🎨🦋A Welcome Home fan fic🌸🐛
Summary: Wally wants to hang out with his friends on a warm summer day, but he worries over picking the pilings off his fleece skin
Word count: 1,396 words
Characters involved: Wally Darling, Home, Julie Joyful, Frank Frankly, Howdy Pillar
Contents:
Dermatillomania (portrayed via fabric piling and cotton)
Fluff :D
Helping friends
Compulsions
Additional art at end jumpscare lol
Notes: This is my first time putting one of my fan fictions actually out in the world sooo any constructive criticism is appreciated. This is somewhat based on my own experiences with dermatillomania, and honestly I just kind of wanted some kind of outlet to share how I feel about it sometimes :,D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wally had woken up a little bit later than usual, but nothing would deter from the smiling summer day that the neighborhood had today. Home opened up one of its windows to let Wally have a nice breath of the morning summer air, and a small wave of heat rushed inside as Wally happily sighed. Crossing his arms over the windowsill, he felt something on his arm that had been unconsciously bothering him for months now. It seemed to have been piling from his fleece skin coming up again for Wally. It didn’t seem to bother Wally for the time being though, but Home was always concerned over Wally picking at the pilings. The piling picking would sometimes go to the point Wally would pick too hard and bits of his cotton insides would peek out.
Home warned through the creaking doors and floorboards for Wally to not pick at his arm this time around if he wanted to go outside with short sleeves today. Home also warned that he would dig too deep into his skin again and ruin his arm; “it’s done enough scarring to your beautiful skin already, Wally” Home creaked, pointing to the very tiny seams Home had to patch for him. Wally didn’t seem to fond of the idea of wearing his cardigan on an already warm day, but he didn’t seem fond of picking at his skin either, so he decided to wear his cardigan over a shorter sleeved white button up. Wally was going out to Howdy’s Place with Julie and Frank for smoothies and milkshakes, so Wally was more than eager to go outside and play.
After showering and preparing his hair, Wally was all dolled up to go and hang out with his friends. Wally stepped outside and waved goodbye to Home before going on his merry way. Although there was a nice breeze every now and then, the summer heat made Wally feel like he’d turn into butter if he didn’t find anything to cool him down. As Wally made his way to Howdy’s Place, he decided the cardigan was too much for him, and wrapped the cardigan around his waist. The summers heat felt so much better on Wally now that he didn’t have his wooly blue cardigan to retain heat.
The bell inside Howdy’s Place’s door gave a nice ring, and Wally stepped inside to see his friends waiting for him. Wally sighed and wiped the droplets of sweat off his forehead before sitting next to Julie. The three got Neapolitan milkshakes, but separate. Wally got a simple strawberry milkshake, Julie got a double chocolate milkshake, and Frank got a plain vanilla milkshake. Julie paid for the trio’s drinks, and thank the stars that Barnaby’s joke lessons are working out finally for her. After Howdy and the trio had quite the laugh from Julie’s jokes, Wally, Frank, and Julie happily enjoyed their milkshakes. While Julie yapped on and on to Frank about her summer plans, Wally once again crossed his arms as he happily enjoyed his milkshake. Whether he was aware of it or not, Wally felt the pilings on his arm again, and started to pick at it.
It didn’t hurt, but at the same time it did. It felt as if Wally was pricking his arm with a somewhat dull sewing needle all over his arm. He wasn’t doing much else while his friends talked and Howdy managed the store, but his focus was still on drinking his milkshake, so why was he picking at his skin? Perhaps it’s a need for perfection. How else was he going to get his arm smooth again from the piling? Wally didn’t feel exactly bad for doing it, but at the same time he did.
“Wally, are you doing alright there?” Frank asked as he looked over to Wally. Blinking from his state of thought, Wally looked back over to Julie and Frank. “Oh, yes! I am doing well.” Wally exclaimed monotonously. Wally uncrossed his arms, but still held onto his one arm that had all the piling, rubbing his thumb against it all. Julie tilted her head to side to take a look, and took note of how Wally rubbing his thumb against his arm. “Is your arm ok Wally? Can I see?” Julie asked curiously. Wally looked to the side in thought, and considering he can’t exactly hide his arm now that Julie’s curious about it. Julie holds her hand out kindly to Wally, and Wally allows Julie to see his arm, continuing to look away reluctantly.
