Nicest Kids In Town
~Chapter 6~ As Sandra gained her detention for the day, this time for her hair being...rather larger than life, she gazed out of the dirty windows in the dimly lit hallways. She never did understand why blacks were seen as 'inferior' and whites were supposedly better. Heck. She could think of a few great examples where that logic fell through, but that was neither here nor there. When she finally reached the detention room, down the hall where the 'assistant principle's' office was, she heard a rather familiar voice.
"Yes do you know where I might find her?" A smooth, animated like voice echoed against the walls. Saucy's eyes grew to the size of dinner saucers, Corny! She couldn't believe he was here...why was he here?! Her hair had been picked to perfection yet she could not shake the feeling of embarrassment she was developing. Not embarrassed of her afro, that was never the case, embarrassed because she knew it was seen as unkept so people would stare. That. That is what she was embarrassed about. She quickly ducked into the detention room, her back against the door as her chest heaved with...joy? Excitement? Fear? She couldn't pinpoint it exactly but if she had to pick, it might be all three. "Why you all shaken up Saucy?" Her big headed little brother chuckled as he grooved to the jams on the radio. She shook her head, taking her seat at the "teacher's" desk. She tapped her nail along with the instruments.
"Sandra?" The melodic voice traveled to her ears causing her head to the door, seeing...Corny. "Mr.Co- Corny." She stood up from her seat, dusting her her dress off, "What brings you here? Oh you must be looking for Amber or Tracey, they are on the other side of the-" He quickly shakes his head, "No no, I'm actually here for you. I wanted to talk to you but I couldn't wait until the show. I hope that's alright." He grabbed her hand, looking into her eyes
Sandra couldn't believe it. He actually wanted to see her. "Well I- I don't mind at all, what is it that you need from me?" The man started but in walked Link Larkin and Tracey Turnblad, having their own little conversation. "You didn't have to do that, Link." He shrugged his shoulders as if it wasn't a big deal, "Hey, no prob." He surveyed the room, watching all of the teenagers dance and jive to the tunes, "Besides, looks like a cool scene down here." Saucy decided to hold off on the conversation and slowly but surely, let go of the man in front of her, walking over to Tracey and embracing her, "Hey Trace, I'm startin' to think you like coming to see us in here." They both giggled in sync and broke the hug. The bell rang and Seaweed, with Penny right behind him, "Listen, man, you ain't gotta stop now." As he spoke, Saucy made her way back to Corny, "How about you come with us? My ma is having a little get together at the store, I don't think she'd mind." A smile grew across his face accompanied with a nod, "I'd appreciate that very much Ms.Stubbs." Corny grabbed the eldest Stubbs' hand, laying a gentle kiss on the back of it.
Apparently, as Saucy was getting her groove on with Mr.Collins, Link, Penny, and Tracey had also been invited to this funky shindig, but if anything Link was worried about their neighborhood. Penny and Tracey on the other had were elated!
"I've never been to North Avenue before," Link scratched the back of his neck nervously, "Uh, well, would it be safe?" Sandra couldn't help but chuckle at him, she wondered if he knew that's how they felt everyday. Seaweed looked over at his sister, looking Corny up and down before smirking, "San, tell cracker boy to calm down. He ain't got nothin' to worry about." Saucy walked over to the blue vest wearing boy and pat him on the shoulder, "It's all cool, y'all will be just fine."
Right next to them, Penny made her way towards Tracey, a wide grin plastered across her doll like cheeks, "Wow! Being invited places by colored people!" The black and white haired girl reciprocated her friends emotions, "It feels so hip!" They squealed in excitement while Saucy and Seaweed gave each other a look as if they were communicating to one another. The boy started, "I'm glad y'all feel that way," His sister wrapped an arm around his shoulder, "'Cause, uh, not many people do, y'all know what I'm sayin'?" She turned her head around to her peers, the people she's know since childhood. Each and everyone of them were different, her brother included, yet to white people they were one in the same.
They all lifted their heads or nodded along, a strew of, "Yeah that's right." "Mhm!" "Don't we know it"'s rang through the class room. Saucy shook her head, turning back to their caucasian counter parts as her brother began, "Heeeeeeey! I can't see why people look at me and only see the color of my face!" Saucy nodded along with him patting him on the shoulder while stepping in front of him then extending her pointer finger up to the air, "Ah yeah, and then there's those who try to help God knows, but always have to put me in my place." She slid next to her brother so they could both address the group, "But we won't ask you to be color blind," They began to shuffle along the floor, feet tapping rhythmically. Sandra didn't notice it yet, but Corny's eyes hadn't let her since she began talking, how could he? The girl was just so..enchanting, but he also knew her and her brother's word were true. "Cause if you pick up the fruit child, you're sure to fiiiind." "The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice." Seaweed leaned his head on Saucy's shoulder in a playful manner, as if he wasn't speaking the truth, "I could say it ain't so but darlin' what's the use?"
Saucy jokingly pushed Seaweed off of her, now finally making eye contact with Corny, "The darker the chocolate, the richer the taste." She left him with a wink before returning to her sibling as the spoke together, "And that's where it's at! Now baby run and teeell that." The students behind the waved at them like church mothers do at the end of a Sunday server, "Run and tell that!" The began walking out of the class room because they knew in fact this conversation was going to take them longer than they had, "Hey, yeaaaah!" Seaweed strutted down the hallway, knowing that no one but the janitors was here. "I can't see why people disagree, Each time I tell em' what I know is true, oh no," Saucy turned around, grabbing Corny's hand, pulling him along with her as her brother broke in once again, "And if you come and se the world I'm from, I bet your heart is gonna feel it tooooo!"
