700 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours and the airstrikes are more violent each night. Gaza's hospitals have fuel left for two more days. Israel only allowed aid into Gaza on the condition they didn't carry fuel. The Indonesian hospital has shut down already, because doctors have no supplies and no choice but to let the wounded die. They're calling it a collapse but the term doesn't do it justice.
Over a 100 incubator babies are at risk. There are 50.000 pregnant women in Gaza right now, and 5.500 due to give birth this month. Menstruating people are taking pills in order to stop their periods, because they do not have pads or water to maintain hygiene. Surgeons are operating without anesthesia. Water is not reaching Gazans because there's no electricity or fuel for water pumps.
There's no excuse for this. Israel justifies the airstrikes by saying they want to destroy Hamas infrastructure and release the hostages, but they have refused to negotiate for their release. Hamas informed Israel they wanted to release two elderly women without anything in return, and Israel refused. Netanyahu said they wouldn't take their own civilians back because it was "mendacious propaganda." When the hostages were finally released, Netanyahu prohibited the hospital from giving press releases. Yocheved Lifshitz went behind their backs and talked to the press anyway, saying she was treated very well by Hamas, but the government abandoned them. They're being used as straw men. Israel is conditioning the entry of fuel to the release of hostages and yet, according to The Wall Street Journal, when Hamas proposed to exchange 50 hostages for fuel they denied. IDF officials have said they fear the release of more hostages because that might withhold the order to their ground invasion. They do not care as long as they can use the hostages as a pretext for their slaughtering.
There's a turning tide for Palestine in public support. Support for Israel was built through decades of propaganda and we are making a dent into it. Zionists are desperate, holding zoom meetings to promote zionism, but we have to do so much more. We have to shame people in power into supporting the Palestinian cause.
Keep yourself updated and share Palestinian voices, looking to inform yourself from the sources. Palestinians have asked of us only that we share, tweet and post, over and over. Muna El-Kurd said every tweet is like a treasure to them, because their voices are repressed on social media and even on this very app. Make it your action item to share something about the Palestinian plight everyday. Take action. You can participate in boycotts wherever you are in the world, through BDS guidelines. Right now, they are focusing on boycotting (don't be overwhelmed by gigantic boycott lists. Only boycott additional brands if you can):
Carrefour
HP
Puma
Sabra
Sodastream
Ahava cosmetics
Israeli fruits and vegetables
Push for a cultural boycott - pressure your favorite artist to speak out on Palestine and cancel any upcoming performances on occupied territory (Lorde cancelled her gig in Israel because of this. It works.)
If you can, participate in direct action or donate. Palestine Action works to shut down Israeli weapons factories in the UK and USA, and have successfully shut down one of their firms in London. Some of the activists are going on trial and are calling for mobilizing on court.
Call your representatives. The Labour Party in the UK had an emergency meeting after several councilors threatened to resign if they didn't condemn Israeli war crimes. Calling to show your complaints works, even more if you live in a country that funds genocide.

I'm pulling you back onstage, what's this about the dangers of white lead makeup being known already at the time it was used?
They were!
Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo, writing in 1598. For anyone who's struggling with the typeface (spelling preserved):
OF CERUSSE, AND THE EFFECTS thereof. The Ceruse, or white lead, which women use to better their complexion, is made of lead and vineger; which mixture is naturally a great drier; and is used by the Chirugions [surgeons] to drie up moiste sores. So that those women which use it about their faces, doe quickly become withered and gray-headed, because this doth so mightely drie up the naturall moysture of their flesh. And if any give not credite to my reporte; let them but observe such as have used it, and I doubt not but they will easily bee satisfied.
That's putting it mildly- ceruse could also cause skin peeling, hair loss, paralysis, seizures, organ damage, a host of other symptoms, and even death. But still, they were at least aware that it was Not GoodTM, and it's possible other sources I haven't read more accurately stress the gravity of the danger. Certainly it was known to be deadly by the 18th century, when the death of 27-year-old socialite Maria Gunning, Countess of Coventry was ascribed to her alleged use thereof. (I've never seen proof of this, and it's important to remember that as an Irishwoman, she may have faced undue hostility in English high society- and had very light skin naturally).
