Difference between Domestic and Commercial Ironing Presses
Convinced that crisply ironed dresses are fundamental to a good life, a professional ironing service near me would be the best bet. Prime Laundry does an excellent job of caring for dainty dresses. Ironing maintains shape and texture and extends dress longevity. While washing and ironing usually go together, some prefer to wash at home. Washing privately is hardly possible where large bundles are concerned. In such cases, it is wise to let the laundry handle it. They do it efficiently, with free pick up and delivery at the doorstep, usually on the same day.
Come to think of it, not all ironing presses are similar. Dainty domestic ones are built for small tasks and carry less power of 240V. Domestic irons can handle shirts and trousers, gowns, and skirts. They usually suffice for daily needs like pressing workwear and uniforms. Not built for heavy use, they are less expensive and fragile.
Comparatively, heavy-duty commercial irons are suitable for laundry and dry-cleaning businesses. They are sturdier and more durable. Costing much more, they may touch 400V of power. Bedsheets, curtains, and duvet covers would need these presses. They cost more and help with the sustained ironing of hundreds of large items all day.
Ironing service prices come as a happy surprise
Isn’t it good to know that some services, like ironing, are reasonably priced? While prices are generally on the rise, many laundries bring down the cost. Online contact is easy. Competition keeps prices within affordable levels. It is true that the larger the work entrusted to laundries, the more cost-effective it is. When it comes to larger items, the ironing price would naturally be higher. Shirts and trousers could quickly be ironed at home with the domestic iron. The bigger item must have professional support. Get ironing services in London to do the sensitive work well.
Ironing done by the experts makes a mark professionally. Compared to the haphazard ironing at home, the expert irons garments gracefully. They make a deep impression. The dress retains its shape and proportions, and the wearer feels good all day. Corporate lives and complex work procedures require such smart efficiency. Battles are fought not only in the war but also in boardrooms and workplaces. Costumes have a significant role to play. According to the demands of the weather, suitable dresses motivate the work or social environment. In controlled, air-conditioned places, it is easier to dress and work well without temperature changes.
An ironing service near me provides support
The problem is that dresses need to be washed and ironed over and over again. Regularly, perhaps twice a week, the dresses need maintenance. Wearing uniforms all day collects sweat, dust, and grime according to exposure and pollution levels. Coats and overcoats need to be dry cleaned less often, comparatively speaking. Like medical, media, and technology support, reliable laundry becomes a dire need. The laundry is updated with communication technology and advanced washers, dryers, and presses. It can cope with the oddest of timings according to client specifications. Punctuality is their hallmark, and the quality of work is deeply impressive. Count on them for tasks that bring confidence and contribute to family or business success.
Save time and money
Ironing well on a large scale, like for hotels and hospitals, is the task of the professionals. They bring many advantages, like preserving quality and ensuring that garments last longer. Ironing service Birmingham practices ironing techniques. It enhances attractiveness and helps remove any trace of wrinkles and scorch marks. Dainty dresses reveal their best secrets, and the wearer is highlighted for those special occasions. In the winning personality game, both the tailor and the laundry, along with the cloth, deserve praise. When it comes to Fashion Week and beauty contests too, along with the daily media, the costumes play all-important roles.
Practically speaking, everybody needs ironing clothes near me as a top priority. Some things cannot change, and washing and ironing are crucial in daily life. How often the services may be needed may differ according to the situation. Workwear may not need very frequent changes in comparison to corporate wear, which is very formal. While domestic ironing could fulfil basic needs. Commercial ironing is a must for larger businesses and corporations.

