Rare 1-in-100-Million ‘Cotton Candy’ Lobster Found off the Coast of New Hampshire
A rare genetic mutation gives the crustacean its unique hues but also makes it more vulnerable to predators.
In late July, 25-year-old Atlantic Lobster Company owner Joseph Kramer headed out on his boat with his father and girlfriend. As he checked the contents of his 20 or so traps off the coast of New Castle, New Hampshire, he was shocked to find a mesmerizingly bright-colored lobster inside the very last one. At first, Kramer figured he’d caught a one-in-two-million blue lobster, but he soon found out the bright crustacean at hand was even rarer: He’d captured a 1-in-100-million “cotton candy” lobster. Since the animal met the local guidelines allowing it to be caught, Kramer brought it to the Seacoast Science Center in Rye. There, aquarist Sam Rutka broke the happy news that his catch was a healthy male cotton candy lobster with a “really beautiful kind of a lavender, purple, pink-ish hue,” Rutka tells Seacoastonline’s Ian Lenahan, who first reported the story. In his career spanning more than a decade, Rutka has only worked with 15 cotton candy lobsters...

Rating all of my Coral Island partners' 10 heart cutscenes
Trying to do this without spoiling what happens during the dates
Aaliyah 3/10 Didn't really have a romantic feel to it, could've been easily mistaken for just some random cutscene until the very end. The activity she had set up was... meh. Confessing her feelings was giving high school crush tbh
Chaem 1/10 I love her too much to give this cutscene a zero, but it had like no romantic feeling to it at all, not even a little. From all my partners hers is the only one where the player asks to kiss her, not the other way around. Without the kiss at the end it would've been just like any other heartevent, you could've shown me the whole thing without the last three seconds and I would've thought it was like idk seventh heart event idk
Kenny 8/10 Cute, romantic, he had set up a cute couples activity, the part of the island where it was set was pretty, he was blushing, adorable. I don't have screenshots of the love confession and I can't remember what he said :(
Macy 9/10 Beautiful setting, romantic, a proper date. She literally went 👉👈 kicking her feetsies while confessing her feelings. Also the letter she sent me beforehand asking me to a date was signed by her AND Stephen which umm the most adorable thing ever. Sadly Stephen wasn't actually part of the date
Mark 4/10 Honestly? Quite a disapointment, no romantic feeling basically at all. Some of the things he said while confessing his feelings were super cute and sweet, but up until then it was just... silly. Bonus points for 1) he was in his swimwear 👀 and 2) the kiss was kinda hot, made me go OH! 👀
Nina 8/10 Super adorable setting and she had prepared the cutest activity for us, dialogue was pretty cute, the date felt romantic right from the start. But she almost chocked?? like literally during the date which was random, to say the least. noooo don't die you're so sexy
Rafael 10/10 Perfect!! Cute!! Adorable!! Romantic!! Sweet!! Cute little activity and he had set up a spot for us, the way he confessed his feelings was the cutest thing ever. Also he kinda hinted that we could umm how should I put it... fuck. Okay not really but also kinda, like in a "okay are you just being considerate and a gentleman orrrrr? 👀" kinda way
Raj 7/10 It was fun, cute, very different from the others. Kinda surprising setup for Raj actually, not what I expected them to do. Before the confessing their feelings part it seemed more like two friends hanging out than a romantic date. But at the end they used the L word, instead of just saying they "have feelings for" or "like" me, which earns them a couple extra points
Scott 9/10 Really surprising, I did not see the eternal fratboy putting that much effort into a date coming. There wasn't even a slightest chance to mistake it for anything but a romantic date for even a second, like dude went in with setting the mood
Theo 8/10 Adorable, but definitely not the kinda first date I'd ever want to have irl lmao. But in game? Adorable, cute, heartwarming. Love confession part was lowkey intense like dude, first date. chill

have u ever listened to maintenance phase - in my experience they actually do their due diligence in terms of researching things and they do a really fantastic job of debunking and deconstructing diet culture bullshit
i won't lie, i've avoided maintenance phase for two reasons – the fact that i find this subject matter really draining, and the fact that i have a pretty low opinion of michael hobbes as a journalist.
