I'm definitely not a dressmaker in any way, but I love altering clothes to fit my own aesthetic and I recommend buying second hand as much as possible! try to se clothes as plain fabric too. I also think it's important to know not to give up? Keep trying and to know its harder to make clothes fit properly when you don't own a dress form, BUT I've seen people make one from ductape so if ur interested you could watch here and here if you already own a dressform but it's not up to size:)
Also! I totally think buying patterns from easy sellers is a good starting point if you want to make something from scratch, but if it's within your bucket I've seen this sewing system pattern thingy (?( from lutterloh system that it's AMAZING like it works really well!
And lastly i recommend following these content creators <3
Annika Vicotria on Youtube
They have different tutorial depending on the difficulty of the sewing project, and also explains how to make patterns of clothes you already own!
Coolirpa on YouTube, IG, Tiktok
Similar as Annika, April has tons of tutorials beginner friendly and also shares tips from time to time on how to use certain fabrics and stuff
BlueprintDIY on YouTube, IG, Tiktok
Angelina is one of my fav creators bc she tends to remake clothes from very questionable items you wouldn't think are fashionable! She also has a playlist on tips for beginners I totally recommend. I also believe she has a community in Facebook where tons of other small creators share tips and all<3
Withwendy on YouTube, IG, Tiktok
I personally like that Wendy has many thrift flips and dissects expensive style clothing into patterns so it's easier to understand and to remake!
dressmaking and general likee. fashion craft tips for a girl in need? i crochet fairly well and used to cross stitch but really want to get more into fashion, especially making and altering clothes - if anyone knows any tips that would be wonderful

This video has been highly requested for so long! I hope this helps you out and clears some confusion you had about tracing your clothes and patternmaking :)
This is how I trace my clothes to create patterns. In no way am I teaching you professionally how to patternmake. If you want to get even more technical, I recommend purchasing a patternmaking book or taking a class.

Absolutely IN LOVE with Coolirpa on YT, she's so cute and creative, everything she makes from scratch is so fucken pretty I'm in awe of her
And even when I watched a thrifted transformation it wasn't like something incredibly oversized, she just adjusted things to fit better or to make it more fun

There's this DIY fashion YouTuber I am subscribed to and she just reminded me of how I wish the show would depict Marinette actually making dresses and tops like the aspiring fashion designer she is.
Give her a follow because she makes some cute clothes and gives me the fashion designer Marinette vibes I long for.

Thoughts on clothing thrift flips from someone who isn't a size 2
So I love thrifted transformations, especially Coolirpa, I think she is absolutely adorable and incredibly talented. However, I have noticed a bit of an annoying trend. Most of the YouTubers or whoever who do this tend to be on the smaller side. And a lot of the time, they will simply buy an x large dress and use it for fabric to turn it into something amazing. You don't have that option when you are above say a size 10. I just went thrifting and the biggest way I am able to transform a piece I bought is take it from a long skirt to a short button up skirt. It's not as drastic, because you can't cut a pattern out of an x large dress to make clothes when you are an x large. If I wasn't such an anxious self conscious piece of shit, I'd really consider making videos of some of the thrift flips I do as a plus size women but for now here's my annoying ramblings.

Dresses Made Out of Other Things (Part 1)
Recently, April Yang (@/coolirpa) made a video where she made a dress out of a real nice white-and-gold curtain for the 50th episode of her “Thrifted Transformations” series. This video was the inspiration for this week’s blog posts.

I thought that this dress was very cute and perfect for the spring and summer.

Waiting for some skinny person or annoying plus sized person to argue that she uses plus size clothing plus sized people wouldn’t even wear to justify her using plus sized clothes to make her transformations.
That dress is beautiful and “the cut” that she says doesn’t do the dress justice would look amazing on the body it was actually built for. The dress is amazing it’s the body that doesn’t do it justice in actuality.

I know everyone says fat people should just make their own clothes but I'm more afraid of not having my measurements in the pattern books

How to make a custom dress form:
If you're looking to save money on sewing tools or if you can't find a mannequin in your size, please know you can make your own custom dress form out of an old t-shirt, ducktape, and old pillow stuffing (or anything else you have lying around that could serve as stuffing).
If you're more of a visual learner, here's a video by Coolirpa demonstrating how to do this.
