secret, mistake and midnight forâŚermâŚlets seeâŚskims thruâŚyesâŚall of them đ
haii oomfiee thank you for feeding into my craziness like usual ehehe
secret: What's one secret your OC never wants anyone to know about them?
sloth; the fact that she has her friends soul trapped in the doll. no one can know the true meaning of the doll. thats why she carries it around. shes afraid someone will hear the doll one day. hear her friend talking back to them so she has to make sure no one is alone with her. theyre together forever even if its not what she wants.
envy; :/ her shrine. her shrine is really fucked up in a sense of the fact shes been following this idol around as a "fan" taking pictures when in reality she was capturing different angles so she can get a better image of what her face looks like so she could replicate it. its kinda insane. she hates herself for it. but she thinks its what needed to be done.
pride; if anyone finds out he sometimes cries himself to sleep. they might unironically go missing. no one will ever know that.
greed; he's a mommas boy. he misses his mother from the bottom of his heart but he cant get her involved in his lifestyle. he knows that if anyone finds out who she is. they can link back everything to him. plus his mom wouldnt be proud of him. shes still convinced her precious baby is a lawyer whos gonna get married one day.
mistake: What's the worst mistake your OC ever made? What led to them making it? Have they been able to fix it? How have they moved on?
sloth; girl falling asleep one the day she promised to show up to the hospital to visit her friend. she PROMISED IT WEEKS IN ADVANCE after putting it off for so long just because she didnt want to see the state her friend was in. it haunts her every night because the reason she took a nap was because she was up all night watching TV. no she cant fix it, its too late to fix it, and HELLL NOOO SHES NEVER MOVED ON!!
envy; changing her face/her deal with the devil. she HATES that she did that. she HATES looking in the mirror when that woman exists and she has that life that envy can never have still until SHES GONE. she cant fix it but she "can" the second she can kill her... it will be over and she can take that life and live it instead of the horrible excuse of a life she has now...
pride; lemme scratch my ass. he doesnt THINK anything he does is a mistake. its intentional. he can NEVER do anything wrong according to him. but if i had to say off the top of my head. taking over the company when he has no expertise. hes lowkey getting told what to do to properly run it by the devil while he takes the full credit. he doesnt realize the hell hes in when it all comes crashing down. but everyone just thinks hes so smart so he doesn't' care. đ
greed; HIS WIFE. he could have had a WIFE but he gambled that away. if anything he would have had MORE money to gamble if he wasnt such a greedy bastard and lied to her and exploited the money she was giving him. if he ran into the negatives, she'd bail him out. if he didnt lie to her and she didnt find out how much of a sleazy dirt bag he was because of it. he would have still been a lawyer lol. he only fixed it by giving up on the law and doing what would make him cash fast. he thought about having her killed before but he has no way to do it scott-free.
midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping?
sloth; buddy. what doesnt keep her up at night? replaying the funeral, replaying showing up late at the hospital to see her dead friend. everything keeps her up. her guilt, the pain, the regret, even her deal. the doll is her only "peace" and even that torments her so much. she talk to her friend then. apologizing for not showing up. apologizing for locking her in the doll just so she can say sorry until her friend forgives her. she knows she cant sleep because of her own mistakes. but she cant stop herself from blaming her friends death on herself.
envy + pride; theyre part of "i drank too much coffee so fuck now im up all night" by themselves, they just do whatever they focus on. envy ends up doing more search on her idol... or sometimes she looks up the latest fashion to maybe one day find an outfit that will make everyone find her super hot and attractive. pride likes to look at pictures of cats and watch dog videos. TOGETHER oh my god. its so annoying. its just pride annoying envy all night like "hey you up ;)" and she responds with a "no" and the two of them end up "bickering" because pride wont leave her alone and envy is trying to do work since he OBVIOUS has nothing for for him!!
greed; answered!

