hmm tumblr “for you” recommended me some screencaps of a bunch of people in the tlt subreddit ripping on a transfem person for asking in a very non aggressive way about why there’s not much explicit gender commentary in tlt… and chewing them out because “pyrrha exists” and “paul exists”… that’s a… that’s a no from me sorry
#biggest failure (maybe that’s a strong word?) or biggest wish it were better of this series is its approach to gender for me#compare to ann leckie. idk#no author is obligated to put gender commentary into their work and i don’t think muir was obligated#but#it’s ten THOUSAND years in the future and the PERSONIFICATION OF EARTH still sorts people into male and female one she can figure it out#‘once she can figure it out’ i mean per the narrative everyone in nona is ONLY a they until nona can distinguish if they’re a he or a she#and then they’re that thereafter#and not 1 single nonbinary person exists. it’s really bleak and i don’t blame people for commenting on it#full respect to anyone who genuinely feels represented by 2+ people in 1 body in a sci fi setting being called ‘they’#but can’t relate#self#negativity /#i guess. i don’t sit up at night and cry about it or anything#silas and harrow are nb to me so idgaf

“Knightley is at pains to emphasise that she appreciates her comparative good fortune. "When you’re in a scenario like this, and you know there’s nothing you can do but stay at home, you realise the utter frivolousness of your existence – and the utter awe for nurses. How could you give them only a one per cent pay rise?" she fires up. "That’s a feminist issue!" Still, like everyone, she has experienced "an emotional rollercoaster" over the past few months.”
“Now, though, she is deep in research for a new project based on the bestselling sci-fi novel Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, which is set to start shooting later in the year, pandemic permitting. "It’s about power. The questions within my character are, 'What is the purpose of conquest? What are the motivations to rule?' So I’m reading lots of books about dictators, and fantasising about intergalactic domination while I’m doing the washing-up and changing the baby’s nappy..." She is also deep into the audiobooks of Manda Scott’s Boudica series, which she has found particularly consoling in the wake of the death of Sarah Everard and the grim revelations of misogyny and sexual assault in schools revealed on the Everyone’s Invited forum. "Something very pagan and powerfully female feels nice to listen to right now," she says.”
IDK how the fuck they’re planning on adapting Ancillary Justice, such a concept-heavy book, and I desperately hope they’ve put some serious thought into the Gender Thing it’s got going on. I’m quite wary of this, but, as always, I adore Keira Knightley. TW for abuse and harassment in the article, near the end.
