'He's known around the world for his roles in Peaky Blinders, Dunkirk and now Christopher Nolan's highly praised Oppenheimer.
Yet Cillian Murphy, 47, is famously private - offering only a sliver of detail about himself throughout his years in the spotlight.
So just what do we know about the Irish star? Here, FEMAIL delves into the father-of-two's home life, early career and family as we take a look at the insights Cillian has shared with his fans.
The Tommy Shelby actor was born in Cork in 1976 to a mother who taught French, while his father, Brendan, worked as a schools inspector before moving to the Department of Education. His grandfather, aunts and uncles were also teachers.
But not wanting to follow the family tradition of working in education, Cillian pursued a career in the arts after getting a 'huge high' from his drama module at Catholic secondary school Presentation Brothers College.
However, his first performing love turned out not to be acting - instead he turned his talents toward music.
Cillian and his The Sons of Mr. Green Genes bandmates, which included his brother, were even offered a five-album record deal.
However, they were forced to turn down the opportunity by his parents, with the actor explaining: 'My brother was still in school. I was 18 and he was 16, the idea of losing two of us was just too outrageous and horrifying for them so it didn't happen and then everything just kind of fell apart.
'In retrospect, the music industry is just terrible. Unless you're super successful it's really hard to make a living. We’d have crashed and burned pretty quickly in that industry,' Cillian told the Armchair Expert podcast, via The Irish Examiner.
The Corkman went on to study law at University College Cork before he dropped out in an effort to break out into the world of acting
But recalling the moment he told his parents of his decision, he said: 'It wasn't a happy moment in our family history', reported The Independent.ie.
Cillian also discussed his 'pretty average upbringing' in a video with Vice, saying: 'I grew up in Cork, my parents are teachers.
'Pretty average, middle-class upbringing, you know? They were, I think, probably anxious that I did well at school and went to college, did all that stuff.
'I foolishly decided to pursue a law degree. But I was playing music. I was playing in a band, and I just started acting then.
'Those two things were happening and they became much more important than going to college. I didn't really go in at all, and I failed gloriously in the first year.'
But he soon found success as an actor, appearing in late 90s Irish film Disco Pigs and Danny Boyle's violent horror 28 Days Later in 2002.
He's also known for his appearance in director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy as the villainous Dr Jonathan Crane and his alter-ego Scarecrow.
Most famously, he played Birmingham gang boss Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders for six seasons from 2013 to 2022 - but said he couldn't have stuck to the work schedule without his 'amazing wife'.
He married Irish artist Yvonne McGuinness in 2004, after the pair first met at one of his rock band's shows in 1996. They went on to have two children together, Malachy, 17, and Aran, 16.
Cillian told GQ of his work schedule: 'I couldn't do this without [my wife] and her understanding. But it is a struggle.
'I think it is for any dad whose work takes him away, which it generally does, and which consumes him, which my work does.'
He added: 'I make sure that I try not to go from job to job to job, because that means you live in a bubble of set, hotel, set, hotel, plane, film festivals - which, to me, is not reality. So I just check out from that for six months a year.'
Cillian and his family now live in Dublin after he reportedly splashed out close to £1.7million on a Victorian townhouse.
The four-storey home, originally built in 1863, is located in Monkstown, south Co. Dublin, and has six double bedrooms as well as four receptions rooms.
However while the family are now based in Dublin, his sons were born in London and stayed there until 2015 before they all moved to Ireland, with the actor joking they moved because his sons were developing 'very posh English accents'.
'We were in London for 14 years, both our kids were born there. We only came back to Dublin in 2015,' he told the Armchair Expert podcast.
'It's kind of an Irish story, you know, to move away, do your thing and then come home. That seems to be a common narrative for Irish people.
'We wanted the kids to be Irish, and they were sort of at that age where they were preteens and they had very posh English accents and I wasn’t appreciating that too much. Our parents are a certain age and it was just a nice time to come home.'
The 5ft7 star also noted that his sons were almost taller than him.
It also seems he won't be following in the footsteps of the acting elite, claiming he 'couldn’t envisage' upping sticks to Los Angeles.
Cillian said: 'I love visiting and I love the food and I do love the weather. I don’t know, I just feel European, I just feel Irish. I’d feel like a bit of an interloper if I lived in California, I couldn’t envisage living there permanently.''