danny phantom season 2, ep 12-16 thoughts! these episodes, in comparison to the first 10 or so, felt way more laid back and low-stakes, which I appreciate sometimes. I didn't appreciate how lazy jack's halfa design was in masters of time, it made me so annoyed I redesigned it. đđť u_u
see prev episode thoughts in this tag <3
-'picking a fight with me and my upgraded form!' 'you upgraded to a mullet?' DANNNNY. YOU CANT SAY THAT TO TECHNUS. YOUVE HAD A MULLET TWICE NOW ('fun' split danny, and evil future danny BOTH HAD THEM). I HAVE THE RECEIPTS.
-danny seeing technus hurting valerie and yelling I AM GOING TO BREAK YOU IN HALF. SAMEEEE <3
-axion labs is now a part of vladco. FUCK YOU VLAD. hes not even really IN this episode, but just thought I'd throw out a nice fuck you anyway.
-'capable of blasting a single person into space in (2) minutes!' tucker. that would kill someone. i mean yeah they might get to space, but theres NO WAY THEY WOULDNT CATCH FIRE, OR THEIR ORGANS WOULDNT LIQUIFY BECAUSE OF THE STRAIN. THEY'D PROBABLY PASS OUT BEFORE THEN, BUT. ...no, okay, I get why vlad bought this company. this is RIGHT up his alley.
-danny KNOWS VAL DIDNT DO THIS, THAT SOMEONE STOLE THE SUIT. AND SPENDING ALL NIGHT CHATTING WITH HER. <3 and val is a 9TH DEGREE BLACKBELT?? danny's mom is, too!! omg and she hunts ghosts, his parents would love her. and her fav fruit is kumquat bc its a funny word. im so with danny val is amazing. I love her and I Do Not Want To Hear It From Sam.
-I knew danny wanted to be an astronaut, but the bowling tidbit is like. yes give me more useless info abt these characters, I love tiny details that make them feel more human, and im glad hes got hobbies aside from ghost stuff, we dont really see a lot of that!!! (I mean, we knew 'fun' danny from when he split himself in half liked bowling, so obv it makes sense he LIKES it, but hes very GOOD at it. so proud of him, bowling king) val calling him neil armstrong and them teasing each other. LOVE THAT.
-technus you are my favorite grandpa for setting this up. SAM WHY ARE YOU BEING SO CREEPY BE HAPPY FOR YOUR FRIEND!!! STOP SPYING ON THEM!!! who actually cares if technus did 'set them up' together, theyre having fun and enjoy each others company!!! 'you think the universe wants you two to be together?' 'i dunno, but maybe /I/ do!' EXACTLY DANNY!!! SOO TRUE.
-and valerie being happy sam said she wants to try and be happy for them and make room at the lunch table for them. and hugging sam over it. VAL NEEDS MORE FRIENDS.
-VAL GOING AFTER TECHNUS IN HER SUIT WITH (1) MILK, AND (1) TREE BRANCH AND KEYS!!!. I LOVE YOUUUU BEST GIRL. her new suit kicks ass
-dannys like 'HEY IM AN ASTRONAUT :D' AW. ...HES IN SPACE... the fact he's actually intending to give her the ring. with SAMS NAME ON IT?? IM CRINGING DANNY NO. YOU CANT DO THAT...thank god he didnt. thank god valerie cut it off and said they can just stay friends for now. tbh, they both have a lot on their plates!! they obv both still like each other...it can be a future thing!! when she knows about phantom! youre 14 theres no need to rush. I just want her to have friends and be happy :(
-...danny struggles to do (1) pull up. SAME. but all the ghost fighting in phantom form REALLY doesnt carry over at ALL? that sucks
-sam being as fit as she is, is not just a goth. shes a goth jock.
-honey I Shrank Our Kid, One of his Enemies, and his Bully: the episode
-dash's crush on phantom is So Obvious. fitness buddies :) watching them interact always makes me laugh. also, phantom, with PANTS. 'how many costume changes you gonna go through, what is this, vegas??' DASSH DJKSFHASKDF
-MADDIE GOING AFTER THE MOUSE WITH A BROOM, WHAT THE FUCK. AAAH. JUST BUY SOME KIND OF MOUSE TRAP.
-danny likes lime and vinegar chips. which sound very good.
