“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible” ~Francis of Assisi . . If anyone told me 8 years ago that I would be sharing this quote with you today, at best I would have thought they were overly hopeful and at worst maybe a little crazy. But here I am, because there were people who believed in me and I started to believe them and see myself through their eyes. Every now and then I still struggle with negative feelings of self-worth, self-value, and self-confidence; but I have learned that even that is a valuable part of me and a part of why I do what I do here- Opening up my life for others to believe me when I say, “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible”- so don’t give up on yourself and soon enough you will believe in yourself and only #zeebeeyoutiful around you 💓 . . #lifelessons #lifeunplugged #supportyourfriends #ificanyoucan #holistichealing #holisticfeeling #completelife #intentionalliving #livingfully #friendsmakelifebetter #livingfaithfully #newworld #ilovemyself #ilovemylife #alternativemedicine . .

Top-Notch Cancer Treatment for Early Age Breast Cancer

Top-Notch Cancer Treatment for Early Age Breast Cancer
At Indiana University Health, providing comprehensive, top-notch cancer treatment means nurturing the patient’s mind as well as healing the body.
When Carmon Weaver Hicks was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2006, she was in a state of disbelief. “I felt like I was in a fog for a very long time,” she says. “I didn’t know anyone who had cancer. I really wasn’t familiar with the disease at all.” Hicks underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction of her left breast and took the drug tamoxifen to prevent a recurrence. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2013 and metastasized to her bones. Hicks’ oncologist at Indiana University Health’s Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, Kathy Miller, MD, told her that metastatic breast cancer could be managed—but that Hicks would require treatment for the rest of her life.
Hicks now comes to IU Health every three weeks for drug infusions, a regimen she says has been made easier thanks to the support she receives through the CompleteLife Program. Created by IU Health hematologist/oncologist Larry Cripe, MD, CompleteLife offers a variety of therapies and services designed to address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients with cancer and other serious illnesses. Patients can take part in art, music, and writing therapy; learn mind-body techniques such as yoga and meditation; receive emotional support from chaplains and consultations with psychologists and psychiatrists; and attend support groups. Everything is free and available to patients’ family members and caregivers as well, which Hicks appreciates. “Sometimes I worry more about my husband than myself,” she says. “Watching someone battle cancer is harder in some ways because there’s nothing you can do.”
Natasha Young, an art therapist and the coordinator of CompleteLife, sees the difference the program’s services make in people’s lives every day. “For outpatients like Carmon, who will need treatment for the rest of their life, therapies such as yoga and art give them something positive to look forward to when they come here,” she says. For those who are hospitalized, the staff brings the services to them, teaching guided relaxation in chemotherapy-infusion rooms and bringing an “art cart” full of supplies to a patient’s bedside, for example. “It sounds like such a simple thing, but just getting someone sitting up and painting and bringing life to their room is so important,” Young says. “It relieves stress and helps take the person’s mind off what they’re going through.”
For Hicks, these therapies are key to coping and thriving with a chronic illness. “I was determined that cancer would not take over my entire life,” she says, adding that CompleteLife’s yoga classes have been particularly beneficial. “I’m breathing better and thinking clearly, and I’m learning exercises that help my symptoms that I might never have done otherwise,” Hicks says. Her yoga therapist, Stella Snyder, says that that’s the beauty of a program like CompleteLife. “Because the services are so accessible and don’t cost anything, more people are able to benefit from them,” she explains. “Not everyone is going to seek out yoga classes and pay a studio’s prices.”
Thanks to the comprehensive care she’s received at the Simon Cancer Center, Hicks says she’s doing well. “Everyone tells me ‘You don’t look sick,’” she says. “I’ve probably never been healthier, considering I have people examining and taking care of every part of me!” She now hopes to take the information and advice she’s learned and share it with others. “Cancer is awful, but the really good thing is that it’s brought me closer to God,” Hicks says. “I see my purpose, and that’s to help people.”
