The Long Island Museum

Located on Route 25A in Stony Brook and a short distance from the still-running Grist Mill and the historic Three Village Inn, the Long Island Museum offers visitors an immersion into the area’s rural past through three modern exhibition buildings and five authentic structures sprawled across a nine-acre campus. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1978 because of its excellence in exhibitions, programs, and collection care, and one of the country’s few Smithsonian affiliates, it displays American history and art with a Long Island connection. Tracing its origins to the Suffolk Museum, whose original Christine Street building stills stands today, it was established to preserve, exhibit, and interpret artefacts by five founding members at the end of the Great Depression: Ward Melville; his wife, Dorothy Bigelow Melville; Robert Cushman Murphy, a prominent naturalist; Winfred Curtis, a local doctor; and O. C. Lemphert, an insurance broker. A growing collection, along with the addition of carriages in 1952, soon prompted the search for new headquarters, which took form as the History Museum on one side of Route 25A. New to the then-named “Museums at Stony Brook,” it was old to the area. The site was once the location of the D. T. Bayles Lumber Mill, whose lineage stretches back to 1874 and which operated until 1955. Melville purchased the building at that time. “Ward Melville always wanted Stony Brook to be a village similar to the ones found in New England,” according to the Long Island Museum’s website. “The Long Island Museum was inspired by this premise and museum grounds soon resembled a New England village as local historic buildings were carefully tucked onto the grounds… Since 1939, the museum has grown to become a leading institution on Long Island and the only Smithsonian affiliate in the region.” THE HISTORY MUSEUM The History Museum, which serves as the Visitor’s Center and gift shop, is the location of changing art exhibitions. Its most recent “Fire and Form: New Directions in Glass,” for instance, encompassed some fifty works by eight contemporary artists, whose variety of approaches, inspirations, and starting points demonstrated the near-infinite nature of sculptural creation. The separate Cowles Gallery, named after Sharon Cowles, who once lived next to Dorothy and Ward Melville and recently made a significant contribution to the museum, showcases works from its permanent collection. THE DOROTHY AND WARD MELVILLE CARRIAGE MUSEUM Cornerstone of the Long Island Museum complex, which is located across Route 25A, the 40,000-square-foot Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage Museum occupies the site of the former Stony Brook Hotel and depicts the pre-motorized purposetime era by means of more than a hundred horse-drawn vehicles displayed in eight galleries. Its centerpiece, which is visible as soon as the visitor enters the building, is the “Grace Darling,” a 45-passenger, beautifully decorated omnibus originally pulled by a half-dozen horses. Richly upholstered and spring-provisioned to reduce wheel impacts on unpaved trails, it was employed on excursions to Coastal Maine between the 1880s and the early-20th century. The “Going Places” Gallery features carriages that were commonly used on Long Island, along with a fiber optic map that illustrates the development of regional transportation routes. The Wells Fargo Coach, one of its exhibits, is representative of the vehicles used by Wells Fargo and Company, whose transportation services were vital to the country’s westward expansion. Inaugurating overland passenger service in April of 1887, it assessed the then-astronomical fare of $275.00 for the Sacramento, California, to Omaha, Nebraska, route. The “Carriage Exhibition” Gallery, based upon the 1893 World’s Fair transportation building, highlights the opulence wealth could inject into a carriage.

“I thought we were going home.”

“No,” I say gently. “Remember we talked about this? Home is going to need work. Construction work. It will take a long time. In the meantime, we’re going to stay at the inn.”

Her face turns red. I’ve seen this color before. Exactly one time before.

We were at the wake for her parents. She had made it through the funeral with grave obedience. Stand here. Walk there. Say goodbye. All the times when I would have expected her to rage, she held her composure. It was only at the end, when families gathered at the Coach House, when they offered empty words of consolation and casseroles, that she lost it.

“Get out,” she had screamed, her face red and splotchy, tears leaking down her cheeks. No one could console her. No one could reprimand her. In the end they left, one by one, darting glances of worry between me and her. In the hollow house, once everyone had gone, she beat her fists against me and sobbed into my chest for hours. Until she fell asleep in my arms.

She looks the same way now. Mutinous. Angry.

“I want Kitten.”

Despite my general ineptitude as a guardian, I’ve tried. I’ve read books and listened to podcasts. Don’t raise your voice, they say. Lower your voice, and the child will mimic you. “We can’t go home,” I say, my words quiet. “There’s yellow tape everywhere. It’s a crime scene.”

This, despite the books and the podcasts, is the wrong thing to say. I know it when her eyes turn wide. I see the whites around her blue pupils. Her little nostrils flare. “No,” she says. “No. No. I’m not going anywhere else. I’m going home.”

We’re seconds away from the edge. I can see the waterfall—the long drop and the sharp rocks at the bottom, but I don’t have a fucking paddle.

I’d fight a goddamn army for her. I’d dive under an eighteen-wheeler if it would keep her safe, but I can’t protect her from false hope.

“Your mother always knows where you are,” Jane says, reaching back. After a short pause, Paige holds her hand. They stay like that, linked. “She loves you, wherever she is. Wherever you are. Nothing can stop that. Not a fire, not the ocean, nothing.”

A sniffle. A sob. And then Paige does break.

A Century of Glamour Ghouls: 1960s

The Movie

Sometime in the late 19th century, somewhere east of France, those damned dapper, aristocratic vampires are at it again. Two years after Horror of Dracula (1958) was a smash hit for Hammer Film Productions, The Brides of Dracula (1960) was produced. Dracula didn’t rise from the grave for this one, but Van Helsing continues on his quest to wipe out his blood-sucking kin.