when hobbes was still working on the "you're wrong about" podcast, he and sarah, whose last name i can't remember for the life of me, did an episode on stephen jiminez's "the book of matt". if you haven't heard of it or read it, it's a product of a 13 year long investigative journalistic effort into matthew shepard's murder, which is thought of as an early instance of a homophobic hate crime in the US attracting a lot of media coverage. bill clinton flew out to wyoming for this one. jiminez was reporting on this in the 90s because he wanted to make a documentary special, but stuck around after catching onto how fishy this version of events was. spoiler alert, through very convincing evidence, he concluded that this was a drug-related murder.
jiminez is also a gay man, and it feels silly that i feel this is necessary to point out, but you need to know that this isn't a case of some straight dude being dismissive of anti-gay violence. but the way hobbes framed this on the episode grossed me out a bit. i'm paraphrasing, but his reaction was something like, "well, who cares if this isn't true? we got some good legal protections out of it." and it just got under my skin that a journalist would be so dismissive of the facts of a case. you can say that you feel conflicted about how legal wins came out of this, while also noting that jumping to conclusions is bad reporting practice. we have something in this country called "the first amendment," which means you can admit that something is a mixed bag and not be arrested for that, which is pretty cool.
and there are my reservations about the topic of diet culture broadly. i think diet culture is mean-spirited, noxious, and judgmental. i also feel a bit clammy when people hardline in their arguments against it to the point where they inadvertently play defense for big agro and food colonialism. a lot of it operates on western bias, and i want to yell, "surely you can't think that what happened with nauru is morally excusable?" but it never comes up. it blackpills you a lot when you realize that an island nation was stripped bare to mine phosphate – ironically, a crucial ingredient in many fertilizers – and is sold junk "meat" like mutton flaps and turkey tails because you can't farm on coral that's stripped bare.
the wellness industry is awful, but the food industry is too. like i said, i've avoided this podcast, but if they manage to be equal opportunity haters, i may reconsider my snap judgment.

The dock, beneath a canopy of white sunshades, was littered with wayward wires, bolts, straps, and tools. Karl yelled at his dogs—Doris and Mishka—who were racing by. If I’d arrived yesterday, he told me, I would have met his other dog, his favorite, a pitbull-mastiff mix named Kujo (like the Stephen King canine, but with a K, like Karl). But Kujo had been found dead that morning under a neighbor’s house, and Karl, sentimentally, had carried the body to his wheelbarrow and cut the dog’s head off with a hacksaw. The fireworms would now eat it to the bone. Then Karl would mount Kujo’s skull on the roadside façade of his home, next to the whitened horse pelvis and steer’s skull—the latter appointed with the ocular prostheses of two red Ping-Pong balls. “There was an open space there, so,” he shrugged. The house was a two-story clapboard, painted blue and sea-foam green, but the oceanside façade was a massive dead coral reef. Though there were four bedrooms in the house, Karl lived partially underground in a cavern he’d cut into the rock beneath the structure. He had no furniture save a bed on the stone floor, one foot above sea level. “Those worms are crazy,” Karl went on. “Should be ready tomorrow.” He meant his dog’s skull. “Lots of things like that around here.” He said he’d spotted one of the island’s infamous snakes, a corn snake, the night before. I tried not to look around the yard. I didn’t want to see that wheelbarrow. I focused on Karl. The crust of last night’s sleep held to his lashes. He projected anxiety and calm, agitation and confidence. He was enduring me, and he was equipped to do so until the end of time. His voice was high-pitched and he spoke through clenched teeth. He sounded like the smartest child in the room, intriguing but also menacing—Big Bird on MDMA.

