Afterschool Hangout
Really proud of this piece. Learned a lot about rendering and scene composition. I think there's still a lot to improve on, especially with my composition process, but I'm still really happy with how this turned out.
This piece showcases Mt. Obelisk. A mountain that looms over the port city of Li-Luan; A tight-knit colony whose manufacturing focuses on multi-year ship travels. The town boasts a vibrant fishing community which is spurred on by biological organizations who wish to learn more about the locale's equally vibrant aquatic biome consisting of sprawling mangrove forests and magical reefs teeming with life.
The piece also shows students sharing an after school drink under the sun. Their uniform is definitely inspired by the asian sailor uniform which was popular where I grew up. A lot of my childhood was referenced in coming up with the idea of this town. Especially in how green and cooling nature's shade was during a warm equatorial afternoon.
I'm sure our childhood wasn't unique, but it was crazy how many ways you could fill up your after school afternoon days with, especially when you've got a bunch of kids growing up a 5 minute walk away from the beach and surrounded by overgrown lots of never finished construction houses. Houses and buildings built so close to one another made such a huge world feel like a tight, warm hug.

I'm so excited to finally post this.
My full Murder Drones reference! so hopefully I can keep up consistency
Obviously, this is full of my own head canons so close ups and explanations under the cut (it's a LOT) >;]
To be totally honest my focus was on the main characters, and I think that shows in the designs of the Manor Drones and Cabin Fever Squad. BUT I'll still do my best to explain my process here.
For the Disassemblers I decided to do very different builds for each but the same color pallet.
My idea here was that since each have a different designation letter, that was akin to their model type. That's also why "the company" was able to clone J so easily, they just had her model on file. (also like to imagine there are 26 different forms of the Disassemblers Imao).
I had all the colors remain the same to show their unity and of course the Absolute Solver-ification of the basic Worker Drone color scheme. Essentially, I just took the monochromatic WD colors and put the highlighter yellow over it that Cyn loves so much.
For J I did a more lean and strong build. I wanted her to exude that leader energy. I also made her Core a star shape for similar reasons and then I also noticed that N and V had caution stripes at the top of their legs but as far as I could see J didn't, so I decided to add those to the very top of her legs to finish the garter belt look she's got going on. For her hair, I actually really like the pigtails I just flattened them out a bit because the big cutesy poof they had didn't fit her style in my opinion. I brought it back for her worker form though.
With V I gave her a round yet sharp look. (My favorite added detail is the sharp shoulders) I did make her the shortest of the DD because everyone loves the small but vicious archetype. For her core I made it a sword or spear shape, because she's extra violent. And finally, I made her legs a little more pointed than J's to finish off the sharp look.
Last but CERTAINLY not least, N's design is meant to be soft and plushy but still has a little edge to it. His hair is fluffy but the tufts curl to be sharp, His core is meant to look like a heart but it's upside down so the point is still facing the top (which makes it look more like a club but whatever) I gave him a rounder torso than the other two and his elbow and kneecaps are softer too. His general construction is still menacing, though, so don't get too comfortable with all the fluff. I also spent a LONG time contemplating if I should make his thighs black to look like little biker shorts to contrast with J and V's sock looks but went against it because I love how the hazard stripes stand out against the white.
For N and V's worker forms I basically took out all the sharp edges and rounded them out. J's still a little sharp though not as much.
With the Workers I did the opposite of the DD. They have the EXACT same body types (minus Uzi because she's little) and instead I changed their color schemes to all be unique to their eye lights
Since Worker Drones were made to... well... WORK I think their initial manufacturing would be pretty uniform. A copy and paste if you will. It was only when they were left to their own devices that the WD started to customize themselves. Thus came the wigs and clothes.
I like to think the color started with those infected with the Solver, so Yeva and Nori gained color and then passed that on to their kids. Thats also why Alice has color, but Khan, The Manor Squad, and some other drones in the colony don't. Does not explain Lizzy and Thad though (maybe they have a distant relative that had the solver idk)
It was a lot harder to infer about what a base WD body would look like Maybe I was just looking in the wrong places, but I had to infer with things like the worker helmets, we see every WD except Uzi wear one but they seem more coordinated with their outfits so I decided to just continue my color head-canon that its naturally monochrome and you can customize it if you want to!