Julie took a closer look at the pilings in an odd sense of curiosity. It seems like rainbow monsters like Julie haven’t been through anything like this before. Frank looked over from where he sat as Wally took back his arm to go back to his milkshake.
“You don’t have to be ashamed of it Wally.” Frank comforted to Wally. Wally looked back up from his milkshake to look at Frank, surprised at the words they had to say. “It’s something that’s compulsive to you, right?”
“Compulsive?” Wally asked as he tilted his head in question.
“Something you tend to do on repeat, regardless of how often you try to control it.” Frank explained calmly.
Wally understanding what the word meant now, he nodded his head a bit sadly, knowing what Frank described fits to Wally’s picking. “Hm…Well, you don’t have to feel sad about it!” Julie exclaimed to Wally.
“I don’t?” Wally asked.
“Not at all! If all that describes something compulsive, then that should mean that Frank and I’s flappy hands are compulsive too!” Julie said excitedly.
Wally and Frank laughed to Julie’s enthusiasm. “Well, you aren’t wrong in that sense Julie, no. Though it’s different to what Wally’s compulsions are, that being his skin picking.” Julie looks to Wally’s arm, then back to Wally.
“Does itttt..hurt whenever you pick at your skin Wally?” Julie asked curiously.
Wally shook his head no.
“It hurts, yes, but it only feels like a pinch every time.” Wally explains in his usual monotonous tone.
Julie tries to get an idea after learning this new information, and spins around on the barstool seat while sipping her milkshake. Glancing at the rack of sticker sheets Howdy has in his shop, the lightbulb flickers in her head with an idea. She quickly got down from her chair, grabbed a sticker pack, and went back to her seat.
“Hey Howdy! How much for the stickers?” Julie asked as she waved the sticker pack in the air.
“One joke per pack, Jules!” Howdy answered.
“….Well, whatdya call a sticker that’s always late?” Julie asked Howdy.
“Hmm, I dunno Jules, what do you call a sticker that’s always late?” Howdy questioned back.
“Stick around! It’ll show up eventually.” Julie answered.
Although it took a couple of seconds for Howdy and Frank to catch on, it was a holler and a half once they got the joke (Wally laughed, but he didn’t quite understand). Howdy wipes a tear from his eye from the laugh and settles down. “Oh boy, alright you won this one Julie. Now, whatdya need those stickers for anyway?” Howdy asked a bit puzzled.
Julie demonstrated by putting a sticker on her face, and slowly peeling it off. “I think that since there’s a little itty bitty bite of hurt whenever Wally picks at his skin, Wally can put these stickers on his arm! That way when he tries to pick at his skin, it won’t hurt as much!” Julie prompted. Wally and Howdy were bedazzled by the idea of using stickers on Wally’s arm to pick at rather than his own skin. “The peeling of the stickers could give the same stimulation Wally gets from digging into his skin to get the pilings off of him! Not a bad idea Julie.” Frank admitted.
Julie gave a little flappy hands to Frank’s approval of the idea, and turned to Wally for a true test of approval.
“What do you think Wally? Does it sound good to you?” Julie asked excitedly.
“That idea sounds like the absolute most! I think we should try it!” Wally said as he gave a happy nod in yes.
Julie jumped in joy as Wally said yes to her idea, and Julie, Frank, and Howdy all helped to cover Wally in as many stickers as he wanted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ll probably draw some art of the ending too where Howdy, Julie and Frank are putting stickers all over Wally :3

Seele's attire. Alright, as much as I don't like going 'screw it' at canonical attire 'cause I'm (mocking voice:) 'canon strict' and all that, I do want to elaborate on the kind of diversity you'd find her wearing. Because just like how she likely got a Silvermane Guard rifle refashioned into her trademark melee weapon, the scythe, I think that Seele is very much someone who makes the best out of anything she can find. After all, she lived on the streets for a very long time, and in a way still does.