The film begins when Marianne Danielle (Yvonne Monlaur), a deportment teacher from Paris, encounters coach trouble en route to a new job. Stranded at the village inn, Marianne meets the Baroness Meinster who invites her to stay the night at her chateau. Marianne soon discovers that the Baroness has been keeping a secret; the Baroness’ “ill” son is locked up in his own wing of the chateau. Misunderstanding the nature of the Baron’s affliction Marianne executes a plan to set him free. The Baron then murders his own mother before escaping into the night. Marianne, distraught at being left behind, flees through the woods where she is found in passed out in shock and exhaustion by Dr. Van Helsing, who is investigating rumors around the Meinster family. A rash of strange murders break out in the village and Van Helsing closes in on the Baron. Unbeknownst to Van Helsing, Marianne has agreed to marry the Baron, still not aware that he is a vampire.

When Hammer began producing their own set of adaptations of the classic movie monsters, they established a colorful gothic universe that stretched well beyond the initial characters, scenarios, and stories. Brides sets the tone for all of the Hammer vampire films that followed. They’re stylish period pieces, though which period can be a little muddy giving the films an added fantastical quality. They have a pronounced gothic flair.

While no Hammer film is absent of camp, their first decade of horror was a bit more reserved in style and content. Hammer bucked censors from the start with The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) when they not only didn’t fret an X rating, but changed the title of the film to publicize that X. It wouldn’t be until the end of the 1960s that Hammer would push for the pulpy provocative content, nudity, and lesbianism closely associated with the later Hammer vampire films, but the seeds for that progression (or regression depending on how you look at it) are already visible in Brides.

The Look

A hallmark of Hammer horror is glossy glam taking precedent over historical accuracy in costuming and makeup design. Marianne is no exception.

The Clothes

The film is roughly set at the end of the 19th century and Marianne’s costuming doesn’t reflect that exactly but it’s quite consistent throughout the film.

Marianne is always in long dresses, with long tapered sleeves and puffy shoulders. Most of her collars make a high v. Marianne is often costumed in deep colors (warm grey with red detailing, forest green, crimson, etc.) and velvety fabrics.

This contrasts her from the Meinsters, who are typically costumed in cool grayish and purple shades and often in fussier fabrics like silk and embellished lace.

(In addition, when people encounter the Baron for the first time either to get vamped or put in his thrall, they’re usually wearing a cool purple shade.)

She also has the best winter coat I’ve ever seen in my life and if anyone knows where I can get this exact coat HMU.

For the daytime look, I wanted to translate the Marianne costuming philosophy into something more contemporary. I didn’t succeed very well with colors, but hey. I chose a knit button-up top with lace detailing and a little puff at the sleeves and a velvet mini skirt. To add some deep colors to the look, I wore purple tights (though the camera didn’t pick up the hue well).

For the full cosplay, I stuck with a velvet skirt (ideally it’d be ankle-length, but I don’t have many ankle-length skirts). This time I paired it with a cream-colored high-necked blouse under a black fitted blazer that I tucked into the skirt, trying to mimic the style of dress Marianne wears in the film. On top of that, I added a plaid capelet with brown and white detailing and white scarf.

Recreating Marianne’s look simply from my own closet was easier said than done. If you’d like to be a generic woman from Hammer horror, era-appropriate dresses are usually easy to find in vintage stores and could be paired with the makeup below. Case in point, me on Halloween 3 years ago:

The Makeup

Marianne’s makeup is definitely a look that could pass for modern, so I’ll only do a single face for both levels of cosplay. It’s a high-contrast look but with warm, romantic colors. A great look for autumn to be honest.

Start with an even base with a natural or semi-matte finish. Cover your lids with a neutral shade either in your skin tone or one shade lighter.

Take a neutral or warm purple shade into the crease and outer edge of your lid and blend up. Follow that up with a lighter shade on the lid and just below the brow to create contrast; I chose a pale yellow.

The liner is pretty intense so if you need extra guidance on wings, I talked covered my method in the 1950s. (1.) Start with a thin line of eyeliner right at the lashline. (2.) With your eyes open, looking straight into the mirror, draw out an upward swinging triangle on the outside of your eye and fill it in. (3.) Take a thin angled brush with black or dark brown shadow, smooth the liner and connect the wing with your lower lashline with what is left on the brush. (4.) Finish the eyes up with a few coats of black mascara and, if you like, go into the upper waterline with black liner.

Contouring wasn’t big in 1960, but sculpting with blush certainly was. Take a warm blush and go over the tops of your cheekbones and below them all the way to your ear.

Marianne’s eyebrows are strong but relatively straight. I took a warm brown pencil to draw out the whole shape then softened it with light brown powder and a clean spoolie.

Go back into your eyeliner and, with a small pointed brush place a beauty mark on top of your left cheekbone but below your eye.

Marianne’s lips are full and overlined a little to soften the lipline. Go in with a coral pink liner and round out the shape of your upper lip, particularly making sure the cupid’s bow is obscured. On the bottom lip, draw inward a little at the edges to focus the fullness on the middle of your lip. Then fill in your lips with a glossy coral pink lipstick or lipgloss if you feel that it’s too much with the eyes and cheeks.

