Radley Balko at The Watch:
Here’s a sentence I never imagined I’d need to write: It would be a bad idea for the U.S. to go to war with Mexico. And yet here we are. The thing about a candidate as historically dangerous, impulsive, and incompetent as Trump is that he routinely proposes stuff so off the wall that it would tank virtually any other campaign. But because of this, some of his nuttier ideas are overshadowed by everything else he does. In a previous post, I looked at one of these under-the-radar ideas — Trump’s catastrophic promise to deny federal funding to any school that requires kids to be vaccinated. Today, we’ll look at another — the Trump/Republican vow to bomb or invade Mexico. Trump has repeatedly threatened that, if elected again, he will bomb drug cartels and fentanyl manufacturing facilities in Mexico. He has also proposed sending assassination teams or special forces units into the country. He vowed to take these actions with or without the consent of the Mexican government. The Mexican government has been pretty clear about where it stands on this: They would not consent. So let’s be clear about what Trump is proposing: He’s proposing an invasion of Mexico. Which means he’s a proposing a war with Mexico.
Trump’s history with this threat suggests we should take it more seriously than the typical bluster he spouts during one of his campaign rally monoglogues. Rolling Stone reported last year that even then he had already asked his advisors to assemble a “battle plan” to enact shortly after he’s elected. He also reiterated his promise in an interview he and running mate JD Vance did with Fox News last month (Vance is also all for it). The origin of the war with Mexico idea dates back to the end of Trump’s first term, when, in response to rising fentanyl overdoses, he attempted to designate drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, despite the fact that they don’t fit any reasonable definition of a terrorist. He apparently thought this would allow him to bomb the cartels as if they were ISIS cells. It turns out that it isn’t that simple. You can’t simply call people “terrorists” and immediately start bombing the countries where said “terrorists” are operating without first consulting with the leaders of those countries. Mexico’s president promptly and resoundingly dismissed the idea. This apparently irked Trump enough to take the position he advocates today: Just bomb them, anyway.
[...] Destructive, counterproductive policy that treats foreign lives as disposable has long been the hallmark of U.S. overseas drug interdiction. We’ve funded the extra-judicial execution of drug offenders in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. We partnered with South American governments to shoot down suspect drug running planes without regard to the possible loss of innocent life — that is, until the policy claimed the lives of a U.S. missionary and her daughter. In Panama, the CIA (specifically, George H.W. Bush) propped up and facilitated the drug-running operation of brutal dictator Manuel Noriega. When Noriega was no longer useful for fighting communism, the U.S. then indicted him for said drug running, then (specifically, George H.W. Bush) invaded and bombed his country. We killed hundreds of Panamanian citizens in the process.
As for Mexico itself, in the mid-2000s the U.S. incentivized the country’s government to enlist its own military in the drug war. That policy toppled some cartels, but also spawned destabilizing turf wars and violence as rival factions vied to replace them. The winners then and the military have since been fighting for nearly two decades. The death toll is now approaching half a million people. When asked about the carnage, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton basically said in 2011 that tens of thousands of dead Mexicans was a price the U.S. was willing to pay to keep harmful drugs away from Americans. (It did not keep illicit drugs away from Americans.) The arguably most destructive U.S. overseas anti-drug program was Plan Colombia, Bill Clinton’s drug eradication program that poisoned farmland, fostered rampant corruption, and pushed that country into a civil war that has killed tens of thousands of people. This too did not keep illicit drugs away from Americans.
[...]
It will backfire
Even drug cartels have a code. They go out of their way to avoid harming U.S. law enforcement, and they don’t target U.S. citizens. When underlings have violated this code, or when U.S. citizens have suffered collateral harm, the cartels have bent over backwards to make amends. The last thing they want is to bring the full force and weight of the U.S. government upon themselves. This of course doesn’t excuse the times drug violence has harmed American citizens. We should naturally seek justice in those cases. But while what Trump is proposing won’t end the illicit drug trade, it will create an existential threat to the current cartels. It will back them into a corner. Cartels avoid U.S. casualties because they want to remain in operation. If they know the United States is sending its military to kill them, there’s no incentive to adhere to the code. They’re likely to lash out — against U.S. law enforcement, U.S. citizens, possibly U.S. politicians.
