Will could still remembe`r the first time he felt the flutter in his belly of their son moving. He could remember laying on his back in bed while Matt slept and playing little games with their baby, touching a spot to see if the baby's kicks would follow. He'd loved that little boy since the moment his test came back showing he was pregnant. It wasn't easy to explain, of course, to any of his friends that he'd been hiding something, that he was trans, that he still had his uterus and oh, yeah, it was occupied by a little life.

Their son, Briar Jude Cooper was born a month early, on a broiling hot New York summer day, and he was screaming from the moment he was born. He had a big set of lungs for someone so small, and Will loved him so much. He'd given birth alone, Matt stuck at an emergency at work, so he spent the first six hours of Briar's life at his side, touching him gently in his warming bed. It was just Will and Briar, and no one was going to tear them apart. Right there, sitting at the warming bed's side, he swore that Briar would never feel lost or alone as long as he had Will in his life, and he would always have Will in his life.

Fast forward six years, Will and Matt had a messy break-up following Matt's continued infidelity, and Will had had enough. He packed up their son and returned to Chicago. He settles Briar into a new school, and he starts a new job at Chicago Med, and Matt doesn't bother them. It's just him and Briar, and that's enough. Jay dotes unendingly on his nephew, and Pat, who had barely spoken to Will since he'd come out as trans, welcomes Briar into the family easily, and they don't need Matthew Cooper.

Except Matt follows them and is claiming Will kidnapped their son, and he's fighting Will for custody, and Will's trying to balance taking care of his son, keeping Matt from taking him away, and also working full time as a doctor which already demands so much of his time and energy.

"You left with my son without even notifying me!" "I was doing what I thought was best for him. Instead of watching us rip each other apart, I brought him to his family who would actually care for him when I was at work." "If you'd let me into his life, I'd've -" "I begged you, Matt, before I left to show some kind of love and affection for him, and you refused to even see him, or watch him for an hour! I shouldn't have to ask you to be in his life at all." "You made it impossible for me to be in his life, especially when you lied to me in the first place!" "What are you talking about?" "You know what I'm talking about. You said you couldn't get pregnant, that you weren't looking to -" "What I said was that I was on birth control, Matt, and you, a doctor, should know that that isn't 100 percent effective. You didn't have any problems creating him with me, but the second I didn't get an abortion, you were pissed that I would dare have a uterus. You knew I was trans when we got together. You knew what that meant, and at the time that didn't seem to matter, until you could use it against me for your own gain." "That is not what I'm doing." "Isn't it? You're trying to use me being trans as a way to get custody of Briar, as if that suddenly can replace the absolute dog-shit way you've treated me and him for years. You've cheated on me with multiple people, including my own cousin, and you completely ignore me every single time I try to fix whatever is broken here. I'm tired. Briar's tired. We just want a break, Matt."

It takes weeks, months of deliberation, mediation, hearing after hearing, shuttled between courts to try and settle this matter. It's not until Matt's white collar crimes come out, his kickbacks from peddling an ineffective device, that Will finally gets full custody of his son. Briar was his, and his alone, and the state of Illinois agreed, recognizing that his fight was never going to stop. He was going to always be in Briar's corner, no matter what, for no matter how long.

Crockett and Will were known for a lot of things individually, but they were also two of the most trouble-making doctors in the ED. Will knew that, and he still found it hilarious that he’d found his way into Crockett’s bed, and even more importantly, his heart, considering Crockett was known as a playboy not to be tied down. Will had managed it, but he wasn’t sure how that had happened. It had started with a simple drink, and then two, and then a kiss in the corner, and then waking up in the morning in Crockett’s bed, his arms around Will’s waist while they slept. It had been slowly growing from sex and hookups to staying the night and having breakfast together in the morning that Crockett made. Will had never really left, to the point where he couldn’t remember the last time he’d been to his own apartment. It had happened, and now looking back, he sure didn’t understand it at all. 

He did know that he was lucky, and he wasn’t going to question it too hard because he didn’t want to tempt the world into taking Crockett away from him. He’d already pushed away so many people and watched his world fall apart, again and again, he couldn’t imagine losing Crockett, too.

“You know I adore every single part of you from the top of your head to the tip of your toes, but what the hell were you thinking?” Crockett said, and Will paused in the middle of carrying a big bag full of takeout into the lounge. He could barely see over the top of the bag, but what he could see was Crockett’s disbelieving face. “What is that? What are you doing?”

“I, okay, this looks insane. Let me put these down,” Will said, and he hurried through the doorway and into the space. He put the bag down on the table, and then carefully pulled out the containers and laid them out across the surface. “Okay, look, I know this is probably stupid, but I fucked up everything so bad recently, and I made everyone’s lives worse, and –”

“So, you’re bribing them with takeout?”

“No, okay, it’s not bribery. It’s an apology. With the way that the entire thing went down with Matt and the, the investigation, and everyone being looked into now, I can’t help but feel responsible.”

