The legitimacy and importance of a designer is often measured by how “big” their clients are. But this leaves out any expectation that a designer own their power and have a moral compass when it comes to work we are willing to take on. My manifesto: don’t do anything that helps move wealth from the many to the few— that means no big corporate brands that suck value from the earth or people, no exploitative messaging. Ontario’s right to disconnect act has kicked in. Experts say it’s good ‘in theory’

Ontario's right to disconnect law could lead to a pan-Canada approach but experts say it's important to observe the impact of the practice on the well-being of employees and its practical application in the workplace before considering a national approach.

The right to disconnect refers to “not engaging in work-related communications, including emails, telephone calls, video calls or sending or reviewing other messages, to be free from the performance of work.” The law went into effect in Ontario on June 3.

One expert says it sounds like a really good idea and has been described as very promising by others who have tried it.

Ontario has become the first province in the world to require employers to ensure workers can disconnect from their jobs after hours.

It's great that Ontario is leading the way but it's time for others to follow suit.

Dr. Lisa Belanger, CEO and founder of ConsciousWorks, says it's better to start working on improving company cultures now rather than wait for the policy to come into effect.

Working from home is muddling the line between work and personal time, according to Ackhar Law, a Toronto-based law firm. Belanger said now is the time to get leaders to think through what flexible work is and what the future of work looks like.

Employees should have the right to disconnect and not think about work all the time, according to Gohar Law Firm.

The Act itself doesn't provide many details about how this new law will work.

The new policy was inspired by a French law that gives workers the right to turn off electronic devices when at home but is still in its early stages.

Global News reached out to other provinces to see if they'll be following suit, but only British Columbia provided a response. A spokesperson for B.C.'s Ministry of Labour said in an e-mail that the ministry is aware of Ontario's new right to disconnect law.
