There are tons of posts and guides online to how to do a Product Hunt launch (lately I think the official one is the best). I don't want to rehash those, here are things I've never seen anywhere about getting Product Hunt launches right. What happened: we just launched the third version of our product on PH. The first version got 659 upvotes, the second 601 and the third 1174—we even beat Uber's brand new marketing video product :-P for the day by over 200 upvotes. Proof: https://www.producthunt.com/time-travel/2017/11/8 Key lessons learned—hope they help you. Disclaimer: there is no magic (too bad I love magic!), it's all about preparation. Couple of months pre-launch: prepare the concertSetup an upcoming page on Product Hunt Ship as early as possible (one of their new features to collect emails of people interested in your product)Make your users part of the product building process: keep them up do date about what you're building, make it easy for people to join the alpha/beta group (without being annoying ofc). Pre-launch: announce the concertMake the launch message for your newsletter, keep the subject and email short. Ours was: It's Official! is LIVE 🚀. The only link in the email should be to your Product Hunt product page and should be included multiple times in the email including a big CTA button. (you won't have the link yet obviously, fill that in at the last minute before sending)Make a list of engaged (potential) users who you've interacted with during the product building process, put them in a CRM (I used Streak) and prepare a personalized message. The tone, length and style should be the same as when you write 'normal' emails. Don't ask them to do anything, but include your product link, they should naturally support you and spread the word if you've done the first step right.Make a list of VIPs (investors, evangelists, very early adopters, fellow founders, influencers etc.) who have demonstrated a genuine interest in your product and with whom you have an existing connection. Write a short individual email for each of them framing the launch in your current conversation with a link to the product asking if they can help spread the word. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, they're not a VIP and you should put them in the previous list. This can take a LONG time, keep the emails in your drafts.Prepare the launch message you will send on Ship (it's one of its features) on the day—this is your secret weapon.Make a list of the sequence of things you will do on the day (different email batch sending, social blasts etc.), it should be extremely precise, on launch day you shouldn't be doing anything but pressing buttons and answering comments/emails all day.Prepare all the assets and text for the launch including your first comment, keep it Product Hunt style (playful, emojis etc.) here's ours: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/startup-tracker-3-0Finally, a week before the launch, send a message (different than the ones you prepared above) to your newsletter, engaged users and on Ship saying you are launching next week. During launch: play the gig!Get your product hunted or hunt it yourself at midnight Pacific Time for maximum length exposure.The race against the clock starts now, paste the your product link into the emails you've prepared above and...Blast to your newsletter immediately to get the initial upvote spike and get on the front pageSend the email to your engaged users at 7 am PT to catch Asia/Europe/US early-risersSend your VIP emails at noon pacific time to keep the traction upAt any point in time if you see that you need more support to keep your product ranked high, send your Ship message, we sent ours around 3 pm PT. Hope this helps! just to prep you, I received about 250 email since the launch, so keep your calendar free for a couple of days after you do something like this.