[...]
Mexico isn’t our enemy
Depending on how you measure it, Mexico is either our first, second, or third biggest trade partner. Any military action taken without consent of the Mexican government would bring most of that trade to a screeching halt. That risks about $855 billion in annual commerce. It would threaten millions of jobs, particularly in California, Texas, Louisiana, and the industrial Midwest. When Trump threatened to completely shut down the border during his first term, economists warned it would result in a shortage the goods from Mexico, including computers, cars and car parts, gas, chemicals, and produce (goodbye avocados!). Mexico is also a big consumer for U.S. agriculture. So corn, soybeans, poultry, pork, and dairy farmers would also take a hit. We’d also see major interruptions in supply chains that flow through Mexico. When the Border Patrol shut down just one official crossing in San Diego for just a few hours in 2019, businesses in that city lost $5.3 million. All of this economic damage would come in addition to the calamitous economic effects of Trump’s other disastrous campaign promises, like across-the-board tariffs and mass deportations.
Radley Balko perfectly describes why going to war with Mexico is a reckless and costly idea.

16/06/2024. Bonjour à tous, hoping I find you all well. It’s a cloudy day and we are expecting rain but as I always say it’s good for the garden.
Talking of the garden, Monique came to visit me yesterday and before I knew it she was outside clearing all the large weeds from the raised beds and planters. What a difference it made and she found a lone nigella, which she replanted, then took a piece from the dianthus and planted that with a little pansy in the raised planter. Normally this is where I grow my salad stuffs but flowers will do for this year.
I had a message from Pauline, she is in town and is going to come visit me this morning. Funnily enough I have so much to do this weekend and I will have had two visitors!
This last week has been full of hospital visits, PET scan one day, trip to Paris hospital another day, where they were concerned because my platelets are not rising at all despite having transfusions, injections and tablets. I had a day at home on Wednesday but then it was transfusions in Troyes hospital and Friday back to Paris for a consultation and platelet transfusion.
I was also given the result of the PET scan which was not the result I was hoping for! However, the doctor said that although the CAR-T cell treatment hadn’t done all that was expected of it, it had not been a failure. I require further treatment and am going back into hospital in Paris tomorrow. Fortunately it’s only for three days this week and three days next (at the moment).
My grandchildren are with “The Photographer” this weekend, what a couple of jokers they are. Friday evenings video call saw my granddaughter telling me her name was SIX. When I said “Hello Six” she laughed so much. She was pointing to her brother and saying “his name is two”, but he didn’t want that and said “my name is PIZZA!” Oh that made me laugh so much.
“The Photographer” starts a new job tomorrow and the first week will be taken up with training, meeting colleagues and generally easing into the work. Good luck with that. I will be thinking about you.
“The Trainee Solicitor” has had three days at Uni and getting up at 5:15am is no joke (I can vouch for that!). However, he is half way through the course, has two days there this week, so that isn’t so bad.
“The Reconnect Navigator” has had a painful back for a while and she managed to get an appointment to have it assessed. It is sciatica but she is being sent for an MRI scan as he thinks there is other damage too.
Yesterday “The Trainee Solicitor and “The Reconnect Navigator” went to see “my grandchildren and share a lunch with the two “Fathers” for Father’s day today. Apparently “The Reconnect Navigator” was flavour of the month for the children as they had been arguing, before she arrived, as to who would play with her first. Normally my grandson is shy with her but not this weekend. Of course, “The Trainee Solicitor” is a favourite no matter what and I am sure he was given big hugs by both of them.
“The Jetsetter” should be back from Majorca now and it will be nice to find out how the Spanish treated the English while she was there. There has been a lot in the newspapers about “tourists go home” and it will be interesting to hear from a tourist.
I am back with a couple of songs, the first is the brilliant “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack way back in 1972. The song is from one of my favourite films “Play Misty For Me” with Clint Eastwood.
The second song, is one that I have loved from when I first heard it, it’s the amazing Nina Simone with “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life” this dates back to 1968 (sorry it’s a real oldie).
I have had a message from Anie, who is currently in Aiguës Mortes on her holiday. She is having a good time with her family from Indonesia.
