He’d chosen to leave. The Christmas lights his stepfather insists he’ll take down every year but never does. The mailbox he’d inscribed in Sharpie when he was nine: JENKINS MAIL!!! The scent of his mother’s pinwheel cookies in the oven. His grandmother’s muttering as she fills out a crossword. His little brother Mika who was six and in a booster seat when he left. Time goes by so slowly, but does it? The day Jeremiah left for the west, he told his mother he knew what he was doing, what he wanted so far from home.