Biggest fashion trends reflect a world in crisis
Written by Fiona Sinclair Scott, CNN
To look back at the year in fashion is to look back at a year of crisis. In the first few months of 2020, as the severity and scale of the coronavirus pandemic became clear, businesses around the world faced incomparable challenges posed by the largest global public health crisis in generations. The fashion industry was not immune.
Making clothes became extremely difficult, and many of us — forced to stay at home amid job insecurity and health concerns — lost our appetite for buying them.
A recent report by consulting firm McKinsey and The Business of Fashion showed that fashion sales in China dropped significantly at the beginning of the year, while in Europe and the US they fell off a cliff edge in March. The same report predicted that fashion companies’ year-on-year profits will decline by approximately 90 percent for 2020, following a 4% rise the year before.
But the pandemic wasn’t the only crisis the industry faced. While the fashion world was already reckoning with uncomfortable truths about its impact and practices — from its role in the climate crisis and poor working conditions for garment factory workers, to its failure to create inclusive, diverse workplaces — the events of 2020 have only served to further highlight these problems.
Suddenly, fashion had to find its place in a world ill-at-ease with the ideas of fantasy, frivolity and indulgence that it has long depended on.

For Shefalee Vasudev, founding editor of India’s Voice of Fashion magazine, this year has heralded “the great unmasking” of fashion. “The unseen other side of what we bring back home as a beautiful garment or product was revealed,” she wrote via email from Delhi. “Migrants walking back to their homes in villages, disowned as they were by the cities and their employers, was among the most poignant images that surfaced from India.”
Vasudev, who authored “Powder Room: The Untold Story of Indian Fashion,” pointed to “poorly paid laborers, unequal profits and (lack of) copyright credits to artisans,” as some of the most pressing issues laid bare by the pandemic in India. Meanwhile in the United States, and then countries around the world, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement put the issue of systemic racism firmly on the industry’s agenda. Brands awkwardly grappled with how to respond. Many got it wrong and were quickly called out for making token gestures.

“Plain and simple, I don’t think there is the intention behind (online gestures) to make long-lasting, sustainable change,” said Teen Vogue editor-in-chief, Lindsay Peoples Wagner, in an email to CNN in June. “Everyone can hop onto the BLM movement right now on social media, but what are you doing in your home, in your corporate office, with your connections, with the power you have?”
Months later, Wagner launched the Black in Fashion Council (with publicist Sandrine Charles) to drive better representation, advance opportunities for Black people in fashion and hold the industry accountable.
Writing from Nigeria, a country that experienced its own set of crises this year, Omoyemi Akerele, founder of Lagos Fashion Week, said along with the coronavirus pandemic, “civil unrest across African countries and the pandemic of racism, have been human disasters of epic proportions with countless lives lost, reminding us of the one thread that binds us all together: our humanity.”
To talk about fashion trends following a year defined by crisis may seem nugatory, but the themes that emerged offer a window into these extraordinary times.
Read on for one last look at fashion around the world in 2020.
Functionality
Face masks became the unrivaled accessory of the year. People made their own, brands produced unique designs and, almost overnight, they became the finishing touch to many outfits.

Some labels went a step further by marketing new accessories — and in some cases, entire clothing lines — as having antimicrobial properties. While experts say it is difficult to assess whether antimicrobial treatments can protect wearers from Covid-19, the concept of protective fashion is itself a defining trend. We also saw high-fashion riffs on the idea, including Kenzo’s fetching beekeeper-inspired looks presented during Paris Fashion Week in September.
Comfort
Fashion platform Lyst looked at search data from over 100 million online shoppers and, in its annual report, found that Birkenstock clogs, Crocs, UGG slippers and Nike joggers were among the year’s most sought-after items of clothing.

Reflecting a shift in both reality and mindset, loungewear replaced office attire, and floaty “house dresses” — comfortable enough to take you from home office to daybed — rose in popularity. The term “cottagecore,” an internet trend encapsulating the spirit of cozy, rustic living, generated huge buzz as TikTok users showed off their attempts to channel the aesthetic at home.
Pop culture, of course, helped underscore these trends. BTS’ music video for “Life Goes On” showed the boyband in matching pajamas, playing video games and staring wistfully out of windows. Oh, to be a young, rich, self-isolating idol.

