After seeing @bogleech’s post about the importance of diversity in Pokemon’s character designs, I wanted to see how my latest 9 Complien designs stack up to this. In order, these are Neuronophore, Ectopus, Molehole, Oagloab, Corpsoreal, Yoghurt, Ringlet, Baobulb, and Gachaprawn.
I’m only one artist, so unfortunately, there are certain trends and styles I wind up leaning towards, but with that in mind, I feel I’m doing an alright job? That being said, I’d like to see how others feel, before anything...

This is Dracusquid! Dracusquid is a Complien sort of meant to be a “literal vampire squid,” the main reason I selected its purple-red-white color scheme, gave it sharp teeth to suck blood with, and had the webbing between its tentacles flare outwards like a cape! As the grown form of last year’s Bludsquid, I mostly tried to play up all its most notable features while making it a bit more menacing. I had a few earlier designs of Dracusquid I was okay with, but I felt they distanced themselves a bit much from the first form!
Dracusquids are the head of their pack, consisting of themselves and twelve Bludsquids, making for thirteen total. They scavenge the deep sea, looking for whatever prey they can find and ensnaring it in their seven tentacles. Their wide, light-sensitive eyes allow them to easily spot prey, even where sunlight is scarce, though their favorite prey is Lumigae and Maringel, two Compliens with nutritious pods in their heads. While their spikes allow them to easily tear through their skin, however, the bright lights emitted by these two Compliens often can temporarily blind a Dracusquid, or at least briefly send them away.
You can read more about Dracusquid here, and keep checking back all week long for brand new Compliens!

This is Porkie! I think a friend and I designed this Complien way back in the day, nine or ten years ago, though, it looked much different back then than it does today! In fact, for three or so years, I scrapped this one because I couldn’t figure out what to do with it.
But then I went back to the drawing board! Err, sketchpad, and looked at all the details! It had a bright red color scheme and a spike on its face, and I knew exactly what to do! Bright color schemes and spikes seem like the perfect opportunity for some venomous bug, whose colors warn you of the venom you’ll get if you dare mess with it! Ultimately, though, I decided against making it a bug, and decided in favor of making it a cartoon bug, which is, in my professional opinion, a very different thing.
Porkies are common Compliens that live in jungles and other tropical forests, banding together in large groups. Wanderers should look out for their bright red and white patterns, as that is a surefire sign to tell others to stay away! If people are to get into a tussle with a Porkie, then painful venom will be injected into their system through the spike on their face! While this hardly ever kills, usually leaving someone bedridden at absolute worst, the sting is still very painful, and something most would probably rather ignore!
Feel free to read more about Porkie here!

I think there was a holiday starting today. What was it again? Ch... chr... chri....
That’s right! Icy Halloweek starts today! How could I forget? That means another batch of Compliens all week long, starting with Atracandli here! Atracandli is the grown form of Atraigni, a Complien designed by another artist over seven years ago (I’ve been doing this for a long time.) I also have not seen that artist in seven years, but I did see their DeviantArt page once, where they were making fun of us for being bad artists. Jerk. I was ten at the time! I didn’t know any better!
But now I kind of know better and drew this and it looks okay, aside from some maybe sloppy linework. I got Smash today, how was I supposed to focus? If you’re wondering, Atracandlis form their nests in forests, which they subsequently burn down, since they feed on the charcoal that forms from the burnt trees! The charcoal helps their flames burn brighter, though this only makes them more dangerous when they decide to migrate. Some people are hired to protect forests, and try to divert Atracandlis onto other paths. It usually works, unless the ranger has an encounter with a particularly stubborn Atracandli...
You can read more about Atracandli here, and keep on tuning in for brand new Compliens all week long!

And with that, Halloweek 2018 has officially begun! This year, I’ve started drawing all my Funny Little Fellas in advance, so it feels a little less pressuring if I miss a day or two. If I miss three, then I’m in trouble, but hopefully, I won’t miss three. But regardless! It’s started! It’s here! Enjoy the Funny Monsters you will be seeing all week long!
This is Intrusioneer! This two-and-a-half meter tall pillar loves giving you one thing: intrusive thoughts! Persistent intrusive thoughts. Bad ones. I created this monster as a reflection of my own mental condition, because I figured giving it a physical, tangible form would be a really good idea. And it probably was! But then I made it far more powerful than me, which was probably a really bad idea. But hey! That also reflects how I feel, so what am I to do about it?
Feel free to read more about Intrusioneer here, and keep coming back for new spooks all week long!