“Baby, you didn’t cause the FBI to look into all of us. That was Matt and Vasik’s doing. You exposing the shit they were up to doesn’t mean that you’re at fault here. So, you don’t have to make it up to anyone.” 

“Yeah, I know that technically but they don’t seem to think that. With everyone under scrutiny, they’re focusing that frustration on me, and I just want them not to hate me, I guess?”

“Oh, no one hates you, Will.”

“I know that but it doesn’t feel that way. It feels like no one wants to be around me, and I don’t want them to feel like they can’t trust me. Working beside them is harder when they don’t think I’m on their side.”

“It’s inconvenient, yes, but what Matt was doing isn’t your fault,” Crockett said, and there was a heaviness to his voice that Will knew. They weren’t just talking about the kickbacks anymore, or the fallout from the investigation. 

“I know that,” Will said.

“Do you? Because you haven’t really seemed okay,” his boyfriend said, stepping up beside him. “You haven’t kissed me today, or looked at me.”

Will let out a breath.

“It’s just, it’s a lot,” Will said, “dealing with everyone’s attitudes, and the attention from the press and law enforcement. I have to go to trial to testify, and everyone thinks that I’m some kind of snitch now. Plus, you know, everything with Matt.”

He didn’t expand, even though he knew they had to talk about it. 

“Will,” Crockett said, and he stepped closer to Will so their arms were brushing. “You didn’t cheat on me.”

“He kissed me,” Will said, “and I didn’t stop him. How is that not –”

“Look at me, sweetie,” Crockett said, and Will lifted his eyes from where he was staring at his hands on the container of wings he’d set out. “You did not cheat on me. He had you against the wall, and you couldn’t fight back. That’s not cheating.”

Will made a sound, small and weak, in the back of his throat, and Crockett slowly slipped his hand into Will’s. 

“I could have fought back,” Will said. “I should have pushed him away before he even got that close. I knew what he wanted from me, the same thing he’s always wanted, the only thing he’s ever thought I’m good for, and I knew that’s what he was angling for in that bathroom. I just, I thought I could use it, I guess. I thought I could leverage it, and then, he was kissing me, and I couldn’t – I couldn’t think, I was so scared, and panicked, but I should have known.”

“Will, baby, look at me, and take a deep breath. Matt is locked up, and he can’t hurt you.”

Will forced himself to take in a long, steady breath, fighting the oncoming hyperventilation, and then he took another, and another. He leaned into Crockett and grumbled under his breath.

“I know,” Crockett agreed. “I just need you to hear me when I say this, okay? I know that you’re hurting, and I know that you feel guilty for what happened, but I need you to listen. I do not blame you for anything that went down. He took advantage of you, and the history that you have, and he forced you into a position that you weren’t comfortable with because he knew he could. He’s the problem here. He’s the one who kissed you when he knew you had a boyfriend, and while he was married. He’s the one who was upselling the Vas-COM for the kickback when he knew that it was illegal. Everything Matt Cooper did he did of his own free will, and he deserves the consequences for that. You, however, were manipulated into a situation you shouldn’t have been in, and that’s on Ms. Goodwin for using you like that. You are not the one who should be facing any kind of fallout here.”

Will sighed and tilted his head back as he rested his temple on Crockett’s shoulder.

“So, you’re really not upset about Matt kissing me?”

“I’m upset, yeah, but not at you. At him.”

“You promise?” Will asked.

“I promise, sweetheart.”

“Okay,” Will said, and he kissed Crockett, slow, easy, and full of a smile he hadn’t felt in a while. “I love you, you know that?”

“I do know that,” Crockett said, “and I am so lucky to get to love you, too.”

“I’m going to let everyone know lunch is on me, but, uhm, thank you. I forget sometimes that I can lean on you because I’m afraid it’ll scare you away, but thank you for not, you know, letting me hide, and knowing when I’m being obtuse.”

“You’re not being obtuse, you just need a little common sense filter sometimes and that’s okay, but even if you were being obtuse, I will always be here when you need me, baby. Just, maybe, talk to me before you buy an army of takeout containers next time, yeah? See if we can save your bank account the humiliation.”

“Yeah, okay, you’ve got yourself a deal, mister,” he chuckled and kissed Crockett just one more time because he could, and he wanted to.

It was strong enough to linger on his sheets, floral and light and really not bad. I love a single brain cell thought! So, okay, here's a headcanon that @holdendadcliffe and I have created since s7 aired: Matt Cooper and Will fucked. They used to hook up when Matt and Will were in college together, while Matt was dating Will's cousin, Moira, and they stopped seeing each other because Will found out that Matt was dating Moira, and he didn't want to be a dirty secret anymore. So! Matt does not have an alpha energy to him, I think more beta, so he's definitely tried. And he doesn't care about presentation, just that his partner treats him as an equal, who no one really did, not before Connor!
