized. Alienated from family and support systems due to a move, loss of job or being generally secluded from others.
PARANOID
Those who envision an external threat to the family. This could be social services, the legal system or another family member which creates a twisted desire to protect the family from outside ‘forces’.
MENTAL ILLNESS
People who commit spontaneous domestic homicides, are more often mentally ill or had a history of mental illness.
JOEL SMITH
Murdered: (4) Wife and three children. Ages 12,7,4
Date: July 12th, 2014
Location: Saco, Maine
Manner of death: Shooting
The Smith family spent that last Saturday night having a BBQ outside their apartment complex and chatting with neighbors. Described as looking calm and relaxed, the Smiths went inside their home around 9 pm.
Just a few hours later, Joel shot his wife and three children with a shot gun, before killing himself. Having recently moved from Arizona, Joel became despondent and depressed as the family struggled financially and a wife with substance abuse issues.
Besides a previous suicide attempt, there was no history of abuse or noticeable signs of violence leading up to the slayings.
ERVIN LUPOE
Murdered: (6) Wife and 5 children, including two sets of twins. Ages 8, 5 and 2
Date: January 27th 2009
Location: Wilmington, CA
Manner of death: Shooting
Things started to unravel for the Lupoe Family when both parents were fired, simultaneously, from their job at the local hospital where they worked together as X-ray technicians.
A few days after the loss of their jobs, he killed his wife and children in their upscale home with a revolver and spent the night with their corpses.
The next day, Ervin calmly called the local news station to report the crimes and let them know he was sending over a fax: his suicide note. He shot himself while the cops were en route.
In the note, Ervin explained that he and his wife were being investigated for misrepresenting their employment to an outside agency to obtain child care. With 5 young children, he felt their financial situation was hopeless.
Further in the letter, Ervin even attempted to claim his wife Ana was responsible planning and demise of their family. As for the kids...
"Why leave our children in someone else's hands?"
FERNANDO MANRIQUE
Murdered: (4) Wife and two children age 10 and 11
Date: October 16, 2016
Location: Near Sydney, Australia
Manner of death: Carbon Monoxide
Neighbors couldn't figure out what the hell Mr. Manrique was doing on his roof that last Saturday.
"He was up there replacing tiles, using power tools...Cutting and making all sorts of noise...."
Mr. Manrique was not replacing roof tiles, but something a little more sinister. He spent his last day alive installing an elaborate pump system to fill his house with carbon monoxide in order to kill his wife and two special needs children.
Because running-cars-in-garages is so cliche, Mr. Fancy Pants Engineer spent months designing the mechanism. In Mr. Manrique’s mind, gassing his family while they slept seemed like a reasonable solution to an upcoming divorce.
DANIEL LYNAM
Murdered: (7) His parents, his wife and two children, age 2 years and 5 weeks, and her parents
Date: July 11-12, 1987
Location: Tacoma, WA
Manner of death: Shooting
Over the course of a weekend, Daniel methodically killed several members of his family leaving behind three grisly crime scenes in his wake.
After killing his own parents at their house for whatever reason, he drove over to his wife's parents house, about three miles away, shooting them all in the head. Eventually, he drove back to his own house killing his wife and two kids in the same manner.
Police received an anonymous tip the following day from a man who said his brother had killed people and directed them to the house on Federal Way.
When the cops came, Daniel was polite enough to warn them to stay outside so he wouldn't have to kill them too. Ten minutes later, deputies heard a gunshot.
Daniel had a history of mental illness, but he didn’t leave a note of explanation nor was there any apparent motive for him to kill the majority of his extended family.
DR. ANTHONY PAUL
Murdered: (3): His wife and two children age 17 and 12
Date: July 18, 1990
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Manner of death: Sedatives
"We lived together, we loved together, we die together''
Highly regarded in the medical field as a specialist in gastro-intestinal cancers at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, none of his colleagues could imagine the horrific development Dr. Paul was planning.
Caring for his severely disabled daughter and a wife who suffered from chronic arthritis, Dr. Paul was distraught with the ongoing health issues and the inevitable financial stress. The middle aged doctor was convinced there was no other alternative than to kill everyone.
Dr. Paul left work early on a Friday afternoon, casually mentioning an envelope he left on his desk. Open it on Monday, he said.
As they read his suicide note that following Monday, his co-workers came to the shocking conclusion that there a house full of dead people they should probably do something about.
Inside their 10-bedroom estate, investigators found the family in the master bedroom. Each person was found holding their own empty IV bag.
His suicide note detailed the reasons for his actions and even though his son was healthy, Dr. Paul did not want his only son to grow up in foster care and become an "outcast".
Mark Short Sr.
Murdered: (4) Wife and three children, aged 8, 5 and one year
Date: August 6, 2016
Location: Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania
Manner of death: Shooting
The Short family had been featured several times in the local media as they documented their struggles to care for their youngest child, who received a heart transplant when she was just a few days old.
A shining example of perseverance and being strong in difficult times.
Privately however, the couple were not getting along. Soon after one altercation ended with the cops being called, his wife Megan decided it was time to get a divorce and started making plans to move out.
The day before the murders, Mark took his three small children to Hershey's theme park while Megan announced on Facebook that she was leaving her husband and needed help moving into her new apartment the next day. She never made it.
Her family became concerned when she didn’t show up on moving day with her belongings and called authorities.
Investigators found the whole family dead in the living room dressed in their pajamas with blankets spread out as though they were having a slumber party. Everyone, including the 1 year-old heart recipient and a family dog, were shot with a .38 caliber pistol.
Short left a note describing his emotional turmoil over the loss of his family.