Disney’s Magical Express: Everything You Need To Know

This is one of our favorite perks to staying at a Walt Disney World resort. The free ride to and from the airport is nice, but I really enjoy not having to deal with the luggage! In this guide, we’ll look at everything you need to know about using the Disney Magical Express.

What is Disney Magical Express?

Magical Express (aka Magic Express or “the sad bus” as my son calls it when we take it back to the airport) is the airport shuttle service operated by Walt Disney World in partnership with Mears Transportation. It provides motorcoach transportation from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to all Disney World resort hotels and back again. It is important to note, it runs ONLY between MCO and Walt Disney World. Although Sanford is considered an Orlando area airport, the Magical Express does not serve that airport. The buses are very nice coach buses with fabric seats and TV entertainment. The TVs show new Mickey Shorts cartoons, some Disney Trivia, and information about the resorts. They run continuously from the airport to all resorts owned and operated by Disney.

Is Disney Magical Express Free?

Yes! Magical Express is complimentary for guests staying at any Walt Disney World resort hotel.

How Does Disney Magical Express Luggage Transfer Work?

Not only does Magic Express get you to your resort, but it will also get your luggage there. Of course, they do it in typical Disney style too. You don’t have to worry about stopping by Bell Services at some point, your luggage will be delivered directly to your room! Even if you’re not there. I probably enjoy this aspect more than I should openly admit. There is just something about arriving, hitting the park, and returning to my room to find my luggage waiting for me there. What Time Does Disney Magical Express Run? The option is there if you’d prefer to swing by the carousel on your way to the bus and take your luggage with you. In fact, this is necessary if you’re arriving anytime between 10 pm and 5 am. Although the busses are available anytime, the luggage service is restricted between those hours (5 am-10 pm). How Will They Know MY Bags? Once everything is booked and registered (more on that later), Disney will mail luggage tags to your prior to your departure. These will be yellow tags that go on your checked luggage. This allows the Disney cast members to identify and collect your bags at the airport to have them sent directly to your hotel. This means you do NOT have to go to the baggage carousels and collect your bags! Your bags will be delivered directly to your room at your resort later that day. Delivery usually takes about 3 hours. I’ve heard stories of it taking up to 6 hours, but I have personally never experienced that. At least not that I’m aware of. As I said, we like to arrive and then head out, if not to a park - at least Disney Springs. I cannot stress this enough; Pack anything you’ll need immediately in your carry-on bag! Medications, diapers, MagicBands, sunscreen, swimsuits, possibly a change of clothes (we travel from PA in the winter; what we wear to the airport is not what we usually want to be wearing in the parks), etc. I know I just said immediately, you may want to consider the first 24 hours though. While rare, luggage does get misplaced and could take some time to get to you. Better to have those meds with you than to be left scrambling to figure out a replacement.

How To Make A Magical Express Reservation

This part is really easy. So long as you’re using our services, we take care of it for you. However, if you’re not, there are a few different ways to add a Disney Magical Express reservation: Have your travel advisor add it for you. We’ll ask for your flight information and then supply that to Disney on your behalf.If you made your reservation online directly with Disney and already have your flight information, you can enter it during the booking process. Just select “Add Ground” and fill out their form.You may always call the Disney Reservations line too. The Guest Services agent will be happy to assist you. This option might take some time.

What Terminal Is Disney Magical Express?

Disney's Magical Express is located on Level 1 of the B Side at the Orlando International Airport. It is very well signed and you can generally follow the crowd of people also wearing Disney apparel. Or, if you want slightly more specific instructions: After you depart your plane, follow signs to Ground Transportation. You will take a short train ride to the main terminal from your gate.Once in the main terminal, find the B Side.Take the elevator, stairs, or escalators down to Level 1.Follow the signs to Magical Express at the far end of Level 1. Remember our packing tips? The first thing they’re going to ask will be to scan your Magic Band (each person in your party needs their band). In case you’re picking your MagicBands up at the resort, or you forgot and packed them or left them at home, they can also pull your information by your Disney confirmation number. If you left them at home, you still don’t need to worry. Guest Services at your resort will be able to assist with replacements. Once you’re all checked-in, they will direct you to the correct bus for your resort. **Pro-tip: Although rare, if you want to be dropped at a resort other than the one you’re staying at, now is the time to mention it. If you try to alter it while registering for Magical Express that will be the resort your luggage is sent to. That will certainly delay it’s arrival to you.

How Long The Disney Magical Express Take?

The Disney Magical Express drive itself takes only about 30 minutes to get to Disney World, depending on traffic. However, I usually estimate 90 minutes from the time my plane lands to the resort. This allows time for getting to the Magical Express area at the airport, time waiting for your bus to depart (which can be up to 20 minutes), and the drive time itself. Your driver will ask several times about which resorts everyone is going to. Each bus will make up to four stops at different Disney World resorts. If your resort happens to be the first stop, then you can expect a slightly shorter trip. Just be sure to pay attention to where you’re stopping… While not impossible, it can be a pain to travel from one resort to another.

Does Disney Magical Express Go To Sanford?

As mentioned before, Magical Express only services Orlando International Airport (MCO). Your best option to get from Sanford Airport (SFB) is to use a ride-share (like Lyft), rent a car, or another ride service.

Do I Have To Use Magical Express?