Statements
Statement-wear took on an entirely new meaning in 2020. From protest T-shirts in support of the Black Lives Matter movement to political merchandise in the lead up to the US election, people dressed not to impress, but to convey powerful messages.

According to Lyst data, searches for terms including “vote” were up 29% week-on-week in the US the month before the presidential election. And when When Michelle Obama wore her now famous “VOTE” necklace, designed by Chari Cuthbert, demand for the item skyrocketed.
Pre-election, Instagram was awash with celebrities posting selfies in hot pink power suits thanks to a campaign launched by workwear brand Argent and advocacy group Supermajority, encouraging women to exercise their voting power and further bolstering the power of pink to signal strength and female solidarity.
Whether intentional or not, Savannah Guthrie’s choice of pink suit (not by Argent) to interview President Trump during the NBC town hall did not go unnoticed.

Conscious
Growing demand for local, handmade, sustainable clothing isn’t a new trend. But the pandemic saw a rise in values-driven shopping, reflecting a shift in mindset among more prudent spenders, who, perhaps, also had more time to think about the brands they lent their loyalty to.
In a report issued in April, Lyst noted a 69% increase in searches for “vegan leather,” year-on-year.
In Nigeria, Akerele said that sourcing materials internationally became challenging, so designers and the wider community were incentivized to build more vertically integrated businesses. This, she said, reduced the industry’s carbon footprint: “It’s helped reduce waste in the system in a way that only sourcing locally on demand can; and empowered our community of artisans, craftsmen and local supply chains by generating income for them in the midst of inflation.”
Vasudev said that, in India, she noticed two shifts in behavior, both benefiting local artisans: “One was the overwhelming response to artisans selling directly online (aided of course by NGOs and crafts collectives). Two, a number of artisan funds and charities went up,” she said. “Indian consumers went out of their way to support the ‘karigars’ (artisans). By buying, donating, by prioritizing Made in India.”
Digital
From Shanghai to London, fashion weeks throughout the year went digital to present new collections safely. During London Fashion Week in September, Burberry streamed its show — filmed live in the woods — on Twitch, a social media platform more popular with gamers than fashionistas. Later that month in Milan, Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott swapped models for marionettes, cleverly presenting a micro-sized version of his collection in a video that embraced the absurdity of the moment.
Fashion designer stages show with puppets
Months before in May, Congolese designer Anifa Mvuemba, founder of the label Hanifa, streamed a mesmerizing 3D collection of her latest designs on invisible models. The innovative idea went viral, racking up millions of views on Instagram.
While e-commerce has been growing in popularity for years, the luxury fashion sector has, historically, been slow to embrace its digital future. The industry’s common gripes are about the loss of the physical luxury experiences like walking into a beautifully designed store, flipping through the pages of a glossy magazine or attending exclusive fashion shows.
While these attitudes were slowly changing before the pandemic, this year has drastically accelerated the shift to online. According to the aforementioned McKinsey report, we have “vaulted five years forward in consumer and business adoption of digital in a matter of months.”
Grégory Boutté, chief client and digital officer for Kering (which owns Gucci and Saint Laurent, among other brands), spoke to the Business of Fashion in December, telling the title: “Our e-commerce revenue during the first half of 2020 went from 6 percent to 13 percent of overall retail revenues year-over-year. In North America we were as high as 26 percent e-commerce — so already ahead of the 20 percent McKinsey expected for 2025.” He noted that he expects these gains to normalize, given these numbers reflect the fact that the businesses brick-and-mortar stores were closed for large parts of the year, leaving buyers with no option but to shop online.
The future
Fashion’s recovery from the pandemic is set to be slow, with experts predicting a difficult year ahead for businesses. Trends seen during a year defined by crisis will not be left at 2021’s door, and they may permanently change the shape of the industry.
Some of these changes are positive and, when it comes to questions of inclusion and sustainability, long overdue. This year may have also accelerated fashion’s compulsion to look ahead in search of a brighter future. This is, after all, an industry filled with dreamers.