I added a light to the feet of the worker drones to match the hand lights. I don't think there's a canon reason for the lights but, on the workers at least. I think they're there to help them do grunt work in the dark! to light their ways in caves or tight spaces so they could do their job better. Now they're just another robot cosmetic
For the Parents, I gave them wrinkles because I thought it was unfair that Khan was the only one who got them. So, Nori gets crow's feet hurray! No but I probably had the most difficult time with these drones. It was hard to separate the canon from fanon since we know so little about them, but I fought off all the demons to keep their designs relatively grounded. Minus Khan's scar. And Alice's more natural horns. and-
I also gave some drones eyelashes. just cause. if I thought it fit, I added it and if it didn't, I didn't add it.
Now you may be wondering "Lexo what's up with all the cracks!?" the idea here is that it's the solver taking over. We see in Cabin Fever and Home that the solver virus fundamentally changes the body of a drone. The crack in the casing is basically this process. Depending on the stage of which your drone is at it changes the intensity. We see Cyn being the main host and essentially patient 0, so she has the most cracks. It starts at the core then spreads until it reshapes you entirely and you become a Disassembly Drone. Unless you stop it in time. Thats why J, V, and N have the pale lines on the bottom of their torso, they're more pretty and cleaner since they achieved the solvers "final form" so to speak. Nori and Yeva on the other hand, have repaired cracks but they're still messy since they were stopped mid-way. Alice, however, did not stop the spread with the solver cure since she was "abandoned" so instead she just cut out her core entirely. Yup. Shes functioning on pure insanity and spite at this point. And then of course with the new hosts, there is light spreading. TL: DR the cracks are a zombie bite.
But that's it for my Murder Drones head canons and designs! If you read all the way to the end, you're a champ and I love you. Have a cookie superstar <3🍪

Jake, Samuel, and Aiden had been best friends since kindergarten. They have always done everything together. So of course after they graduated they hoped to get the same labor assignment. It was a long shot though, as the mandated manual labor program could place them at farms, factories, and work sites anywhere across the state.
The best buds were hanging around one the summer after graduation, only a week away from receiving their labor assignments.
"Man, I hope I get assigned to a work farm," said Jake, in the light blue flannel and black Carhartt overalls. "I love working outside."
"Me too," said Samuel, in the dark blue flannel and matching black Carhartts. "I always did well in our Agricultural Studies class." School curricula had changed a lot since the Overalls for All Act, with boys being required to take several vocational courses to prepare them for a life of manual labor.
"I don't get want I get assigned," Aiden, in the red flannel and dark brown overalls, said glumly. "I just want to get assigned with you guys."
Samuel put a comforting hand on Aiden's shoulder, "I hope so too, Aiden. But it's no guarantee. It's not up to us to choose our assignment."
"I know, I know. We have to obey what our leaders tell us. Believe me, I trust in their wisdom and leadership," Aiden said. "But we've always been together. I don't know if I go for two years of assigned labor without you guys."
Jake came over and placed a hand on Aiden's bib. "Dude, even if we are separated, we'll still be united in our overalls! That's why our leaders have us wear them. All men are united through our uniform, our labor, and our obedience to our leaders!"
Aiden felt a swell of pride in his chest as he placed his hand on Jake's bib. "You are totally right Jake! Overalls for All has made our country a better place. As long as we obey and wear our overalls, we'll always be together!" Aiden then placed both hands on his overalls straps, a standard salute, "Overalls for All!"
Jake and Samuel returned the gesture and said in unison, "Overalls for All!"
The young men had learned well in school to trust the new systems put in place. Their leaders had tirelessly worked to ensure all men have a future as long as they trust and obey the leader's policies. Overalls for All as one of the most sweeping and historic pieces of legislation in the country's history, but it's success had been even more monumental, with men across the country embracing their uniform overalls and labor requirements.
The friends would receive their assignments a week later and alas they did not receive the same assignment. Jake was indeed assigned to a work farm where he spent each day cleaning the pigsty, a dirty job he was honored to carry out. Samuel was assigned to a factory, helping manufacture products that would serve the whole country. And finally, Aiden was assigned to a construction site, helping build a new civic center that would offer the newly required masculinity courses that male citizens were mandated to take. But whenever Aiden, or Jake or Samuel, missed their old friends, all he had to was salute with both hands on his straps and say, full of masculine pride and conviction, "Overalls for All", and he knew somewhere out there his friends were doing the same.