[ad_1] Roy Keane stares at a plate of prawn sandwiches during the advertRoy Keane has helped unveil Manchester United’s new third kit with a ‘devilish’ video. The Corkman, now working as a pundit with Sky Sports, is the central character in the video which has been posted on social media to launch United’s new white kit which features a red devil instead of the full club crest. In the 90-second video, Keane says: “So you’re a devil are ya? So let’s remind you of the terms."The devil is more like a pact, a deal shall we say. It’s not for everyone. We expect a lot.”The end of the video features Keane looking disdainfully at a plate a prawn sandwiches, a reference to the comments he made criticising United’s ‘corporate’ fans back in 2000.Keane joined United in the summer of 1993 from Nottingham Forest and went on to make 326 appearances for the club before leaving in controversial circumstances in 2005 after a disagreement with then manager Alex Ferguson.Keane is no stranger to endorsements as he previously took part in a number of Walkers crisps advertisements during his time as a United player in the 1990s. During an interview
Pat Kenny: "Do the fellas at Man United know the expression ‘cute Corkman’? Do they?” Roy: “No, not yet.” Kenny: “Not yet. They’ll learn. What I mean - you could be a target for girls and so on - “ Roy: “I don’t know, yeah.”
(the host kept throwing the idea of girls chasing Roy for the money he earns in Roy’s face)

'Cillian Murphy has been named best actor at the 30th Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles for his lead performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Murphy spoke with dignity as he received the “Actor” statuette. “This is extremely special because it comes from you guys,” he said to his fellow performers. “Twenty-eight years ago I was trying to become an actor. I was a failed musician and I felt like an interloper. But now, looking out and all of you guys here today, I know that I’m part of something truly wonderful.”
Paul Giamatti, nominated for Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, had been felt to be a marginally more likely winner at SAG. By pipping him at the post, Murphy, winner of the Bafta last weekend, now looks to be a near-unstoppable favourite for the equivalent Oscar next month...
Oppenheimer had a good night, also taking the prize for best cast in a motion picture and, for Robert Downey jnr, best supporting actor. Downey jnr, who plays antagonist Lewis Strauss in Nolan’s film, has been perfecting his speech game throughout the season. “Unlike my fellow nominees, I will never grow tired of the sound of my own voice,” he said at the podium.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, apparently unbeatable at any ceremony this season, took best female supporting actor, for her turn as a bereaved mother in The Holdovers. “How lucky are we that we get to do what we do?” she said. “In what other profession are people able to live so many lives and touch so many hearts of those they have never gotten to meet?” Randolph and Downey jnr seem certain to repeat this at the Oscars. The ensemble prize has helped tighten Oppenheimer’s already firm grasp on the best picture Academy Award...
There was good news for Team Murphy on the other side of the Atlantic also, as Emily Watson won best supporting performance at the Berlin Film Festival for her turn opposite the Corkman in Tim Mielants’s Small Things Like These. Based on a novel by Claire Keegan, the searing drama, which Murphy co-produced, opened the festival – one of the big three in Europe, alongside Venice and Cannes – to rapturous reviews on February 15th. “I had a front-row seat watching Cillian Murphy unravel, and it was truly a privilege,” Watson said. “He had a dream that I was going to be in the movie, and here I am.” The English actor plays a mother superior in a film touching on revelations concerning the Magdalene Laundries.
Attention now turns to the Oscars on March 10th in Hollywood.'

From Gaza to Cork. A wonderful hip-hop story for 2020
Music is the universal language and nowhere has this been demonstrated more than with the story of MC Abdul Rahman, an 11 year old rapper from Gaza, Palestine, who has captured the imagination of many these last few months. It’s a story with a big Cork connection too, but first let’s take it back a few days to a video that has caused everything to go viral in the last week.
MC Abdul uploads different videos to instagram weekly, and spreads positivity through hip-hop covers of other artists and his own material. The latest clip, featuring him surrounded by his school friends and rapping to a track by Palestinian rapper Waheeb Nasan, took off in a big day and found favour with big names likes DJ Khaled and Bella Hadid! MCA Rap (Abdul) went on to feature on a live instagram video with Saudi rap guru Big Hass, who is one of the most influential purveyors of hip-hop in the Arab world.
Abdul went from a few hundred followers to over 60 thousand in a matter of days and it wasn’t only DJ Khaled spreading the love. Respected UK artists such as a Lowkey and Akala also shared the story, and Abdul was suddenly in big demand, with rappers and producers from all over the world wanting to collab and send beats! It’s an amazing story but many of us here in Cork already knew all about Abdul from a few months ago.
Abdul was introduced to me at the start of the Lockdown by a Corkman named Liam Ahern who is teaching in Mexico city, and he helped connect one of his online students (Abdul) to our own GMC of the Kabin studio here. Abdul had already been collaborating with the kids in the Kabin and the Hut through GMC by the time I started help promote him here, and i was very honoured to give one of their original tracks (“Peace”), it’s first worldwide radio play on Corks RedFM a few months ago.
His Cork connections have resonated deeply here and supported by Youth work Cork and Ireland plus Music Generation, GMC has managed to get things up and running with Liam and Abdul. His weekly videos are really popular and many of my own contacts have been in touch offering support, including Cork City FC, who have given me a jersey to send to Abdul (Covid restrictions mean I can’t send it yet). Abdul returned the favour on my own Instagram live the other night with a specially themed rap about Cork City FC and the Kabin! Illustrator Audrey Cantillon and graf artists the Trouble Club have also sent me stuff for him, and a young LA youtube reviewer with a huge hip-hop channel (Dads reacts) has invited him to do stuff too.
It’s only the beginning for this amazingly talented kid. The thing that is most impressive about the boy for me, besides his skills, is his demeanour and grace and it’s his videos display a passionate pride in his Gaza background and heritage too. Abdul hopes to spread peace, unity and love through his music and he is doing a great job of connecting Palestine with the world. He is a kid from Gaza who is shining a light on this wonderfully colourful and vibrant region that has been oppressed for many years. Hip-hop is the perfect medium in which to tell this story.
He has a great family and support and will be able to keep his feet on the ground with this new found fame, as he continues to make music an do covers as he develops his style. His english is amazing and he raps in the language too, which is definitely helping his crossover potential, but he doesn’t rule out rapping in arabic one day. His videos are filmed under powerful Gaza backdrops and it is a great way for us to see the world through his eyes. He will be coming to Cork once this pandemic ends and I can’t wait to collaborate with him more through the Kabin and one day I want him to come on my radio show too. The Kabin has it’s own 11 year stars such as MC Tiny and friends, and there is a powerful bond developing between our rappers here and Abdul and other Palestinians such as Waheeb Nasan. Irish rap legend Murli is one of those who has been assisting him, and Abdul will never be short of Irish friends as he begins his hip-hop journey around the globe!