So that’s about it for another week, let’s hope that the news is better this coming week. I am pleased that my book delivery arrived, as I will have some books to take into hospital to read while I am resting.
Bon dimanche.

This week’s astrology forecast: April 17th – 23rd
Message for the week: Time for a cosmic reboot
A rare hybrid total Solar Eclipse occurs this Thursday at the very last degree and final minutes of Aries. This happens in less than 5% of Solar Eclipses and is caused by the Full Moon being its furthest from the Earth, casting a smaller shadow as it passes in front of the Sun. This will create a ring of fire around the mostly darkened Sun (visible in Australia and Indonesia).
The Sun’s light, being temporarily shut down, is a cosmic reboot—like rebooting your computer to clear unwanted programs from running. The New Moon is the time for a new beginning—a fresh start. The eclipse squares Pluto and will reveal what destructive habits and obsessions you need to purge in order to move forward without hindrances.
The other important celestial influence this week is Mercury turning retrograde on Friday for the next three weeks. Retrograde periods are excellent for tying up and completing existing projects and endeavors that need to be completed before taking on new projects.
Monday: This is a good day for a spiritual recharge, with dreamy, spiritual, and creative energy abounding—with the Moon in introspective Pisces conjunct transcendent Neptune. Ask your higher self for guidance to get the best of this aspect. A lively and smooth evening is in store with the Moon entering fiery Aries and sextile transformative Pluto.
Tuesday: Jump into this day to take advantage of the Moon in enthusiastic Aries supported by a sextile to lovely Venus. There is a “heads up” this afternoon while the Moon squares agitating Mars, creating a bitchy mood for you and others. The mood passes and a high-spirited evening, free of agitation, ensues.
Wednesday: A powerful day in the heavens, starting with the Moon in action-oriented Aries conjunct fortunate Jupiter—think big. The New Moon Solar Eclipse is at 9:13 PM PDT at the very end of Aries, and square to subconscious Pluto. Pause and contemplate what you need to shed in order to move forward—free yourself from burdens you’ve been carrying.
Thursday: The Sun enters determined Taurus and immediately squares powerful Pluto—avoid power conflicts, which would only escalate with this volatile energy. The Moon in stabilizing Taurus and sextile to focusing Saturn will help—keep to your own business and all goes smoothly. The Moon is sextile Mars in Cancer tonight, great for a gourmet snack.
Friday: Mercury turns retrograde in Taurus for the next three weeks—tie up loose ends before moving forward. Functional intuition is available today with the Moon forming a triple conjunction with Mercury and Uranus in Taurus—act on sudden flashes of insight. The Moon is sextile dreamy Neptune this evening, great for a gourmet meal and entertainment. .
Saturday: A busy, fun day with the Moon entering variety-loving Gemini and trine regenerative Pluto this morning. The Moon does square challenging Saturn midday, creating delays in your plans, and then is free of inhibiting aspects—making for a lively, smooth, afternoon and evening.
Sunday: The Moon is in inquisitive Gemini conjunct magnetic Venus to start the day—let fascination and your whimsy guide you. Mercury (the mind) is in a supportive sextile to empowering Mars, enhancing communications with clarity and directness.
May the stars be with you!

What countries will you never visit again?
I’m an IT consultant and I’ve been to 40+ countries so far due to office work. And by far South Korea is the worst place for Indians.
I went to Korea back in 2022 with Cincinnati Stingers Cincinnati Bengals Cincinnati Reds FC Cincinnati Hawaiian Shirt and racism starts from the moment you land up in Ichelon airport. I got cold shoulder and no smile from the airport staff and at the same time, all the staff were supremely nice towards my French friend. It's so good as if a dog wiggles its tail and goes back and forth to get your attention. We stayed there for a week and the experience of both of us was exactly the opposite, Koreans were so needy for my friend's attention and so hostile towards me. Nonetheless, both of us were creeped out! Again, nothing better is expected from people who keep looks as a top priority and go to any extent like doing multiple plastic surgeries like chin job, facelift, jaw surgery, nose surgery, etc. The Korean society is altogether a problem here, just saying it to be a problem of few would be an understatement.
