today, Topher finally decided to attempt this LEGO build. I’ve been waiting for this day for the longest time. I knew he could do it, but he didn’t think he could. he had been waiting for his big brother to do it for him, because his big brother was “better at it” and “he didn’t know how”. Or he “wasn’t fast enough”. it’s not easy having an older brother who was good at many things. I wasn’t going to be around to help because I needed to rest and his brother was busy with other things. and so it seemed like the best time to try - there would be no one to tell him what to do. he decided to go for it. ✌️ and… he had a great time by himself. he built one section, got stuck here and there, started playing with it before it was finished (this has always been his style) and then built the different parts as he liked. not pushing him to try before he was ready, giving him space and staying out of his way was key here. ☝️ he was really happy, and very importantly - having the satisfaction of play and knowing that he actually could do it by himself. and he got the decide the end result too. it wasn’t just about building the mech, but the whole process of putting it together. this is a quiet child learning to build his confidence in himself in new skills. he never follows instructions, and he tried it today. I’m so proud of this kid. I didn’t have to do anything active, but wait and support his choices. And pull apart a few mistakes he put together because I have stronger fingers. 😂 it’s also about the language we chose to use, and how we learn. applying the skill comes at their own time and pace.