9/11 the story of one-The voices of many.
This must have been one of the saddest stories of that day: The attack on the World Trade Centre in New York touched Corkman Mr John Clifford’s family in a particularly cruel way. Just hours after learning that his brother, Ronnie, who worked in the centre, had survived the disaster, Mr Clifford was told that his sister, Ruth, was on one of the planes that smashed into the trade centre’s twin…

100 Years Ago Today - 31 December 1920
by Richard Forrest
In the news 100 years ago:
Regarding the Partition Act, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Sir Hamar Greenwood, wanted progress for all but added, “there can be no compromise with murder”.
Éamonn De Valera was in the United States and addressed conferences in Cleveland, Chicago and St. Paul. The states of Ohio, Kentucky, California and Illinois were the latest to rally to support the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic.
Two attacks on the police took place in Midleton, one in the centre of the town and the other, an ambush, a couple of miles out at Ballyrichard. Constable Mullen was killed and Constable Thorpe later succumbed to his injuries at the military hospital in Cork. A total of seven more policemen were injured. The Echo said, “the tragic events cast a gloom over Midleton and Cork City”. One of the injured was Constable Reddy of the Tuckey Street station, Cork. Reddy was a well-known and popular officer who on the night of December 11th–12th took an active role in saving property from destruction by fire. The attack in Midleton consisted of a vigorous gunfight at the junction of Main Street and Charles Street leaving bullets embedded in walls and blood on the ground. The ambush was on a dispatch on its way to respond to the gunfight. As for the civilian population, well that was pouring out of the town to Cork, Youghal, Cove or to family and friends in the surrounding townlands in order to avoid reprisals.
Richard Leonard (32), a Schools Attendance Officer, was taken from his lodgings at his sister’s home near Caherconlish, Co. Limerick and shot dead by an armed party. He was said to have been an inoffensive man and, as far as could be ascertained so far, no motive could be assigned for the occurrence.
In London, William Maud Amphion Robinson (23) was charged with conspiracy to set fire to a timber warehouse. A witness stated that the defendant had previously acted as an official at social functions held by the Irish Self-Determination League at Lewisham.
The Rosslare service between Cork and London was set to resume with trains running in both directions.
Regardless of what else was happening, racing continued to be front page news. Perhaps what Bill Shankly said of soccer could be equally applied to horse racing. After a night of squalls, water lay in abundance, on the roads and fields around Newbury as well as on the course itself. Attendance and numbers of horses racing were both down on the previous day as a result. ‘Heath Lad’ provided the notes from Newmarket and a preview of the Victory Steeplechase.
America won tennis’s Davis Cup over Australia in Auckland, New Zealand.
Dolphin and the University (UCC) were due to meet at the Mardyke at 3 pm on Saturday. With the interprovincials forthcoming, a keen game was anticipated.
Sr. Epherm Mary McDonagh of the Little Sisters of the Poor died. Sr. Epherm joined the order over fifty years previously and tended cheerfully to the needs of the poor throughout.
A second operation was performed on Enrico Caruso in New York in which a portion of a rib was removed. His condition was described as serious. The operatic tenor would die in August the following year at the age of 48.
Patrick I. Barry, heating engineer, was elected a member of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers. The society was founded to promote the arts and sciences connected with heating and ventilating. The Corkman was already a member of the London association.
Richard Forrest is Executive Librarian for Local Studies at Cork City Libraries.