-'our boy finally has the physical prowess of a 60 year old president!' ...poor danny LMAO
-'what's wrong with beauty pageants' oh tucker you sweet naĂŻve child. what ISNT wrong with them. who approved this for a high school?? (I mean, yes. unfortunately child pageants exist, but...) also danny and tucker once again treating the pretty girls like objects. I need to meet the grown man who wrote this, I just want to talk...
-prince aragon's dragon form reminds me of maleficent (color scheme wise) which is always a bonus. considering the episode is called beauty marked, I feel like the sleeping beauty references are deliberate
-sam with the fake fangs. once again her accessories never miss. hate the 'not like other girls, girls who get sucked into this kind of thing are all shallow and all want to be carbon copies' bs tho.
-sam trying to be the Worst Bride, being rude as shit. DORA IS GOING TO GET KILLED. DID YOU MISS THE PART WHERE SHE SAID THE PRINCE WILL HAVE HER HEAD IF YOU ARENT THE IDEAL BRIDE. YOU /KNOW/ DANNY WILL COME SAVE YOU. JUST ACT CHILL UNTIL THEN. even if you were doing fine to get him to take off the crown, consider maybe not letting his poor sister get punished also?? sure, she could also take off the crown and has dragon powers, but did you know that for sure?? dora didnt even really realize it until you guys talked!! (or at least, she was scared to stand up to him. you had no guarantee she would...) but. good for dora. ANOTHER friendly ghost to add to the List :)
-tucker is so under appreciated in his time. if he was doing a tech-based campaign today he'd have a better shot. people in 2004 had NO IDEA how much tech would be a part of our day-to-day lives...altho. tbh if you're going to be running for student council president, maybe you should..focus on things to actually improve the school? since he's going for a tech angle, he could say like, he would be running fundraisers for the schools computers to be upgraded, etc? we've already SEEN he can be good at money-making entrepreneur type stuff!!
-oh my god wait. this episode is JUST YUGIOH?????! A REBORN PHAROH USING A TEENAGER AS A VESSEL?? YESSSSSS
-tucker using his new minion to feed him grapes and carry him. AND LOCUSTS ONTO THE BULLIES. I love how when he's possessed, he gains winged eyeliner.
-this episode is giving me big 'plankton makes everyone in bikini bottom his slaves and build monuments of him from the spongebob movie' vibes. and the pharaoh has a traitor who works for him? VERY big yugioh vibes. aknadin confirmed
-I like that danny is still completely exhausted after using ghostly wail. (still patiently waiting on him to get duplication)
-LOVE the fenton's 80s outfits. I get hes 14 and embarrassed by everything they do because theyre his parents, but. cmon, this is one objectively cool thing theyve done. love 80s fashion.
-...was vlad just standing on that streetlight waiting for danny to come out? how'd he know they'd be coming out the back? how long has he been up there???
-oh, wait, his ecto-acne has flareups? that SUCKS. danny was...well I dont want to say he was LUCKY HE HALF-DIED, but he was lucky his was pretty instant (I'm assuming that had to do with the power/scale of the portals being different?) I remember in the ep we met him, vlad made a point of saying he was stuck in a hospital for a long time, so. that really actually sucks and I feel bad. not that it excuses anything he's done...but like. it does suck.
-vlad being so sure danny wouldnt help him he made it somehow contagious to his friends to make sure he'd get help? danny is a nice boy, he wouldve helped if it was anyone else. the only reason he wouldn't have is because of the shit vlad did to him, on purpose. vlad 100% dug his own grave by being the biggest asshole, so it is very hard to feel bad for him.
-clockwork is back!!! and making danny learn lessons The Hard Way. Uhhh, okay. I kind of get Dannyâs logic, that time traveling this far back would prevent vlad from becoming a halfa also, ergo no arch nemesis or ectoacne to worry about. But the fact that was basically the first solution Danny came up with to solve this problem is actually so funny. Itâs so extreme
-APPRICIATION FOR THESE 80S LESBIAN BG CHARACTERS.