When quite young, and well into her teenage years, Seele would have worn the same things for as long as they were no longer usable, and usually that would mean when they got ruined in one way or another, which usually was because they got very torn up (a reminder that she was homeless for numerous of her very young years, 'dirty' wouldn't have been a reason to discard anything). As she aged a little bit, she would literally take a discarded shirt or pair of pants that she would find in the streets, and fashion it into something wearable. As a kid, this meant, for instance, gathering the oversized bulk of a shirt, and tying it into a knot at her back or side— and as a teenager, it meant tearing away what was impractical, or cutting the legs off a pair of jeans, or rolling them up so it was more cuffed. 'Style' didn't matter, it was all about surviving the cold, and then as she got more versed in combat (and became part of Wildfire), it also had to be practical. Because she stays so very active, but also due to having spent so much time outside as she grew up before she ever 'became part of' the Underworld's orphanage (quotation marks used, because nothing indicates that she ever stayed in it, whether by her own choice or otherwise), she has acclimated more to the cold than others. This is why she will more commonly be found in shorts, with mismatched high socks, legwarmers, or even tights, along with t-shirts (sleeves rolled up, and kept rolled up during intense activity with hair-ties, or bits of rope/string wrapped around) or sleeveless tops that will be complimented with gloves or arm-warmers. In adulthood, Seele has only become more practical, and does actively choose to wear things that keep her warm, but it's mainly due to the fabrics of the clothing that she wears, choosing things that absorb and retain body heat that comes from her highly active lifestyle. From afar, it might not dawn on people that these items of clothing actually do that for her, but if you look closer— you'll notice that a lot of her outfits consist of nylon, fleece, and cotton flannel. Not ideal, but they get the job done decently well. As for when she's 'home', you'll find her putting on random old hoodies, or oversized sweaters, cardigans, flannels, and she'd throw them over whatever she's already wearing, colors or matching don't matter. Seele personifies the 'mix and match' concept, though not out of preference, but simply because she'll wear whatever's most practical. As for shoes? Most appear to be combat boots, usually without heel, but she'll also wear sneakers, or whatever she gets her hands on when her previous pair of shoes got ruined. She'll wear something beyond the last inch of its life and then some.
But most importantly, and the only thing that's fundamental to her: is that she will always have, in one way or another, the scarf that Oleg gave her (or once it inevitably got torn and ruined, one to replace it), the one that marks her place in Wildfire. Not to show-off, but so that people can see that they're there, always, and that they'll never stop fighting to make the Underworld a better place. No matter what she wears, it'll either be around her wrist, or arm, or neck, or tied to a belt. It'll be somewhere on her. Always.
"Wear this red scarf, and then we shall share each other's pain." "We are family. We are Wildfire."
#[ seele. ] we tell them 'things will be better tomorrow.' everyone knows it's a lie; but it gets them to sleep with some hope.#[ seele: meta. ] she got used to people losing their homes. and she got used to people losing their lives. but crying alone was useless.

Happy NYE/NY everyone!
Because 'tis the season for reflection, I went through my camera roll and picked out the 9 projects from this year that I'm proudest of.