Tracey began shimmying along with Seaweed while Link and Penny stood back, taking in all of the information being given to them.
Seaweed, turned to face Trace, his new found friend of many differences, yet she did not view him any different than her. "I could lie but baby, let's be bold, vanilla can be nice but if the truth be told!"
Saucy broke away from Corny, her brother embracing his sister as she addressed everyone, "Blacker the berry! The sweeter the juice!" The children began running out of the double doors, out to the "grassy" area where the bus came to pick them and Saucy began to shuffle in the grass, "I could say it ain't so but darlin', what's the use?" The Stubbs boy had made his way over to the slightly taller red haired girl, gazing up at her with a look all too familiar to Saucy, "The darker the chocolate, the richer the taste!" Saucy rolled her eyes, grabbing her brother by the collar, yanking him back towards her. Not because she disapproved of what he was doing, heck, she was on the same boat as him, but she didn't what him to get hurt, like she was fixin' to do. "And that's where it's at! Oh baby, baby, run and teeeelll that." Once again, the response was echoed amongst the teens who pranced around, right along with Saucy and Seaweed.
Finally they had arrived to the bus stop waiting patiently, still engaging in such a riveting conversation, in Sandra's opinion. From her peripheral vision, a brown skinned girl bouncing over to the two of them, the youngest Stubbs sibling. In the back ground, Amber Von Tussle could be heard yelling, "Link! Link Larkin!" Yet it was not acknowledged, not even by Link himself.
"Oh y'all this is our sister, Little Inez, say hey baby." Sandra kissed her sister on the top of her head, smoothing out her bangs then letting her go. "Mr.Collins? What are you- Hey! I know Tracey Turnblad! Good for you girl you got on the show!" Seaweed patted her on the back as Tracey pipped up, "Well you better be next!" Inez's head got a little higher as she thought about it, Saucy knew that she'd been dreaming of the day she could dance for a real audience, she just hoped she'd be there to see it.
"Ya got that right!" Seaweed broke in and ushered everyone to back up, all but Saucy moved because she knew exactly what was about to happen and she couldn't help but jump in. "You better show em' girl!" The eldest sibling got into ready stance, waiting for her sister to lead the way as the other began to form in the back of them.
"I'm tired of coverin' up all my pride!" Inez began to move in a way, not even Tracey had seen before, she was amazed! "So give me five on the black hand side!" "I got a new way of movin' and I got my own voice!" "So how can I help but to shout and rejoice!" Inez grabbed her siblings' hands, bouncing about like a rubber ball that had been shot out of a football stadium, passionately speaking, "Oh the people 'round here can barely pay their rent! Then try to make a dollar outta, fifteen cents!" The bus had pulled up and opened its doors, all of them including Link, Tracey, Penny, and Corny hopped on, intently listening to the young girl, "But we got a spirit money just can't buy, It's deep as a river and soars to the sky, to the sky!" They hadn't even taken their seats because of how excited they all were. Saucy help onto the chair back, stabling herself as she made eye-contact with suit wearing man in front of her, "Hey! I can't see the reason it can't be the kinda world where we all get our chance!"
"The time is now! So we can show 'em how, so turn the music up and let's all dance! " In this moment, Sandra took this opportunity to sit neck to Corny, her hand now on top of his and a soft grin on her face, "Cause all things are equal when it comes to love." Seaweed's hand came down on his sister's shoulder, startling her as his head came between her and the slick haired man next to her, "Well that ain't quiet true, when push comes to shove!" "The black the berry! The sweeter the juice! They say it so but darlin' what's the use. The darker the chocolate, The richer the taste!"
Seaweed grooved his way towards Penny, gyrating and shimmying in all the right ways that caught her attention. "And that's where it's at! Now baby, baby, baby, run and telllll that!" ~As the bus went through the suburban neighborhood, the scenery began to change significantly from wide houses, to tall apartment buildings that look like they have been in use for a while. Men, women, children, heck even dogs were out on the streets, dancing, singing, laughing, or just having a grand ol' time~ One by one they all filed out, some going home, some prancing to the store, others staying right there. As Seaweed hoped out of the bus, he gave Johnny some skin and began making his way to Penny Pingleton. Slowly, he took her blowpop out of her mouth, winking at her and putting a two fingered kiss on her lips as she fell back from excitement. Tracey and Link looked at one another before quickly rushing to her aide.

Summary: Reader has a date with Collin but she and her son are sick with a cold.
Word Count: 1,162
I hope you like it, Anon!
You felt terrible the entire day, when you woke up this morning you knew you didn’t feel good but you decided to push past it. It was Friday, you could rest the entire weekend. Then you get a call from the daycare center that your son, Zan, had a fever. Not being able to leave work you had your mom pick him up. You had just placed the sleeping toddler in the car seat, turning back to look at your Mom, tiredness evident on your face.
“You sure you okay? You look like shit,” Your mom frowned
“Thanks, Mom.” You mumbled getting into your car.
“I mean, you look like you’re sick too.”
“I think I have whatever Zan has, how was he?”
“He’s been sleeping most of the day. Doesn’t have much of an appetite and he still has a fever.”
“Do you mind watching him later? I have a date with Collin.”
“A date? You should cancel, you don’t feel good either.”
“I’ll be fine, I just need some medicine.” You pressed
“Alright, whatever you say. I’ll be over around 6:30, is that okay?”
“Yeah, thanks again for picking him up for me.”
“No problem, sweetie. I’ll see you later text me when you get home.”
