🌷 Interest Check Results!

Thank you for over 450+ responses to our interest check—you've taken the legal world by storm! We'll be moving forward with a physical zine and merch for this project and applications open tomorrow, April 5th!

The majority of people who responded were interested in buying the project, followed by contributing as a page artist!

The majority of responders were very excited about this project (and so are we)!!

This will be a for-charity project! We'll be announcing our chosen charity at a later date!

The majority of responders were interested in both a physical and digital release, so we'll be having both! Our physical book will be B5!

We had a lot of interest in physical merch! The top five items people were interested in were charms, prints, sticker sheets, enamel pins, and die-cut stickers!

We're thrilled that so many people are excited to bring this project to life with us and celebrate all the incredible women of Ace Attorney!

hello! just asking what the responsibilities of a mod would be, and could someone be both contributor and mod?

Mods will be able to create a piece if they wish to, however they won’t get any first picks for topics and are not obligated to make a piece for the zine.

Art mods will follow up with the artists and make sure all the pieces are finished in time and such. Writing mods will do the same with writers, however they’ll also be doing spell checks, so I’ll have one or two more of those since their workload is a bit heavier. As for general mods, they’ll be helping me out on the logistics side of things, such as announcements and making sure people are acting respectfully in the discord. Unfortunately I’m busy with uni and can’t do all the general stuff on my own 😭

I’ve scheduled the applications to post at 7:30 AM Eastern time tomorrow (Nov. 12th). I will still be in a class at that point, but I’d like to not waste too much of the day since I know timezones are annoying and I said I was releasing it on the 12th. I’ll be available to answer questions a few hours later, the time will depend on how long my lecture lasts :,)

Tomorrow (March 10th) Mod Applications open! We have a new section in our carrd that gives you everything you need to know about the application process, and a beautifully organized list that specifically talks about Mod Applications- check it out!

Once again, the Mod Applications will be open for a week- from March 10 to March 17.

After we have gotten the Mods set up, we'll send out the link for contributor applications on April 1, and they will be open all month until May 1. Trust me, it will come sooner than you think (especially if you feel like blackmailing Blendin Blandin for his time tape)!

In the meantime, check out some questions and answers here (with more to come in the next couple of days!) and stay tuned for applications and announcements!

Interest Check Results

Thank you so much for 134 replies! We're pleased to announce that we will be proceeding with our current vision for the zine.

Tea related things were popular choices for the limited edition item. Stickers, pins, and prints were popular physical merch items. Suggestions from the IC included a wax seal, standee, and letter opener! Your charity suggestions will be shortlisted for contributors to vote on.

Apps will be opening TOMORROW - prepare by checking out our guidelines and application details.

Should we expect acceptance/rejection emails tomorrow (going off the old schedule +1 month) or in a week's time (going off the announcement post +1 month)? Are we able to have an update on the contributors timeline please? And (hopefully not but) if we have a conflict, how do we withdraw our application? Thanks for your help!

Per our post regarding pushing things back, it will likely be a week or two until all acceptance emails go out (they will be sent in batches). Once the emails start being sent, the timeline will be updated!

Of course we will take into consideration that we saw ourselves forced to push things back a bit, when we update the timeline. Everyone still interested in participating will have plenty enough time to work on their pieces, and on top of that they will have time extensions should they need them.

I can still offer a tentative schedule if that helps you and everyone interested in it, but keep in mind that we'll have more precise dates once we start contacting everyone who applied.

If by the time emails go out you don't think you'll be able to be part of the zine (and you were accepted), you can let us know by replying to the email in question.

Updates:

Shipping: The books arrived in 6 boxes yesterday, and the Canadian mod team started dismantling, inspecting, and preparing, beginning with the first printing batch and the contributor copies. We’ll have some photographs tomorrow, just ensuring that names and addresses do not appear in the photos we’ve taken. One box had some damaged books, with moderate-to-severe cover folds, and some form of oil damage on three books, likely from the printing press. We’re checking to see if the printer provided a few extra copies beyond our print order, and will alert them once we have a final tally of damages. This will not impact the shipment of the first printing, and from our rough estimate, it shouldn’t impact any of the existing purchases for the second printing. Again, we’ll have an update on that as soon as we’ve finalized a careful examination of the remaining boxes. The books should go out on their journey Monday/Tuesday. Second Printing: As indicated in the shipping section, we’re going to take a good count and quality inspection of the remaining unopened boxes to ensure we have enough copies to fulfill our 100-copy reprint. We will adjust numbers on the site if we do not have enough to satisfy, and we will be checking in with the printer to at least give them a heads-up. Deluxe editions are awaiting the arrival of our locally-printed vinyl stickers, which should only take a few more days. They should be prepared for shipment by the end of shipping First Printing.

Contributor Applications: We received so many applications that we will need to continue sending out acceptances, deferrals, or rejections into tomorrow. Mod Egon made a big push on those, and we have about 16 more emails to send out. For applicants who receive a rejection email, we’re also making a point of indicating strengths, encouragements, and areas we’d like to see focus on for future portfolios. While this makes sending out the emails a little slower than a typical form letter, we want to make sure that each applicant is treated like a person throughout all this, that they aren’t disheartened by the decision, and that they reapply with enthusiasm and growth. That wraps up our updates for this evening, but I look forward to sharing some photos and progress updates for the last push of this volume. Soon, we’ll announce our list of Vol 2 contributors, and we’ll begin readying the presses for another amazing edition of this labour of love!