While the Magical Express is the only free way to get from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Disney World, you still have options. A one-way trip from MCO to anywhere on Disney World in an Uber or Lyft will generally cost $35 and up depending on the type of rideshare you get. A taxi will start at about $50. There are various other services you can use to get from MCO to Disney World, from town cars to limos. And of course, you can rent a car at Orlando International Airport and drive yourself. Remember, once you get to your resort there are other ways of getting around Disney World, you can read about that in our Getting Around Disney World Guide.

How Does Magical Express Work For The Return Trip?

If you have Magical Express scheduled for your return to MCO Orlando Airport, you’ll receive the paperwork on your door the day before departure. This is always a bittersweet moment for us. While we always like returning home to friends, family, and pets. It is still sad leaving. :( Sad as it may be, this paperwork is important and difficult to replace. It will list not only your resort departure time, approximately 3 hours before your plane departs, it will also act as your return ticket. The driver will collect that letter from you when you board the bus. Please be on time and have the letter. Tardiness and misplaced letters can delay other guests returning home potentially making for stressful situations. I suggest being at the Magical Express bus stop (usually very close to the same place where you were dropped off) about 10 minutes before your pick-up time.

How Does Resort Airline Check-In At Disney Work?

As much as I love my bags being delivered to my room; this may actually be my favorite part of the service! Walt Disney World resorts offer a wonderful service called “Resort Airline Check-In”. This allows you to check-in for your flight, receive your boarding passes, and check your bags right at your hotel! This service is available to all guests at the resort, it is not limited to those using Magical Express for their return trip. It is, however, limited to participating airlines: Alaska AirlinesAmerican AirlinesDelta Air Lines (U.S. Domestic Flights Only)JetBlue AirwaysSouthwest AirlinesUnited Airlines The Resort Airline Check-In desks are found in the same area as Bell Services and the Magical Express bus stop. Here are some of the important rules for Resort Airline Check-In: The Resort Airline Check-In is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM (noon).Guests must check-in no later than 3 hours prior to their scheduled flight departure, flight delays do not extend this time, to use this service. You may check your bag as early as you’d like.All guests must be present for check-in and have their ID, starting October 1, 2020, they must also be REAL ID compliant.If you are using Magical Express and would rather keep your bags with you, that’s not a problem either. You may take your bags with you and they will be stored under the bus. Bell Services will keep them secure for you if you don’t want to carry them throughout the day.

What Time Will Magical Express Pick You Up?

Your Magical Express pick up time will be about three hours before your scheduled flight departure. You’re probably wondering, why so early? Well, your bus may make up to three additional stops at other resorts before going to the airport. Also, MCO is a busy airport with more than 46 million annual passengers. It is the busiest airport in Florida and the 11th busiest airport in the U.S. Yes, even with all of that traffic J.D. Power ranked it “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Mega Airports” in 2017 and 2018. Disney’s Magical Express runs 24 hours a day. Although the buses are always running, remember the luggage service is only for arrivals between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Those are actual arrival times, not scheduled. So if you land late it means you’ll be gathering your bags from the carousel yourself. Do keep track of where you are. Your carousel may not be in the same terminal that the Magical Express departs from. So you may wind up taking your luggage back through the airport to the other terminal.

Is There Magical Express At Disneyland?

Sorry, no. Disneyland doesn’t offer complimentary airport bus transfers like Walt Disney World. You may still arrange transfers through Disney, there will just be a charge to it.

Copeland was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in the San Pedro community of Los Angeles, California. She is the youngest of Sylvia DelaCerna's four children from her second marriage to Douglas Copland. Between the ages of three and seven Copeland lived in Bellflower, California, with her mother and her mother's third husband Harold Brown, a Santa Fe Railroad sales executive.[12] The family moved to San Pedro where Sylvia eventually married her fourth husband, radiologist Robert DelaCerna, and where Misty attended Point Fermin Elementary School. When she was seven, Copeland saw Nadia and gymnast Nadia Comăneci was her role model. At age eleven, she found her first creative outlet at a Boys & Girls Club wood shop class.[15] Copeland never studied ballet or gymnastics formally until her teenage years. However, she did enjoy choreographing flips and dance moves to Mariah Carey songs in her youth. Following in the footsteps of her older sister Erica who had starred on the Dana Middle School drill team.

Copeland's natural presence and skill came to the attention of her classically trained Dana drill team coach, Elizabeth Cantine, in San Pedro. Cynthia Bradley, who was a friend of Cantine’s, first introduced her to ballet in classes at her local Boys & Girls Club. DelaCerna allowed Copeland to go to the club after school until the workday ended and Bradley, a former working dancer with companies in San Diego, Virginia and Kentucky, taught a free ballet class there once a week. Bradley invited Copeland to attend class at the small local ballet school, San Pedro Dance Center. Copeland began her ballet studies at the age of 13 at the San Pedro Dance Center when Cynthia Bradley began picking her up from school. During her first year of middle school the family left Robert. After living with various boyfriends of her mother, the family, moved to the Sunset Inn in Gardena, California. Soon, DelaCerna told Copeland that she would have to give up ballet. However, Bradley wanted Copeland to continue and offered to host her, to which DelaCerna agreed so Misty could pursue her dream. Eventually, they signed a management contract as well as a life-story contract. She spent the weekdays with the Bradleys near the coast and the weekends at home with her mother, a two-hour bus ride away. By the age of fourteen, Copeland was the winner of a national ballet contest and won her first solo role.