-vlad telling maddie in the lab (in the 80s) he has something he's wanted to tell her 'for a long time'...how long have they known each other? I assumed they met in college, since jack always calls vlad his college buddy/roommate, so jack and vlad for sure met in college, but did vlad know maddie longer? thats surprising if so. Tho we donât know what year of college theyâre in so they could mean they met as freshmen and a few years have pastâŚspeaking of maddie shes crushing the 80s look.
-vlad blames jack, but. maybe dont stick your face 2 inches from the portal??! THIS FEELS LIKE LAB SAFETY BASICS. IF SOMETHING HAS POTENTIAL TO BE DANGEROUS, DONT GET NEAR IT. WITH YOUR FACE UNPROTECTED IN ANY WAY. (altho jack didnt really give a Big Warning besides screaming BONZAI. so. also that, but cmon.) also, they need gloves, goggles, and to pull all of their hair back tbh. but fuck lab safety, I guess!
-cryyyyinnng at how lazy they were with jack's ghost form design, its just plasmius' design on jack!!! you couldve given him his own design!!
-there. I did that in about 10 minutes and its somehow less lazy than what made it into the show. embarrassing! better yet, I think the episode would've been better if maddie would've gotten the ectoacne. or maybe its just me, wanting to see her design! anyway. I'm sure people have already done redesigns of them both as halfas. I have to go look after I finish this watch through. Also mildly frustrated jacks resentment and bitterness is basically also a copy paste of vlads backstory. Theyâre different characters, I really donât think jack would stew in bitterness and jealousy the same way vlad would!! I also donât think heâd give up after one time of trying to hunt ghosts and getting laughed at. Our canon timeline says differentâŚI dunno, I get it was for laughs, but Iâm annoyed because the POTENTIAL this plot hasâŚ
-did vlad really wear a stupid cheese hat to his wedding. ok actually that kinda rules. and the cheese door knocker. the dairy-only buffet table. vlad still got rich, just on being the New Dairy King. (Assuming that means he owns a lot of dairy businesses?) ok! this actually is great. hope maddie isn't lactose intolerant!
-'no matter how hard I tried, I could never get rid of my ghost half, the half I knew Maddie could never accept' ohh, ouch, what a horrible thing to say to her HALF GHOST SON. 'YOUR MOM WILL NEVER ACCEPT YOU' BASICALLY.
-maddie strapping danny to the table with a lazer pointed at him in a secret lab she keeps from vlad that she makes a point of saying is sound proof so he can scream all he wants...CHRIST. DANNYS POOR PYSCHE.
-also, not to feel bad for alternate vlad (because, he did lie to maddie saying jack blames her and never wants to see her again...) but. being married to a woman 20+ years and she immediately goes back to jack? if she didnt love vlad and feels like she had to hide shit from him, and says she wasted her best years with him, WHY MARRY HIM. it feels like leading him on!!! cannot believe im feeling bad for vlad, but. this alternate timeline vlad is significantly Less Horrible than Our Vlad. did she not think she'd get funding for her ghost stuff? (which, fair assumption since they're considered 'ghost fanatics/nuts in canon...but...) why did she think jack or vlad would be her ONLY OPTIONS? be like your sister. be single. Actually, this au couldâve been really interesting if after the accident, vlad lied to her and said jack never wanted to see her again, but she stays single. Imagine how much that would bug vlad⌠like, in her mind, it was never a competition it was jack or no one type situationâŚ
-danny being like 'leave him ALONE' this jack is a HOMEWRECKER, DANNY. let them go to court and settle this at the least. ...or just throw vlad into the portal. (100% human, defenseless vlad) CHRIST, MADDIE THATS BRUTAL. THATS MURDER.
-danny seeing his mom immediately accepting him and his dad being half ghosts in this universe, if I was him this would be a great sign that his universe's maddie would also.
-*maddie voice* "clockwork will help!" *2 seconds later, with clockwork* "I will Not Help." TOUGH LOVE KING. YES LET DANNY SEE THE SODA HIMSELF AND DEVOLP BETTER OBSERVATION SKILLS.