Disclaimer: Happy Eid-El Fitr, everyone! I'm glad to see our beloved customers once again. I must say, I've missed you all. My apologies for the long hiatus; March was not a good month for me. Aside from Ramadan, it took me a while to return to the game after my grandma's passing. I was fully devastated by the loss and felt hope fading away. But I realized I must stay strong and never give up hope. Anyway that's hella of Disclaimer tho.. So Let's Cut the Chase.

Overview
The M69 (Obr.69) uniform, part of the 1969 Uniform reforms for the Soviet Armed Forces, included Summer and Winter variants. Summer uniforms, made from M43/Obr.43 Gymnastyorka material, featured branch-specific insignia for garrison duty. In 1973, the uniform was updated with thicker cotton and "CA" shoulder boards. The Winter version, made from Wool Gaberdine, was worn with Ushanka hats and full insignia. Troops in hot climates had Tropical versions, and a Dress version was used for formal occasions. Standard until the late 1980s, it was eventually replaced by the M88/Obr.88 "Afghanka" pattern. I Must say it was My Personal Favorite Of Soviet Outfit After Gymnastyorka and Afghanka Despite This one Less Popular Than The two.
Battle Dress Uniform

Specials
Standard Issue Winter Coat Used by Soviet Army During Cold War
HEADWEAR
Thank you For @sarkana-sims For Lending some of Her OC to me for become A Showcasing Model!
Soviet Army Peaked Cap: Intially worn just by Motorized Rifle generals, this pattern and color combination expanded in 1980 to include Medical, Veterinary, Intendance and Special Troops' generals. Externally virtually identical to a standard officer's service cap; it differs only in the all-gilt cockade and the general style buttons. Inspection of the inside construction - with its kid leather sweatband with interweaved ribbon, silk (or rayon) lining, and manufacturer's label - is a more certain means of identification. Note that you will sometimes see these general-grade caps with the standard officer cockade and star-embossed buttons, probably indicating use by colonels anticipating promotion! Although really any officer could wear these if they wanted to pay for the higher quality
M35 Pilotka:The M35 Pilotka is a type of military cap used by the Soviet Union during the mid-20th century. It was introduced in 1935 and became a standard part of the Soviet uniform during World War II. The Pilotka features a soft, foldable design with a small visor at the front and is typically made of wool. It often included a red star insignia on the front to signify its Soviet origin. The Pilotka was worn by enlisted personnel and officers across various branches of the Soviet Armed Forces. Officers Variation Exist Featuring more Extravagants Insignia apart from Standard Red Star with Hammer & Sickle:
SSh-40 Combat Helmet: The SSh-40 is like the classic car of Soviet helmets, a true workhorse that saw action during World War II and beyond. It's that iconic steel dome-shaped headgear you often see in old war footage. Made of good ol' sturdy steel, it offered decent protection against shrapnel and small arms fire. Plus, it had those distinctive flared-out sides to cover your ears, giving you that unmistakable Soviet soldier look. It might not have been the most comfortable thing to wear, but hey, it did the job, and it looked badass while doing it. This Particular Model Is Got Strapped off Above the head.
Thank you!

If a patient got their penis stuck in an elevator. How would Dr. Ramsey suggest he get it out?
Hi Nonny. Here's how I think the situation would play out. Set early in intern year.
Unfortunate Misadventures
Premise: Ethan Ramsey had seen people do stupid things before, but none quite like this.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Crack/Fluff Words: 1,890
A/N: Submission to @choiceschallenge-may2023 prompt "crying"
Dr. Ethan Ramsey marched down a busy hospital hallway, a man on a mission. He nodded absently as others called out greetings but otherwise kept moving.
He had a to-do list as long as his arm and not enough hours in the day to cross off every item. He’d started coming into the hospital earlier than usual and leaving later. He had to balance his patients, the diagnostics team and Naveen’s care. Sleep could wait.
The fellowship competition was another thing taking too much of his time. He couldn’t very well pass off the evaluations to another physician. The number one intern would be an integral part of his team. Ethan needed to ensure he selected the right person for the job.