Bohan Qiu, founder of Shanghai-based creative and communication agency Boh Project, said he can already see more exuberant fashion displays emerging in China as the country returns to some semblance of normalcy. “I feel like people are actually going more vibrant, more experimental, more interesting rather than going more conservative,” he said via voice message. “And you can really see on the streets or at parties or at events in China, or at shopping malls, all the brands are displaying really colorful patterns, prints and embellishments. I feel like that’s really coming back, it’s like we’re celebrating.”

How To Look Cool In A Heatwave: Buy A Madras Shirt
https://fashion-trendin.com/how-to-look-cool-in-a-heatwave-buy-a-madras-shirt-2/
How To Look Cool In A Heatwave: Buy A Madras Shirt
Question: When is a check shirt much more than just any old check shirt? Answer: When it’s a traditional Madras shirt – as timeless and iconic as the style gets, and a summer wardrobe staple for men in the know.
Madras is a lightweight cotton that’s perfect for the type of shirt you need when it’s hot outside and you want to look cool. Yet there’s also a genuine art and history to the Madras shirt.
“Madras fabric is the eponymous cloth traditionally made in Madras [now called Chennai], India,” says Paul Simons, son and business partner of legendary London menswear designer John Simons. “It’s a loosely woven pure cotton that is traditionally dyed in a plethora of muted – and some not so muted – check patterns.
“It’s characteristically soft and lightweight, which lends itself perfectly to the button down shirt, creating an easy-to-wear and extremely comfortable summer shirt. It was particularly popular in the Ivy League style of 1960s USA.”
Like a lot of menswear classics, the Madras shirt was popular around the middle of the 20th century. It’s pure Americana, but is a little unfairly associated with US tourists. It was also worn by mods in 1960s Britain and suedeheads in the 1970s, although you could never call it counter-culture. Worn correctly, however, it’s proof that the much-derided short-sleeve shirt should have a permanent spot in your wardrobe.
“It would definitely be seen as a casual shirt,” says Simons. “But these days, just wearing a shirt can be seen as smart. The shirt itself should have unlinked collar and cuffs to give it that perfect relaxed feel. Personally, I like to wear them untucked with plain shorts, tucked in an opened collar with a pair of jeans, or even with a knitted tie.”
The Best Brands For Madras Shirts
Ralph Lauren
Madras might be a traditionally Indian cloth, but Ralph Lauren is a cornerstone of modern US culture – a brand that exudes wealth, corporate success, and fine American living. It’s also standard issue for anyone who likes preppy fashion, so of course it does a good line in Madras shirts. Colourful and extremely well made, these shirts prove that being square might be hip after all.

John Simons
John Simons was one of the top menswear designers in 1960s London – the man who kitted out the mods and suedeheads. The business started back in the 1950s, importing Ivy League-style clothes from the US and adding a British twist. With a store in Marylebone, London, the Paul Simons look is still going strong – a style that’s both defined generations and transcended them. Authentic Madras shirts have always been a key part of the collections, such as this long-sleeved blue and yellow check made (as with all Paul Simons Madras shirts) in India from genuine Madras fabric.

J.Crew
Much like Ralph Lauren, J.Crew is another American staple – an accessible, lower-cost brand with high fashion aspirations and styling. At the forefront of the growing menswear industry, J. Crew has been a proponent of the ever-popular urban lumberjack look – all checked shirts, denim, and big hipster beards – which makes the brand a natural fit for Madras shirts, too. J.Crew’s version is traditionally made in India, with a relaxed fit through the body and sleeves, and exclusive plaid patterns.