It's also difficult to trace just how popular ceruse even was, because less harmful forms of white face paint and powder also existed. One could speculate that this woman or that used ceruse, but nobody did a survey of such things. It was definitely real- cosmetic white lead tablets have been found dating as far back as ancient Greece -but whether it was the Sephora foundation of its day or the BBL (ie a dangerous beauty aid that a few devotees turned to but most eschewed) cannot truly be known.
By the 19th century, ceruse makeup had passed completely out of use as far as I know. Its legend grew as a cautionary tale on the dangers of vanity; the "fact" that Queen Elizabeth I used it was repeated over and over until it became common- if totally unsupported -knowledge. They had arsenic complexion wafers in the latter half of the 1800s- although one brand much advertised in the US was tested by contemporary scientists and found to be mostly lactose with only tiny amounts of arsenic or none at all, so cost-cutting entrepreneurs may have accidentally prevented illness or death. IF the wafers were popular at all, which once again remains unknown- certainly few letters and diaries I'm aware of mention them, if any.
(Interestingly, there's an echo of Maria Gunning's legend in Victorian newspaper stories about socialites "enameling," or applying a plaster-like layer of semi-permanent toxic makeup to their faces. Enameling was alleged to be undetectible but It's Definitely There; Trust Us; A Friend Of A Friend Of Alva Vanderbilt's Cousin's Underbutler Said, etc. This is similarly lacking in any solid evidence; recipes for a product called "enamel" do exist in period texts, but it always seems to be more akin to liquid foundation today, and I've personally only seen one such preparation containing lead. Many even included zinc oxide, which might have provided some unintentional SPF.)
#ask#sorcerorvaati#history#fashion history#makeup#renaissance fashion#I DID find a recipe for theatrical greasepaint with asbestos in it from 1893 which. YikesTM

"I did it for me," reads the plaque held by the woman in a Botox ad. There's a sense that she's presenting the plaque to us, the audience, and it's kind of unnerving. The makers of the ad are conversant in the basic language of both body acceptance and choice feminism, and this ad is an attempt to make an end-run around any existing skepticism about cosmetic surgery, by appealing to free, market-savvy choice and its result, empowerment. This woman who paid a tidy sum of money for a smooth forehead and nonexistent nasolabial folds is not a dupe of the patriarchy, dammit! She's not doing it for a man; she's not doing it for a woman; she's doing it for herself, and those are the magic words. Variations on âI did it for meâ appear and reappear in ads for Botox and breast implants; they're present when Vogue suggestsâyou know, just puts it out thereâthat you could shorten your toes in order to better fit them into Jimmy Choos; they exist whenever morning talk-radio hosts give away free breast implants to the woman with the best small-boobs sob story. "I did it for me," "I did it to feel better about myself," and, "I'm not doing it for anyone else" are defensive reflexes that acknowledge an imagined feminist disapproval and impatiently brush it away.
It's been twenty-five years since Naomi Wolf wrote, in her bestselling book The Beauty Myth, that "The ideology of beauty is the last one remaining of the old feminine ideologies that still has the power to control those women whom second-wave feminism would have otherwise made relatively uncontrollable." For all the gains that various women's movements have made possible, rigidly prescribed, predominantly white beauty standards are one site where time has not revolutionized our thinking. Concurrently, it's also where the expansion of consumer choice has made it possible to bow to such standards in countless new ways.
Choice has become the primary way to talk about looks, a phenomenon that journalist Alex Kuczynski called "an activism of aesthetics" in her 2006 book Beauty Junkies. In the book, the cosmetic surgery industry in particular is portrayed as a kind of Thunderdome where the waiting lists for a new injectable climb into the double digits, impeccably spray-tanned celebrity doctors jostle for prime soundbite space in women's magazines, and speakers at surgeons' conventions end their speeches with a call to "Push plastic surgery." With a rise in optionsâmore doctors, more competing pharmaceutical brands, the rise of cosmetic-surgery tourism that promises cheap procedures in tropical locationsâthe landscape of sculpted noses and liposuctioned abs has been defined by choice. The "activism," too, is one of individual choiceâit refers to being proactive about one's own appearance, vigilant enough to be able to head off wrinkles, droops, and sags at the pass. Framed within our neoliberal discourse, an activism of aesthetics doesn't dismantle the beauty standards that telegraph worth and status, but advocates for everyone's right to purchase whatever interventions are necessary to achieve those standards. The individual world shrinks to the size of a doctor's office; other people exist only as points of physical comparison.
