Copperband butterflyfish
Like many reef aquarists, I greatly appreciate Chelmon rostratus, the highly regarded copperband butterflyfish. Mine was a favorite reef tank inhabitant, hale and healthy. But the high fatalities now known to be suffered by this species, during long haul international shipping, make trade in the species particularly unethical. Chelmon butterflyfishes do not carry much in the way of excess muscle or fat, so they fare poorly on long distance, intercontinental flights and the subsequent, well meaning acclimatisation process.
Sadly, retail interest in this remarkable butterflyfish boomed, when it was widely yet falsely reported to consime the dreaded Aiptasia glass or triffid anemones. In fact, C. rostratus is a small crustacean and polychaete specialist, that has evolved peculiar, bendable jaws, to easily extract prey from crevices and worm tubes. Contrary to the reputation of the whole butterflyfish clade as coral eating fish, C. rostratus is not corallivorous in the least, and frankly lacks the short, robust jaws that are necessary for corallivorous butterflyfishes to tear living flesh from a coral skeleton with any efficiency.
True, by using its flexible, probing snout, some C. rostratus may learn to steal food from the mouths and stomachs of large cnidarian polyps. Such was presumably the behavior, that was tragically misidentified as predation on Aiptasia sp. Should the C. rostratus be healthy at the point of retail, it should eat defrosted meaty foods without fuss. They will also consume items such as fish flake. Naturally, given their specialisation, they are unsafe around small ornamental tubeworms, but they are completely safe with other fishes, clams, corals, and anemones.
This butterflyfish grows to 20 centimeters or 8 inches, but it is usually traded at a smaller size. Like many sympatric reef fishes, C. rostratus has a wide distribution, from the Ogasawara Islands and Taiwan, south to Queensland, Australia, and eastwards to the Solomon Islands, as well as westwards to the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Everywhere, it is native to shallow marine habitats, down to 25 meters, and frequents murky inshore reefs, bays, and even habitats, such as mangrove forests, with significant freshwater runoff. Juveniles tend to prefer shallower waters, and may be found among seagrasses, or in harbors. Sometimes they are stranded in the harsh, unstable environments, of tropical intertidal pools, a testament to the resilience of these butterflyfishes, which sadly does not extend, to intercontinental transportation.

The copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus), also known as the beaked coral fish, is found in reefs in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This butterflyfish is one of the three species that make up the genus Chelmon and all have long beaks. These fish are easily identified by the yellow banding and long snout. The young fish are similar in appearance to adult fish. Butterflyfish grow up to 20 cm in length. The fish appears taller than its length because of its compressed, deep-bodied form with a long dorsal and posterior fins as well as its vertical yellow stripes on a white background. The snout is long and slender, and the dark eye of the fish is less conspicuous than the dark eye-spot on the dorsal fin. The base of the tail features a dark band that runs perpendicular to the tail. Butterflyfish may be distinguished from the similar C. marginalis by their color pattern and number of dorsal fin rays. #aquarium #fish #aquascape #fishtank #aquariumhobby #reef #aquascaping #aquariumfish #freshwateraquarium #aquariums #plantedtank #aquariumlife #tropicalfish #reeftank #plantedaquarium #fishkeeping #cichlids #nature #freshwater #aquariumsofinstagram #cichlid #natureaquarium #bettafish #coral #aquascaper #ikanhias #freshwaterfish #reefaquarium #betta #cichlidtank
