Contextual scripture information for my very own 16^12 DR (1/?)

For my upcoming "Shiftblr" article... '(Klara Kér Wishlist & Reality Shifting Scripture '(date-stamp 2024-01.1))

16^12 (campaign setting) is both a speculative fiction shared universe (campaign setting in a style somewhere between soft Science-Fiction, Isekai fantasy & alternate history/future... ) & a deliberate shifting destination for long-term reality-shifters. My focus is mostly onto making a comfortable yet self-contained realm to live in for extended periods of time, and is inspired mostly from several previous Civilization 5 campaigns of mine, among a ocean of other sources I take hints from.

Essentially, I work onto a expansive yet open source-esque history from cosmogony to heat death that focuses onto the time travel-ly mess of far future moth-folk agents cataloging history of a singular planet. And the overall feel is optimistic, silly, wholesome, empowering yet honest & grounded in historical trends extruded into the future. It ties also with many smaller stories (like the major self-obvious one I write a book for) across the meta-narrative structures I edify here.

In what I would consider the present day (what relates closest to our 2024 AD) on such a habitable planet, There are ~24 major Civilizations present, with ~20 major religions & ~16 major agencies roaming about the planet.

Ofc there are a few some more changes, but the very core really ties to a balance between realistic familiarity and the added comfort / amenities, hence the kinda conservatively few changes I pushed forth. That being said, I will try making source files for GPlates, QGIS & more available once I feel it is ready for preview beta usage alongside required documentation.

The Dawn and the Night Sky

“…and the True King banished the Darkness once and for all, returning Light to Eos,” Ignis speaks into the recorder in his hands. “The King made—” he continues, but the words catch in his throat. He pauses the recorder.

It’s silent in his study now, except for the tick-tock of the wall clock. Ignis takes a few deep breaths. It’s alright, you’re alright, he tells himself.

Once he feels grounded enough, he returns to the task at hand, turning the recorder back on. “The King,” he starts over, “made one final sacrifice. He gave his life for his people, for the future of Eos. His sacrifice opened a new era; we call it the Dawn of a New Age.” 

He switches off the recorder.

Cosmogony Preview

Contrary to what is likely to become popular belief, Noctis Lucis Caelum CXIV was not a natural-born warrior, but rather a reluctant leader who never had an opportunity to reach his full potential. Even as of this recording, tales of King Noctis’ kindness are spreading throughout Lucis, hand-in-hand with stories of his grand defeat of the Starscourge and The Immortal Accursed.

What these tales do not address--nor perhaps should they, when the people of Lucis require stability and heroic figures now more than ever--is that His Majesty struggled for quite some time to accept the burden the gods placed on his shoulders.

A little teaser for my submission to @cosmogonyzine, which is now open for pre-orders! Every part of this zine is gorgeous and fantastic, and if you like FFXV, I highly recommend grabbing a copy!

On a scale of 1 to catching a Shiny Cresselia, my hype for the Pokemon Direct is Shiny Cresselia.  Of course, it’s possible we aren’t going to see Gen 8 tomorrow, and the three Pokeballs in the preview pic have some other Pokemon in them and not the Gen 8 starters.  Either way, I think I’m resigning to assume we will.  It’s not a big issue if we don’t though.

This is why I’m a Pokemon fan - for the news cycle.  To see new, inspired, mysterious, and ridiculous Pokemon trickle out.  Pokemon that people will hate, or I’ll hate, then I’ll train it and they’ll be my favorite.  Pokemon we’ll swear are evolutions of other Pokemon.  Psudo-mascots that share looks with the supporting cast, like Lucario, Zoroark, or the Ultra Beasts.   

I didn’t play RBY - I came around for the news cycle of Gen 2, which is how I got into the habit of appreciating that more than anything.  My first critter drawings were on IGN printouts of “known Gold/Silver Pokemon” like Togepi, Togetic, and Houndoom.  This was when I was in was barely in middle school.  My earliest memories of the Gen 3 news cycle were visiting Serebii at my best friend’s house and seeing the site on hiatus, just showing pictures of Azurill, Wailmur, Wynaut and Kecleon and nothing else. 