During my stay, I met a few people from the Philippines and Indonesia and they said South Koreans are so shallow that they discriminate against anyone who is either poor(or rich from a perceived poor country like India) or average-looking or not light-skinned! Mind you the 'OR' not 'AND'. You might argue that this happens in every country, but I was overwhelmed as it happened to me at least 50 times during my one-week trip with me. And mind you I’m like a very highly educated guy and even burger flippers in South Korea were giving me the cold shoulder. I don’t know what things they teach Korean kids in their school!
So, If you’re Indian(South Asian) or from so-called poor SEA countries(as per them) like Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand beware and think twice before going to South Korea!

WTO agrees dispute panel to review EU import duties on Indonesian biodiesel JAKARTA, Nov 28 (Reuters) - World Trade Organization's (WTO) dispute settlement body has agreed to establish a panel to review countervailing duties imposed by the European Union (EU) on imports of biodiesel from Indonesia, the global trade body said late on Monday. Indonesia has requested WTO dispute consultations with the EU regarding the bloc's imposition of duties on imports of biodiesel from the Southeast Asia nation in August. However after the consultation failed to reach an agreement, last month the world's biggest palm oil producer requested WTO to establish a dispute settlement body, which EU previously did not accept. "Efforts to appeal this case to the WTO are very strategic to maintain market access for Indonesian biodiesel products in the EU market which is currently subject to countervailing duties of 8% to 18%," said Budi Santoso, senior official at Indonesian trade ministry on Tuesday. The countervailing duties were imposed for five years December 10, 2019 up to December 10, 2024, Budi added. Indonesian biofuel producers association said the duties have been burdening Indonesian biodiesel exporters and hoped for the WTO panel could immediately start the proceedings, the group chairperson Paulus Tjakrawan told Reuters. The WTO said late on Monday the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Russian Federation, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Canada, China, Argentina and Türkiye had reserved their third party rights to participate in the panel proceedings.

Strive Community Services | strive.org.au
Community service is volunteer work intended to help people in a specific area. It's been a part of high school and college requirements for quite some time now.
STRIVE Birmingham recently celebrated its pilot cohort at an event filled with pride, gratitude and optimism. Check out a few photos from the celebration!
Health & Wellness
Strive community services takes a holistic approach to mental health and wellness, offering programming that brings together psychiatry, financial literacy, nutrition, personal fitness, and community engagement. We help participants develop a sense of belonging and re-integrate into their communities through activities like our daily Wellness Hour, 10-Choose program, and Square-Foot community garden.
Using intensive case management, our Fresh Start program helps returning citizens gain the skills they need to live their best lives. Participants design their own goals and training based on what they want to learn, and are supported through their journey towards their desired objectives.
Our flagship site in East Harlem assists residents of every borough, but particularly those living with the greatest barriers to finding and maintaining employment. We know that a neighborhood’s history should not determine a resident’s future, and we work to connect them to opportunities that will change their lives. Using a forpurpose model, our services are guided by best-practice professional standards and robust client and staff consultation.
Education & Training
Strive offers a wide range of training, from life skills to vocational workshops. It also teaches job-readiness, self-examination, goal setting and relationships with family and peers, as well as financial literacy.
For example, a program in the New York City area helps clients identify their career path, and assists with applying to post-secondary education programs and finding relevant jobs. STRIVE also offers individualized case management to help each client overcome barriers and achieve their unique vision for success.
To engage micro-entrepreneurs in a digital capacity building program, the team at TechnoServe (a Strive Community partner) used user-centered design to understand their needs and identify priority topics, then created videos featuring local entrepreneurs and their experiences to keep content engaging. Similarly, a platform in Indonesia called Shujaaz Biz uses real-life stories from entrepreneurial young people to connect small businesses with the right digital tools and services to grow. This insights page is regularly updated with what the Strive Community learns about digital capacity building for small business owners.
Employment & Volunteering
Strive helps people overcome barriers to employment and help them realize their potential for life-changing careers. Whether they are starting out in the job market, coming out of prison, or trying to find work after raising children, our programs can provide them with career path training and one-on-one disability support to help them get a foothold in the workforce.
Our New York site serves individuals from every borough, with a focus on East Harlem and Upper Manhattan. These neighborhoods have been historically discriminated against, leading to poverty rates over a third of the population and high unemployment rates. STRIVE New York believes that an area’s history should not determine its residents’ future.