“I will.”
After leaving your parents' house, you took Zan back home and gave him some soup and medicine. Now you were laying on your bed trying to get a quick nap in before your date with Collin. You closed your eyes, you only needed a few minutes.
You jolted awake, you looked around your room and saw it was dark outside. Still dressed in your work clothes, you frantically searched for your phone, you saw that one, you had five missed calls from Collin and that it was now 9:00. at night. You cursed under your breath, you meant to set an alarm but it must’ve slipped your mind. Collin must think you’re an awful person for standing him up, the two of you have only been seeing each other for a couple of months.
You called Collin, hoping he wouldn’t be too upset to answer. Then you heard his phone going off, before you could investigate your bedroom door opened and there was Collin, with a tray of soup and grilled cheese in hand.
“Hey,” Collin said giving you a meek smile
“Hey, um, how did you get in here?”
“Your Mom let me in.” He smiled,
“My Mom? Wait, you met my Mom?” You questioned,
“Uh yeah, I called you when I got here so you could buzz me in. Your mom was already here so she let me up.”
“My mom’s here? Where’s Zan, is he okay?” You asked trying to get out of bed. Collin was quick to your side urging you to stay in bed. He placed the tray on your dresser and sat next to you on the bed.
“Hey, he’s good. Your mom fed him and gave him a bath. I laid him down he’s sleep.”
“You put him to sleep?”
“Yeah, I let your Mom go home, it was getting late.” You smiled softly.
“Thank you, Collin and I’m sorry for missing our date.”
“You ain’t gotta apologize. Now, I laid some clothes out for you in the bathroom. Take a shower, get changed and I’ll feed you some soup.”
“Oh, what else you gonna feed me?” You teased making Collin blush you chuckled kissing his cheek. “I’ll be back.”
After your much-needed shower and checking on Zan, you and Collin cuddled in your bed while watching reruns of The Parkers.
“You know they really messed up the ending of this show,” Collin commented “I mean that bum ass professor gonna be rude as fuck to Nikki and then all of a sudden he show up at her wedding and then boom, she love him again.”
“Ain’t it fucked up? I swear that episode made me so mad. Then she had like these fine ass niggas and would drop them for the Professor corny ass? Get the fuck out of here”
“That’s what I’m sayin’!”
“But, The Parkers is better than Moesha, it was the fatphobia for me and Moesha is a fucked up friend.”
“And her dad ain’t shit either.” You sighed annoyed as you scratched your head, you’ve been wearing these braids for almost a month. It was definitely time to take them out.
“Do you want to take them out for you?”
“Huh?”
“Let me take your braids out, I know your scalp be itchin,”
“Collin, you don’t have to do that.”
“I know, but I want to.”
“Fine, I’ll be back.”
“You know, this ain’t what I imagined when I think about us in bed.” You were leaning against Collin’s chest, he had finished taking your braids out and now you were just cuddling one another.
“You lucky your ass in here, I don’t let just anybody in here.”
“Oh, I would’ve been in here,” Collin said cockily
“Oh really?”
“Well, I’m pretty irresistible.” Collin chuckled, you rolled your eyes and playfully hit his chest. The two of you felt Zan stir and froze your movements. Zan came in while Collin was taking out your hair. You gave him some more medicine let him stay until he fell asleep.
“Thank you for taking care of me and Zan, you really didn’t have to.”
“You’re welcome, you know I had to nurse your sick ass back to health.”
“You know what, you about to get put out.”
“Alright, I’m kidding.” Collin placed a kiss on your forehead “I can put little man to bed,”
“Thanks, Collin, but I’ll do it. You’ve helped plenty.” You gave Collin a quick kiss before picking up Zan and putting him in his room.
After you tucked him in, you turned to leave the room when Zan called out for you.
“Mommy,” He said tiredly
“Hey, baby,” You sat on the edge of his bed. “How you feeling?”
“Okay, Mr. Collin played with me while you were sleeping.”
“He did?”
“Yeah and then he read me two stories, I like when he reads stories to me.”
“What about me?”
“Uh, you’re good too Mommy, but he makes better voices.”
“So you just gonna kick Mommy to the curb?” You teased, tickling Zan’s feet
“Mommy! Stop tickling me!” He said in between laughs
“Alright, get some rest Zan, love you.”
“Love you too. Mommy,” You turned back around
“Can you turn off my night light?
“Turn it off?”
“Yeah, Mr. Collin scared away the monsters under the bed so I don’t need it anymore.”
“Okay, goodnight Zan.”
“Night Mommy,” You went back to your room and saw Collin was fast asleep. Feeling sleep starting to overcome you, you got in bed with him and snuggled up close to him. You drifted off to sleep thinking about the possibility of falling for the man next to you.

Nicest Kids In Town
~Chapter 7~ Saucy finally had time to break away from the group, mistakenly leaving Seaweed in charge of them all while she began to change. Her mother knocked on her door, a simper sprinkling over her cheeks, "When do you eva get all dolled up for the platter parties?" Ms.Maybelle took the liberty of freely stepping into her daughters room, looking at her from the mirror. Sandra didn't know how to convey to her mother the emotional turmoil she had been putting herself through. IT's not as if this "crush" was new founded, nay. During her younger years, i.e five years ago, she had become fascinated by the idea of Corny Collins, before she had actually formerly met him. This was prior to him being The Corny Collins and at the time he was just 'Corny' from the hit show, Leave It To Beaver'. Once she had even asked her mom if it had been possible for her to meet Corny because she had heard on the television that he was going to be at some gathering. Saucy was ecstatic! She couldn't fathom possibly receiving his signature. She wouldn't have shown it to anyone, it would be for her, her mind, and her soul.
