I met a homeless man and his BFF, Star, a pit bull mix, to say I was blown away with his "out of the box thinking", would be an understatement. . You see, he used a bandana, cut it into small pieces, and used garage bag ties to secure the pieces for her paws. . I looked down at Star and noticed her paws. . I knelt down on the ground to Star's level, waited for her to accept me petting her, when she did, I was able to check the ties. . They were not too tight that would inhibit blood flow. I looked up at him and said, "this is such a great idea to use a bandana" . He simply replied in the most humble answer, "I do not like to walk on the hot pavement, I am not going to have her do that. I can't afford the stuff in pet stores so I used a bandana I had." . Be still my heart! Brilliant, kind, compassionate, thoughtful and so much more in two sentence. . I think, no, I know, I just gained an incredible learning experience from him and Star. . You know what keeps running through my head? How goddamn strong Preston Garvey is. Like, no, I need to talk about this for a bit.

I know the fandom likes to reduce him to settlement jokes or a naive adorable angel man, too good for this world, too pure

And he really is an angel of a man, don’t get me wrong. But you know how much resilience, how much determination it takes to keep up your faith in humanity in the commonwealth?

Preston likely grew up in like most wastelanders, spending their days scraping together just enough to survive another day. Surrounded by people who have been living in squalor for so long that they have nothing but cynicism left. Where compassion, charity, mercy is scoffed at. Where nobody values anyone else if they can’t get some advantage for themselves out of it.

Preston witnessed the one force of good he knows, the Minutemen, get virtually crushed by the Gunners. Quincy pretty much destroyed, and, one by one, losing the people under his care, to raiders, to ghouls, to the wasteland. People who trusted him, people he desperately wanted to protect, dead, and he blames himself for it too.

How many people would have kept going with only four others left? How easy would it have been to just ditch them? To lose your belief that the world out there is worth fighting for, if all it ever gave you for your efforts was derision and hostility?

Preston lost everything he had and suffered from severe survivor’s guilt and suicidal depression because of it.

And he still kept going.

After all the shit the world threw at him, he still refused to give up his belief that there had to be something out there that was worth preserving. That, even if they couldn’t see it for themselves, the people of the wasteland had something good in them that deserved the chance at a life beyond mere survival.

I love the cute, goody-two-shoes side of him a lot. But I think it’s absolutely worth remembering that his character is deeper than that, and that his insistence on companssion is a powerful statement in a world where the majority live by a principle of kill or be killed.

Anyway I love Preston and will defend him forever
