"dahlia and chandler were thrilled for me." cora said. "the others, i haven't exactly told or spoken to them about it but i'm sure my mum was disappointed she wasn't invited and amadeus was probably mad it wasn't the guy he wanted me to marry, but honestly their opinions don't matter to me anymore. they can think what they want. i'm finally happy."

“Damn. I can’t believe you actually did it…just went zero to sixty on the whole thing,” Rhys shook his head, a combination of shock and awe. They had both changed so much in the last several years, it was almost difficult to reconcile where they were then with their pasts. “What’d your family have to say about it all?”

"okay so i invited you out to lunch because one, we haven't seen each other in forever and two i have something to tell you." cora said. cora had not yet told rhys that she was married, actually only a few people knew but she knew she wanted rhys to be one of them.

He knew that there was some truth to that, he’d often have people coming in, chatting on and on about all of the rich holiday treats they’d indulged in. “You should start interviewing now, hire the ones that don’t ask too many questions,” he suggested, giving his shoulders a shrug. He weighed her question, debating how much he actually wanted to share. “Do you remember how we talked way back when we first met?” he asked without actually answering her question. “Something about love and all of that?”

“hiring people is always weird, but with business booming i need the help.” cora said. maybe she’d be able to find someone soon. honestly she wanted chnadler to help her, but he was still attached to the family so she doubted that was happening anytime soon. “yeah, what about it?” she asked. “feeling all smitten for someone?”

He gave Cora a second glance now, taking more time to take in the cheerful disposition and the seeming lack of effect his mood had on her. It wasn’t what he was used to– his moods usually dominated others. “Even ones you seem to have nothing in common with, sunshine?”

“i’m used to hanging out with people i have nothing in common with.” she said. she’d been raised around a whole family that had different views that her. the only thing they all had in common was that money gave people lots of power. cora’s opinion just differed in the fact it wasn’t always good. “just easier when the person is hot and not related to you.”

"yes. i eloped with james." cora said, watching rhys with hannah for a moment. "rhys, it was the most perfect thing ever. my brother was there and dahlia and james' band and it was so perfect. my dad wasn't there to ruin it. rhys, i'm married." she said.

Setting his glass back down after taking a sip, Rhys leaned forward to tuck the blanket a little more snuggly around Hannah as he listened to Cora. “You– what?” he looked up at her, his expression twisting into one of disbelief. Surely he just hadn’t heard her correctly. “You actually eloped?”

Rhys stirred his black tea, clutching it one hand as he listened to Cora, giving his head a slight nod. He had been feeling the opposite way lately, throwing himself into his work as the holidays seemed to creep in on him. “It’s your events that end up sending them to the fitness center to make my work busy,” he commented, though he certainly wasn’t complaining. “I’m sure there are a lot of people looking though.”

“that may be true, but it’s the wonderful chefs in this town that are truly to blame for it.” cora said. “without them people wouldn’t be eating nearly as much at my fancy events.” she said. “maybe, but i wouldn’t want just anyone. i need people i can trust and that’s hard to find around here.” she said. “how have you been rhys? doing alright?” she asked hestitantly.

“Bullshit,” Rhys snarled beneath his breath, turning abruptly on his heel and pushing through a couple that had been watching the dunk tank. As one of them complained, he shot them a venomous glare, “Piss off.” He needed the nearest drink stand, or just to leave this place for awhile. He was debating texting his mother, lying about an emergency that some far flung friend had had just so he could escape the town for awhile. So lost in his thoughts, he barely noticed the other in his way until they were practically underfoot. 

“woah hotstuff!” she said, eyeing rhys. why did he seem so angry at the moment. “who pissed in your cereal this morning? what’s wrong?” she asked. people seemed to be so stressed out recently, or maybe she was projecting her own feelings onto other people. she was stressed out. first jaxson had shown up in town, then chandler and now XAVIER. why was her whole fucking family showing up?