(We all know what posts from this year got the most online attention, but I think it's important to be introspective and think about what projects and posts were actually most valuable to me. Anyways. /soapbox)
Swan Song Scarf (Jasmine Lin, Crafty Coola). This is my design, and although I released it a good while ago, I'm still incredibly proud of it. I spent a lot of time sketching, charting, knitting, ripping back... it was a labor of love, but I'm proud that I stuck with it and got a result I'm happy with. Yarn: Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply (World in a Book and Light Clematis)
Woodland Cardigan (Anna Johanna, Where We Once Knitted). This was my first time steeking, and yeah, I'm pretty gosh-darned proud of that. Yarn: Knit Picks Palette (Wonderland Heather and Calypso Heather)
Anza Dress (Kennis Wong, Itch to Stitch). This was my first time installing buttons, making (sewn) buttonholes, using interfacing (...don't judge me), and sewing scoop pockets. So many new techniques for me, but it created such a polished product and was an excellent learning opportunity. I'm so glad I took the leap with this pattern. Fabric: Singer Brand Cotton Poplin (2 yards)
Color Triangle (p: do you love the color of the sky?). This was my first time using powdered acid dye (read: Big Girl Dye instead of tie-dye/Rit/food coloring)! Obviously the whole color-formulating process for the Color of the Sky shenanigans remains in progress, but I'm proud of this triangle as it is anyways. Fiber: Knit Picks Stroll Bare, Dye: G&S Acid Dyes
Custom Intarsia Blanket. This depicts DNA replication using restriction enzymes and DNA ligase. I did this one for a custom commission, and I'm proud of myself for a) designing it, b) being so free with it, and c) getting to make something science-y! I sketched a rough plan before beginning, but I had to make an absurd amount of adjustments along the way -- in the end, I even had to duplicate stitch over the restriction enzyme bit with a half-strand (i.e. half the plies) of yarn since the stash yarn was too fine. I'm so used to planning everything and then being stubborn; this was a great exercise in adaptability and letting go.
Elderberry Dress (Shavonne Cruz, Mood Sewciety). I'm not one to do muslins or even much fitting on my sewing projects. I tend to just take patterns straight out of the envelope and then sew them, consequences be damned. This dress, though? After each wear, I've been making little adjustments to improve it; shaping the neckline and adjusting the fit, amongst other things. That's something I want to carry forward for my future projects.
Eliane Scrubs (Jalie). These aren't anything particularly special from a technical perspective, but they are possibly my most-worn me-made EVER. They've held up to weekly wear and washing and I'm proud of them for that, as well as of myself for letting my babies "do their job" instead of hiding them way out of fear. Fabric: cotton poplin
Fractal Yarn (p: swirling solar winds). I spun most of this for Tour de Fleece (which feels like a lifetime ago!) and it's a huge accomplishment for me. I'm often afraid to break down gradient braids, so doing a fractal spin was a first for me! I also got it nice and fine; a practical weight for what I usually work with. Fiber: Emily C Gillies (now House of Wool) Luck of the Draw December 2022 on Merino/Silk
Handspun Sweater (p: we pull apart the stars). Ok, so this isn't finished, but handspun sweater. I think that speaks for itself as far as why I'm proud!

Interweave Knits, Spring 2023
This Café Collection offers 3 pullovers, 2 cardigans, a poncho, 2 wraps, a scarf, and fingerless mitts in both lighter weight yarns and some wool ones too, a mix that fits spring. The cover offers the Caturra Top by Rachel Brockman, which features a cable and lace panel running up the front, and then textured sleeves. It is a 2 out of 4 for difficulty and comes in the Universal Yarn’s Truva which is a blend of cashmere and cotton.
The Robusta Scarf by Kimberly Kalnocki is the perfect project if you would like to show off a color contrast with brioche stitch. This one is done in two shades of Berrocco’s Modern Cotton which is actually half modal rayon. It is a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. The brioche bind-off article is a bit disappointing as it explains which serve what purpose, so how to choose one, but does not actually explain the techniques themselves. For which you have to head for your knitting reference book.
Cascara Sweater has an all over blend of cables and brioche stitch and is a bit harder, showing up as a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. Evelyn Siatra designed it in Drops’ Nord yarn, an alpaca/wool/acrylic blend. Cortado Pullover is also a 3 out of 4 and offers a v-neckline echoed all down the front via a center lace panel and then appears on the sleeves. Therese Chynoweth designed it in Universal Yarn’s Deluxe DK Tweed Superwash which is a mostly wool blend.
Also a 3 out of 4 is Affogato is a long cardigan with patch pockets which buttons shut and has a large ribbed collar. It has a medley of cabling all over and is made in Harrisville Design’s Daylight which is a wool yarn made up mostly of Cormo fleece.

I just said some of this in the comments but you cannot assume that all fashion brands which ensure fair/living wages and decent treatment of factory workers are selling $180 t-shirts or whatever all of the time, and so therefore you "can't afford to buy more ethical products."
