Duplex alloys were originally created to combat corrosion problems caused by chloride-bearing cooling waters and other aggressive chemical process fluids. Called Duplex because of its mixed microstructure with about equal proportions of ferrite and austenite, duplex stainless steels are a family of grades, which range in corrosion performance depending on their alloy content. The chemical composition based on high contents of Cr and Mo, improves intergranular and pitting corrosion resistance, respectively. Additions of nitrogen can promote structural hardening by interstitial solid solution mechanism, which raises the yield strength and ultimate strength values without impairing toughness. Moreover, the two-phase microstructure guarantees higher resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in comparison with conventional stainless steels.

Stainless Steel Plates
Stainless steel is used primarily when corrosion or oxidation is a problem. The function that they perform cannot be duplicated by other materials for their cost. Over 50 years ago, it was discovered that a minimum of 12% chromium would impart corrosion and oxidation resistance to steel.  Hence the definition "Stainless Steels", are those ferrous alloys that contain a minimum of 12% chromium for corrosion resistance.  This development was the start of a family of alloys which has enabled the advancement and growth of chemical processing and power generating systems upon which our technological society is based.  Subsequently several important sub-categories of stainless steels have been developed. Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark CORTEN B steel and sometimes written without the hyphen as "CORTEN B steel", is a group of steel alloys which were developed to obviate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. United States Steel Corporation (USS) holds the registered trademark on the name CORTEN B. Although USS sold its discrete plate business to International Steel Group (now Arcelor-Mittal) in 2003, it still sells CORTEN B branded material in strip-mill plate and sheet forms.  The original CORTEN B received the standard designation ASTM A 242 TYPE-II("COR-TEN B") from the ASTM International standards group. Newer ASTM grades are A 588 ("CORTEN B") and A 606 for thin sheet. All alloys are in common production and use.  JIS G 3125:2004: Japanese grade for weather resistant steel plates: Superior atmospheric corrosion resisting rolled steels This Standard specifies the rolled steel having high atmospheric corrosion resistance, to be used for vehicle, building, steel tower and other structure. IRSM 41-97 Corrosion Resistance steel INDIAN grade for weather resistant steel plates: IRSM 41-97 standard of Indian railways specifically formed for wagon body due to it high resistance to corrosion, Major wagon builder being Rail Coach Factory.

ASTM 242 TYPE-1
The original ASTM 242 TYPE-1 alloy has a yield strength of 50,000 pounds per square inch (340,000 kPa) and ultimate tensile strength of 70,000 psi (480,000 kPa) for light-medium rolled shapes and plates up to 0.75 inches (19 mm) thick. It has yield strength of 46,000 psi (320,000 kPa) and ultimate strength of 67,000 psi (460,000 kPa) for medium weight rolled shapes and plates from 0.75–1 inch (19–25 mm) thick. The thickest rolled sections and plates – from 1.5–4 in (38–100 mm) thick have yield strength of 42,000 psi (290,000 kPa) and ultimate strength of 63,000 psi (430,000 kPa).

This specification on Boiler & Pressure Vessel Steel Plates covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. According to different strength levels, the plates are available in four grades: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70. 904L® alloy (UNS N08904) is an austenitic stainless steel alloy designed for a middle to high level of corrosion resistance. The alloy contains high levels of chromium and nickel with additions of molybdenum and copper to provide added corrosion resistance in certain media. The alloy is produced to low carbon levels for use in the welded condition as in welded vessels and other large and complex fabrications. The high nickel (25%) and molybdenum (4% - 5%) contents of the 904L® alloy provide good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Chromium, molybdenum and nickel levels provide a level of general and chloride pitting corrosion resistance above the level of Types 316 and 317 in many media. The copper addition at this alloy content provides added resistance to reducing media such as hot phosphoric acid and dilute sulfuric acid. The N08904 alloy has been incorporated in ASTM and ASME specifications, and is widely and readily available in a variety of product forms, welding electrodes, and fittings. The Alloy 904L® alloy has performed well in a variety of service environments such as utility scrubbers, acid and fertilizer production.