Without a second thought her mother declined her offer, this was one of the first times they had the "White People" and "Black People". It was not as if she didn't realize that she was different, she just didn't think it mattered. While in deep though, a sharp and quick clack clack rang through her ears. Sandra's head turned towards her mother, who's face had been bestowed with a face mixed with confusion and another emotion she could not quite pin point. "Yes mama?" Her voice echoed through the room following a lull of silence. Maybelle's eyebrow cocked in suspicion before she began to back away. "Mm....neva mind." A small grin began to grow on her face as she approached the stairs.
Sandra exhaled with a breath she didn't know she was even hold, a hand laying against her chest. "Sandra?" Her mother's voice rang from the steps causing her head to turn, "Ma'am?" "You look beautiful." The blonde haired woman smiled as she descended the stairs. When Sandra was finally sure that her mother had gone, a burst of excitement ripped through her body. She hopped up and down with her make up brush in hand.
A beat could be heard starting up from the floor underneath her. She finished the final touches and sprayed her Coco Chanel on before prancing towards the stairs that led into the shop. ~~~DownStairs~~~~ Corny Collins was way in over his head right now. What was he doing here?! Seaweed could see the reservation on his face so he made small steps towards him, placing a hand on the Caucasian man's shoulder. "Hey man it's alright. We don't bite." The Stubbs boy laughed as his mother turned the music up, everyone wooping in response. "Yeah, well, well, oh, yeah-yeah Bring on that pecan pie." Motormouth Maybelle belted as the kids dipped and swayed against each other, soul just filling the room. From the corner of her eyes she could see a door crack open and a grayish blue fabric flowing around. "Pour some sugar on it, sugar, don't be shy Scoop me up a mess of that chocolate swirl Don't be stingy, I'm a growing girl." Corny and Link were smiling into oblivion until they say the greatness that was Sandra. Corny's mouth became agape at the walk of confident strides she took. Her head turned upward with a smile on her face as she made her way towards the group. "I offer big love with no apology How can I deny the world the most of me?" "Have y'all ate anything yet? My momma has a thing when people don't wanna eat in her home." A melody of her laughter filled the room under the music. With her statement Corny felt a yank of his arm, seeing the slightly shorter girl pull him towards the table that held rows and rows of delectable things. "I am not afraid to throw my weight around Pound by pound by pound."

Nicest Kids in Town
Chapter 5 (Note, there will be so..."freestyling.") ~Right after the show finished~ Saucy remained on her high note for hours and hours, everyone round her feeling her joy radiate from her very being. She strutted down her not so clean neighborhood streets, she watched cars pass with couples that filled her heart with excitement. She sighed contently and rested on someone's stoop, "Looking out on the morning rain."
She stood once more and dramatically laid against the brick railing, "I used to feel so uninspired." Her heart beat with ache and want, she knew that the feelings she felt for Corny was forbidden but it felt so right.
"And when I knew I had to face another day. Lord, it made me feel so tired." Her head spinning with emotions that she couldn't even describe anymore. Everything was so new to her but oh how much she longed to feel it three times more.
"Before the day I met you, Life was so unkind." Every moment of injustice that she faced before she went on the Corny Collins show flashed through her mind. The wind blew across her face, causing her to tear up. But the longer she thought the small. times that her and the host had interacted during her time there and how he made her feel so...seen.
"You're the key, To my piece of mind." She began walking up the street, her head held high, her chest out. One foot in front of the other, she glided across the concrete streets and her heels clacked ever so gently when she did. "'Cause you make me feel.You make me feel." A vision of Corny appeared in front of her and caressed her cheek, his eyes gazing into her own. "You make me feel. Like a natural woman." She placed her hand against his and rubbed her cheek against his hand. "You showed me, That sometimes. I don't need to stay. In my box, the one that was, 'handmade' for me!" Her hands slid against his chest to grip him by the collar softly.
"But then I met you! All you did was glance me! But I knew. That we were made for each other!" As the tempo of the song slowed, Corny's image began to fade leaving Sandra listening to the crickets of the night. "Sometimes," She wiped a rouge tear that had fallen in the mist of her watching the man of her dreams disappear. "The only way to live. Is to try. And try. And try and try and try...." Sandra exhaled with a deep breath that she didn't even know she was holding. "God how'd I get myself into this mess." As the music faded the vibrant colors that once surrounded her had dulled out and once again she was on the side of a mom and pop shop a block away from her own home. ~10 minutes later~ Saucy had regained her calm state of mind and walked back to her home, being met with a comfortable silence. She slowly stepped towards her room just waiting for the moment that she could dream of something unobtainable.