Movie Review - Avatar: The Way of Water
A few years ago there was an study that came out saying that the average person can’t name a single character from the 2009 blockbuster hit movie Avatar. For context, Avatar was James Cameron’s first movie since the previous biggest grossing movie in history Titanic released twelve years earlier. Avatar won several Oscars in technical categories and it became the biggest grossing film in history (it has since been surpassed). This question of “can you name a character from Avatar” actually raised a bigger question: how was something so wildly successful and critically acclaimed, forgotten so soon? People can name characters from movies that grossed far less than Avatar. For example, The Big Lebowski grossed only $18 million domestically in 1998 and the average person can name multiple characters from that. So was the big deal about Avatar the spectacle of it all more so than a connection to the characters? In late 2009 / early 2010, I went to see Avatar in IMAX 3-D and was impressed. The haters thought it was just “Dances with Ferngully”, but to me Cameron was making a bigger statement that there is a reason to go to the movie theater and experience something you can’t on your phone or tablet. Was it something I needed to buy or watch again? No, but I had a blast seeing it and appreciated his environmental message. So now, thirteen years since that big hit movie, James Cameron is back with the first of four sequels (not a typo) Avatar: The Way of Water, opening today.
Tumblr media
movie poster
Since the first movie, Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) is now married to Naytiri (Zoe Saldana). They now have children Neteyam, Lo’ak, Tuk and adopted daughter Kiri, who was the daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver, who also plays Kiri). There is also a human boy Spider they are friends with, who was the son of villain Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Jake is adapting to being a father and not being so hard on his kids. But then Quaritch, or an avatar of him, is back to search for Jake on Pandora. Jake escapes to safety with his family to the island of Metkayina. Whereas they were used to the forest before, they must now get used to being underwater. The leader of Metkayina is Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and his wife Ronal (Kate Winslett), who help Jakes and his family. Quaritch gets a hold of Spider, who is siding with Jake and his family, and brings him on his hunt to Metkayina.
Tumblr media
can you name these Avatar characters?
For my money, James Cameron’s greatest film is Terminator 2: Judgement Day! Everyone over-praises Titanic, but T2 was Cameron firing on all cylinders: his strengths as an action director, groundbreaking special effects that enhanced the film and didn’t distract, and an awesome story. I was also a big fan of the first Terminator and Aliens, but T2 is his best work regardless of what the Academy thinks. The first Avatar doesn’t hold a candle to T2. Now with his first movie in 13 years, I saw this in 3D. I have to say this: much has been made of how select scenes were filmed at a higher frame rate (HFR) than the standard 24 fps. During some of the action sequences, you’re watching it and within one scene, there’d be a shot that looks like virtual reality and then the next shot looks like film. For me, it took me out of the moment and honestly it was kind of distracting. Some audiences might not mind this and perhaps it looks different if it was seen in 2D or if you’re watching it at home (which is contrary to this film’s mission to experience it in the movie theater), and hey - maybe I’m a caveman who is used to watching movies a certain way and can’t adjust, but for me it was a little distracting and honestly disappointing. Having said that, that is not something that occurs throughout the entire film. The underwater scenes were spectacular in 3D with fish and coral bouncing off the screen. Story-wise it was a little better than the first, but it does suffer a little from middle movie syndrome (no real beginning, no real ending). Many noticed that in the first Avatar, it referenced Cameron’s Aliens as Giovanni Ribisi was playing a corporate stooge similar to Paul Reiser. In the last third of this (semi-spoiler alert), it reminded me a lot of Titanic. How many times can Cameron reference himself? I appreciated the environmental message, but kinda wish there was more to it. In a few years, not sure if I’ll remember the names of these characters in the way I know Star Wars or Marvel characters, but if you sit back and bask in the cinematic spectacle, you’ll enjoy...well, some of it.

Meet the Bachelorettes of Coral Island!
Check out the Bachelors! Check out the Townies!
Tumblr media
Yuri
When she is not busy keeping the islanders healthy, she can be spotted hanging out or playing chess at the beach shack; She also likes tattoos, pastel hair, and playing pool. Yuri is not your usual MD— she spent her 20s as a doctor who crossed many borders, frequently dispatched to remote areas to practice for little to no pay. Presumably why she has no decent savings and decided to settle in Starlet Town, a boat ride away from her hometown, Tosaka. She is close with her roommate Millie and fellow MD, Charles.
Loves: Fish sandwich, green curry, lobster Hates: Flowers
Tumblr media
Lily
Despite having a well-paid remote job, Lily still lives at home with her dad and brother, Theo (a bachelor). Usually, she spends her days working at home and would visit the lake or library on the weekend. Once a week, usually on a Monday, Lily would stay at the Abandoned Villa, as a favor to her good friend, Nina. She watches the Villa while Nina’s away and uses that time to recuperate. Lily loves miniature bonsais.