Abercombie & Fitch
These days, you don’t need to be a super-shredded college jock to shop at Abercombie & Fitch. The brand goes back almost 130 years, beginning life as a sports goods store then becoming the place for preppy youth style. But A&F has been undergoing another change in recent years, harking back to its sporting history to redefine its public image. A&F worked alongside Chennai artisans to produce its Madras range, which has a range of colourways. Our pick is this deep maroon check – a look that will work for both summer and autumn.
Buy Now: £58.00
Gant
The Sweden-based fashion label dates all the way back to the early 1900s. Origibally based in the US, it was a staple of the midcentury Ivy League look and still produces clothes based on that old school Americana. It’s also known for popularising the button down shirt. Unsurprisingly, this indigo Madras shirt is a no-nonsense classic, described as an ‘American sportswear icon’ – the kind that fits both a smart or casual outfit.
Buy Now: £42.50
Jacamo
Jacamo’s promise is to make clothes shopping easy, particularly for men who struggle to find well-fitting clothes in regular high street retailers. So thank the tailoring gods for Jacamo, because shopping for bigger sizes is an unnecessarily arduous chore – something most big-name brands still haven’t caught up with. True to form, its mishmash Madras shirt comes in a range of sizes – from small to 5XL – but most important is the brand’s electric designs.
Buy Now: £32.50
Gap
You know where are with the Gap – clothes that look good on just about everyone and stores that have something for almost any taste. And if you’re after a good-looking, well-made, and (most importantly – affordable) checked shirt, then Gap is the place to go. It’s no surprise that the American mainstay is a reliable place for Madras designs. There are several available, including this smart short-sleeved edition with a burgundy and green check.
Buy Now: £19.99
Beams
Established in 1976, Beams is a big name retailer and clothing brand in its native Japan. It’s known for doing the basics well – mid-level premium clothes in a smart-casual style. This Madras shirt is part of the Beams Plus range, a rugged and masculine look based on heritage and workwear-style clothing. A pop-over shirt that’s more a Madras style than authentically Indian-made (because it’s Japanese-made, of course), it has the distinct vintage, worn-in feel of the Beams Plus range.
Buy Now: £105.00
Drake’s
Not necessarily a household name, but Drake’s has a prestigious history of creating high-end, high ticket menswear. Tired of ironing taking up your valuable time? A professional ironing service in your area
We are certain that smartly ironed garments are compulsory in every sphere of life. If ironing must be done, why not get it done well by the experts? Doorstep-free services to collect and deliver, perhaps on the same day, make it very convenient. You do not go out to them, but they come to you via the app. Communication happens in minutes! A professional ironing service near me is just what every family and business requires. The committed and reliable service does much more than ironing. Washing and dry cleaning, dress alterations, and shoe repairs at the same venue take care of the entire personality from head to toe.
Take a break with ironing services in London
Those busy with lots of ironing must be breaking their heads over it. Like it or detest it, a large family will need hours of ironing, perhaps once a week. Even then, the dresses may not look good. Sharp creases, fresh looks, and an attractive fragrance make good impressions in professional settings. No wonder so many perfumes are required, which keeps the industry busy. While it is easy to press a few garments, doing it all the time makes labels bothersome. Very busy lives only result in frustration with too many tasks to get done at home or in the office amidst limited time.