(Im so sorry y'all, but HERE IS THE CHAPTER. it looks short but that's because this is when welcome to the 60s is happening so not much goin on here) ~Chapter 6~

Nicest Kids In Town
~Chapter 4~
"Yeah! That was the dance of the week..." Corny Collins' voice faded into the back ground of the Stubbs household. The jump and yelling and running around had overpowered their small soap box tv, but they all heard what they needed to hear. "Ooooooh I knew she could do it!" Seaweed spun smooth as butter and slicked his hair back. "You knew? No no young man, I knew she could do it, from the minute she waltz up into detention." Inez would've like to join the family chat but she hasn't even been formally introduced to Tracy, so she stood next to her mother silently watching her siblings. Mama Maybelle stood right across from the, strutting her signature leopard moo-moo. "What are y'all goin' on about hm? Some girl- what do y'all mean detention?" She furrowed her eyebrows and her big blond hair maneuvered with each of head movements. Seaweed and Saucy hissed at the matter that they were attempting to keep from their mother. "Did I say detention? I-I meant....I- Oh Look Corny Collins!" She immediately flopped onto the couch, her afro bouncing on the way down. Seaweed sat next to her and crossed his legs, his hands going behind his head, "Very smooth sis, very smooth." He snickered and she cut her eyes at him, aggressively 'shush'ing him. "So Trace, cozy up to old Corny and tell us about yourself." Corny's arm wrapped around Tracy and Saucy couldn't help but imagine what she would do if that was her. She knew it was wishful thinking but her heart wouldn't stop beating at the thought of him and her, together. She tuned back into the tv just in time to hear Corny's next question and a jarring response from Tracy, "And if you were President Tracy, what would your first official act be?" Corny's eyebrow arched in a way that made Saucy smile like a bum who earned a dollar. "Hmm, I'd make every day Negro Day!" All jaws in the house dropped. Like a domino affect, Motor Mouth Maybelle, Saucy, Seaweed, and then Inez. "I'd read you like tomorrow's headline Tracy! What do you think kids, think we have a hot new candidate for Miss Teenage Hairspray?" After what felt like hours, Saucy cleared her throat and looked at her family. "I think I need to get some air y'all. I'll be back in a few minutes." She didn't even give her mother time to respond before she grabbed her jacket and made way out of the house.
The door behind her shut and she exhaled, leaning her head against it before walking down the stairs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (if you want skip to the better part, you know which part I mean)
"The new girl in town, Has the guy on a string! The new girl in town! Hey look she's wearin' his ring!" Saucy watched as the Dynamite meticulously sing and dance with every step...every step she planned. She loved the delivery they all gave and it disheartened her that she couldn't get in front of the camera herself. It's not that she was afraid, no no that wasn't the case. Sandra couldn't bear the thought of messing up in front of the camera so she kept her talent to herself- Her singing talent it is. ""I can't stop cryin' and so in my own tears I'm gonna drown! Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa!" Motor Mouth Maybelle nudged her daughter and smiled, her eyes pointing towards the 'Dynamites' in an encouraging way. Saucy simply shook her head and watched from afar, leaning on the table in front of her. "Cause he wants to rendezvous with the new girl. We're kinda sad and blue, yes it's true girl. We'd like to say *beat beat* to the New girl in town." Saucy quickly looked over to the band, knowing this was the part in rehearsal where they all messed up. But much to her surprise, they went right into the upbeat tempo she wrote and demonstrated for them. Her hands began clapping with the tempo, her shoulder rubbing against her mother's with light in her eyes. "The new girl in toooooown!"
~In Detention~
"Hi, I'm here to see Tracy Turnblad." A skinny, red haired girl knocked on the door and stood tall with a sucker in her mouth. "Where's her right up?" Smooth James asked when he turned to Tracy with confused eyes. "She doesn't need a detention slip, she's with me." Tracy grabbed her friend's hand and pulled her closer. Smooth James shut the door and everyone went back to dancing just as before.
"Penny, this is Seaweed and Saucy, Saucy and Seaweed, this is Penny." Tracy said and walked away to continue her extracurricular activity. Saucy curtsied to her and quickly followed Tracy, grabbing her by the arms and spinning her around. Seaweed on the other hand, was speechless. ~Back in the studio~
"Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa" The Dynamites belted and smoothly turnt their bodies as one, rocking slowly and smiling at the camera. "To the new girl in tooooown, The new girl in toooooon! Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa." The tempo of the drums, saxophone, and singers increased more. "From out of the blue girl! Hey, This town's in a stew girl! Ooh, what a hullaballoo, girl! She ain't just passin' through girl!"
Everyone on that stage clapped and stomped as loud as they could to express themselves. Saucy was on the platform with her mother, spinning and throwing her hands up with no cares in the world. "Ohh, She's sticking like glue girl! Whooooo, to the man I thought I knew girl." The Dynamites slowly took their positions back to where they originally started, hitting their hips with purpose. "Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. Hey look out for that movin' van, look out look out, look out look out!" A brief silence came over the studio as Sandra lead them toward the ending. "She was the neeeeew girl in.....Towwwwwwn!"
They took their final stance as the stage erupted in cheers and roars of affirmation. Saucy stepped closer to her mother so she could read the cue cards in front of her, much to her dismay. Maybelle cleared her throat and grabbed her child's hand.
"And that's the way you do it! And I'm your Fabled Miss MotorMouth Maybelle. Your DJ Du Jour, pitchin' rhythm your way!" Saucy's mind immediately jumped into action mode as her mother passed the microphone,
"So, Hey, Better Stay and shimmy and sway. We'll be right back with more Negro day!" The two women stepped together to read the sponsor for the day and their smiles quickly faltered. "Brought to you by....Nap-A-Way....for stubborn hair."
The man flipped the queue cards and Sandra fought the urge to tell him something about himself, "Every kink...will be gone in a blink." The buzzer sounded which meant the show had went on commercial, giving Saucy enough time to rush across the way to fix up her hair and freshen up with the other girls. She quickly kissed her mother on the cheek and began her walk.
As Sandra walked, her thoughts began to stir, about nothing and everything all at once. She was so wrapped up that she didn't even recognize there was someone walking towards her, that is until it was too late.