He thought it wasn’t just about having the potential to be a good doctor. The successful candidate must have the drive to excel against all odds. They would essentially complete four years of training in two.
The traditional training route was hard enough, but this…
Ethan had meant it when he told Harper the interns weren’t ready. He could name only a handful of doctors he’d met over the years that could accomplish the feat and do it well.
The new crop of interns seemed eager enough, he supposed. And Ethan wondered if he would’ve been the same had he been given this chance at the start of his residency. The answer, of course, was absolutely. He’d have jumped at it and taken the top spot.
Speaking of interns, or one in particular. He glanced over his shoulder to make sure he wasn’t being followed. Dr. Valentine had a bad habit of spying on him, especially when he was on his way to visit Naveen in the new wing under construction.
He’d had to change directions more than once to throw her off his tail. Despite her poor showing on the fellowship rankings, she was incredibly observant. He would have to be clever in shaking her off to keep his promise of secrecy to Naveen intact.
Relieved that the coast was clear, he ducked into a stairwell, running down two flights to exit near an elevator bank intended for the new wing. Not yet operational, it was protected from the construction grime by a combination of tarps and flattened cardboard boxes. The manufacturer’s sticker was still visible in places.
Ethan checked his wristwatch. He had an hour before he needed to be back for a patient consult. That gave him enough time to begin the next round of differentials during Naveen’s dialysis cycle.
He was halfway down the hallway when one of the elevator doors slid open. Surprised at the unexpectedness of it, Ethan turned his head toward the expanding space between the doors. He came face to face with a young man in an orderly’s uniform holding up a cell phone and masturbating vigorously inside.
Ethan’s brows snapped together when he realized the man was filming himself. “Oh, for Christ’s sake!”
The man heard him and gasped loudly, the cell phone slipping from his hands to fall on the ground with a loud clatter. Still holding the penis hanging out the front of his trousers, he took an inadvertent step forward and tripped over a piece of loose cardboard on the floor.
Later, Ethan would think Shakespeare would’ve had a field day with this comedy of errors.
As the man stumbled, the elevator doors began to slam shut, catching the man’s erect penis and fist in a crack barely big enough for a flat hand. The door sensors jammed, so the two ends didn’t pull apart when sensing an obstruction.
The orderly sucked deep breaths as the cold metal pressed against his penis. And then he started screaming, a loud shrill sound like a steam train racing down the tracks.
Ethan jumped into action, placing his hands in the narrow opening and pushing the doors in opposite directions. Unfortunately for the young man, they didn’t budge.
“Hold on!”
Ethan hissed as he once again flexed the muscles in his arms, braced his feet for balance and tightened his grip on the edges of the doors. Nothing moved.
“It fucking hurts, man,” the man cried in pain. “Do something!”
Ethan couldn’t see his face well, but he heard the tears and distress in his voice.
“The doors are stuck,” Ethan said gently, stepping back to examine the situation. He reached for his phone and unlocked it. “We’ll need to call Building Facilities.”
And page the ED resident on duty for a possible traumatic rupture of the corpus cavernosum, he thought, observing the bruising and swelling forming under the skin.
He texted specific instructions to Nurse Bentley, who’d been in charge of the Emergency Department for as long as he’d been at Edenbrook. He knew she could be relied on to act quickly in an emergency.
“Take deep breaths,” he said calmly. “And whatever you do, don’t let go of your—”
“Is Little Mickey okay? Give it to me straight, doc,” the man practically screamed the latter in anguish.
Ethan heard the panic in the man’s voice and tamped down his own impatience. What he’d been doing was undoubtedly stupid and reckless, not to mention unprofessional. Still, he was a patient in dire need of medical intervention. He could only hope the man would regret his poor life choices when feeling better.
“What’s your name?”
Ethan had to repeat himself twice, raising his voice above the man’s loud whimpers.
“Mickey,” he sputtered. “They call me Big Mickey.”
Of course, they do, thought Ethan. He probably should’ve guessed from his earlier comment about Little Mickey.
“Okay, Mickey. I’m Dr. Ramsey,” Ethan said slowly, keeping his voice calm and composed, as Naveen had taught him when dealing with hypercharged situations.
