When you set them up, the Sucuri scanner will scan the integrity status of all files in the WordPress core. In other words, it shows you where the virus is hiding.

The most common places where viruses nestle are plug-in themes and directories, upload directories, wp-config.php, wp-include directory, and .htaccess files.

If the theme's authenticity controller finds a suspicious or malicious code in your themes, it will show a details button next to the theme with the reference to the infected theme file. It will also show you the malicious code it has found.

Here you have two options for fixing the virus. You can manually remove the code or you can replace that file with the original file.

For example, if they have modified the WordPress core files, you can upload the WordPress files again by extracting them from a new download or you can replace all the files in the WordPress core.

The same goes for theme files. Download a new copy and replace the damaged files with new ones. Remember to do this only if you have not made changes to the WordPress theme codes otherwise you will lose those changes.

Repeat this step also for plugins if interested.

You will also need to make sure that the plugin's theme and folder match the original ones. Sometimes hackers add additional files that look like the original plugins in the name and it is easy to ignore them, such as: hell0.php, Adm1n.php, etc.

Keep repeating this step until the hack is gone.

Step 5. Check user permissions

Search the WordPress users section to make sure that only you and your trusted team members have administrator access to the site.

Step 6. Change your secret keys

Since version 3.1 came out, WordPress generates a set of security keys that encrypts your passwords. Now if a user has stolen your password, d is still logged on the site, he will remain logged because his cookies are valid. To disable cookies, you need to create a new set of secret keys. You need to generate a new security key and add it to your wp-config.php file.

Step 7. Change your passwords again

All you need to do is go to Settings → Reading → Discourage to stop search engines from indexing the site. Tick the box and you can forbid search bots from indexing your site.

Make sure that you check this box at least once a week. After all, anyone who has access to the CMS might accidentally click the box, which will undoubtedly have a negative effect on your campaign.

To note: Search engines may keep indexing your site even if you tick the ‘discourage’ box. So, if you really need to close the site from indexing, you’d better do it in the .htaccess or robots.txt files.

#3 Leave Your robots.txt File Entirely Open for Crawling

This one is the worst. Remember: Never ever leave your robots.txt file open for crawling because it can result in serious privacy issues. You can lose your site entirely through a data breach.

If you are a beginner, make sure you take the time to learn as much as possible about setting up and managing robots.txt files. Act immediately if you check robots.txt and see something like this: User-Agent: * Allow: / This means that search bots can access and crawl every web page on your site, including admin, login, cart, and dynamic pages (search and filters). Keep your customers’ personal pages closed and protected. You don’t want to be penalized for having dozens of spammy dynamic pages as well.

Either way, ensure that you disallow pages that should be blocked but allow pages that should be indexed. It sounds simple but takes time to learn.

#4 Forget Adding “nofollow” Tag Attribute to Outbound Links

SEOs know that links are still an important ranking factor. Unfortunately, they focus on backlinks and completely forget that their own sites pass link juice to other sites. What you should do is drive high-quality backlinks, but keep all the link power on your site.

So, your strategy is simple:

Scan your site using a site scanner tool (I use Xenu)

Sort links by address to locate outbound ones

Create an Excel file with all outbound links (or download a standard HTML report)

Check out every link in the list to implement “nofollow” tag attribute where necessary

Don’t be obsessed with the “nofollow” tag attribute, though. By saving all the link juice for yourself, you provoke other SEO professionals to nofollow you as well. In short, don’t abuse it.

#5 Fail to Check the Code in Validator

Your website consists of code, and the better this code is, the higher SERPs your site will potentially earn. This is because neat and clean code allows search crawlers to scan and index your site more efficiently, without leaving a single page behind.

So, everytime a new project is assigned to you to promote and optimize, make sure you check the code. You don’t have to be a developer. Just copy your site’s URL and paste it into the address field of The W3C Markup Validation Service. Then, ask a developer to fix the errors. The image below demonstrates a typical validator report:

While Google doesn’t penalize websites for having invalid bits of HTML and CSS, you’re better off running the validator tool anyway. After all, it doesn’t take much time but improves your site’s performance for both users and crawlers.

How Slenderman, the Internet's Horror Star, Crawled out of Creepypasta

On June 8, 2009, Eric Knudsen posted two black and white images he had Photoshopped to a forum called "Something Awful." The forum was hosting a photo manipulation contest and was taking submissions from artists who were creating fake "paranormal" images. Knudsen's original monster, whom he called Slenderman, was the breakaway star of the contest, inspiring writers and artists online to create a backstory for him.

Horror folklore that's written and shared online is colloquially called "creepypasta," and the term has become synonymous with the name Slenderman in recent years. Creepypasta authors are the contemporary version of kids telling ghost stories around a fire, and when their horror stories are copied and pasted onto websites like 4chan, Deviantart or Reddit, they're often edited or adjusted by new, anonymous authors. That's how fictional creatures like Slenderman end up with sprawling backstories and lore that everyone seems to agree on.

Across most creepypastas and fan art, Slenderman is a tall, thin, humanoid creature with unnaturally long limbs who stalks and preys on children. Sometimes he's depicted with extra arms, and he's always in a black suit and tie. He doesn't have facial features or hair. In an interview with the internet culture wiki Know Your Meme, Slenderman's creator, Knudsen, compared the monster to old mythical creatures whom most people still know from folklore today. "Before you had angels and succubi, and then ghosts and spirits, today we have shadow people and inter-dimensional beings. The Slenderman, and other newly created entities, are just the newest addition in the progression of a long, and very real, human tradition," Knudsen says.

Part of the fun of developing Slenderman online was originally in the shared "game" among creepypasta writers that what they were recounting was true. r/nosleep, a popular subreddit, asks that all users maintain that front in the interest of having creepy fun—redditors post original horror stories to the subreddit as if they are recounting something that's actually happened to them, and all commenters respond as if the stories are truthful. It's a widespread online game of roleplay, in a way, and that blending of reality and fantasy might be where teenage readers run into trouble.

In 2014, two 12-year-old girls in Milwaukee tried to stab their classmate, Bella, to death, and when they were apprehended, they told the authorities that they had hoped Slenderman would see their crime as an offering. New York Magazine reported in 2015 that the girls had explained to the police, "Bella’s death would earn them Slender’s protection. Afterward, they said, they would go to live with him in a mansion in the forest, morphing somehow into mini-monsters, not unlike the way humans who’ve been bitten by vampires are said to become vampires themselves."