"Oh my!" Sandra exclaimed as she came into contact with a rock of a chest. "Oh I'm so so sorry I-" Her eyes panned upward towards the face of the man. She met a pale skinned man with blue eyes and a sharp jawline gazed down at her, offering a hand. "I am so sorry little miss. I should've watched were I was going." He held out his hand to pull her up. She was awestruck, she took his hand, stunned and profusely apologized. He let out a chuckle that gave her a mini heart attack. "You're...Corny Collins." Her had instantly retracted as she turned her head around to see if anyone was around. They were alone in the hallway. "And you are the Sandra 'Saucy' Stubbs. I love the songs you've written, just shocking as to why you haven't gotten up there yourself." He tilted his head in genuine curiosity. Sandra smiled and ran her white finger nails over her braids, "I think I do much better behind that there desk." Corny ran his own fingers through his hair and glanced around, "Well...I think the world deserves to see you, don't you think?" If it were possible, Saucy would be all shades of pink and red. Her breath was caught in her throat and all she could manage to do was smile.
"I'd love to talk with you more, but I need to go calm a bull down." He took her hand and kissed the top of it ever so lightly. If you walked into the hallway, you'd think Sandra was about to combust. All she could manage to do was smile and stare at the man in front of her, her heart going a mile a minute. "W-well thank you very much Mr.Collins." She said in the calmest voice she could muster up. He rose from his kneeling position and chuckled once more. "Oh no no, please. Call me Corny."
He winked and proceeded to strut away. Sandra watched him until he hit the corner and even then waited a couple of seconds before squealing like a two year old who received a piece of cake. In that moment, she walked the fastest she ever did to their little closet room across the lot. She primped and primed like a little doll, the girls around her not questioning her peppy mood.
Nicest Kids in Town!
~Baltimore 1960~
The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, MotorMouth Maybelle was in her kitchen whipping up breakfast for the three lights of her life: Seaweed, Inez, and Sandra.
"Now I know y'all ain't still sleepin' , we got a big day ahead of us!" Maybelle called out as she began to set the table. Footsteps came from the backroom, all different patterns. The first being heavy but smooth, Seaweed appeared as dapper as usual and kissed his mother on the cheek. "Aw come on now mama, you know you can't rush perfection."
"Which is why she told you to hurry up." A higher voice came up behind him, Inez, the youngest. Seaweed turned his head to mock her and crouched, threatening to chase her.
"Now you two cut it out, Mama is tryin' to cook for y'all, sit down somewhere." A soft, musical voice came into the jumble of the kitchen. Sandra Stubbs, the oldest of the three sat in her usual spot while she watched her siblings follow suit. Maybelle sauntered over to her eldest and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Good mornin' suga, you gon' leave ya hair like that for the day?" She motioned to the robust head of hair, shaped into a puff that sat wide and proud on her daughter's shoulders. Sandra shook her head, sipping the previously placed water, "No ma'am. Don't you worry, I'll have it nice and laid down for you all nice for the show." You see, Sandra knew what to say to ease her mother's mind, but she was also at the age where she could express herself the way she wanted. She would leave her hair up and out for school, then quickly slick it back in an "acceptable" manner in time for their debut.
"Well, as long as you're sure, now you three eat up, the bus will be here in a little." Maybelle laid the plate of bacon, waffles and brown sugar oatmeal on the table.
~A couple of minutes later~
"And don't forget, the show starts at-" Maybelle started as her children entered the not so sturdy looking bus, "We know ma'!" The three exclaimed back as the doors closed. Upon entering, Seaweed was greeted by other boys with loud exclamations, slaps on the palm and pats on the back. Inez was greeted by other girls with squeals of excitement and heavy waves. Sandra was greeted by both females and males with the same phrase, "Hey Saucy!" or "Oh here comes Ms.Saucy!"
Sandra scoffed at them and waved them off, offering some waves here and there, knowing that they were all just having fun. "Saucy? Why Saucy?" Well, Sandra is one of the smoothest singers on the South side of Baltimore. Women and men alike could sit around her for hours on end, listening to her melodic voice hypnotize their troubles away. Her voice came out so smooth is was like silk- no, Sauce. Hence the name, Saucy.
Once they had finally arrived to school, each and every child filed out of the bus, entering the building from the backdoor. Sandra's mood went from Cloud Nine to rock bottom. She hated how they were all treated, just because of their skin. There wasn't much she could do but grin and bear it, as she did so she walked to class. But it wouldn't be in true Stubbs' fashion to walk into the dull place of learning without trying to liven up the moods of her literal and metaphorical brothers and sister. So what did she do?
"I've got sunshiiiiine, on a cloudy day~," She started as she practically floated down the hallway, "When it's cold outside,I've got the month of May,~" Seaweed turned his head away from his friends to see his sister, in her usual chipper mood, "Girl you betta stop." She grabbed the hand of her brother and began to dance with him, "Come on baby brother, sing witcha sister." She looked into his eyes and smiled widely. "Wh-...fine Fine! WeEELL! I guess you'd say What can make me feel this way?" He spun his sister in a circle and seemingly everyone's mood lifted up, but not higher than Sandra's.
"MY GIIIIIRL MY GIRL, MY GIRL!! TALKIN BOUT MYYYYY GIIIIIIRL." The hallway erupted with voices, on and off key, high and low.
Sandra did a small riff before hearing the school bell ring and released her brother, hip bumping him, "3:00 little brother." She stepped into a classroom only to be met with one of her teachers, "Ms.Stubbs, you are late, that is a detention." He began to write her a slip. "Oh Mr.Ichbad, I was just outside with my brother, we did have to walk all the way around to get to our door on account of-" He didn't speak another word, but he did manage to shove that slip into her hand. She had just started her day, not even sitting in her seat yet, and received a detention.