Loves: Kimchi, onigiri, omurice, bonsais Hates: Diamond
Tumblr media
Eva
She is a bachelorette. She is a happy-go-lucky baker who works at the general store. She enjoys talking to the islanders, be it local, new, visitors, everybody! And is good friends with a lot of them. Currently, Eva doesn't have a lot of savings but when she does, has dreams to visit more exotic places. According to the islanders, Eva is always a delight to talk to— a positive ray of sunshine. A fan of red velvet cakes and cookies. Sews most of her clothes herself!
Loves: Cookies, Orchids Hates: Garlic
Tumblr media
Leah
She lives her bachelorette life with her father and stepmom in an old massive house that the locals call “The Mansion.” She is a self-hired, yoga instructor at the community center and takes her online presence seriously. She spends her day wandering around the island with a camera on hand. Leah’s mother is an art dealer who travels the world constantly. So when her parents divorced, after long deliberation between the lawyers and what seems like a lifetime worth of legal fees, they decided that it would be best for Leah to stay with her dad. This was to retain some sort of stability in her life. She loves to be surrounded by nature, fine arts and a closet full of designer collections. Dislikes mushrooms and eggs.
Loves: Pearl Hates: All fish
Tumblr media
Macy
She grew up on a neighboring island and now lives full time at the Inn. She makes a living by selling images to a visual media company, Pletty inc.  Before Coral Island, she went to university for finance in Plotera, tried her luck working a corporate job for 3 years while selling photography as a side gig. At one point, she decided to pursue photography professionally and left her corporate job. Before embarking on a life as an artist, she moved back home for a year, catching up with her family while preparing for her island-hopping career. Though she didn't say how long she would stay in Coral Island, she mentioned that she would eventually move on to another island, unless she has a good reason not to. An only child. She loves simple nights, taking pictures, playing video games and Stephen, her rescued lobster.
Loves: Pizza Hates: Pickles
Tumblr media
Nina
This bachelorette technically doesn't live in Coral Island anymore, but still visits her vacation home at the beach, from time to time. Aside from wild rumors around town, she's never talked about her abrupt departure, so it remains a mystery until now.  Nina is well educated and enjoys lavish vacations. Close friends with Suki. Hates bananas but loves banana fritters.
Loves: Banana fritter, Flower bouquet Hates: Banana, Tomato soup
Tumblr media
Zarah
An eligible bachelorette who is an adventurer at heart. Zarah lives on a boat. She enjoys going around the island and finding treasures, be it gems, old artifacts, or a buried history. Zarah was born and raised on the other side of Coral Island. When her boat is not docked at its usual place, she is presumed to visit her family. But what really is going on in her life, nobody really knows. She can be a bit mysterious at times. Allergic to cats.
Loves: Rambutan, Azurite Hates: Roasted Chesnuts
Tumblr media
Alice
Alongside her twin sister Suki, they own, run, and live by the beach in Coral Inn. Running a business is hard, and running it with your sister is harder. Alice spends her days working at the inn and her free time hanging out with friends in town. She is a good friend with Noah, and they are often spotted together grabbing morning coffee—or in-depth discussion about unexplainable phenomenons. Thinks pizza is overrated. Loves minced jackfruit pies.
Loves: Green smoothies Hates: Pizza
Tumblr media
Suki
She is recently divorced and, according to her nightstand, currently “finding love from within,” and learning “how to expand love.” Focusing on herself, she drowns herself in work, exercise, and building a healthy co-parenting relationship with her ex. Though she is no longer a Sanchez, she still keeps a close relationship with the whole family. Loves minced jackfruit pies.
Loves: Green smoothies Hates: Pizza, Pineapple upside down-cake
Tumblr media
Millie
She owns the house in Garden Lane and rents one of the rooms out to Yuri. She works at the Library and likes to spend her free time bird watching. Not only does she take good care of the books at the Library, her responsibility includes helping the Mayor with arranging festivals, donations, etc. She loves old books restorations. Wears glasses.
