"We in the villages and you in the quilombos make paths that are sometimes not even a meter wide. And these paths are used by animals, jaguars, armadillos and people. Everyone living in the environment passes along these paths without conflict, without attacking each other. But then the colonialists come along and widen these paths, making them six meters wide, and then only cars pass through. No more people, no more pigs or jaguars. How is it that on our roads, which are only one meter long, everything fits, and on theirs, which are six meters long, only one car fits?" an indigenous woman once asked me. The indigenous people of Brazil lived in a system of polytheistic cosmology. They lived integrated cosmologically, they didn't live humanistically. Then the Portuguese arrived with their humanities and tried to apply them to the cosmologies of our peoples. It didn't work. And so counter-colonialism emerged. Counter-colonialism is simple: you want to colonize me and I don't accept you colonizing me, I defend myself. Counter-colonialism is a different way of life from colonialism.