'Well...that's a way to start a Monday.' she thought to herself as she strolled back into the hallway, making her way to the detention room.
Nicest Kids in Town!
Chapter 2
~Baltimore 1960~
It wasn't uncommon for Sandra to be in the detention room. Not because she was a bad student, never that. Mr.Ichbad had a small reputation for sending most of his students to detention halls for numerous reasons, chewing gum, laughing to loud,(being black and proud) blasting music from their stereos and last but not least, not being in your seat before the bell rung.
As Sandra approached the detention doors, she could hear the tunes seeping through the door. Like a light switch, her cheek bones rose and she pushed the door handle, revealing her brother and some other kids she knew. "Now I know y'all don't have detention this early in the day, y'all should be ashamed of ya'selfs." She fake scolded them all as she trekked to the front desk and folded her hands, breaking out in laughter.
Seaweed smiled, holding his hand out to her, "Aw now you know the man is always tryin' to get me down girl." Sandra grabbed his hand and pulled herself up, beginning to dance with him. "Mr.Stubbs what have you done this time to get yo'self 'down' by the man?" She smirked at him and moved her body, like water, with the music.
Her brother's hand flew to his chest and he feigned innocence, "Me?! Nah, I didn't do nothing-" A girl with her curlers still in popped up behind her, "He was playin' his stereo and gettin' fresh with Ms.Malene." Curlers walked away, beginning to take her hair down.
Seaweed smacked his lips and twirled his sister around to distract her from the situation at hand. "Let's focus on things that actually matter...Your Hair!" He softly pulled on one of Sandra's curls. She gasped and smacked his hand. "Boy I know what I'm doin'! How about you worry about one of these little girls you're around here chasing." He pushed her shoulder and went back to dancing. Sandra joined him and hummed along with the beat of the music.
~Timeskip through the day~ Sandra had finally slicked her hair back, leaving the back of her afro out to appease her and her mother. In the time that it took her to do that, a short chubby white girl, had entered the room. She looked a bit frazzled but that was usual when non black people entered the detention room. As Seaweed spun to the music, she crept around the crowd of people. Sandra brushed her off as nothing and began to glide her hands down her front half, following her brother's move.
"Can I help you?" Derek, a lightskinned brotha in the corner of the class asked the girl, turning his neck down to look at her. She watched the two siblings in awe, "That moves swish!" Derek broke out into a smile and turned his head back to Seaweed and Saucy. "Got that right."
"The man can diet me on a diet of detention, so long as he don't starve me of my tunes baby!" Seaweed turned to the girl and Saucy did the same, gliding over to her. Tracey look at the brown skinned woman and smiled. "Does this dance have a name?" Sandra nodded and shimmied around the small woman, "Mhmmm, he calls it 'The Peyton Place after midnight'." She lightly shook the girl with tall black hair.
"I use to uh, attract the opposite sex." Seaweed shimmed and began strutting towards the girl and his sister. "Wow, that is so groovy." The teenager watched as the boy spin slowly and hold his hand out to her. "You're really good!" She kept awing over him, Saucy on the other side of her couldn't take it anymore because she could see her big headed brother's ego boost with every compliment. "Why thank you." She smiled and pondered for a second, "So would it be something like this?" He looked over at his sister and pulled her over, beginning his dance again, but this time, the chubby girl joined in. "Hey I know where I've seen you two before!" Saucy and Seaweed looked over at each other as smiles grew on their faces, "Oh yeah?" Seaweed's movements didn't halt for a moment. Saucy on the other hand took the chance to catch her breath and lean against a desk, "Where?"
Tracey's smile grew twenty sizes as she began fawning over the two "stars", "On Corny's show on negro day! Negro day is the best I wish everyday were negro day!" Saucy couldn't contain her roaring laughter. Seaweed and Tracey began to circle one another, "At our house, it is." The room followed suit in Saucy's action and burst out in chuckles and giggles.
As the laughter continued, Tracey stood, looking up at Seaweed and then at Saucy, "Hey...Show me another one?" Seaweed's arm draped over his older sister (by a couple of months) shoulder, "Oh you wanna see another one?" Saucy's hip poked out and she looked to her brother, "Oh I think she wants to see another one."
"Well," Seaweed began, "Here's a little somethin' signified to say, 'Hello, My name is Seaweed J. ," He pulled Tracey closer with an invisible rope. "Stubbs." The room oh'd and awe'd. Saucy sat back giggled at the current actions and sat up on a desk, swinging her feet to and fro. "What's your's girl?" She called out. "I'm Tray! Cee! Turn! Blad!" The entire room erupted in joy and shock, "You betta get it white girl!"
"Well Tracey, you got it goin' on girl, and before she forgets, the elegant, the lovely, the wonderful," Saucy rolled her eyes as her brother drew out her introduction out, "The always amazing, Sandra "Saucy" Stubbs." The room once again went up in arms, probably disturbing the already peeved teachers.
She waved them all off, "Anyhow, Tracey baby, you one of us now." She gave her a wink and the girl smirked to her. "You're goin' this program already in progress!" Her hips rotated and that caused Sandra to hop off of the desk, bumping Tracey with her own hips.
"Let's go." Seaweed spoke to Tracey as Derek cranked the music back up. Everyone gave themselves space and started dancing, loud and proud.
Unbeknownst to them all, peeking through the glass of the window were two, rather nosey, white boys. Very entrapped by the small teenager, gyrating around without a care in the world.
As the door slowly creaked open, Sandra straightened herself out and cleared her throat.
