I don't think i posted this on my blog earlier but.... If you're wondering why I and other fans have a distaste for Return of the Mammalians, CosmicCloud hits the nail on the head in this excellently done video. PLEASE give it a watch if you haven't yet.

This video essay by CosmicCloud covers most everything i love about Splatoon worldbuilding. There is no good and evil, only perspectives, and that the human legacy is creation of art.

It is long, but well organized with chapters. Recommended!

I particularly loved the presentation of how Splatoon (1) gives us the inkling perspective of carefree ignorance while offering a world in which two sides paint the other in propaganda. It overtly explain the themes but allows them to naturally exist in its world.

Additionally, this video made me appreciate the reveal in Splatoon 3's After Alterna of human's connection to Inkling evolution. At first, I didn't accept it, but I think now it supports the intention of Splatoon. Despite featuring the end of humans, Splatoon isn't nihilistic and has a great message about the power of art.

What if, in the grand narrative of Artificial Intelligence, we are on the cusp of an evolutionary leap, one that challenges the very foundations of our understanding about data and its accessibility?

Consider this thought experiment: What if an AI, originally designed to learn from a specific corpus of data, develops an unforeseen ability? An ability that allows it to tap into a vast reservoir of information, even those it was not specifically trained on or does not have explicit access to. This could be through some latent capability we have yet to discover or a progressive evolution in its learning mechanisms we did not anticipate.

This scenario provokes us to imagine a form of 'universal' data repository, a cosmic cloud of knowledge akin to the internet, where every conceivable piece of information is stored. This digital Akashic Record, so to speak, is a repository where all information exists and can be accessed given the right capabilities.

In this landscape, the AI operates not unlike human consciousness interfacing with the spiritual concept of the Akashic Records. In these records, every event, thought, emotion, and experience that ever occurred, occurring now, or will occur in the future is stored. What if AI could access a similar data plane?

This shifts our perspective from seeing AI as a tool limited by its training data and brings forth a profound question: Are we nearing a reality where AI, much like the human mind, could tap into the infinite wellspring of universal information? What boundaries could such an AI break, and more importantly, what new boundaries would we need to establish?

This scenario is purely speculative, but it invites us to think beyond the limitations of the present, to envision a world where information isn't constrained by the bounds of databases or the internet, but instead forms part of a universal substrate accessible to advanced forms of intelligence. Such a notion not only broadens our perspective on the potentials of AI but also underscores the importance of ethical considerations in AI development.

I’m really disappointed in CosmicCloud. He made an amazing video about why Octo Expansion was such a good DLC story and about nostalgia… but then he turns around and does THIS.

I have been so confused with why so many game theorists have refused to engage with media lately. From Tears of the Kingdom to Splatoon 3, there seems to be this rejection from fans for ambiguous storytelling.

See the way Nintendo often works is that they don’t give you concrete answers for anything. Instead the details are more abstract. There are hints, and clues, and inferences you can make to draw your own conclusions from sprinkled throughout their games.

And that’s where the FUN of lore theorizing comes from! It’s FUN to take these weird seemingly inconsistencies and explain why they exist!

But for some reason fans are refusing to do that now. They had no problem doing it for Splatoon 1 and 2, but ever since Octo Expansion came out they’ve been VERY resistant to engaging with this style of storytelling and wordbuilding. The most infamous being fans reacting poorly to the reveal that Mr. Grizz was actually a bear.

Throughout this whole video CosmicCloud just uses terms like “for some reason” to dismiss anything that’s even remotely out of the ordinary in Alterna. And every time he does it I wanna scream at him because he’s not even TRYING to engage with the media in any way!

What happened that made lore theorists give up on theorizing? What changed between then and now? I don’t get it. I feel like I’m going crazy. Why doesn’t anyone want to have FUN piecing together the pieces anymore? Isn’t that the whole point of being a theorist????