Copeland is considered a prodigy. By age 15, Copeland's mother and ballet teachers, who were serving as her custodial guardians, fought a custody battle over her. Meanwhile, Copeland, who was already an award-winning dancer, was fielding professional offers. The 1998 legal proceedings involved filings for emancipation by Copeland and restraining orders by her mother. Both sides dropped legal proceedings, and Copeland moved home to begin studying under a new teacher who was a former ABT member. In 1997, Copeland won the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award as the best dancer in Southern California. After two summer workshops with the ABT, she became a member of the Studio Company in 2000, a member of the corps de ballet in 2001, and a soloist in 2007. Stylistically, she is considered a classical ballet dancer.

As a soloist since 2007, she has been described as having matured into a more contemporary and sophisticated dancer. While aspiring to be a principal dancer, Copeland has numerous goals as a dancer, in terms of leading roles. She aspires to perform lead roles in Giselle, Nikiya and Gamzatti in La Bayadère, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet as well as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. In 2011, she was featured in the Season 1, episode of the Hulu web series A Day in the Life. And she unveiled a line of dancewear that she designed. In 2012, The Council of Urban Professionals as the Council’s Breakthrough Leadership Award winner at its 5th Anniversary Leadership Gala recognized her. By late 2012, she was seeking publication of two books: a memoir and an illustrated youth book. Around this time, Copeland began achieving solo roles in full-length ballets rather than contemporary works.

Copeland starred in The Firebird, with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California. The Los Angeles Times Laura Bleiberg as one of the years hailed the performance best dance performances. The Firebird was again performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in June 2012. Within one week of her first and only performance in the role at the Metropolitan Opera, Copeland withdrew from the entire ABT season at the Met due to six stress fractures in her tibia. She was sidelined for seven months after her October 10 surgery. In 2013, she began working on two books: a memoir under the Simon & Schuster Touchstone Books label and a picture book for the G. P. Putnam's Sons for Young Readers label. In September 2013, Copeland became a spokesperson for Project Plié, a national initiative with the goal of broadening the pipeline of leadership within ballet. 5 Day Disney World Plan Ideal For Optimizing Your Time

Do you have plans to visit Disney World any time soon? There are different approaches to planning the perfect Walt Disney World vacation depending on how much time you have. This 5 day Disney World plan is designed to help you get the most out of your time in Disney by structuring the broad strokes of your schedule so you can fill in the rest.

Day 1: Check In On day one you will be arriving at the airport most likely. There you will check in at Disney's Magical Express and take your motor coach to your resort. Although you can check in on your phone, try to do it in person so someone will be able to accommodate special requests. It helps if you are celebrating something and are generally pleasant.

Your first night in Disney World is a great time to book one of your nicer reservations. Get comfortable at your room, take a walk to get your bearings and have an enjoyable meal in your hotel, or at Disney Springs.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom-Epcot For such a short trip, you will definitely want to have park hopper tickets. Your first day will be split between Magic Kingdom and Epcot. These are the two parks that most need a full day to really enjoy. Don't worry. This plan works out. Start the day early at Magic Kingdom. You can even get in before the park opens on certain days with a special ticket for Early Morning Magic. This option includes breakfast.

About Midday, when the park is at its peak attendance. leave Magic Kingdom and head for the Monorail. Make sure to first use up all of your Fastpass selections before you go. Take the monorail to the Ticket and Transportation Center and transfer to the Epcot Line.

Day 3: Epcot-Hollywood Studios The next day you should split between Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Which park comes first mostly depends on what nighttime show you want to see. I picked Epcot first because the breakfast is better here and I want to see Wonderful World of Animation at Hollywood Studios. These parks are good hopping partners because they are walking distance from each other. There is also a boat path if you don't mind taking the extra time. Later this year, the Skyliner will make it even easier to park hop.

Day 4: Animal Kingdom-Magic Kingdom On your last full day in Walt Disney World you should go to Animal Kingdom first. Animal Kingdom is the most flexible park due to the nature of its various attractions and exhibits. You may do what you came for and feel satisfied after 4 or 5 hours; or you may want to stay all day. If you do leave, I recommend taking an Uber, or Minnie Van to Magic Kingdom so you can see the Happily Ever After fireworks at night. However, if you wanted to scoop up some more time in Epcot, I couldn't fault you for that.

On this evening you will want to settle the bill and confirm arrangements for the transportation back to the airport. Day 5: Check Out On the day you check out it's a really good idea to have a fantastic breakfast to help send you off on a high note. The Bon Voyage breakfast at Boardwalk Inn is a really good choice if you like character meals. The Wave at the Contemporary is a very good restaurant. If you leave on a weekend, you could enjoy a brunch at House of Blues, or Maria and Enzo's at Disney Springs, or you can have a fancier brunch buffet at the California Grill.

With only 3 days in London, you can actually experience a lot of the culture capital. My British friend David Angel from Delve into Europe shares the perfect 3-day London itinerary.

London is one of a very small, select group that can lay claim to being a truly great world city. The capital of England and the UK has more packed into it than many whole countries do. So a 3 days London itinerary presents some challenges.

Our suggested itinerary is geared to a first-time visitor, showing you most of the main London sights, while also introducing you to some of the many different sides to the city and some of its best experiences.

London started out 2,000 years ago as a Roman provincial settlement and capital. After a period of decline it grew to become one of the biggest cities in medieval Europe, and eventually the capital of the largest empire on the planet.

It is a city with an incredible wealth of history and heritage, and has long been a true melting pot of cultures and languages – the main reason I’ve always loved it. London is home to people from every corner of the world, and is a world in itself.