Volunteers are needed at STRIVE Night to assist with setting up games, serving as DJ, checking-in members and helping with the snack bar. Each month there is a theme night which includes a dance floor, board games and more! It is a great way to meet teens and young adults with developmental disabilities.
Community Integration
Strive Living Society offers a range of specialized accommodations that provide housing solutions and opportunities for community integration. Individuals are supported by a community integration specialist to access the community, find jobs and participate in social activities.
All children will have a Positive Behaviour disability support worker Plan developed and in place that will replace problem behaviours with safe and prosocial behaviours. This will be achieved through a process of repeated exposure over time to situations that will create soft and contained stress (e.g. playing a game of soccer where they might miss the kick) but with practitioners on hand to act as an external soothing figure and bring them back to baseline.
Through this innovative initiative, Mastercard is investing in new solutions that will help five million small businesses improve their digital capabilities. The goal: to enable these businesses to thrive and help set into motion a virtuous cycle of inclusive growth. This includes enabling them to get capital and go digital through initiatives like the Internet of Things-enabled vending machines that grow retailer revenue in Kenya, using behavioral insights and open banking data to increase financial management and decision-making among small business owners, and testing virtual reality solutions for upskilling small businesses in developing countries.

Apple got rich in China. Other Asian markets offer the next ‘golden opportunity
Hong KongCNN —
Apple launched an online store in Vietnam this week, in another nod to the rising importance of emerging shops for the iPhone maker.
The opening on Thursday, which followed the high-profile launch of its first real shops in India, means trades in the fast-growing Southeast Asian low-cost will be able to buy any Apple product directly for the first time.
Markets like Vietnam, India and Indonesia are becoming more significant for Apple as its growth in developed markets, including China, slows down, prompting the company to focus on places where it’s usually been less active.
For decades, China was central to Apple’s extraordinary climb to become the most valuable company on Earth, portion as a backbone for both its invention and feeding. While the country remains key to Apple’s operations, the tech giant is now hedging its bets.
Vachira Vachira/NurPhoto/Getty Images
Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has pointed to the company’s prospects in emerging economies, calling them bright spots in the company’s financial results. On an earnings call this month, Cook said he was “particularly pleased” with the performance in these markets during the first three months of the year.
Apple “achieved all-time records in Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE, as well as a number of March quarter records, including in Brazil, Malaysia and India,” he told analysts.
That came as the California-based giant also reported its second straight drop in overall quarterly revenue, prompting concerns about a broader slowdown in demand amid economic uncertainty.
“Clearly, growth has slowed globally and thus put more pressure [on Apple] to aggressively go after emerging markets,” said Daniel Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities.
A ‘mega-market’
Ives predicts that “over the coming years, Indonesia, Malaysia and India will comprise a bigger piece of the pie for Apple, given its efforts in these countries.”
The start of online sales in a country usually precedes the launch of brick-and-mortar stores for Apple, he told CNN. This was true of India, for instance, which got its first physical outlets last month and a pledge from Cook to further invest in the country.
Thursday’s launch showed how Apple was “further cementing” its presence in emerging markets, according to Chiew Le Xuan, a research analyst who covers smartphones in Southeast Asia for Canalys.
He said the tech giant had been “actively increasing” its presence in the region in recent months, ramping up its distribution and network of authorized resellers, especially in Malaysia.
Apple has ample room to run in these markets.
Currently, the company only operates its own stores in more developed regional economies, such as Thailand and Singapore, according to Canalys.
Even Indonesia, a vast archipelago that is the world’s sixth-biggest smartphone market, doesn’t have a physicalApple store yet, said Chiew. Apple’s market share there is tiny, at just 1% in 2022, according to Canalys data.
“We’re putting efforts in a number of these markets and really see, particularly given our low share and the dynamics of the demographics … a great opportunity for us,” Cooksaid during Apple’s results call.
Apple joins a growing list of global businesses that have become bullish on Southeast Asia, where more investment is being poured into manufacturing.
The region’s consumer base also holds promise, with the number of middle-income and affluent households in economies such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines projected to grow by around 5% annually through 2030, according to the Boston Consulting Group.
