Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist

Thargelion was the realm of Caranthir, located in the north east of Beleriand just north of Ossiriand and bordered by the Ered Luin, the eastern stretch of mountains that divided Beleriand from the rest of Middle Earth

As always this is not a definitive list! Please feel free to ask more or give me a more specific category!

Around Lake Helevorn and the rivers: Red-breasted merganser, mute swan, white tailed dipper, whooper swan, smew, little grebe, red throated loon, common crane, mallard, common white eye, northern shovler, green winged teal, corn crake, spotted crake, black winged stilt

World building notes

-Like most of the Noldor in Eastern Beleriand, many of Caranthir’s scouts keep birds of prey. In Thargelion these are primarily peregrine falcons and kestrels. Hunting with birds was less common however.

--There are populations of Green Elves who live in Thargelion, primarily in the mountains and near the border of Ossiriand. Though they also do not use birds for hunting, certain species are kept as companions or messengers.

-Chicken breeding as an art and science developed during the Watchful Peace. Chickens in Thargelion are appraised for long plumage and colorful feathers. Their eggs are eaten but they are not often used for meat.

-Chickens, peacocks and quails were kept by the Noldor of Thargelion, techniques of raising and breeding them were learned from Sindar and Silvan cultures of Eastern Beleriand. Indeed the Noldor of Thargelion were one of the only Noldor populations to keep quails.

-Bearded vultures appear on the crests of some of Caranthir’s lords and were even kept by a few of them

-Feathers of various mountain birds especially eagles and ouzel appear in wood carvings as an architectural motif during the Watchful Peace in Thargelion

-Out of all the Fëanorian realms, water birds appear most often in art and other cultural references in Thargelion as Lake Helevorn and its wildlife are a central facet of life there especially in times of peace. Wading birds like crakes, cranes and stilts are especially Valued.

Too Much of a Good Thing

I catch the bullets in my field, reflexively, and turn around to face Gatling. He gradually stops laughing. I like to imagine it’s because he realized what would’ve happened if I didn’t have that instinct ingrained in training, if I’d been a little more distracted, if I’d been someone else. I think he just realized I was mad at him.

I’ve got to start wearing a bulletproof vest to class if they’re going to be like this.

“Twenty laps!” I say. I wish I had a whistle to blow. I never wanted to be the kind of teacher who made everyone run laps whenever one of the students pissed me off, but, as I watch them take off, a slow sense of something, I don’t know, schadenfreude, maybe, fills me.

Regardless, I need the few minutes to myself. My hand is shaking. Not enough that anyone can see it, but enough that if I get close to the table I’m going to knock all the cups off of it. Not a great idea in front of the kids. Especially when they’re getting antsy.

I make my way over to the elevator, slower than I want to, more casually than I probably need to, and step in. The elevator, at least, is solid metal in every direction. I rest my head against the side closest to me and take a few deep breaths. Then it chimes, and I’m visible again, but at least I’m alone in my office. At least this is where the decent coffee lives.

I pour myself a cup – I’ve stolen Darren’s corn crake mug again – and try to shake off the adrenaline surge.

I’m going to fucking kill Coach Domino. I’m going to figure out where the fuck he retired to, and I’m going to break into his house, and I’m going to beat him to death for not instilling basic gun safety in that idiot kid.

Anyway.

The coffee is hot. The scent washes away the worst of it, and I sip at it until I stop wanting to murder any of my students or colleagues. Then I top it off, drop a candy in it, and head back downstairs.

I wasn’t counting laps. They probably know I wasn’t counting laps. If they want to call me on it, I’m not going to fight them – but, despite the scowls, they continue on their last lap around the gym. When I lean against the table, none of the cups so much as shakes. I raise the mug to them, and take another drink.

Gatling summons the energy to flip me off. There’s a lesson well learned, obviously.

“Stretches,” I yell across the room, making a vague gesture that I figure resembles getting ready to stretch well enough that, combined with the actual word, should make my point. I need to get someone in here to give the kid a gun safety lecture. Who does those well? I mean anyone’s going to be better than me. Darren would probably be better than me.

Can I convince Bartok to take over for me? She can still do that military glare, and that might buy points with the kid. Or maybe someone laid back would be better, put the kid at ease to – I actually have no idea what would get through to him. I need someone with a big gun background. Shame I can’t ask Eli; he could use the practice. They’re probably going to want him to give that lecture on national TV.

I don’t think I can get away with making him sit in the corner and do his homework. Fine. It’s solo target practice for him for the rest of today. I point. He gets the picture.

The rest of the kids eye me warily, like I’m getting ready to make them do laps nonstop. But none of them tried to shoot me, so it doesn’t take much more than a look to get me to take pity on them, and start running them through strikes and parries like they’ve been practicing. There’s very little chatter. Which is good, considering their preferred chatter.

Psybeam gives me the faintest little thumbs up. I give one back.

I wonder how soon I’ll get another excuse to go back upstairs for more coffee. The machine down here is the worst.

super irrelevant to anything, but i shared that image of the "baby crow" to a server i'm in and someone ended up being like, "i showed this to a friend who's really into crows and they didn't think that's what it was". this led them to guessing it might be a baby guillemot but when i looked at those pictures it didn't seem right to me (not that i'm a bird expert). so i did some looking and eventually found it's most likely a baby corn crake. so i guess look those up for more fluffy creatures :)

I experimented with the idea of owls and foxes for design patterns on textiles, went back to a former pattern of trees and a line drawing for the black tee shirt. This idea came from the corn crake exhibition we saw in October, the Irish for owl in old Irish.

The simpler the lines, the easier it is to create a design.

It is very difficult to paint acrylic straight onto cotton, I should have used a primer.
