Tw: lots of talk about na’vi sacrifices, blood, bloodletting, blood drinking and cannibalism mentioned, drowning, rebirth, death, child birth, meat.
A/N: I made a part two, to give more info on the Ay'Amhul clan. Some things I forgot to add in the first headcanon. Also some things I searched up the slanted words are things that I copied and pasted from a website. As well as the website if not.
P.s. I also let out some things I found out about what Mayans did to children, because it was pretty disturbing and I didn't want to burn you guys eyes with that knowledge.
Masterlist
When it comes to the birth of a baby, the Tsahik chooses a Na'vi to sacrifice. They're not just picked, the Tsahik picks either a specific type of na'vi in the clan. Once the baby is born, the na'vi is sacrificed by the Tsahik.
It is believed since Eywa has given them a life, then they must return a life. With the blood of the sacrifice it is painted on the baby, since the color red represents death and rebirth.
They also believed the blood was a kind of life-force, so that the baby could live a longer life or at least live long enough. The baby also receive a bead to their song cord.
Some Na'vi are raised for later becoming a sacrifice, the reason is because they believe that they had a dept with Eywa, and in order to pay that dept was by sacrificing since they believed that life continued due to the exchange of blood.
As for the sacrifices, if the heart is torn out of the chest and raised up to the sun it's to resemble that the sun will rise up in the morning. If the sacrifice is performed by being thrown into a volcano or being thrown into a body of water for one to drown, it resembles that it'll rain for the Maize to grow.
Besides sacrifices they also practice Bloodletting, since it is said that Blood is a life-source and a kind of nourishment from Eywa, so they'd drink it. Same with the flash/meat of the sacrifice.
They're also considered on being closer to Eywa, since their features are unusual, also because majority of the na'vis have blue skin.
The RDA had once tried to interact with them, but they got captured by the clan and were sacrificed due to being Demons who had angered Eywa.
They also play a sport which is a Ballgame, known as Pok-A-Tok. It is more of a ritual game since the team that loses is sacrificed in order to please Eywa and so that she gives the clan a good harvest.
They also have a device known as the Death Whistle, they're used to guide the dead safely to Eywa. Another way they're used is when it comes to War, as a form of protection to those who go into battle, but also incase they die. Another is to summon spirits or cause terror towards the enemy when it comes to the enemy in battle.
They also have marriage/wedding ceremonies, they performed by the Tsahik. The Ceremony takes place in the Conote where their spirit tree is located, also known as the heart of the forest.
the future groom should give the bride a “mahul”, which translates as a package of gifts. The family of the bride then needs to accept this present to continue with the wedding. Also, the future married couple needs to take a bath of temazcal, which is a traditional purification steam bath for the purification of their bodies and spirits with different herbs and plants.
They deposit the flowers, cacao, and seeds and put some water as a representation of planting a tree with the meaning of future growth together. They both wash their feet, as a symbol of trust and humility in the relationship. Finally, the Tsahik invites parents and the closest family to pray and offer the best wishes to the new couple. With music, the blow of the conch shell, drums, and copal, the newlyweds deliver a floral offering to the sea or cenote.
They love meat, they're the sole definition of Carnivores, they can either cook the meat or eat the meat raw with blood.
As long as Na'vi is alive, they can never be burned by their fire, after they die then their bodies will burn. They're also pretty flammable due to any strong kind of emotion, they don't need to be around fire, they can just combust into flames.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
At first I was like "nah, I don't". I'm a fan of several things and I have a LOT of headcanons but I wouldn't make a big mess defending it, but then it hit me. I would die defending that Santa Cecilia IS NOT PLACED IN OAXACA BUT MICHOACÁN.
I know it's headcanon of foreign people (and sometimes of locals) but you can't deny it, the clues are there! The appearance of the town (And let's remind that Santa Fé de la Laguna was a key inspiration for the town, and it's in Michoacán, who would guess it?)
The importance of Dia de Muertos (try to deny Pátzcuaro and Janitzio aren't some of the most popular destinations when it comes to Dia de Muertos and is very important celebration in there) and some others details. For example, in Miguel and The Amazing Alebrijes, MONARCH BUTTERFLIES MIGRATE TO Michoacán! The biggest reserve is in Michoacán! (of course, shares borders with Estado de México). They don't say the name, but its obvious Elena is talking about Monarch Butterflies.
OK, Oaxacan alebrijes (carved in copal wood) are very famous but alebrijes are, originally, made of cardboard (The technique is called Cartonería). Pedro Linares, creator of alebrijes concept, was a cartonero and lived in México City. And if this doesn't convince you and we get more strict, alebrijes aren't even related with Dia de Muertos. Creative liberty, I guess.
