The first time Matt kissed Rose, it was in the backseat of his car, rain slipping down the windows like a secret. The music played low, barely audible over the sound of their breath, and his hands were careful, almost hesitant. As if the world was never supposed to let them have this, but he kissed her anyway. It felt like a prayer, something fragile, a moment tucked away.

His hesitation only made Rose feel sick. Stupid. How long had it been since she’d had a crush? One that had driven her crazy? One that came true and that she wished hadn't?

They were careful at first. It was slow, something woven between half-lit hotel rooms, whispers behind closed doors, and the way the moonlit water of the hot tub kissed their skin like a promise. Aquamarine, glowing. His fingers tracing her arms, lingering, like he couldn’t quite believe she was there.

He always left traces of himself on her… on her skin, in the softness of her hair, the smell of him lingering on her clothes. More than cum stains, more than love bites. He’d stained her very soul.

It was all quiet at first. A secret kept in soft sheets, a stolen moment between glances. He’d trace his hands over her back, gentle, like he was drawing something. Some invisible thing only they could see. The invisible marks of something real. She liked to think he'd never forget her, but everything changed when the world started looking.

Because then, it wasn’t a secret anymore.

The leak hit like a storm, unexpected and brutal. One moment, it was just them, lost in the world of quiet touches, and the next, she was the girl in the headlines. The one everyone was talking about. The one with the guy everyone wanted. Framed for it, like a crime. Wrong place, right time.

Right person though. Right?

“Don’t listen to them,” Matt whispered, his voice low against her neck, the words almost drowned in the heat of their skin, his body pressed against hers in that sweet, aching way. “It doesn’t matter.”

But it did.

He pushed inside her, slow and deep, the pleasure washing over her in waves. “Forget about them,” he murmured, his voice hoarse and full of something she couldn’t place, but it sounded like regret. “Just us. Just tonight.”

The word slut slipped into the spaces between flashing cameras, between whispered comments, between those who thought they knew love. They wanted him… how could they not? And they made sure she paid for it. And so sometimes, she’d dress up, just to make it worth it. She’d get drunk, just so she could be drunk in love.

Matt’s hands found her like they always did, steady, careful, pulling her closer. Half asleep, taking his time in the dim light, as though the world outside didn’t exist. His voice was rough against her ear. “You’re worth it.”

Not saying they’d do it anyway. But they were going to.

And once his flight had flown, Matt would leave only the wilt of his rose.

It’s an off day. One of those soft, aimless afternoons that smells like sunscreen and strawberries and pollen. Matt’s recently gotten into film photography… he says he likes that you don’t get to see the picture right away. That it makes him pay attention.

He brings the camera everywhere now. Not in an influencer way. In a boy way. Slung around his neck, smudged viewfinder, thumbprints on the lens kind of way. He doesn’t know what he’s doing yet, but he doesn’t really care.

She’s sitting on the grass beside him, flipping through a used book she found at the flea market that morning. He’s barely reading the one he picked. Keeps glancing over at her instead.

“Stay there,” he says suddenly, lifting the camera. “Don’t move.”

Rose looks up, startled. “What?”

He doesn’t answer. Just squints into the viewfinder, bites his lip, adjusts the focus. Click.

“You’re gonna waste your film,” she murmurs, face half turned away, pretending she’s not flustered.

“I don’t think it’s a waste,” he says.

He takes pictures of her chipped nail polish. Her sunglasses abandoned in the grass. The band-aid on her ankle from the sandal that failed her. Her reflection in a window. The shadow of her hand reaching for his. He won’t say it, but it’s all love notes.

She catches him taking one when she’s not paying attention, just staring out at the street. “You can’t keep doing that,” Rose tells him, kind of laughing.

“Doing what?”

“Catching me off guard. That’s not fair.”

He shrugs, lowering the camera. “That’s when you’re prettiest.”

She freezes, suddenly very aware of the fact that her tank top’s slipping off one shoulder. That her lips are dry. That Matt is still looking at her, camera hanging loose from his neck, lens cap in his palm.

He doesn’t look away.

Rose teases him, “You’re such an artist now.”

“Shut up,” he laughs, cheeks pink.

Later, when he drops off the roll to get developed, he’s fidgety. She asks why.

He says, “I just want them to come out right. Like, I hope it didn’t mess up the ones I really cared about.”

Heat crawls up her neck as she asks, “Which ones?”

Matt doesn’t look at her. 

Maybe he’ll forget everything else in a few months, but not this: her knee nudging against his, how the taste of lemonade would have tasted on her tongue, the way the light pooled around her like a secret he hadn’t yet figured out.

this fic takes place before rose and matt are in a relationship!

She’s not in love with him.

She just thinks about him constantly. That’s different.

It’s Saturday, and they’re holed up in the apartment again. One of the rare quiet ones… no filming, no travel, no interruptions except the low hum of Matt’s playlist and the occasional clink of his ring against a glass. Rose is curled into the corner of the couch, half-watching a movie, half-watching him.

He’s on the floor, legs stretched out, phone in his lap. He’s got his hoodie pulled over his mouth and his hair’s a mess. Barefoot. Distracted. Real.

And it sucks, because she knows what he looks like on camera too.

It’s the same hoodie in both places… on the floor here, in the thumbnails and photographs… but it means something different when it’s in her washing machine. When she’s seen him asleep in it. When she’s smelled his shampoo on it after he’s fallen asleep on her shoulder without meaning to.