3 Days in London: Itinerary and Guide

When to Travel London

London can be visited at any time of year – it can be wonderful in all seasons. The parks are magnificent in spring, with the flower beds full and trees in blossom. In summer, the weather is balmy, the evenings long, and you can sit at some of the rooftop bars and enjoy amazing views over the city long into the evening.

Autumn is lovely too, and a great time to catch a show at one of the many theatres in the West End. And winter can be magical, as the city is lit up for those long evenings, and there are so many great places to eat out or enjoy some amazing entertainment.

How to Get to London

There are three ways to get to London – air, train and bus.

By Air

The national airline in the UK is British Airways and they are one of the best airlines in the world in terms of service and punctuality. You can get really good deals when flying from New York to London for as cheap as $400 return. Flights from anywhere in Europe to London are very affordable, usually no more than $100 return if you book in advance.

Airport Transfers

If you’re flying to London from outside of Europe, you’ll arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick International Airports. Heathrow is closer to London than Gatwick, though both have excellent links with central London. The Heathrow Express train takes just 15 minutes to whisk you to London Paddington station. Alternatively, the Piccadilly Line – part of the Tube, or Underground train network – takes an hour from Heathrow to the centre of London.

To get from Gatwick to the city, book the Gatwick Express train which takes 15 minutes to get to London Victoria station. A cheaper option is the bus transfer from Gatwick to your hotel, which can take up to 1.5 hours. For more comfort and speed, book a shared from the airport to your hotel.

If you’re traveling from continental Europe, there’s a high chance you’ll be arriving at Stansted or Luton airports, which are busy hubs for the budget carriers including easyjet and Ryanair. Stansted is 45 minutes from Liverpool Street on the Stansted Express train. Cheaper options include bus transfers which take up to 1.5 hours or mini-van shared transfers.

By Train

You also arrive at St Pancras International if you’re travelling from continental Europe by train – a very convenient option from the likes of Paris and Amsterdam. Rail travellers from within the UK will find frequent services to London from all over the country. Fares within the UK, especially walk-up ones, can be very high, so it pays to book as far in advance as possible to get the best deals.

By Bus

Victoria Coach Station, a few minutes’ walk from Victoria railway station, is the busy arrival point for coaches from across Europe and all over the UK. Coach travel within the UK is generally much cheaper than rail travel, so if you plan to travel around the UK after your time in London, it’s well worth looking at National Express and Megabus offers.

Getting Around London

Whatever you do in London, do not attempt to drive.

Instead, make use of the excellent public transport system in London, which includes the Tube (underground trains), Overground rail, buses and River Buses along the Thames.

By Tube

The first thing you’ll need for travelling in London is a Visitor Oyster card, which you can order online. It only costs £5, and you can order whatever credit you think you’ll need loaded onto it. It’s a simple smart card which you top up when your credit is running low – you can do this at machines or kiosks at all stations. Fares are capped each day, so you can get around Zones 1 and 2 for as little as £6.60 a day, a real bargain.

The Tube costs the most, covers most places you would visit within three days, and the buses offer additional coverage all over the city. We always tended to use the Tube for longer journeys into the city, then buses for short hops around central London. Travelling by Tube is great, but you see much more of London on board a bus.

Where to Stay in London

There is an enormous range of places to stay in London, covering all budgets and tastes, from backpacker to high-end luxury.

As you’re spending three days in London, it makes sense to stay as close to central London as possible, to cut down as much as possible on your travelling time.

Luxury: Covent Garden Hotel

One of our favourite London hotels is the Covent Garden Hotel, in a quiet street close to the Seven Dials junction. It’s one of the best luxury hotels in London, and an iconic landmark of the city. With an excellent location, the hotel stands in the lively Covent Garden, at only a few minutes’ walk from many of the main sights in Leicester Square and theatre district. Mid-Range: Ambassadors Bloomsbury

Ambassadors Bloomsbury is another good central London option, close to Euston and St Pancras stations so ideal if you’re travelling by Eurostar. It’s very contemporary in style, in a grand red-brick Victorian building close to the heart of the University of London. It’s around a 15-minute walk from the British Museum, and the 91 bus runs direct to Trafalgar Square. Check the latest rates here.

Budget: Meininger Hotel London Hyde Park

Where to Eat in London

Many of the best places to eat in London are around the Theatreland or West End, either side of Shaftesbury Avenue.

Chinatown has a huge range of places, with many Chinese and other Asian (Japanese, Korean, Thai) restaurants covering all budgets. One of my favourites is the Baozi Inn at Newport Court, just off Charing Cross Road, which serves some great Sichuanese street food and dim sum – fantastic if you like your food spicy. Soho, across Shaftesbury Avenue from Chinatown, has a great choice of places to eat, from long-standing institutions like Maison Bertaux (a French patisserie and café on Greek Street) to new arrivals like Babaji Istanbul Pride, which serves sumptuous pide (Turkish pizza).

Another place close to Shaftesbury Avenue that I absolutely love is De Hems, the only Dutch pub in London. It has a great selection of beers in the bar, and borrelhapjes – snacks – including cheese parcels and frikadelle sausages, and a great menu of traditional pub mains. What to Pack for London

You never quite know what weather you’re going to get in the UK, but as London is in the east of the country, it actually gets a lot less rain than the west, which gets the brunt of the Atlantic rain fronts. That said, a small travel umbrella is very useful to have in London.

