ao3 year in review
I went back and forth a bit on whether I wanted to do this or not, since I’m really not a big writer in the fandom and am generally not super involved in the other things TMA writers seem to be involved in, but since in the span of 5 months I’ve nearly doubled the amount of fics I have posted to ao3 (which had accumulated over YEARS) and I do feel very proud of the work I’ve done, I’m going to! Format taken from @athina-blaine
Top Fandom: The Magnus Archives (17 works)
Date of First Fic Posted: July 22, 2020 (Press “A” to Punch, 2.2k words)
Top Multi-Chapter Fic: Seen, Unseen, Unsung (currently 50k words!) Though this is still a WIP, it’s still the longest fic I’ve ever written, and though it’s not the first multichapter fic I’ve ever done, it’s the first one that I’ve had a proper outline for and have therefore fully committed to finishing (even if there’s sometimes long stretches between updates). I know comparitively this isn’t a lot but I got very excited when it broke 3k hits, and I’m looking forward to finishing it next year!
Top One-Shot: only the sweetest words remain (4.6k words) I scrambled to get this one done for ace week in between working on Whumptober prompts, and I’m really glad I managed to squeeze it in! I loved getting the chance to explore Jon’s aceness through a series of relationships (canon and non-canon) and I’m glad that it was well-recieved!
Fic I’m Most Proud Of: Press “A” To Punch (2.2k words) First fic after a super long writing hiatus! And it wasn’t completely horrible! I like to reread this one because my writing style has changed so much since I wrote it back in July, which is so shocking to me but not entirely unexpected given the amount of fic I’ve written and read since then. I think I’ve come to understand the characters a lot more since then as well, but I’m still very proud of the way I wrote Jon & Melanie and Jon & Daisy’s relationships.
Fic I Wish Had Gotten More Attention: neither here nor there (5.3k words) Y’all, I really liked this one. I love doing 5+1 format fics, and this was my first (and only) in the TMA fandom, and it didn’t resonate as much as I’d hoped it would (possibly because of my chronic habit of writing angsty/bittersweet endings). It was also the fic that kicked off my JonTim research relationship headcanon/fic focus, which I’ve incorporated into almost ever fic since then.
Fic That Challenged Me The Most: closing circles, shutting doors (43k words) This one was hard. I’d never done a prompt challenge before, much less a month-long, one-a-day prompt challenge, much less a promp challenge involving a fic category I’d never written for before (whump). But I really think this fic helped me grow as a writer, both in letting myself just write and not get caught up in the little editorial details and in putting out such a large word count in such a short period of time.
Favorite Quote/Passage: from your hair is winter fire, january embers (3.8k words):
There’s motion in his periphery, catching his eyes and dragging them toward the corner of the cottage near the door where Martin has set a twin pair of backpacks and is currently rifling through one with his back to Jon. Jon can see the tension in Martin’s shoulders, hinting at the nervous set to his eyes that’ll probably be covered with a reassuring smile for Jon’s sake when he—
Martin turns, and Jon blinks at the deep concern that’s etched in the lines of Martin’s face, at the nervousness he wears plainly and openly. It occurs to Jon, then, that he’d been expecting it all to slip away. The vulnerability they’d cultivated in rays of sunshine dripping through the cabin windows like warm lemon drops, in the heat of the fireplace as the chill of the highlands crept in through the paper-thin cottage slats, in the drowsy hours of the early morning when Jon studied the soft curves of Martin’s face resting inches from his and felt love and affection curling so intensely within his chest that he thought he might choke on it. It didn’t feel fragile, that happiness, so much as too gentle for the darkness that now seeped in through the corners and turned every joyful memory against them.
Jon hadn’t thought it would survive. So when Martin says, with that same care and kindness but also with an unsteadiness to his voice that betrays his nerves, “About ready, then?” Jon feels tears prickle at the corners of his eyes.
Total Words Posted: 151,230! (Oh, wow, that’s a lot!)
Thanks so much to my beta, @doubt-thou-the-stars, and to everyone who’s commented, left kudos, and reblogged my writing! It felt really nice to be writing again after a 2-year dry spell (and a 5-year spell since doing the level of writing I’m doing now) and I can’t thank everyone who’s seeing this enough for the support!