It’s weird to think how long Gen 3 lasted, because I was following Serebii’s Discovery Thread for the Japanese version of Diamond and Pearl in my first year of college.  My college classes had my brain buzzing with cultural studies and cosmogony, and that was perfect for pondering the symbolism of the new Gen 4 legendaries.

The news cycle for Gen 5 was a lot less eventful I feel, but maybe that’s because I spent the whole time on the Serebii forums sleuthing out the details and coming up with symbolic analyses about Zekrom and Reshiram being Jupiter and Saturn.  Many of the Pokemon in Serebii’s initial reveal, like the elemental monkey evolutions, Druddigon, Golurk, and Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect all seemed fake to me.  I mean, really?  A rocking horse, a doll, and a robot as a mythical Pokemon?  What’s up with all the goofy toy-inspired Pokemon in Unova?  Of course, I’ve definitely come around, and the ambitious experimental nature of the Unovan designs is what makes me love them.

X and Y had by far the best reveal of any Pokemon game though.  The trailer was first thing in the morning, and it revealed the graphical changes, the starters, the new landmarks of the region, and the legendaries.  It definitely made a strong impression and kicked off the marketing for Gen 6 with by including Prism Tower in the opening shot.  By comparison, the Sun and Moon reveal was back to just revealing the logos and some concept art.  Mega Mewtwo was also a big part of this news cycle though - it was fun to speculate how it could possibly be related to Mewtwo, and whether it should.

Initially, Sun and Moon’s reveal cycle completely dampened my enthusiasm.  It didn’t help that the logos leaked, and I wasn’t impressed with them either for some reason.  Later trailers helped a lot, and I still listen to that awesome music from one of the final trailers.  A lot of the speculation that kept the hype up involved the topic of whether or not Lillie, Lusamine, and Guzma were all Ultra Beasts.  A lot of us preferred to think that coming to the conclusion the characters were just designed off their looks like past characters such as N or Sir Aaron.  Altogether it was still a great news cycle, just a slow one. 

Overall, the reveals have been getting better, and since Gen 5, GameFreak hasn’t just been revealing new titles and new Pokemon - in each generation, they’ve rolled out a new self-contained world in the architecture, themes, and culture of each new region.  Think about how they’ve escalated the importance of the region.  Sinnoh didn’t need a Skyarrow Bridge or a Castelia City.  Unova would’ve struggled to do justice to the Prism Tower.  Kalos had routes that often used French titles, but it was nothing compared to the deep Hawaiian culture and language integrated into the Sun and Moon Pokedex.  They even came up with a distinct way for the Alolan cast to talk.

So I’m excited to see the new region and the general world that the upcoming news cycle sets up for the new generation of Pokemon.  For all we know they could de-emphasize the region...but I doubt that, given the expectation on GameFreak to ramp up the graphics and spectacle.

Jeff Loveness Boards AfterShock for New Sci-fi Series, World Reader

AfterShock has announced the addition of Emmy-nominee Jeff Loveness (“Groot,” “Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!”) to its stable of talent for a brand-new sci-fi series, titled “World Reader,” alongside AfterShock veteran and artist Juan Doe (“Animosity: The Rise”). The publisher has provided details on the exciting new title in addition to a few unlettered preview pages by Doe.

“When Mike Marts and AfterShock offered me my first creator-owned series, I tried to pitch the biggest idea I could think of,” Loveness said in an official statement. “Mike and the AfterShock team were completely on board and helped foster it from the beginning. I couldn’t have asked for a more open and exciting creative experience. I’ve always loved big, existential sci-fi that takes a swing at the Universe. Films like Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” and “2001”, mixed with modern ones like ‘Contact’ and Arrival’ and Ray Bradbury sci-fi were huge huge influences on this story. AfterShock gave me the freedom to combine spirituality, sci-fi, and horror with Cosmogony and Apocalypse narratives in every issue. We’ve got a psychic astronaut traveling to dead worlds, talking to space ghosts and trying to figure out what’s killing life across the Universe… should have something fun and weird for everybody.”

Loveness added, “And on art, Juan Doe brings such intense stylization to this. I’ve been a fan of his work for years, so it’s great to finally collaborate with him. I am not worthy, and luckily he hasn’t figured that out yet. Please don’t tell him.”