And with this, we have part three of Halloweek 2018! This is Eeror! A mirror-themed Complien is something I’ve been wanting to do for a good long while now, but figuring out a design I was happy with was a bit rough. Heck, even with Eeror, I sort of think I could’ve picked a more remarkable body plan, but that face was just far too cool to pass up, and I’m still happy enough with this design as the way it turned out.
Eerors, as you could probably expect, have highly reflective faces. While some old tales suggest that staring into their eyes is a “reflection of your true self,” these tales are also largely unfounded. That being said, you can still see yourself in an Eeror’s eyes, but whether or not you want to depends on if you’re on good terms with the Eeror itself. Eerors are generally not harmful if left unbothered, but rub an Eeror the wrong way, and it’ll generally team up with others to focus a burning beam of light at you. Their eyes are not damaged by the sun, but can be damaged with enough physical force, which generally leaves permanent cracks.
You can read more about Eeror here, and keep coming back for new Halloweek Compliens all week long!

This is Antlure! While meant to be a reindeer or some other type of cervid, their face is kind of reptillian and their body is shaped almost like some sort of weird dog. While this sort of stems from my inability to draw mammalian quadrupeds, I’m also kind of fine with it. It gives the impression that this is a cervoid monster, rather than an actual cervid.
Utilizing their large, bioluminescent antlers, they attract prey in the dead of night, allowing them to quickly sink in with their sharp teeth. Their impressive upper body strength, large antlers, and sharp teeth allow them to take out much larger targets, and while usually lone hunters, occasionally they will attack in groups to take out opponents of a massive size. In fall and winter of every year, hunters may take time to hunt Antlures, as their large antlers are often prized, but they must take several precautions beforehand.

This is Jawcracker, the fifth Icy Halloweek Complien this year! So I think we can all agree that nutcrackers are at least a little uncanny, at least the usual designs we use for them, and with that idea in fresh memory, it got me thinking, what would a nutcracker Complien look like? I eventually designed something with this weird face and a vaguely slug-like foot, but that doesn’t matter very much.
What matters is what Jawcracker does! Jawcrackers are coastal Compliens, scanning the shores for whatever prey they can find. Unfortunately sluggish, they typically have to resist eating the least mobile Compliens they can find, which are usually the Compliens with the hardest shells. Fortunately for the Jawcracker, and less fortunately for their prey, they have some of the strongest jaws of any Complien, allowing them to apply intense force to crack through even the strongest shells.
You can read more about Jawcracker here, and keep coming back for new Compliens for the rest of the week!

It’s about time I design a parasitic Complien! For part 4 of this year’s Halloweek, we actually return to part 4 of last year’s Halloweek, Exhorguts! In case you didn’t know, Exhorguts is a much-feared predator in the Compliverse, being able to digest Compliens from a far range by spitting up its digestive system, and swallowing them whole. Think sort of like a starfish! But much larger, and on land.
However, one threat faced by about one in ten Exhorguts is the Paraonette, a Complien inspired by the tongue-eating louse. Since Paraonettes are resistant to Exhorguts’ toxins, they are easily able to take out their entire digestive systems, effectively leaving the Exhorguts without the ability to energize itself. Without being able to fight back, Paraonettes then produce silk to make little strings that they use to puppeteer Exhorguts around, giving them much more powerful attacks, and what to them appears to be a much more comfortable home. While Paraonettes’ soft underbellies are often a weak spot on their own, when controlling what appears to be a fearsome predator, most Compliens that would otherwise attack the Paraonette end up fleeing instead.
You can read more about Paraonette here, and keep coming back for new monsters all week long!