Though we often think of beauty and body imperatives in their prefeminist formâthe hobbling footbinding, the lead whitening powders, the tapeworm dietâthe ostensibly consciousness-raised decades since the 1970s have brought a mind-boggling array of dictates, standards, and trends to all genders, but most forcefully to women. When capri pants were the move of the moment in the 1990s, Vogue was there to suggest quick surgical fixes for knobby knees and undefined calves. Less than ten years later, the clavicle was the body part du jour, balancing the trend of voluminous clothing with reassuring proof that, under all that material, the wearer was appropriately thin. (One clavicle-boasting woman stated to The New York Times that the clavicle was the "easiest and least controversial expression of a kind of sex appeal"ânot as obviously sexy as breasts, but evidence of a physical discipline coveted among the fashion set.) A handful of years after that, the focus moved south again, to the "thigh gap" coveted by a largely young audience, some of whom blogged about their pursuit of the gap with diet journals and process photos.
Though certain types of bodies have historically come in and out of fashionâthe flapper dresses of the 1920s required a boyish, hipless figure, while the tight angora sweaters of the '50s demanded breasts, or at least the padded semblance of themâthe pace with which bodies are presented as the "right" ones to have has quickened. The beachy girls-next-door of the 1970s were elbowed out by the Amazonion supermodels of the 1980s, who gave way to the heroin-chic waifs of the '90s, who were knocked off the editorial pages of the early 2000s by the Brazilian bombshells, who were then edged out by the doll-eyed British blondes. Meanwhile, the fashion industry selectively co-opts whatever "ethnic" attributes can be appropriated in the service of a trend. Black and Latina women with junk in the trunk who have been erased by mainstream glossies, overlooked as runway models, and ill-served by pants designed for comparatively fat rears were rightly annoyed to hear from Vogue, in 2014, that "We're Officially in the Era of the Big Booty" thanks to stars like Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus, and Kim Kardashian. There is no wrong way to have a body" wrote author and size-positive sage Hanne Blank, but that sentiment will always be contradicted by a market, and a media, that depends on people not believing it.

I just can't get the idea of soulmate!jason where you share scars out of my head. Jason is a canvas of scars. We all find them beautiful and wouldn't judge him even if we were held at gun point. But imagine you were getting those scars at the same time he was... it would be hard. Of course you are worried about your soulmate, but when you wake up with a permanent, very purposeful J branded onto your face, can you really tell me you wouldn't be embarrassed to go outside? Afraid of meeting your soulmate who seems to be either a criminal or in a very dangerous victim situation? Would you not be even a little angry that now your face is ruined? (I know there is makeup, but we are ignoring that for a second) Yes, you share these scars with your soulmate and somewhere along the line you'd find peace with them. But in the moment when you look in the mirror and find an autopsy scar... I can only imagine what you would feel. Oh, and poor Jason. He would never be able to forgive himself. He probably wouldn't even realize he has a soulmate because if you get a scar he wouldn't notice it beside all of his. This isn't a request. I just wanted to share my thoughts and hear yours. I'm asking a few different creators so feel free to ask for another person's opinion as well!
oh my god, anon, ur brain!!! iâm sure this is messy but 1: i love requests and 2: i just started typing most of this late last night
((i also saw a few other respond to this but i purposely didnt read them so if anything is similar its witchcraft or smthing idk))
i think the smaller robin scars sort of annoy you, when youâre younger. you donât see how the trade off of your small acne scars is fair to these constant random but mostly well healed ones scars are. you have a running joke with your closest friends about how you have a lecture for your soulmate whenever you meet them.