The one essential item you’ll need for London is a good pair of comfortable, low-level walking shoes – ideally already broken in for a day or two beforehand. There’s a good chance you’ll be doing a lot of walking during your three days in London, so you don’t want sore feet and blisters slowing you down.

It’s also wise to bring layers of clothes for your trip to London. In summer you’ll probably need a shirt or extra top layer to add if it gets cooler in the evening. Don’t forget a waterproof rain jacket for the rains that London is notorious for. In autumn, winter and even spring you’ll need more than that, including a fleece layer. Pack thermals and fleece-lined leggings for winter, especially if you’re planning on being outdoors a lot – it can get pretty cold.

And finally, stock up on memory cards for your camera. Even now, having lived there and visited hundreds of times, I still find so much to photograph there. So be prepared.

3 Days in London Itinerary

Day 1: Central London

This first day of your three day London itinerary takes you around many of the famous iconic sights of Central London, taking in the sights or Royal London, Westminster and the West End. One of the best entertainment districts in the world.

Start at Westminster

0900 Begin your journey in Parliament Square, home to the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. The iconic clock tower, Big Ben, is currently clad in scaffolding (and will be until 2021) but it’s still an amazing place, with Westminster Abbey just across the square. You can also book a 3-hour Houses of Parliament tour which includes all skip-the-line entrances and guide.

0930 Get in first through the doors at Westminster Abbey, one of the most fascinating, history-packed churches in the world. It has been the venue for many royal weddings and funerals, including the 2011 marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The adult entry fee is £20, for which you get access to most of the church and a multimedia guide. Book your entrance ticket here.

There is an incredible wealth of things to see in Westminster Abbey, one of the most magnificent Gothic buildings in Europe. Many kings and queens of England are buried there, as well as many great literary figures, with Poets’ Corner centred around the tomb of Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the Canterbury Tales, the greatest work in medieval English literature.

Watch the Changing of the Guard

1040 It’s time for a walk. Head across Parliament Square, turning left onto Birdcage Walk, with Big Ben behind you. Take the next right onto Horse Guards Road, from where it’s a few minutes’ walk up to Horseguards Parade ground on the right.

This is one of two places in London where you can see the Changing of the Guard, one of the most famous royal ceremonies, free of charge. The other one takes place at the same time (1100) outside Buckingham Palace, but it’s much easier to get a spot at Horseguards than there.

The ceremony has scarcely changed since it was introduced in the 17th century, and it’s one of the best photo opportunities in London. Many visitors also photograph the mounted sentries the other side of the Household Cavalry Museum, on Whitehall.

Visit the Buckingham Palace

1130 It’s a 15-minute walk from Horseguards to the Queen’s London residence, Buckingham Palace. The State Rooms of the Palace are open for 10 weeks each summer (normally mid-July to late September). If you’re there at other times of year, it’s a very impressive sight, and the walk there – either through lovely St James’s Park or the Royal processional route, The Mall, is one of the most enjoyable in London.

I recommend booking a Changing of the Guard and Buckingham Palace tour to learn more about what you’re seeing through a guide. You’ll also get exclusive access to the state rooms in the palace. Alternatively, you can combine all the above with a Thames river cruise on this London day tour.

Wander Around Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square

1300 Continue the walk through Green Park to Piccadilly, one of the best-known streets in London. You arrive on Piccadilly at the Ritz Hotel. Cross the road and catch the number 6 bus – destination Aldwych – as far as Trafalgar Square, passing Piccadilly Circus en route.

Time for a spot of lunch in one of the best cafes in central London, the Cafe in the Crypt which sits in the corner of Trafalgar Square. The church to which the café is attached is also one of the best venues in the city for classical music concerts.

1400 Trafalgar Square is one of the great public spaces of London and the official centre of the city. Its most prominent landmark is Nelson’s Column, the figure of Lord Horatio looking down Whitehall towards Big Ben. It’s surrounded by the four bronze lions by Edwin Landseer, and at the back of the Square is your next destination.

1430 The National Gallery is one of the finest art museums in the world. The Gallery usually has over 2,000 paintings exhibited at any one time, and getting around everything could take days – I used to visit one section at a time rather than try to take it all in. However, stay around for the rest of the afternoon, no matter how far you get, it’ll be one of the best afternoons you’ll spend in your life. Book a Book a guided tour of the National Gallery.

Catch a West End Show

1730 Dinner in Chinatown. This area is only a few minutes’ walk up Charing Cross Road, and is packed with great restaurants from all over Asia. Many places in Chinatown and neighbouring Covent Garden and Soho have pre-show dinner offers at special rates.

1930 Seeing a West End show is one of the best things to do in London. You can book tickets in advance, but when we lived there we tended to use the ticket booth on Leicester Square which usually was a good way to find a bargain.

There are over 50 theatres in the West End of London, most of which are centred around Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho and Covent Garden. You can see everything from long-running musicals to theatre productions – check the latest listings here.

Day 2: City of London

Today you’ll explore the City of London, home to more of the great sights of London and much of the UK’s finance industry.

Admire St Paul’s Cathedral

0900 St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most familiar and enduring sights of London, and by far and away the finest Baroque church in the UK. It was designed and built by Sir Christopher Wren after the 1666 Great Fire of London destroyed much of the medieval city, including its great cathedral.