Op touched on some of this too, but like:
Step one: reduce consumption.
Also repair what you already own and like! Mend it, spend a little money to get it tailored, etc. Reuse what you can.
The thrift/secondhand clothes market is absolutely flooded with clothing because the fashion industry overproduces SO MUCH at such high volumes. There is more clothing than thrift/consignment stores can possibly ever sell. It's also easier than ever to find decent quality clothing secondhand online. There's no reason to ever shop ultra fast fashion like shein or temu, because there's still nice quality stuff for under $20 or under $10 in real life and online thrift/used markets all the time.
As for slow/ethical/eco fashion and clothing companies: Yes, sometimes they sell a T-shirt for $64 or $118!
But do you know what else I have seen these companies do?:
They have a wide variety of bonus discounts people can qualify for (including literally "low income discount.")
They often have their own secondhand markets for their clothing, so you can buy their clothing used and at a discount easily!
Some of them have textile recycling programs that are either free or involve purchasing the recycling return label bag, and the items you send to be recycled then grant you a credit towards shopping. (I just got a $25 gift card to a shop this way.)
They may have mistaken overstock of a specific color or size sales! (Wow that $168 dress is now $25 because they screwed up and ordered too many.)
They significantly discount retiring prints/patterns/styles or low stock items!
They have sample, archive, or seasonal end sales at big discounts.
Hell, it's April. A lot of them are discounting things for earth month.
Like if you're at a place where you can afford target new, and you're not able to find something used for what you need, then you need to know there are more ethical, sustainable, or accountable options out there with equivalent prices when you check sales.
Guess which one(s) is/are Target Brand at full price, and which are just things on sale at companies that do offer documentation on their factories, supply chain, their fair labor/trade certifications, employee guarantees, environmental impact reports, etc etc for all the clothing made?:
V-neck tee $18
Slim fit v-neck tee $15
Billow sleeve tee $20
Mock turtleneck long sleeve tee $20
Open front cardigan $30
Babydoll romper $30
Terry side zip pullover $25
Belted tea length dress $28
Organic cotton tee $15
Ruffled column dress $37
Men's fleece hoodie $35
Men's graphic hoodie $33
Halter jumpsuit $50
Ribbed tunic sweatshirt $30
Pointelle rib cardigan $18
Long sleeve shirt dress $45
Twill pencil skirt $25
V neck peplum top $23
Yes, I did ensure to include plus size inclusive brands!
Answers below the cut:
Target brand items: 2, 4, 5, 11, 13, 14, and 16.
"crochet can't be made by machines" went from being a cool fun fact to being a call to action of "so if you see mass manufactured crochet in Target, that was made by a person and they were underpaid and you should boycott it" which is true, it was made by a person, but EVERY item of clothing you own (that you did not purchase from a company using ethical labor) was made by a person being underpaid (at *best*.)
Sewing machines are operated by *people*. Knitting machines are operated by *people*. Yes lots of the process is automated but you cannot tell a machine "make me a t-shirt" or "make me a knit cardigan".
Higher awareness of fast fashion, and the true human labor and abuse behind it, is GREAT, but let's not pretend that the crochet hat in target is THE problem. Every article of clothing in target is the problem. "All clothes are made by people" is the jumping off point here into understanding this issue it's not just crochet it's the whole thing ahhhhHHHHHHHHHH

How to Choose the Perfect Women’s Nightwear for Every Season in 2025
Finding the perfect nightwear can transform your sleep experience, offering comfort, style, and functionality throughout the year. In 2025, women’s nightwear trends prioritize breathable fabrics, thoughtful designs, and versatility to cater to the changing seasons. Whether you’re battling winter chills or enjoying summer nights, this guide will help you select the ideal nightwear for every season.
1. Spring Nightwear: Fresh and Lightweight
Spring is the season of renewal, and your nightwear should reflect that sense of freshness. Look for lightweight fabrics and vibrant designs to embrace the transitional weather.
Fabric Choices: Opt for breathable materials like cotton, bamboo, or modal. These fabrics wick moisture and keep you cool as temperatures fluctuate.