Rose hates how it makes her feel. Hates the double vision.

Matt, the boy on the carpet who once asked her what the opposite of déjà vu was. Matt, the person they post about, clip, edit, lust over.

She saw a comment once, under a photo someone tagged him in: “he doesn’t even know what he does to people.”

And he doesn’t. That’s the worst part.

He glances over at her then, catching her in the middle of her overthinking spiral. He smiles, soft and warm like summer. “You good?”

She shrugs. “Just tired.”

He nods like he believes her, then looks back at his phone. His thumb taps the screen a few times, and then her phone buzzes.

matt 🧸 the couch looks lonely without u on this side

She rolls her eyes, but she moves anyway, stepping over his legs to sit beside him on the floor. Close enough for her knee to bump his. He doesn’t move away.

He shows her something on his phone, a stupid TikTok someone made of him, audio slowed down and dramatic. Golden lighting. Girls in the comments calling him ‘perfect.’

Rose forces a laugh. “You’re such a menace. You love watching those.”

“I don’t!” he insists, pushing his hair back. “They’re weird.”

“They think you’re hot.”

He makes a face. “That’s not real.”

She looks at him then, really looks. At the flush in his cheeks, the bite-mark pink of his lower lip, the twinkling gleam of blue around his irises. She knows the slope of his nose, the way his hands tremble when he’s overwhelmed. She knows too much.

“You kind of are,” she says before she can stop herself.

It hangs there, heavier than she meant. He looks over at her, surprised.

She covers fast. “I just mean… objectively.”

He doesn’t say anything for a second. Then: “You think I’m hot?”

His voice is low. Not teasing… quiet. Unreadable.

She doesn’t answer. She’s looking down now, cheeks hot, brain screaming at her. Why did she say that?

He shifts closer, just slightly. “Rose.”

Her name sounds different when he says it like that. Slow and careful and close enough that she feels it against her jaw.

And maybe he doesn’t mean anything by it. Maybe he’s just being Matt, who sometimes gets too close, says too much, looks at her like that without realizing it.

But maybe he does mean it.

Because for a second, the room stills. The air thickens. And it’s like the whole world holds its breath.

She thinks: I don’t like that anyone would die to have you. I don’t like that I would, too.

Then Matt leans in just a little, like he might say something else, but the front door slams open… Nick, loud and chaotic and full of energy. The moment shatters.

Matt blinks, leans back, looks away.

And Rose sits there, stomach twisting, painted in rose blush and regret.

based on my time, 11:05pm ⋆˚࿔ right now...

officeworker!matt and dotty are both winding down for the night. in their separate houses. matt just got off his computer where he spent the last couple hours playing a game with his brothers, but he made a new year's resolution for no screens after midnight, so he's trying to stick with that! dotty is curled up in bed, doing some knitting for one of her sisters, who's recently had a newborn. next to her, luke is trying to explain, very loudly, a funny joke one of his coworkers told him. dotty doesn't quite get it though... and she thinks the "joke" is kinda mean.

goldenboy!chris and daisy are on the phone. well. sun and daisy are, that is. chris had a very loooooong monday, starting with an early practice and then six hours of class so he's pretty tuckered out. he's listening to daisy ramble on about her weekend, and a new café that she went to and is recommending to him. daisy can tell that sun is very sleepy, and she knows that before long he will probably fall asleep, the call still going, and she'll listen to him quietly breathing for awhile before hanging up, sending him three hearts that chris will smile and respond to when he wakes up 🩷🩷🩷

nurse!nick and thomas are both working still! the café thomas works at recently introduced night-time hours, which has been a blessing for nick who is always ravenously hungry after finishing work at the hospital. thomas knows his schedule by heart now, and is definitely not checking the clock in anticipation, croissant ready to be warmed.

firefighter!matt and mouse are actually quite close to each other right now - they just don't know it! matt is at a party with chris, which he didn't really want to go to, but surprisingly, he's having an okay time. meanwhile, mouse is at her favourite local vietnamese place, enjoying some pho and spring rolls :p

detective!chris and buttons are both at the party! one of their mutual friends from the academy invited them both, although buttons really can't stand the sight of chris after work. she's debating leaving, but her friend managed to get a couple of drinks into her, so currently she's dancing on the kitchen island, and chris is just standing watching her like 😯

postman!chris is passed out on the couch in the living room because he feel asleep watching re-runs of old true crime episodes. he's pretty exhausted from this past weekend, catching up with friends and family for his birthday. where starling is, the sun is just coming up, and she's sipping on a cup of tea whilst doing her skincare 🍵

and finally, rascal!chris and dolly are going at it !!!!! she's pretty mad at him because he almost got the cops called on him earlier (...) but they managed to work it out. she didn't even ask him to use a condom this time, that's how desperate they were to get there clothes off. not a lot of talking happened, but dolly is babbling on now, pulling chris's hands to her hips, where she needs to feel them, as he presses her face into the mattress, so close to finishing.

see, i was a little stuck with this. in my mind, i came up with rose as someone famous, but i didn't want it to be strictly an influencer!reader,,, if that makes sense:3

i would say though that she's similar to emma chamberlain content-wise (mainly making lifestyle and fashion content, vlogs, and maybe some modelling)

matt confessed feelings first, rose confessed attraction first. if that makes sense.