Workwear and uniforms need the most frequent washing and ironing, and dry cleaning for those fabrics that need gentle care. Care Labels on the dresses specify how they should be cleaned and the right temperature for pressing. Don’t forget that delicate dresses can quickly spoil with rough ironing. Doing it in a hurry leads to such dangers of overlooking the gentle fabric requirements. A cloth layer protects the vulnerable fabrics from heat. Damp cloth irons are better. Whether steam has to be used is one of the questions. more,
Avail of customer-friendly ironing service prices
With all the advantages, ironing costs are low and that is something to smile about. Get more for less by bundling up a large number of items. The more, the better, just like the shopping cart. The longer you travel, the less you pay. The entire range of small and large items is worthy of ironing. Regular cleaning and ironing are essential to maintaining health and hygiene. They help preserve and prolong the life of garments.
Shirts and trousers, blouses and gowns may be everywhere, but there are so many more. Coats and jackets, according to the season, need more attention and effort. Bed linen and blankets, curtains, and table covers are important too. The smaller things, like towels and napkins, in business life assume great significance.
Professionalism is what the world seeks and rewards all the time like in corporate life. Every service can be delivered with grace through experience and expertise. The efficient, timely, warm, and friendly ironing service does make a visible difference since everybody represents the vibrant culture. Having developed ironing into fine art through the years, each dress looks shapely and robust, ready to fight a battle all day long out on the site or within office spaces.
Get in touch with the ironing service Birmingham
Many factors matter like locations and distances from the services but the apps have shortened time and space. Work out a convenient schedule of pickups and deliveries, and hopefully, the slots will be available. Isn’t it remarkable how time mysteriously opens up once the ironing task is delegated elsewhere? Besides, everything suits the clients, the affordable prices, the ironing benefits, and a culture of grace and discipline. Feeling and looking good is certain, with the bonus of good health and hygiene that the heat produces by killing germs.
Travel to the ends of the earth to the most wonderful locations and ironing is probably everywhere in large doses. A few exotic cultures on remote islands may not have caught on to the ironing advantages and may soon learn how essential it is to a meaningful life. Enjoy greater benefits by combining washing or dry cleaning with ironing in a neat package that costs much less.
Get friendly with an ironing service near me
Mutual give and take characterises the best businesses the world over. So it has been one of the most essential aspects of the modern lifestyle. Almost every dress requires magical and mysterious iron in whatever form, with steam perhaps at controlled heating. Look at the range of fancy ironing devices to get an idea of the possibilities. Those who like ironing could give it a try with the most intimate dresses, perhaps. Chances are that regular ironing for the family or office staff would become too tedious and filled with dangers of damage.
Is somebody ironing clothes near me?
Prime Laundry Ironing services alone are available, which is a reminder of how important it is. Forget the associated services for a moment to ponder ironing and how to get it done without a fuss. Enjoy the splendour of sharp creases and fragrant aromas in the corporate or social world, and spice up the wardrobe for greater conquests.