The consultancy has called this group of consumers “the next mega-market.”
The allure of Southeast Asia’s rising middle class “has changed the dynamic in these countries, which previously Apple stayed away from,” according to Ives.
“This is a golden opportunity for Apple,” he said.
Challenges remain
For years, premium brands like Apple have have struggled to compete in emerging markets because of the price of their products, choosing instead to rely on local resellers.
iPhones, which cost between $470 and $1,100, are expensive for consumers in less developed Southeast Asian economies, where the bulk of smartphone shipments are priced under $200, according to Chiew.
He said Apple’s absence from places like Cambodia or Vietnam was typically more apparent around the launch of a new iPhone, as buyers from those countries often flew to Singapore or Malaysia to purchase devices and take them back for resale.
A view of an Apple store at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in 2020. Buyers from other Southeast Asian countries without their own Apple stores typically line up outside such outlets to buy devices for resale, according to an analyst.
Edgar Su/Reuters
This could change in the coming years, particularly as Apple continues to increase its firepower in the region.
Ives predicted that Apple could “further expand its ecosystem and tentacles to emerging markets using itsChina playbook,” meaning it could try to hook customers through “various pricing strategies and building out from there.”
Once those users have converted to Apple’s operating system, iOS, they tend to stick around and become loyal customers, he added.
This has “been the core part of its success in China that now can be replicated in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, among others,” said Ives.
But Apple may face hurdles in Southeast Asia, where several countries have placed stringent requirements on foreign businesses, according to Chiew.
For example, at least 35% of the components of electronic goods sold in Indonesia must made locally, a threshold Apple has had to meet by working with partners, he added.Similar rules prevented Apple from setting up shop in India for years until the relaxation of regulations in 2019. And while consumers are becoming more affluent, the company’s price points are still considered high in many emerging markets, noted Ives. “Growth will be choppy we believe.”

Cobalt, a Crucial Battery Material, is Suddenly Superabundant! How an Obstacle to the Energy Transition Disappeared
Just a year ago a global crunch in one metal looked likely to single-handedly derail the energy transition. Not only was cobalt, a crucial battery material, being dug up far too slowly to meet soaring demand, but the lion’s share of known reserves sat in Congo, a country rife with instability, corruption and child labour. Fast forward to today and the price of the blue metal, which had more than doubled between summer 2021 and spring 2022, to $82,000 a tonne, has collapsed to $35,000, not far from historic lows.
The story is partly one of reduced demand. Most cobalt goes into the battery packs which power smartphones, tablets and laptops. Appetite for these, already strong in the 2010s, exploded during the covid-19 pandemic. It has since waned as people spend less time staring at their screens: as demand for consumer electronics fell, so did that for cobalt. Even a boom in electric vehicles has not been sufficient to counteract this, since manufacturers have done their best to reduce use of the formerly super-expensive metal.
At the same time supply is rising, and fast. Susan Zou of Rystad Energy, a consultancy, forecasts that Congolese production will jump by 38% this year, to 180,000 tonnes. Most striking is a surge in Indonesian exports, which are projected to hit 18,000 tonnes this year, up from virtually none a few years ago. The world could find itself swimming in cobalt.
In other markets low prices would force producers to shut mines. Not for cobalt. The price has already fallen below many miners’ break-even point. Yet Glencore, the world’s biggest, said on February 15th that it may keep output nearly unchanged this year, having cranked it up in 2022; China Moly, a rival, is about to open a new facility that may yield 30,000 tonnes a year (equivalent to 16% of the world’s output in 2022). Big firms can tolerate low prices because cobalt is a by-product of the extraction of copper and nickel, both of which remain pricey. Electric-vehicle makers the world over are courting Indonesia for nickel, kick-starting projects that will also yield cobalt. China Moly’s monster mine in Congo will produce three times as much copper as it will the blue metal.
Prices may still rise a bit this year, as speculators seek to snap up bargains. Beyond 2025, however, another dampener looms. By this time, the first wave of electric-vehicle batteries, which typically last up to eight years, will begin to be recycled, reducing the need for new supply. No matter how fast the energy transition speeds up, the blue gold is unlikely to act as a brake.■