Loves: Veggie ramen Hates: Fish
Taken from the Update Tabs on Coral Island’s Kickstarter
These are all of the Bachelorettes so far, I’m not sure if there will be more bachelorettes added in the future!

Meet Coral Island’s bachelors and bachelorettes!
Noah: An obvious fan of consistency, Noah was born, raised and settled in Coral Island-- with a brief departure to Pokyo for university years; Now back in town, he spends his days keeping the local tavern running, in flat colored khakis.
Yuri: A doctor who spent her youth joining doctors-in-need programs around the world, she decided that it was time to choose a home and settled in Coral Island. When she is not busy keeping the islanders healthy, she can be spotted hanging out or playing chess at the beach shack; She also likes tattoos, pastel hair, and playing pool.
Scott: He is a city boy at heart. Always up for fun and is never a bore. He found his passion for artifacts and has dedicated his life to it.
Lily: Despite having a well-paid remote job, Lily still lives at home with her dad and brother. Usually, she spends her days working at home and would visit the lake or the library on the weekend. Loves bonsai.
Eva: She is a happy-go-lucky baker who works at the general store. She enjoys talking to the islanders, be it local, new, visitors, everybody! And is good friends with a lot of them. According to the islanders, Eva is always a delight to talk to-- a positive ray of sunshine. A fan of red velvet cakes and cookies.
Rafael: He runs a local blacksmith shop along with his older brother, Pablo, who is also an eligible bachelor. As a reserved fellow, Rafael is rarely seen out at town, but on rare days that he does, he can be found at Socket Electronics or Coral Inn, visiting his cousins and niece, Valentina.
Leah: Lives her bachelorette life with her father and stepmom in an old massive house that the locals call “The Mansion.” She is a self-hired, yoga instructor at the community center and takes her online presence seriously. She spends her day wandering around the island with a camera on hand. Dislikes mushrooms and eggs.
Kenny: He’s a part-time rancher, and full-time bachelor. He grew up in Coral Island and has fostered close relationships with other islanders-- be it people, animals, trees, spirits from the beyond-- all of them. Besides making friends, he loves having lunch outdoors, playing the flute, and cold kombucha.
Surya: He is a fresh marine biologist graduate who is currently doing a fellowship in Coral Island. Like you, he is also new to the island! Loves herbed tempeh and Lodeh dish.
Nina: This bachelorette technically doesn't live in Coral Island anymore, but still visits her vacation home at the beach, from time to time. Aside from wild rumors around town, she's never talked about her abrupt departure, so it remains a mystery until now. A close friend with Suki.
Theo: On the weekends, he makes a quick buck performing live at the tavern. He doesn't have what people call a “decent voice,” but he does have “soul” when he performs. Apparently, according to him, that's what's important. Day job: a fisherman.
Macy: She grew up in a neighboring island and now lives full time at the Inn. She makes a living by selling images to a visual media company, Pletty inc. She loves simple nights, taking pictures, playing video games and Stephen, her rescued lobster.
Pablo: He and his brother, Rafael, are both blacksmith and bachelors. When Pablo isn’t smelting ores, he can be found around town, lending hands to the townfolks, cleaning up the graveyard, or tossing anecdotes at the Tavern. Good friends with many people, easygoing in nature, but hates beaches— dislikes sand in his shoes.
Alice: Alongside her twin sister Suki, they own, run, and live by the beach in Coral Inn. Running a business is hard, and running it with your sister is harder. Alice spends her days working at the inn, and her free time hanging out with friends in town. Loves minced jackfruit pies. Thinks pizza is overrated.
Luke: Coming from old-money, this bachelor lives with his parents and dog, Taco, in the manor behind the vineyard; a family business that he feels pressured to take over. Not a fan of the silver spoon, Luke runs Socket Electronics in his spare time in an attempt to create a name for himself, separate from his family legacy.
Zarah: An eligible bachelorette who is an adventurer at heart. Zarah lives on a boat. She enjoys going around the island and finding treasures; be it gems, old artifacts, or a buried history. Zarah was born and raised on the other side of Coral Island. When her boat is not docked at its usual place, she is presumed to visit her family. But what really is going on in her life, nobody really knows. She can be a bit mysterious at times. Allergic to cats.