"But the Coco team went to Oaxaca and—"
Shut up, I'll hit you if you use that as excuse because they also traveled to Michoacán. Should I remind you that the artisan that made the irl replica of Héctor's guitar , Germán Vázquez, is michoacano? Also, Paracho (where he's from) is called world capital of guitars and very famous for, well, the guitars made there!
The Paracho (and Michoacán) government ever made an event (back in february, 2018) to recognize the importance of his work because it boosted tourism to that part of the state.
You can't deny it, the similarities are THERE!
Even the Land of the Dead has more similarities with streets of Guanajuato (another state), of buildings like Correo Mayor in Mexico City, but not with Oaxaca.
And i know this is NOT RELATED AT ALL but i just wanted to mention (because I always do) Ernesto's spanish voice actor, famous and beloved singer and composer Marco Antonio Solís is also from Michoacán and has a guitar shaped swimming pool fgfhjnm that's just an useless but funny fact dfghj
Ok, where were we? Yes. Every time I see a fic and the autor says they're in Oaxaca I stop reading (ok no) I roll my eyes thinking "Again? Really?". I remember a fic I started reading some time ago, and they placed it in Capula (Michoacán, famous for the Catrinas that are made in there) and I was like "Oh, nice" BUT THEN I continued reading and it described it like if it were a big city and not the shitty small town that actually is. Honestly, I laughed so hard, but at least someone tried to make something different. I always think Oaxaca is the easy solution when it comes to names of places to Coco fanfics because it has fame of being a small and poor place, asides of course, a very traditional and an important destination for tourism (Maybe, I'm just guessing). Anyway, you know I've never been a fan of fandom policing, and even if things aren't accurate to mexican reality I just let you guys go with it, you're making fan arts and fan fics, not a documental or something alike. We are having fun (I guess, I hope) and that's what it matters. But, as for me, sorry, nothing can't convince me otherwise, and as I said before, I'll hit every single person who tries to set Santa Cecilia in Oaxaca, I don't care if it's a headcanon but I'm willing to fight jdjsjs
#ok no#pixar coco#appa ask#santa cecilia#sorry I get angry every time i rant about this#maybe i secretly hate oaxaca and i don't realize (?)#Maybe I do hate it for allowing the selling of young girls for marriage and defending it as a traditional practice#but that's also a bit of a stretch#coco#look what you made me do Pengy (?)

🌸BELTANE☀️ begins today and lasts thru tomorrow.
Beltane is hands down my favorite sabbat to celebrate.
Beltane means “Godly fire”
It’s position on the wheel of the year marks the peak of spring and the dawning of summer.
Depending on how you celebrate and worship, Beltane celebrates the union of the god and goddess that created the earth and humans as we know it. For others, it represents the nourishing fertile energy on the earth right now. (Northern hemisphere) where flowers are in bloom, animals and insects are at their peak of makin babies, and life is flourishing.
However you celebrate, and whoever you worship, one thing is true, Beltane celebrates LIFE. Earth energy is at its peak, sexual energy is burning everywhere.
The Goddess at her peak fullness, the purest manifestation of growth and renewal.
Many traditional festivities include cleansing fires, hand fasting, “going a’maying” (I’ll get to that 😉 ) feasts, wish box and egg charms, baking for family and community.
What’s going a’maying? Glad you asked!
This was a thing for newlyweds or couples wishing to conceive children, going off into the woods, having sex and collecting various herbs and twigs and berries to adorn the home with to welcome fertility and abundance in the home.
Now, since I doubt most of you will be holding traditional celebrations of walking your cattle thru smoke and going to crowded bonfire parties- I’ll go over some modern ways to celebrate this holy day!
- divination with yourself and your spirit team reflecting on your goals. All sabbats hold strong spiritual energy and Beltane is one of the strongest days to connect with spirits.
- S E X!!! Sex with your lover(s) or yourself. Today is the absolute best day Sex Magick manifesting abundance, growth, BABIES**, wealth, prosperity. Today’s key element is primal energy and sexuality is one of the most primordial energies we have as humans.
- gardening! Assuming your agricultural zone is free from risk of freeze- go plant your shit today. I’ll be gardening all weekend getting my food forest ready for the grow season here in the valley of Oregon. A great task to include your kids with and teach them about growing your foods and herbs, what today is all about (the G rated version)
- baking and cooking and starting medicines.
Bake and cook offerings for your deities and your family. Make treats to share with others. Another great task to include with your children.
- cleaning and resetting your altar spaces.
- set up than ancestral altar and leave a plate for the spirits who protect you.
