A major difficulty of doing a portrait project of transgender and non-binary people is just to get people willing to out themselves and stand in front of the camera. I try to protect their privacy by only using their first names or pseudonyms. Nevertheless the project progress is slow and there is a dearth of trans people of colors in the project. I am really glad that Sera agrees to be photographed. There are times when I trip the shutter, I think to myself: "This shot is it." Then of course qualified it by thinking, as long as I ddin't miss the focus, exposure, or developing the film later... Well, I know I got the shot. Second time I photographed Andry for this project. First time two years ago (when one does long term project, time can fly...) The Legacy of DAW. I sneaked in one of Mr. Martin famed Hugos Losers' Party a couple years ago (I hope that doesn't get me into a blacklist now...) looking for potential people who might join my project. Then I noticed the name badge. Being fairly ignorant of a lot of things, I had to confer with my wife to make sure ("THAT is Wollheim, as in DAW right?"). I finally get to photograph Ms. Wollheim 2 years after we first met. Betsy is super sweet and full of stories. As her being a 4th generation New Yorker and as I also had grown up in NYC, we had a lot of things to chitchat about, including our love for photography (she did graduate work in that), and arts, especially Michael Whelan's etc. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that without DAW (Donald A. Wollheim and his wife Elsie), we probably would not have such a vibrant paperback market for science fiction and fantasy books (google it). Betsy and her business partner Sheila Gilbert continue to run the publishing powerhouse. Vania Soto, one of the Mexicanx artists that John Picacio and others fundraised to Worldcon 76 in San Jose. John started the #mexicanxinitiative to bring more Mexican artists to the worldcon.