“Help is on the way,” he continued. “In the meantime, I need you not to wiggle like that. It’ll only put more pressure on the corpus cavernosum.”
“Corpa-what?!? Am I dying, doc? Are they going to cut off my junk?”
“Fucking Christ,” Ethan cursed under his breath when Mickey started shouting and blubbering, already mourning the hypothetical loss of his appendage.
Out of patience, he pinched the bridge of his nose and swallowed back the unhelpful words sitting on the tip of his tongue.
Ethan looked up at the sound of rushing feet. He breathed a sigh of relief when Nurse Bentley rounded the corner, followed by two orderlies pushing a gurney and a man in coveralls holding a thick crowbar and large toolbox. Cassie brought up the rear, her green eyes wide with curiosity.
“Valentine, stop gawking and get over here,” Ethan snapped in annoyance.
He saw her confusion as she approached the elevator and crouched at eye level. He wanted to smirk when she spun on her heels, her mouth open in shock, but he controlled himself.
“Is that his—” she whispered loudly.
“His penis? Yes, it is,” he responded in a tone that said it should be obvious.
Ethan quickly summarized the situation for the team and barked instructions, practically shouting to be heard over Mickey’s screaming expletives.
The Building Facilities worker inserted a crowbar through the opening and used a mechanical lever to pry the doors. It was an arduous process as the metal doors creaked under pressure and slowly began to slide away from each other.
“Where’s the senior ED resident on duty?” Ethan asked, brows furrowed. An intern shouldn’t be working without supervision this early in their training.
“Taking a personal day,” Cassie said, eyes locked on the extraction efforts. “Dr. Anderson had an abscessed tooth and went in for emergency dental surgery.”
She turned her shoulders slightly toward him, watching him from the corner of her eyes. He forced himself to not notice how her eyes sparkled like emeralds up close. Or how her lips curved into a smile, lighting up the room with warmth.
“I’ve got this, Dr. Ramsey,” she said confidently, tucking a lock of blonde hair behind one ear.
“Is that so, Rookie?” Ethan scoffed. “Fine. What’s your initial diagnosis? And while you’re at it, tell me your treatment plan for the patient. What type of consults will you need? What about imaging?”
“Well…I mean…I still have to…” Cassie stumbled over her responses to his rapid-fire questions.
The doors finally opened wide enough for the orderlies to extract Mickey from his precarious position. Exhausted from the pain and holding still in one place, his legs started to give way, and his body became limp.
Ethan leaped forward and caught Mickey by the armpits before he could hurt himself further by falling down headfirst. He handed the patient over to the orderlies, who carried him to the gurney, carefully avoiding his red and swollen shaft.
“Nurse Bentley?” he called out.
“Yes, Dr. Ramsey?” she said, standing to attention.
“Make sure Dr. Valentine conducts a thorough exam and arranges an MRI,” he instructed, ignoring the nasty look Cassie threw at him. “Inform Radiology, I need those scans, stat. And page Dr. Tanaka. Tell him I requested a surgical consult for the patient.”
Nurse Bentley sprang into action, talking calmly and gently to the patient as they wheeled him away.
Ethan glanced at the time and sighed heavily. His visit to Naveen would have to be cut short. He barely had time to check on his mentor, let alone run through the differentials.
He turned toward the new wing when he saw Cassie standing before him, arms folded across her chest and a determined look in her eyes.
“Shouldn’t you be with your patient, Dr. Valentine?” he said coolly, arching one eyebrow.
“I’m a fast walker,” she bit out. “I’ll catch up.”
Ethan could see the anger on her face and in the stiffness in her body. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she reopened them, they were calm once more.
“I knew what to do,” she said. “If you’d given me a chance to respond, I would have outlined all the steps you mentioned.”
“But you didn’t,” Ethan said dismissively. “In an emergency, doctors have a split second to take decisive action. You failed at that today.”
“But—”
“Enough!” Impatient to get to Naveen, Ethan held up his hand to stop her protests. “Learn from this experience and don’t make the same mistake again. Is that clear, Rookie?”
He could tell she wanted to argue, but she didn’t. She nodded abruptly and hurried down the corridor to catch up with her patient.