- leave offerings for the elemental spirits around you.
- make a wish box! Much like a “spell jar” or talisman, a wish box is a lucky charm we create today to reflect what our goals and wishes are for the coming year. Include a petition, herbs and berries and rocks, whatever tickles your fancy and keep this box on your altar or in your room as a physical reminder of the goals you are working for. Another great option for kid inclusion for today.
- make a fire! Safely of course- don’t start a wildfire. Let the smoke cleanse you.
Whatever you do today, I hope you enjoy the energy that is here this week. Beltane offers us the energetic support to achieve what we truly need and desire in this earthly realm. Life can be so hard and trying, and often defeating. Take time today to switch up your mindset from a scarcity mindset to an abundant mindset and give thanks for the good and the beauty the earth provides to us.
Goddesses: flower goddesses, fertility goddesses, hunt and cattle goddesses, fire goddesses, maiden mother and crone goddesses, love goddesses.
Gods: love gods, sexual gods, gods of the hunt, gods of fire, gods of the sun, gods of the forest and fatherhood.
Colors: pink, red, yellow, silver, green, white and brown.
Flowers and herbs: hawthorn, juniper, frankincense, ylang ylang, lilac, jasmine, neroli, copal.
Tell me folks, what are you doing today and tomorrow?

Underwater archaeologists have returned 52 pre-Hispanic ritual objects to the place where they were found: the bed of one of the two crater lakes of the Nevado de Toluca volcano.
Members of the underwater archaeology team at the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) deposited the mostly spherical and conical resin objects on the bed of the Lake of the Moon earlier this month.
The objects, believed to have been made by the Matlatzinca people between the 13th and 15th centuries and placed in the lake by pre-Hispanic priests, are stored in a specially-made container that allows water and sediment to flow over them. As a result, they are protected from deterioration.
The trove of objects is the first in situ underwater archaeological archive in Mexico, according to an INAH statement. The decision to preserve the objects in their place of origin complies with recommendations in the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
The objects were found at the Nevado de Toluca crater lake in 2007 and have been studied and analyzed for the past 13 years.
Enna Llabrés and Roberto Junco prepare the collection of artifacts for deposit on the lake bottom.
Enna Llabrés Torres, a researcher with the INAH underwater archaeology department who made the container in which the resin relics are stored, said that the objects could be removed for further study in the future as new technologies and methods of analysis emerge.
She explained that while the objects were studied over the past 13 years, they were stored underwater in conditions similar to those found at the Lake of the Moon, which is located more than 4,000 meters above sea level and has an average temperature of 3 C.
The conical objects measure 20-30 centimeters while the spherical ones are roughly the size of a baseball. INAH archaeologist Iris Hernández said that the Nevado de Toluca volcano has been considered a sacred site since pre-Hispanic times and for that reason, relics used in rituals and ceremonies have been found there.
She said that the conical objects – made out of resin of the copal tree – may have been specifically made to resemble the form of the volcano, located in modern day México state.
According to carbon dating tests conducted by experts at the National Autonomous University Institute of Physics, the ritual objects date back to between 1216 and 1445 AD.
The time period corresponds to the rule of the Matlatzinca people in the Valley of Toluca prior to their domination by the Mexicas.

Amber reveals long past climates
Recent work by a team at Innsbruck University analysed 538 samples of the golden gem with a wide range of ages, from the Triassic of 220 million years back to recent quaternary copal (an immature form of amber). They used carbon isotopes to tell them something about atmospheric compositions in the deep past, in particular about the proportion of oxygen in the air and how they changed during this long period. Amber was used because it changes little isotopically as it matures, serving as a useful proxy for something hard to measure by other means. Carbon 13 is taken in by plants in different proportions depending on the oxygen content of the atmosphere. Comparing the ratios of C12 to C13 in the samples allows the oxygen content to be deduced.
They were surprised to find that the air that dinosaurs breathed was alot less oxygen rich than had been supposed. Our current atmosphere contains 21% oxygen, while Mesozoic amber indicates a proportion of only 10-15% was present. Some have posited that high O2 levels might have been responsible for the gigantism of dinosaurs, as seems to have been the case for the huge insects of the Carboniferous, but this hypothesis is now cast in doubt.
More generally, low oxygen seems to correlate with high atmospheric carbon dioxide, and warmer climate, such as the hothouse world of the Mesozoic. The team suggests that high levels of volcanism may have fed CO2 into the air, causing a decrease in oxygen due to increased chemical weathering capturing it into oxides. They attribute the cooler climates that have prevailed since the later Eocene to a general decrease in volcanic activity.