Styles to Consider: Short-sleeve pajama sets or camisole-and-shorts combos are perfect for spring. Look for floral prints, pastel shades, or playful patterns to capture the essence of the season.
Layering Options: For cooler spring evenings, choose a lightweight robe or cardigan-style wrap that you can easily remove as the night warms up.
2. Summer Nightwear: Cool and Breezy
Hot summer nights call for nightwear that prioritizes ventilation and comfort. Focus on pieces that keep you cool without compromising on style.
Fabric Choices: Lightweight fabrics like linen, rayon, or organic cotton are excellent for summer. Silk is another luxurious option, offering a smooth feel and cooling properties.
Styles to Consider: Go for sleeveless or spaghetti-strap nightgowns, loose-fit tank tops with shorts, or breezy chemises. Look for designs with open backs or breathable mesh panels for added airflow.
Color Palette: Bright hues like coral, turquoise, or white, along with tropical prints, will help you embrace the summer vibe.
Extra Features: Prioritize nightwear with moisture-wicking and quick-dry properties to stay comfortable on humid nights.
3. Autumn Nightwear: Cozy and Stylish
As temperatures begin to drop, autumn nightwear should offer warmth without being too heavy. Think cozy fabrics and transitional pieces that bridge the gap between summer and winter.
Fabric Choices: Soft materials like jersey, flannel, or brushed cotton provide a balance of warmth and breathability. Consider blends with a touch of spandex for extra stretch and comfort.
Styles to Consider: Long-sleeve pajama sets, lightweight thermal tops with leggings, or knee-length nightgowns are great options for autumn evenings. Look for earthy tones like rust, olive, or mustard to reflect the season.
Accessories: Pair your nightwear with fuzzy socks or slippers for added coziness. A knit shawl or throw blanket can also be a great companion for cooler nights.
4. Winter Nightwear: Warm and Snuggly
Winter nightwear is all about staying warm and comfortable during chilly nights. Choose pieces that provide insulation while feeling soft and cozy against your skin.
Fabric Choices: Flannel, fleece, and thermal knits are top picks for winter. If you prefer luxury, opt for cashmere or heavyweight silk blends.
Styles to Consider: Full-length pajama sets with long sleeves, onesies, or oversized nightgowns with leggings are ideal for keeping the cold at bay. Look for details like high collars, ribbed cuffs, or drawstring waists for extra warmth.
Layering Options: Add a plush robe or a faux fur-lined cardigan for an extra layer of comfort. Don’t forget insulated slippers or booties to keep your feet toasty.
Patterns and Colors: Winter-themed prints like snowflakes, plaids, or deep jewel tones like emerald and burgundy add a festive touch.
5. Year-Round Nightwear Essentials
Certain nightwear staples work well in any season and provide a foundation for your collection:
Breathable Loungewear Sets: Versatile enough for year-round use, loungewear sets made from cotton or modal are perfect for relaxing at home and transitioning into sleepwear.
Silk Nightgowns: Silk works as a natural temperature regulator, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Invest in a high-quality silk slip for timeless elegance.
Mix-and-Match Pieces: Build a nightwear wardrobe with interchangeable tops and bottoms in neutral colors to suit different seasons and moods.
6. Sustainable Nightwear Trends for 2025
Sustainability is a major focus in fashion, and nightwear is no exception. When choosing your pieces, consider brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices:
Organic Fabrics: Opt for nightwear made from organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp, which are grown without harmful chemicals.
Ethical Production: Support brands that ensure fair wages and safe working conditions for their employees.
Longevity: Choose high-quality pieces that are durable and timeless, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Conclusion
The perfect women’s nightwear for every season in 2025 is all about combining comfort, style, and functionality. By selecting fabrics and designs suited to the weather, you can ensure a restful night’s sleep while staying chic and on-trend. Don’t forget to invest in sustainable options to align with the growing demand for eco-conscious fashion. Whether it’s a breezy summer chemise or a snuggly winter onesie, your nightwear should be a reflection of both your personal style and the season’s needs.