youâre a dumb kid, teenager at best, but when you wake up one morning, dozen of burn scars, scars of a deep beating, and a harsh âjâ plastered on your face, you have a breakdown for both of you. so scared for whatever your soulmates been through, when, a day or so later, autopsy scars appear, you go numb. you arenât an idiot, you know what those scars are from.
youâve never heard of scars from a soulmate post death, but you donât know what else they could mean, and no more scars show up after that.
how do you deal with being so young knowing you had a soulmate who had a hard life cut short, and now youâre doomed to be alone forever? maybe you go numb, just float through life, dissociating. or maybe you devote yourself to your studies, maybe you work to help kids in tough situations like your almost love. maybe somewhere in between.
i think if you live in gotham, you have a small feeling why there was a j, i think maybe you learn some makeup skills, use things like cosmetic wax and a precise foundation routine to cover it, you canât afford the fancy kind of plastic surgeons who specialize in soulmate scars.
you think youâre done, accept this is your life.
then years later, more scars start appearing? precise, dangerous scars? given only the bare minimum medical care? you think you must be broken. you start spending even more time with your therapist, maybe start researching even more.
one of these late nights at the library youâre walking home in gotham, youâd lost track of time but the sweet redheaded librarian named barbara reminded you to leave before it got too too late, still, you live in a rough part of town, and batmanâs been busy lately with this new crime lord, you donât care either way, too trapped in your own world of hurt and confusion, you donât even realize what youâd walked into.
jason never gave much thought to his soulmate, heâd never even noticed any scars, thought maybe he didnât even have one. definitely didnât have one after his death.
heâd stalking after batman one night, both are aware the other one knows, but they arent confronting each other tonight, and when they turn onto a certain street he gets an odd feeling and he suddenly finds himself in front of of you,
and hes speechless, his world crashing down so quickly, because all he can see is the âjâ on your your face.
jason never gave much thought to his soulmate, and now he literally walked face first into them, and nothing is the same for either of you from there on out.

You Are Beautiful and Perfectly Imperfect Just the Way You AreÂ
I am pretty sure everyone wants to feel beautiful, look good and be presentable, be it offline or online. We want to create a good impression of ourselves that reflects our appearance and personality. It is especially evident in our current generation, where we will take great pictures and post them on social media. This consists of our day-to-day activities, outfits of the day (#OOTD), unforgettable moments and so on. It has become a trend of romanticizing mundane daily hustle and bustle. One of the ways we do this is by applying filters to our photos. Â
What is Filter? Â
A filter is a process where something is added or removed to distort or alter texts or photos. It has become a significant tool in the social media world (Rettberg 2014 p. 21). It allows us to edit the photos into something more aesthetically pleasing. However, it can also use as a way to entertain us and our friends. For instance, TikTok is known for its interactive filters, such as âWhich Disney Characters Are You?â. There are so many types of filters, varying from beauty filters to mini-games, and try-on products.Â
Filters have come a long way, and we use them daily. It has a couple of benefits to it, especially for brands! It creates a high engagement, which in turn provides a highly memorable experience. Filters are very interactive, and it requires the userâs full attention. Hence, it is wonderful for advertising a product or service, as it proves to have 70% memory recall, as compared to traditional advertising (Hamilton 2022). Â
Plus, it also enhances the purchasing journey of customers. People do not need to go to physical stores anymore. We can merely try on makeup products through this technology, which can influence spontaneous buying (Hamilton 2022). On top of that, filters are such a pleasure to experiment with, especially the ones that highlight your greatest features and make you feel cute (Belle 2018). I mean, who does not like that, right? Â
But there are a few cons to Filters... Â
Unfortunately, it can distort our perception of reality, especially beauty filters. It becomes even worse with the beauty representation depicted through media and society. Society tends to pressure both men and women on a specific beauty standard needed to accomplish to be more socially desirable. This could create a person to have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Those with this disorder are concerned with some aspects of their appearance that they find unattractive (Coy-Dibley 2016 p. 2). It can become serious when one starts experiencing anxiety and obsession over their appearance through compulsive habits and routines, such as non-stop grooming and hiding certain âunattractiveâ body areas (Coy-Dibley 2016 p. 3). Â
