Week 7 ‘Lecture and Tutorial’ Reflection:

The topic of this week’s class focussed on different aspects of urban development and how it achieves greater sustainability in our cities, in particular, Sydney. Although the lecture covered vastly different topics (i.e. dwelling form and water management), the lessons are similar: we cannot continue to rely upon the existing urban development strategies and plans to combat issues with sustainability. New and innovative ways to manage urban development needs to be implemented to be more sustainable and environmentally focussed.

Tone Wheeler’s lecture focussed on innovative ways to imagine the built form of dwellings (mainly the ‘missing middle’ dwellings such as dual occupancies and terraces), focussing on factors such as the urban block, site orientation, and dwelling layout in order to maximise the most sustainable function of these dwellings. Wheeler’s innovations challenge the status-quo of urban development and presents options of development that targets sustainable design that maximise solar access, flexible spaces, more private open space, and increased cross-ventilation.

In a similar fashion, Greg Leslie’s presentation on urban water management in Sydney presents innovations on how to transform the city’s urban water supply as the demand for water continues to grow. New technologies such as water recycling, grey water reuse and stormwater harvesting focus on maximising the potential of water supply in cities by upgrading smaller, local infrastructure to retain and recycle water in more efficient ways. These strategies are more cost effective and environmentally sustainable than large projects that have been considered in Sydney such as accessing deep water storage and transferring water from the Shoalhaven.

Urban development in Sydney cannot keep throwing money at large projects that negatively affect the environment. Innovations in urban development must begin to focus on smarter and more efficient ways to manage cities and address sustainability issues through sustainable design solutions.

With the price of petrol breaching $2 per litre, it got me thinking about electric vehicles (or EVs) and the role they have in our vehicle mix in the future. It is inevitable that Australians will transition to EVs, however the rate is astonishingly slower than in other countries (Whitehead 2022).

The more EVs that there are in Australia, the more that Australia will not be affected by the global geo-political issues of the day affecting the price of petrol and oil. This transition will mean, in line with the development of more renewable energy, that Australia will become energy self-sufficient and can produce its own electricity to power our EVs. However, the Commonwealth Government have been slow to enact policy to encourage the purchase of EVs which make them much more expensive than petrol vehicles (Whitehead 2022).

I know that while I do not have a vehicle, the prospect of purchasing an EV is becoming more enticing as I begin to see EV charging stations located across the Eastern Suburbs, thanks in part to the 3 Council Regional Environment Program, a collaboration between Randwick, Woollahra and Waverley Councils. Initiatives at the local level such as this are paving the way for the EV transition where the Commonwealth Government fails to take any action. Action in producing more renewable energy powering our transport could make Australia a global leader in energy self-sufficiency.
