The weird thing is that in hindsight, we had so many
bad omens saying that this was coming, like that was
some self fulfilling prophecy shit. The way the players were treated by the media, tv hosts invading the training centre with a helicopter to do silly Sunday tv stuff. The jingles with children begging the players to think of them while playing cause they never saw Brazil take a world up home. The entire zeitgeist felt like a tragedy waiting to happen.
Tumblr media
this fucking tweet that cursed us back in 2010 saying
"calm down guys everything is going to get better
after the World Cup 2014" is was foreshadowing,
after 2014 the ENTIRE COUNTRY WENT DOWNHILL
then, we had Thiago Silva, the fucking TEAM
CAPTAIN SITTING ON TOP OF THE BALL CRYING
BC HE COULDN'T TAKE THE PRESSURE DURING
THE PENALTIES (the Neymar incident didn't even
happen yet) ANOTHER HUGE FORESHADOWING
after that we had the incident, Neymar gets really
badly hurt, the country is in SHAMBLES. Thiago is
ALSO OUT BECAUSE HE GOT THE 2ND YELLOW
CARD. no one knows what is going to happen, who is
going to replace him? Is he going to play ever again?
WHO IS GONNA BE OUR CAPTAIN?? WHERE IS
OUR LEADERSHIP?? We were feeling like the avengers after thanos’ snap.
SO Bernard Duarte, call sign
"happy legs" enters the
scene. Btw tumblr and twitter had a weird thing
going on with him and David Luiz. Fandom culture
entered Football like I've never seen and ppl started
shipping those two and it would create a mess post
7×1. This was the wonderful time where players were
treated like supernatural characters. Like Bernard is
tiny and everyone was very protective of him like
kpop fans are of their bias, David was huge, one was
a striker the other a defender.... you can tell where
this is going. (Btw I’m not excused from this crime, I was a 14 superwholockian, it was 2014, just check my 2014 to see some incredible evidence of the time’s zeitgeist)
Every sports journalist is begging for Bernard make
the starting 11, the game was going to be held in
Mineirão, where Bernard's team Atlético Mineiro
played who he would be playing
"at home" with the
huge majority of not only Brazil fans, but Atlético
fans. The game was on. He was going to save us all. We could trust him, we was young promising, had just won a major title with atlético and had his big break to European football. THIS was. IT. THIS WAS OUR ENDGAME.
AND OH, DID I TELL YOU GUYS DAVID LUIZ WAS GOING TO BE OUR CAPTAIN???
SO IT IS MATCH DAY, THE PLAYERS COME TO FIELD HOLDING NEYMAR’S JERSEY. IT’s TIME TO PLAY FOR YOUR LIFE. EVERYONE WAS BELIEVING ON A HAIL MARY. BERNARD COMPLETELY OUT OF POSITION, THE TEAM MENTAL STATE IN SHAMBLES, DAVID LUIZ ACTING LIKE A DEFENDER/OFFENSIVE MIDFIELDER BUT FUCK IT RIGHT? WE HAVE THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP.
and the unthinkable happens. The tragedy. The disaster, the oncoming storm, a train wreck that you just can’t stop starring, the commentators are so flabbergasted they can’t speak. We feel like we are experiencing a fever dream. When it ends, there are no tears, you can’t cry, just stare at the roller thing at the sidebar of the FIFA’s score stat’s thingy at your screen bc they couldn’t fit all German scores in one “box” and the lone honour goal from Oscar. Just silence, silence from the genocide of a nation’s hopes and dreams in short 20 minutes from the “seleção’s shutdown” when Germany scored their first 4 goals.
David is crying, saying he is still going to give happiness to his nation. The internet adopts him, some people call him the main villain. People are grieving. The seleção’s players are radio silence for DAYS until they drop a joint statement saying the still have game left - the 3rd place match against the Netherlands - where we were humiliated again. And the fear of Argentina winning the World Cup at our home??? we had to cheer for GERMANY, WHO PUBLIC HUMILIATED US, WIN THIS THING. The public sentiment about the seleção also changed a lot, a lot felt the the good old days were over and at the current generations, at the the generations to come; with disdain. It is only now, 8 years later, the the general public feels like they can trust and are happy with the seleção’s performance again.
So many expressions and pop culture bloomed from the 7x1. But when it comes to 7x1 veteran’s careers, many of them fell off the radar. David was one of the most criticised for the lost and it was a while before was respected again, but I think we went full circle coming back to Brazil to play for Flamengo. A lot of the not so notorious players just became infamous and their careers never recovered.

In light of brazils first world cup game today I'd like to share with everyone the Germany x Brazil 7-1 semifinals from the 2014 world cup and how morally DEVASTATING it was
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You ever do so poorly your coach immediately resigns and the country makes up a new idiom over it
Even our president at the time was like "guys that was so fucked up :("