Hence, numerous images portrayed by the media have a massive impact on those with BDD or those who are highly insecure. According to Orbach, we can see that many industries play on peopleâs body insecurities, highlighting them and all their supposed physical faults. They emphasize how these can be modified to look âbetterâ, shaping the idealized concept of beauty. I believe we can all agree that the media and society sometimes have a ridiculous beauty standard that is unceasingly narrow and unrealistic (Coy-Dibley 2016 p. 3). Â
According to a survey in 2017 by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), cosmetic surgeons first recognized a pattern of patients seeking surgery to better mimic how they appear using filters. In line with the results of that survey, 55% of surgeons reported seeing patients who wanted surgery primarily to enhance their appearance in selfies. In agreement with the previous point, in a 2015 study that looked at the impact of edited selfies on young girls' body dissatisfaction, people who regularly edit their photos are more concerned about their bodies and are more inclined to develop a distorted view of how they actually look. Â
âI just see a lot of images that are just really unrealistic, and it sets up unrealistic expectations for patients because theyâre trying to look like a fantasized version of themselves,â - Dr Vashi Â
Body Positivity Movement Â
In recent years, there has been a monumental shift in how bodies are represented in the media. Now you can see multiple plus-size celebrities on the screen, from fashion advertising to television shows. Big influential brands, such as H&M, have extended their clothing line to cater to those who are plus size (Yeboah 2020).
youtube
Other than that, makeup brands start expanding their shade range to provide for various skin colours. I am sure you would have heard of Fenty Beauty, a cosmetic brand that became one of the first makeup brands to launch 50 shades, which include albinos and dark-skinned people.
Now people are starting to accept that people come in different shapes, sizes and colours. Everyone deserves to be celebrated, and everyone is beautiful just the way they are. Â
Although of course that this movement still has a long way to go. We can still see many nasty and insensitive comments due to the deep-rooted beauty standards in our society. Despite it, we must all uplift one another and create awareness, and with this, it can dismantle the toxic and hazardous narratives about unrealistic beauty standards by the media (Yeboah 2020). Together, we can create a safe space for every person to accept and love themselves. Â

NSFW:
Once I cut a bunch of gashes into my arm. My parents had me go to a plastic surgeon to have them lasered out, which was only partially successful. Anyway, the whole treatment ended up costing several thousand dollars, which I regretâmuch more than the scarring itselfâ because long sleeve shirts are totally a thing. I did eventually gently refuse any more treatments.Â
I have scarring of a similar kind on my chest but those are much more evident because I was quite intoxicated when I made those. What's really interesting is I think one of those actually went to the bone, or near it. It is right on my sternum which is deformed from fencing.Â
The interesting part about cutting yourself is that the blood doesn't flow in immediately. For a few seconds at the beginning, itâs just a clean white grove. Well, less than a few seconds, but, in such moments, your perception of the passage of time slows down.
A couple weeks later I was having sex with this woman. I met her a few hours prior. I didn't even know her last name or, for that matter, her first name. I only knew her nickname. But to be fair to my former self, she was a friend of my friends. Anyway, she said the scars in the middle of my chest were going to stay. She had similar ones. However, the key part was that she had scars along the bottom of her breasts from a reduction surgery. When I had the marks on my arm treated the doctor told my parents to get me psychiatric help so as to prevent me from doing it again. It seems to me a little unsettling that she had cosmetic surgery performed on her breasts around the same time she was injuring herself. Actually, now that I write this I recall that sometimes breast reduction surgery is performed to ease back pain. So that sort of undercuts my point, I guess.Â
I wonder if there's actually a point to this post or its just macho boasting about sex. I think the point is that I was pretty miserable back then even though I was drinking trendy brands of alcohol and having casual sex. Whereas now I'm not having any sex, casual or otherwise, and I'm not really drinking and I'm much happier. It's not that there's anything bad about sex, or drinking, it's just that those things have to be done in the proper context. See, if this was macho I would not have emphasized that I'm not having sex.