Ethan watched her retreating back until she turned the corner and disappeared. He imagined she would call him all sorts of unflattering names when she met up with her friends at Donahue’s tonight. He’d certainly done the same about some of his attendings at that age. It was practically a rite of passage.
He cursed when he realized he’d been standing there staring at the empty hallway and thinking about Cassie Valentine for the last five minutes. Walking in the opposite direction, he grumbled internally that he didn’t have time for this.
Dr. Valentine was in the running for a spot on his team. Plus, she was an intern, he rationalized as he neared Naveen’s hospital room. He did not get involved with interns.
And that, as far as he was concerned, was the end of the matter.

And it was such a small thing that Geordi would never have remembered it if it weren't for now, but just yesterday, at the banquet, there was a moment when the ambassador from Xeno VIII approached them while they chatted at the bar in Ten Forward. He was flushed purple and had been gushing about Data before he'd even come within earshot.
Touching the arm of his fascination, he began spinning through all the advances in positronic technology his world had developed in the past few years. Geordi and Data had listened politely as he elaborated on the unprecedented complexity of the nanomechanical parts they could manufacture, the efficiency of the coolant system that allowed the simultaneous running of contact networks, the sheer scope of the emergent thought chains that purportedly surpassed the quadrant's largest quantum computers. He even suggested that Data study their work to produce another android like himself. Geordi specifically remembered him saying the words, "You could create a child of your very own."
At that point, he'd paused for breath and taken a sip of his drink. Data cocked his head in the way he always did before sharing his opinion.
"While I acknowledge the value of your species' contributions to the field of positronic robotics," Geordi now recalled him saying, "I do not believe that is necessary. I have already performed several experiments of the nature you describe, and after analyzing the results, I have decided not to continue my research. My interest in this subject is extremely limited." Then he'd stood up and walked away in a manner that Geordi would have described as "curt" if he didn't know better.
The ambassador looked confused. Geordi shrugged. "Guess he's made up his mind about that."
Then he'd caught up with Data a few minutes later, just as he'd started reciting one of his Spot poems to a drunken Lwaxana Troi, making Geordi completely forget that awkward moment. But now he was thinking about it, how strange it had felt at the time. Data had seemed almost offended for a second, which was unsettling, and even more unsettling was that Geordi couldn’t for the life of him figure out why. Data had described his interest in positronic robotics as "extremely limited," but he knew that wasn't true - his android friend had always taken an acute interest in his own construction.
It had been an accident. Earlier today, Data had asked Geordi to visit his quarters and feed Spot while he attended Dr. Crusher's tap-dance lesson. Geordi had performed his duty with honor and, feeling tired, leaned against the wall between a couple of Data's paintings. Then he had removed his visor - something he normally remembered to do only in his own quarters - to rub the spots where it dug in the most. But in doing so, he failed to see Spot approaching, or predict that she might pounce on his leg and dig her claws into the fabric of his uniform. Geordi started, and shooed her off, remembering that he had to be gentle with his friend's prized pet, but not that there was an easel mere inches away from his flailing. There was a loud thump.
Geordi sucked in a breath. He quickly reattached his visor and scanned the belongings he had knocked to the floor, relieved that there didn't seem to be any damage. He righted the easel to its original position and picked up the small canvas that had fallen face-down on the carpet.
His brow furrowed.
The lilac tarp had sloughed away to reveal an unfinished portrait, already saturated with Data's penchant for stylistic design and subtle color variation. Geordi saw a young woman sitting in an opalescent white room, hands engaged with a sketch of a bridge console. Data had dressed her in a sapphire uniform resembling recent prototype designs for Starfleet cadets, which Geordi remembered him showing him last week. More captivating than any of that, however, was her face. He squinted to see it better.
Her face was pale, narrow and sharp, with dark brown hair gathered around it in a stylish bob. The woman had red painted lips, a still-soft jaw that betrayed her youth, and a peculiar intelligence living inside her violet eyes. The eyes were by far the most completed detail of the painting. They bored into Geordi with such a particular presence that he felt compelled to make eye contact, as if Data's painted girl was real, as if, by some magic, she could see Geordi as clearly as he saw her. There was something almost...Soong-type about the look she gave him.
Geordi sucked in a breath and held it.
Suddenly, the door slid open, starting him, and Data was striding back into his quarters, pausing when he saw his friend still there.