Hawes & Curtis
This is an example of the 2016 spring “back to business” lookbook. From looking at these images it is very clear to see that Hawes & Curtis target market is for business men and woman. They have included captions such as “let’s talk business” alongside images of models dressed very smartly and ready for work in the Shard building in London. By shooting in the shard shows the consumers the English Herritage of the brand. Another caption used is “understated elegance is always in style” this suggests that the brand want to keep stylish as they market their clothing to young professionals working in the city/ have a corporate job. The shirts are paired with pencil skirts and wide leg trousers that look very professional and work related. (They are not in fact Hawes & Curtis). This lookbook is obviously very successful as it extremely relates to the brand aestchetic of smart workwear so it obviously very much relates to the target customer. From looking at this lookbook I feel it would work extremely well when rebranding this brand to style the shirts differently and give this brand a differenly outlook. For example, by styling the shirts with leather jeans/ denim jeans/ leather jackets would completely revamp this brand into a cool, trendy and young brand. It still wouldnt entirely change the target market as it could still potentially relate to the young professionals this brand sells to. I will further research ways to do this and brands that style shirts in a trendy way to get inspiration for planning this shoot.

How To Not Look Boring At Work – Part 2: Business-Casual

#LosAngelesInternationalAirport", "#LosAngeles", "#DanStevens", "#JamesMarsden", "#BlackTie", "#DavidGandy", "#BeverlyHillsCalifornia", "#FashionWeek", "#LarryKing", "#London", "#ScreenActorsGuild #http://blog.hair-terminator.com If our recent guide on how to not look boring at work proved anything – aside from the power of chambray shirts and the importance of owning a good pen – it’s just how easy it can be to fall into a style rut, particularly in a corporate environment. However, it isn’t just those that do 9-to-5 hours in 9-by-5 cubicles for whom the style light bulb can stop flickering. Work place dress codes, much like the rules of menswear themselves, have been relaxing for several years now. This means that outfit fatigue can even extend to open-planned-desk-share-cum-ping-pong-breakout-space companies. (Related: 8 Of The Coolest Style HQs In The World) And so we got to work immediately – and smart-casually – on a follow-up that was more tailored (or should we say less tailored) to these environments. Here’s How To Not Look Boring At Work – Part 2: Business-Casual edition.
Restructure Your Officewear
Sure, a blazer worn as a separate is less formal than a full suit. However, keep in mind that a double-breasted, gold-buttoned number is still way too stuffy for smart-casual. Aim for something more relaxed: unstructured, that is, with little or no padding in the shoulder. A slightly shorter length also reads more casual, not to mention contemporary. Italian brands such as Boglioli, Barena and Aspesi have this game on lock, but you can find solid examples at the premium end of the high street with the likes of Reiss and J.Crew. (Related: The 5 Best Places To Buy A Blazer On The High Street) A good unstructured blazer is so soft – made from pliable materials like boiled or Merino wool – that it’s practically a cardigan, and indeed some versions are knitted, or even in jersey. They’re more casual still, but nevertheless smarter than a hoodie. Take note, Zuckerberg.
Key Pieces
Jack In Your Jacket
If even the most relaxed form of tailoring feels too uptight, a shawl-collar cardigan is a viable business-casual alternative. Just avoid chunky ribbing, outdoorsy toggles or folksy patterns – you are still there to work after all. (Related: How To Wear A Cardigan And Not Look Like Your Grandad) While it’s a different interpretation of ‘workwear’, a chore jacket is a little more like a blazer and therefore smarter than a denim jacket, which can also work, particularly if it’s a dark wash version and not distressed. With its connotations of and therefore uniform, a lightweight bomber can do double duty as a blazer. The key here is opting for a dark colour such as navy, in a less utilitarian fabric like wool, cotton or linen instead of the usual shiny nylon. Note: You might want to balance the casualness of these options out with a smarter button-up shirt rather than a T-shirt, and trousers or chinos instead of jeans.
Key Pieces
Be A Team Player
Nothing screams ‘catalogue model’ like a V-neck jumper and an open-collared shirt. A crew-neck style is eminently more modern and sportier. Besides, you don’t need space for a tie. You can even play up the sportswear vibes with a knit that copies the traditional ‘V’ stitched at the collar of a sweatshirt. Or, provided that it’s slim enough, sub an actual jersey sweat for a knit to make your blazer and chinos feel more jock than nerd. On a similar note, you could also deploy a knitted bomber or zip-up track top. The fabric makes them feel more refined and therefore more formal, while the /athletic silhouette and hardware gives them – and you – just that little bit of an edge.
Key Pieces
Dress Down Everyday