Seaweed on the other hand didn't notice, "So how you likin' detention?" Tracey's hips moved fluidly, "I'm a bad bad girl who needs to be punished!" She smacked herself on the rear end. Sandra nudged her sibling and nodded towards the door, making him cover his mouth to laugh. Tracey turned her head to the door to see Link Larken and another male staring right back at her.
A beat went by.
"Hey you know...Corny's hosting the hop tomorrow, if he saw you dancing like that he'd put you in the show." The two Black children stood between the other white ones, watching this painfully awkward moment, just before the bell rung Tracy nodded her head, brushing past Link.
"Sorry little darlin', hope I didn't dent your do." He stalked out of the detention room and Saucy looked at Tracey. "Well, you have a good time, we'll see you...eventually." She grabbed her brother's hand and yanked him out of the classroom. ~Chapter 3~
Nicest Kids In Town
Chapter 3~
"Now Seaweed, you know I can't do all that in these heels," Saucy fluffed her afro in the back. "They are way too short, not enough...what's the word?" She looked over to him as they walked around the outside of their school. Of course the dance was being held in the gym, meaning they had to walk all the way around to get to the back door.
Seaweed turned to his sister and rose an eyebrow skeptically, "What about that time momma bought you those little baby heels and you-" Before he could finish the bell rung loudly, alerting all of the kids that the dance competition had begun. They all began running, and slightly jogging for the girls, towards the gym door, instantly starting off their dance.
To others looking in, it might look it had all been rehearsed, but Saucy knew that not one time in any of their lives had they sat in a room together to discuss how they were going to show off for the Corny Collins.
"Hey little girl, with the cash to burn."
Link Larkin sung on stage looking down amongst the divided groups of teenagers doing different variations of the same dance. "I'm sellin' somethin' you won't return. Hey little girl take me off the shelf."
All of the colored kids rotate around each other doing intricate moves, but have the look of pure joy on their faces. Link's singing was drowned out by the movement of their feet, it seemed complicated yet it was only three simple steps, done in different styles.
One would assume that Saucy's eyes were on the wall to focus on her dance moves, but that one would be wrong. Her eyes were trained on the One, the Only, Corny Collins. She had only briefly passed him by in the studio, which was mainly because she had to run to their "dressing rooms" which really was the Black Janitor's locker room. Well at least the have a room right? Incorrect, it was the size of a bathroom and across the studio lot. Nonetheless, she did take time to examine the man's facial features and she was not disappointed.
A flash of white and black hair shifted around the crowd, drawing the eldest two Stubbs' attention, "Seaweed! Wanna do Peyton Place for Corn?" She asked while twisting her hips left and right, just as the two in front of her. Saucy and Seaweed looked at each other and then back at her with a sad expression, "Are you crazy? You gotta dance your dance-" Saucy spun in a clean circle, "And we gotta dance ours." Tracy scoffed but her feet continued to move, "Why?" Saucy leaned over the rail to pat her shoulder, "That's just the way it is Tracy." Tracy couldn't fathom any of this, "But it's your dance!" She said as her head turnt to Seaweed. He smiled at the care she showed for him, " Well, how about you go borrow it for a second?" She smiled just as the Cheshire Cat, "Really?!"" Saucy was ready to break out, she felt the fire under her feet and smiled at Tracy, "Go get it girl!" Tracy quickly embraced Seaweed and Saucy blew her a kiss, just as she turnt around Amber Vontussle was right there, glaring with those cold eyes. Saucy never did like her and was sure Amber shared the same sentiment. As the floor cleared, Tracy moved her hips with the beat, perfectly reflecting the moves that Seaweed had done earlier.
Corny's face shifted in slight confusion as the sea of teenagers parted and a chubby girl white big hair made her way to the center. As much as Saucy wanted to pay attention to her new friend, she couldn't help but carry her eyes over to Corny, his wonderful blue eyes shined under the gym lights. If she was a crazy woman, she'd go on up there and try to impress him herself. But that was not how this cookie was going to crumble.
The beat of the drums began to increase and Tracy's one woman show was quickly turning into a full party. Inez grabbed her sister and began turning her every which way, laughing as she did so. Link blurted out the most soulful 'Whoa' that he could conjure up, making the domino effect of teens dance and hop and what not.
"Hey little girl on a spendin' spree! I don't come cheap but my kisses come free!" Saucy dipped and rocked as much as her feet would allow her and every so often, a set of blue eyes would come cross her brown ones, smiling as if they were the only two people in the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The three Stubbs children departed quickly from the bus, running towards 'Motor Mouth Records' like a martian on a mission. They burst inside and tripped over one another just to get upstairs.
"Oh I'm so glad my babies are happy to be-" Motor Mouth Maybelle started as her children ran into the home, only to rush to the couch and turn the tv on. "Home...." "Ma! Ma! A girl we know from school is gonna be on the show!" Inez blurted out as Seaweed fumbled with the dial. "Sea! If you can't do it I will, you takin' too long!!" Saucy threw her hands up into the air in exaggerated agony. "I'm tryin'!" He replied with out looking over his shoulder.
"Lou Ann!
Joey!
Mikey!
Vickey!
Becky!
Bix! Jesse!
Darla!
Paulie!
Noreen!, Doreen!
Link~
And I'm Tracey!!!!"
The siblings fell out and jumped up, not containing their excitement in the slightest manner. "And the bass and drums are poundin' in your head!"
"Go Tracy! GO Go Tracy!" The siblings said holding onto each other for dear life.
They were so sure that if they held onto each other,
They could stay in this moment forever.