"My apologies, Geordi," he said. "It seems I have wasted your time. The dance lesson ended prematurely because Commander Riker sprained - "
His gaze jutted to what Geordi was holding.
"Sorry, Data," he rushed out, "I wasn't trying to intrude. I knocked your easel over by accident, and was making sure I hadn't ruined your work-in-progress before putting it back." That would have sounded like a bad lie to anyone else, but luckily, this was Data he was talking to.
Data came up close and took the painting. "That is all right," he said quietly, and placed it on the easel. "It appears no harm has been done."
He stepped back to look at it. Geordi picked up the tarp on the floor and handed it over so that Data might reinstate whatever privacy he desired for his work. Data took it wordlessly, but just held it, as if he didn't realize Geordi had given it to him. Standing close to one another, the two spent a moment in silent observation. The only sound was Geordi's anxious sighs. He couldn't stop thinking about what Data had said to the ambassador yesterday.
Finally, he said, "What inspired you this time, Data?"
"A dream I had." Data loved to elaborate. Geordi waited; he did not.
He looked at his friend. The android's profile was as strong and unmoved as ever, but there was an incredulous quality to his voice. This suggested to Geordi that the subject of the dream had mused Data to a degree he hadn't expected. But looking at that pretty, tilted head, he couldn't bring himself to be surprised by that.
"She looks very sure of herself," was all he could think to exhale.
"Yes." Data brightened. "I believe that the next generation of Starfleet cadets will have the advantage of building off of recent advancements in curriculum material and educational philosophy. This will allow them to begin their training with a higher degree of confidence compared to previous generations of students. The aptitude Lal might have achieved in - "
He paused in seeing how Geordi had snapped his head towards him at the name. Data took his eyes from the canvas and cocked his head, just like his painted lady, mystified by his friend's distress.
"You wanted Lal to be in Starfleet," Geordi said, with devastated awe.
Data's facial muscles spasmed, as if making a terribly high-order calculation. "I believe it would have been the best way for her to acquire most of the skills I am often praised for by my friends and superiors. I am told that many parents experience a desire for their children to 'follow in their footsteps.' It would seem that I am no exception."
Geordi fell silent and shook his head. The more Data spoke on the matter, the more difficult he found it to swallow the heartbreak curdling in his throat.
"And you've been dreaming about that?"
"It appears so." Data's voice dropped in volume again. "Though I am aware that events perceived during sleep do not always make logical sense, they are often reflective of internal desires that may be advisable to act on in waking life. As such, I find myself compelled to search for a constructive action driven by my subconscious image of Lal as a Starfleet cadet. So far, I have failed.” Was Geordi imagining the mournful song in his voice?
“There is no way to repair Lal - her body is now in the permanent custody of Dr. Maddox in a state of irreparable dysfunction,” he continued, grimly. “I cannot act on the desires these dreams express.”
Dreams. Plural. Not for the first time, Geordi wondered if grief was even an emotion.
Then Data perked up. "I have found that the most satisfying way to process experiences I cannot use to refine my logical subroutines is to use them for artistic inspiration," he said. “Counselor Troi advised me to do so when I mentioned these dreams to her.”
It made sense, Geordi supposed. He had no traditionally creative hobbies himself, but he often dealt with things he couldn't understand by immersing himself in technical design. His feelings often came out in the engineering solutions he discovered. But what could possibly be gained from something like losing a daughter?
He thought again of what the ambassador had suggested. "A child of your very own." If a child was what Data wanted to begin with, it made sense that, armed with the knowledge he had learned, he might try to create another since the first one...failed. But he had expressed no desire to. In fact, he seemed emphatically opposed to the idea. Geordi felt wretched for wanting to pick his friend's brain on a matter so heavy, but he couldn't help himself, and he knew there was no way to offend Data with his curiosity.
"Data..." he began, as gently as he knew how, "do you ever think that you might want to, uh. Try again? You know, have another ch - android?"
Data looked over his work again. Geordi saw him stare into Lal's impossibly lifelike eyes, into time, medium, space, into indescribable dimensions. The foolish waking dream. Perhaps, deep inside, he had discovered something after all.
"No, Geordi," he said, very softly.
A minute muscle altered his expression.
"She was enough."