Inside, it’s a golden, glittering masterpiece, one of the most impressive church interiors I’ve ever seen. You can also climb up to the dome for some outstanding views of London. Book here for discounted, fast-track entrance.

See the Tower Bridge

1100 It’s worth taking the next stage of your journey on foot, as you pass through the City of London to look up at the ever-changing skyline. Each of the new skyscrapers that has sprung up seems to have a nickname, with recent ones including the Gherkin, The Cheese Grater and the Walkie-Talkie.

Continue along Cannon Street as far as Monument Tube station – from here, cross London Bridge, with great views along the river and a better perspective of the City skyline. To your left is Tower Bridge, one of the most recognisable in the world. And soaring over 300 metres above is the Shard, currently the tallest skyscraper in Europe.

Pig Out at Borough Market

1230 Borough Market is one of the biggest draws in London, one of London’s biggest fresh food markets with a whole host of pop-up street food stalls, restaurants and bars clustered nearby. It’s fully open Wednesdays to Saturdays, with partial opening Mondays and Tuesdays. I recommend joining a food tour to learn more about London’s culinary culture and try the best stalls in the market.

There are lots of great spots for lunch along here, and it’s also worth looking around Southwark Cathedral next door. The Refectory behind the Cathedral is another nice spot for lunch or afternoon tea.

Head to the Top of the Shard or Tower of London

1400 It’s decision time. If the weather’s clear it may be worth considering a trip up the Shard for an amazing elevated view over London. If the weather’s not so good, the view is nowhere near as good, and your money is better spent visiting either the Tower of London or its near neighbour, Tower Bridge and the Tower Bridge Experience. Both are fascinating.

The Tower of London would probably win my vote, but it would be a close-run thing. If you’re looking for photo opportunities, the Tower is home to the Beefeaters, or Yeoman Warders, whose distinctive uniforms are another great London icon.

Enjoy a Pint and Pub Food

1700 If you’re there on a week day, stop by at one of the many City of London pubs for a drink. The Hung, Drawn and Quartered is one of many, and the closest to the Tower of London itself.

1800 Head to Shoreditch, on the fringe of London’s East End, for your evening out. I can remember this area being quite sorry and neglected 15 years or so ago, but a whole range of start-ups have changed it completely and livened it up – there are now plenty of restaurants and clubs, and it’s one of London’s best areas for nightlife.

Day 3: Kensington and Around

Visit Kensington’s Museums

1000 Start your day in South Kensington by visiting one (or even more) of the suburb’s amazing museums. The Science Museum is brilliant for hands-on discovery and a favourite with families, as is the Natural History Museum next door. If you’re traveling with kids, it might be a good idea to book this Natural History Museum family tour for them to learn some interesting facts!

The iconic diplodocus dinosaur cast that dominated the entrance hall for so long has gone on a tour of the UK for a few years, but this is still one of the best museums of its kind in the world, covering the natural world from the dawn of prehistory to the present day. It also hosts the Wildlife Photographer of the Year event each year.

1200 Just across the road from the Natural History and Science Museums is the third world-class Kensington Museum, the V&A, or Victoria & Albert. It’s one of the world’s leading decorative arts and design museums, covering paintings, ceramics, furniture, clothing and much more.

Entry to the V&A is free, with paid ticket access to some temporary exhibitions – the David Bowie one a few years ago was brilliant, and a Frida Kahlo exhibition has just opened, running for the next three months. Grab a snack at one of the cafes in the Museum – you won’t want to eat too much at this stage.

Immerse in the Greenery of Kensington Gardens

1330 Turn right out of the V&A and walk up Exhibition Road for ten minutes until you reach Hyde Park. On your left, you’ll see the Royal Albert Hall, one of the finest concert venues in the UK and home of the iconic Last Night of the Proms concert.

Cross into the Park, passing the Albert Memorial on your left, continuing towards the Serpentine lake. The area to the left is known as Kensington Gardens, and is home to the Serpentine Gallery and Kensington Palace. Just before the lake, on the right, is the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain.

Visit London’s Exclusive Harrods

1430 Now retrace your steps or head through the back streets towards Knightsbridge, where you’ll soon see one of the most recognisable store exteriors in the world. Harrod’s is one of London’s most exclusive department stores, and it’s well worth a peek inside to see the lavish interior and displays.

1600 Jump on board the number 14 bus for the short ride (in distance terms) to Hyde Park Corner, alighting two stops later opposite Green Park Tube station and your next destination.

Enjoy a Traditional Afternoon Tea

1630 Afternoon tea at the Ritz is one of the ultimate London indulgences. It’s one of the great British traditions, and you sit in the grandeur of the Palm Court, enjoying a selection of finger sandwiches, scones and delicious cakes and pastries.

You are required to dress in a manner befitting the elegant architecture of your surroundings, so no jeans and sportswear for either gender, and gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie. Prices start at £57 per adult. It is one of the most enjoyable splurges you will ever have, something you’ll always remember.

See a Classical Concert

1830 Slowly make your way back to Kensington and the Royal Albert Hall. It’s an incredible venue with some of the best acoustics I’ve heard anywhere in the world. It’s renowned for its classical concerts, but also hosts many mainstream pop acts.

Check the venue website to find who or what’s on – a concert there is one of the best London experiences. Last time we went there for a classical concert paying a walk-up fee of £10 per ticket. Soon after the start a member of staff kindly suggested we move to more expensive seats with a better view which weren’t occupied. We greatly appreciated that.