That being said, thank you to everyone who sent in your questions! We’re going to answer everything as thoroughly as we can but if you have question that isn’t answered below our asks are always open!  Also, don’t forget contributor apps open up tomorrow!

Will the zine be physical, digital, or both?

Both! The zine will be printed and sold physically but a digital pdf version will also be available to purchase for anyone who would prefer it. 

I've never done a zine before, how do they work ?

Every zine is a little bit different but they all follow the same general format.  Right now we’re in the “interest check” stage which means we’re asking the community what kind of products they want to see and gauging the potential success of the project. Things are looking great so the next step is contributor applications. Once all the contributors have been decided we then go into the creation period, which is several months long, where everyone works on their part of the project. If you’re selected as a contributor you will be asked to keep your work a secret and refrain from posting it publicly until the project is over. Once the final deadline is reached all the contributors hand in their completed work and the mod team will compile everything and format it all for manufacturing. During this time public pre-orders will be opened up and anyone who is interested can pre-order the products while we wait for the manufacturing to be fulfilled. After that just comes shipping and its all done from there! With some zines there's open sales or a second round of pre-orders but we currently aren’t making any decisions one whether or not that will be the case for us. 

Is there going to be a submission process to decide who is a part of the zine?

Yes! We’re going to be opening up applications for the entire month of December for artists and writers to apply. In the first week of January we’ll send out either an acceptance or denial letter to everyone who applies so you wont be left in the dark about whether or not you’ll be a contributor.

How do you apply to be a contributor?

We’ll make a post on December 1st with a link to the applications! Just fill it out and submit it before the application deadline (December 31st).

What will be needed to apply?

There will be separate applications for page artists, merch artists, and writers. You’re just going to be asked to send us samples of work you already have done.  You can apply to multiple positions but please note that you can only be accepted for one.

Writers: One completed fan fiction. It doesn’t have to be specifically Bumbleby but it does need to be RWBY so we can gauge your characterization. Writers are going to be limited to 3k words so try to keep your sample in that ball park. You’ll get the opportunity to link to your AO3 (or wherever you prefer to host your fics) so if you have longer works you’d like us to take note of don’t worry. But we want to know you’ll be able to make a complete story within that restriction so if all your fics are the length of novels there's a chance you could be passed up for another writer who can confidently stay below 3k. When it comes to your sample, the shorter the better!

Page artists: You’re going to be asked to submit 3 completed illustrations. “Completed” is subjective and we will be taking into account that there a stylistic variances. What we’re trying to gauge is what the final product you’ll be making for our zine will look like. So make sure you highlight the best 3 pieces you have that fits what you think that would look like. You’ll have the opportunity to link to social media (or wherever you prefer to host your artwork) so don’t worry if you have other pieces you’d like us to see as well. The page artist app will also ask if you’re interested in being a merch artist so if you want to be considered for both only will out this one application with all your samples! 

Merch artists: You will also be asked to provide 3 samples of your work. If you have any already manufactured merch then pictures of those designs would be priority for us to see. But if you’ve never made merch before, you’re not immediately disqualified! Instead send us examples of work you’ve done that you think would be good merch. It doesn't matter if its pins, charms, shirts, or whatever. We just want to see what your design sense is. And just like the other applications you will have the opportunity to link to other work for us to see as well. 

What are the requirements for the final zine pieces?

Writers are going to be expected to make a completed fic between 2-3k words. 

Page artists will be asked to make a completed illustration. They will have a choice between a single page, a double page spread, or a short multi-page comic. Please note that slots for multi-page comics and double page spreads are limited so if that's something you’d like to do make sure you ask right away. When they’re gone, they’re gone.

Merch artists will have their choice of what they want to design. The merch team is expected to be relatively small and collaborative but more details about that will be discussed with the accepted contributors. 

Will contributors be given prompts on what to create?

Nope! While some zines are themed ours is not. Instead we’re more interested in having a diverse pool of styles and ideas. You can work in canon or an AU! Once accepted we will ask you to make a list of your top three ideas you want to work on and we will be approving one for you off that list. This is just to make sure we don't coincidentally end up with too many similar ideas. In the event that two people submit similar concepts for their first choice, the theme will be approved on a first come first serve basis. The only restriction is that this zine is rated PG-13, so nothing too mature will be approved. Writers you will be allowed to have swear words in your pieces as long as its not too aggressive.

Where can I find more information on the products?

There isn't any information yet! This is a highly collaborative process and so we’re waiting for the interest check deadline to make sure we’re producing products the the community wants to see.  Frankly, the results are heavily skewed and we can pretty much tell what the final decisions are going to be already but, out of fairness for anyone who hasn’t filled out the form yet, we’re going to wait to announce anything until after the interest check is formally closed! Previews of everything being made will be posted periodically throughout our creation period so give us a follow and keep an eye on our announcements to catch a glimpse of the actual products as they’re being made!

Should I participate in this? 

That’s up to you! We’re going to be accepting roughly 30-40 artists and 5 writers. How competitive it will be to get accepted is dependent entirely upon how many people end up applying (and we have no idea how many that’ll be!) But if you’re interested then we’d love for you to apply!