Meet Parasox and Nightkwantum, two Compliens that just so happen to look like really snazzy legwear! While Parasox has been around for a couple years, Nightkwantum is one of the newest members of the Compliverse family, only being drawn up today! For Parasox’s grown form, I figured it’d become a different type of clothing. Settled on a pair of pants, because it’s reasonable to stay along the lines of legwear, and also for the Fresno nightcrawler resemblance. I might change Parasox’s eyes in the future, to link them together better, though.
Since Parasox and Nightkwantum are accustomed to looking snazzy as can be, most other bipedal Compliens want to try them on, and become the coolest creature on the block as a result. What they may not be aware of, however, is the endless void that rests on top of these creatures. Try to wear this colorful clothing, and it will be guaranteed to spell your doom. Be careful when checking your wardrobe, and look out for all-consuming black holes!

Some of the Halloweek Compliens end up feeling less “traditionally scary” and more “theoretically scary.” While Blazar, here, doesn’t look much like your average ghost, ghoul, or other spooky specter, something about the concept of “dying in overwhelming heat” still feels pretty scary to me. And Halloween is all about the scary!
Blazars emanate extreme heat wherever they go, gradually frying anything that stays in their vicinity for long enough. As such, wherever they sleep, the ground remains scorched. Typically, Blazars don’t even have to hunt their prey. They just stay hidden long enough, until their heat cooks their prey to death. Usually, they don’t have to worry about eating raw meat either, since they can further roast their prey after death. Afterwards, they eat their prey through the large mouth in the middle of the six flame-like appendages on its face.
You can read more about Blazar here, and come back tomorrow for the final Halloweek Complien!

This is Biorupt, the second Halloweek Complien for 2018! It is the grown form of Biobaggie, which I posted on my old blog a few months ago. And if you couldn’t tell, it’s a lot more dangerous!
Biorupt is what happens if a Biobaggie is fed too much, or is torn open by any other means, such as, I don’t know, feeding it sharps? Remember to handle Biobaggies carefully, everybody! Since Biorupt is torn open, this means that it spills medical waste wherever it goes, which is... not great! Not great for your health, at the very least! As such, they have been mostly banished from public locations, only living in the wild on a few small islands. Since Biorupt is exceedingly rare, generally there’s enough waste to feed them all, since nobody wants to starve them. They are still living, after all.
Small side-note, when I designed this line, I was unaware that a similar creature existed in that “Dreadful Doctors” comic or whatever it’s called. Don’t worry, I’ve talked with @bogleech about it, and he’s cool with there now being two monsters in this world that happen to be inspired by bags of medical waste, so fortunately, it seems I’m free of lawsuits for the foreseeable future.
You can read more about Biorupt here, and remember to keep checking back for new Compliens all week long!

Happy Icy Halloween everybody! It’s nice that this sort of holiday is right at the end of the year, what better to end a year than with a spooktacular surprise? And what better a spooktacular surprise than a guillotine?! Are we looking at a New Year’s Resolution, or a New Year’s Revolution? Eh, eh?
For those of you who have been keeping up with the blog, you probably recognize this as the grown form of Eeror from a couple months back! Illutines exist as the head of any pack of Eerors, and whenever any member of the pack is disturbed, they’ll typically take the perpetrator to Illutine to have their head severed. You can’t hurt an Illutine again if you’re already dead. That being said, Illutines are non-aggressive, usually, and only resort to their punishment provided they are disturbed first. If one chooses not to disturb an Illutine, they’ll probably be entirely okay.
You can read more about Illutine here, and thank you for tuning in to Icy Halloweek 2018! I hope you have an excellent Icy Halloween, and an excellent New Year’s as well!

So as someone from West Virginia who loves Funny Monsters, predictably, I know a fair bit about Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster, including the most likely explanation for both being that they were likely just barn owls. Perhaps that’s a little bit of a shame, but I also then liked the idea of there being just one, really big barn owl that terrorized West Virginia for two decades straight that is probably just as impressive as any other cryptid might be.
While Whomongous is not a singular barn owl, but rather a species of massive barn-owl-like Compliens, at two and a half meters, their height is nothing to scoff at. Some of the largest aerial predators known, Whomongouses typically hunt in forests at night, using their impressive vision and quick speed to hunt small, mammalian Compliens. That being said, despite having some impressive abilities of their own, their large eyes and ambiguous silhouette lead to them, more often than not, being mistaken for rare or even undiscovered Compliens.
You can read more about Whomongous here, and come back tomorrow for the Icy Halloweek 2018 finale!