In the same way that a rigidly tailored blazer is smart-casual overkill, a stiff-collared Jermyn Street shirt is too, well, stiff. A soft-collared button-down is a much better option, in a fabric such as Oxford rather than shiny poplin. (Related: 8 Ways To Wear An Oxford Shirt) Again, button-down shirts can look a little bit too stock photo; swapping Oxford cloth for chambray or denim adds a touch of ranch-hand roughness, and visual interest. A grandad or collarless shirt meanwhile looks modern, and not like you forgot your tie. Either way, ensure that your shirt’s tails aren’t too long if you want to wear it untucked. Falling between a shirt and a T-shirt, a polo is another solid alternative, especially if it’s long-sleeved and in a more premium fabric such as merino wool. This can also be worn under a blazer as an alternative to a traditional button-down. Then there’s the most casual of smart-casual options – a T-shirt. Finding the right kind to wear with a blazer can be tricky: suitable quality, neither too thick nor too sheer and with a neckline that’s more undershirt than Geordie Shore. If in doubt, stock up on Uniqlo’s excellent, yet affordable, Supima cotton versions.
Key Pieces
Slack Off (Or On)
The constituent parts of a smart-casual outfit (and the parts of those parts) are like the levels on a DJ’s mixing console. If some are turned right up, then the others should be dialled down to balance everything out – but not so far that they’re out of harmony. For example, if you’re wearing a blazer, shirt and brogues – tailored trousers might tip the balance too far in the direction of smart. Whereas if you’re wearing a bomber, T-shirt and trainers – tailored trousers can prevent you looking too casual. Swapping the shirt with a T-shirt, or the brogues with trainers, will also adjust the levels. (Related: 4 Essential Smart-Casual Pieces) In terms of separate tailored trousers, exercise caution with any material that’s too thin or shiny. Something beefier, more textured and less suit-like will lend itself more naturally to being worn with casual pieces and fabrics, such as denim. In between trousers and jeans, there’s the smart-casual chino. A flat front and roll-ups skew more casual; pleats and creases, smarter. Tapering will prevent them looking too dad-like. And thanks to the athleisure revolution, you can now get trousers and chinos with a jogger-style drawstring waist, making them more casual, contemporary and comfortable. These look best with an untucked shirt, polo or T-shirt. On the other side of the athleisure coin, you can get dressier joggers that are more like trousers with a tailored waistband, no cuff at the ankle and even pleats or creases. But unless your game is tight, and your office dress code lax, play it safe with some actual trousers. (Related: 6 Trouser Styles You Should Consider)
Work Some Workwear
Jeans sit firmly at the casual end of the legwear spectrum, but they’re not beyond the pale in a smart-casual workplace – so long as they’re dark (which makes them smarter) and not distressed (ditto). Most style guides will typically tell you to buy dark blue jeans, preferably in unwashed selvedge denim. They’re not wrong, but blue can sometimes be a bit too sensible. Black is smarter because the stitching and rivets are usually tonal, but they are simultaneously more rock ‘n’ roll. Black and navy is also a surprisingly sophisticated colour combination. Avoid jeans with too much extraneous detailing and stay off the ripped knee bandwagon; a clean, modern pair will fit more seamlessly into your minimalist, normcore uniform. As with chinos, turn-ups will make any jean, and indeed outfit, instantly more casual. (Related: Buy Better Jeans With The 6 Cs Of Denim)
Check The Footsie Index
It’s often the case that the smoother, shinier and sleeker the shoe, the smarter it is, and vice versa. Brogues will therefore put you on a solid, smart-casual footing, but a chunky Derby can look more contemporary, and carries a hint of Dr. Martens attitude. (Related: The 5 Most Versatile Leather Shoes A Man Can Own) Like T-shirts, trainers can be tricky in a smart-casual context. Helpfully, like with joggers, there are more and more ‘dress’ trainers nowadays: usually combining a dark leather upper with a white sole. White sneakers can look smart, but only if they’re clean – in both a not being dirty as well as minimal sense. As with any shoe, the other consideration is sleekness. Trainers are already inherently casual, so while you can get away with a chunky dress shoe, a high-top will be way too informal. Styles with minimal branding and stitching (which can quickly discolour) toe the smart-casual line (or hyphen) perfectly.
Pack Up
A soft leather briefcase, as described in part one of this guide, could work with any of the above looks. However, where a backpack might be too junior in a formal office, in a smart-casual workplace it’ll look more on-message than a messenger bag. Get a grown-up one in a dark colour, perhaps in leather to make it feel smarter, and with some decent hardware (i.e. sturdy zips). If you’re a man who has to flip-flop between the smart and casual sides of smart-casual, a growing number of brands are offering hybrid carriers than can switch between different styles, or look for a bag that can be carried by a top handle to appear more like a briefcase or tote bag. (Related: 10 Of The Most Versatile Men’s Bags)
Clock On
A handsome watch with a metal bracelet will elevate the most dressed-down ensemble – even T-shirt and jeans. Not only is it sportier and therefore more casual than a leather strap, but the sheer expanse of shiny metal gives your informal getup some much-needed sheen. Equally, you could try a Milanese mesh strap, which sits somewhere between a bracelet and leather strap in smartness, and will have a similar effect. No matter if your wrist candy is just quartz.