-when clockwork ""reset time to the way it was"" just before danny "meddled"" ...did he really erase a whole alternate timeline? ...damn. because maddie and danny both called it an alternate timeline by name, it splitting when the college incident went different, so it wouldnt have really mattered if he reset it, right. like because danny's timeline is on a different stream? why didnt clockwork just. show danny a replay and not Reset That Timeline. wh...I wonder how many people that Erased From Existence. Anyway! once again stating clockwork is casually terrifying!

I cant decide if I think what happened this episode makes me mad at tae joo.Â
me @ me...and ppl who may read what i write...lmao: hear me out. i am a black anarchist cis woman so like...not everyone is going to care or think about stuff like this. i realize it may not be the total norm yet (but hey black radicals burned down a fucking police station yesterday which is some real cool history so who is to say that iâm not.) with or without the norms, i share to get a grip of my own thoughts that ADHD absolutely wonât let me keep. and see what people have to say! maybe theyâll engage. otherwise,,,,,,,it doesnt matter i jsut love thinking it through. cos i am CONFUSED!!!Â
(btw, i insult rich ppl through this whole thing and i dont give a fuck. i repeat a lot of things too o well.)
the start of the ep has these words from tae joo:
i have a young friend. a shadow like being who doesnât go away even at one o clock. that shadow grew a self. i have to do him the favor...
part of his like and attraction to guk is because of that existing power imbalance. i, personally, think that is impossible to deny given that we see it. a girl coming over to their house and he kisses her. he had to know that guk would see, or would be looking, whatever.
you have tae joo being surprised at interest in guk. not because guk isnât attractive or whatever, but because heâs used to the one being noticed. he may not be as broad and tall (thereâs not a huge difference but guk obviously stands out more visually, while tae joo stands out cos heâs him i guess lol.)
i think there may be an element of this cat and mouse game that he likes, but guk takes it a lot more seriously. as he should because...itâs his job. we donât know at what point they are so anything that happened previously but they very clearly like each other.Â
i was gonna say it didnât even have to be romanticâyet. just that feeling of i donât need anyone else to take you. iâm curious about why tae joo likes pil hyun but maybe it has something to do with wanting a friend that isnât necessarily one borne out of necessity. but pil hyunâs dad does work at tae jooâs fatherâs dumb company or whatever. heâs on the board? idk i forgot
but maybe neither of them really care and pil hyun is just a friend instead of someone you have deep admiration and romantic or strange love for.Â
but then thereâs a lot of cruelly selfish stuff that shows why this imbalance and their two different backgrounds hinders them. tae joo doesnât want to lose this shadow anyway but guk is always there. where heâs supposed to be.
when tae joo said, âisnât it boring just the two of us?â itâs just such a dumb fucking question to ask. he was either just being verbally careless or did it on purpose. it can be both, but i donât think it was supposed to be. for every one side of a you need to see him as a person not a workerr also encourage him to fuckng quit and live your lives together outside of your stupid rich father coin thereâs a he obviously wants and needs him as much if not more.Â
the if not more part comes to mean (to me) dependency formed UPON gukâs job. were they not to be in this circumstance, how would their paths cross?Â
honestly the show poses a lot of class dilemma for something so short. now is the time to do and write interesting things and question capitalism anyways. tae joo canât have everything handed to him. well he can have a lot, because heâs privileged to be where he is, but love isnât one of those things. guk is not obligated to love him fiercely if tae joo canât truly relinquish his hold.
the last scene pissed me off a lot at first and thinking about it it still does. like you used the master-servant relationship comment and exploited it because you didnât like it but itâs the truth. what is the point of guk sitting through your bullshit but when you intentionally go seek him out you can insert yourself.
hye mi saying, âhey weâre talking can u wait yr turnâ like YEA. theyâre talking, you came in and had a fit, and only someone who has a life like you do would do something like that. was guk making noise while you were being tutored?Â
i also honestly would just quit if i were guk. not every1 is gonna be an annoying anarchist like me or whatever but thatâs pretty much the only way this could sustain itself. that and tae joo respecting guk as a person not just a person he loves in his orbit. the world revolves around us as individuals. meaning we think about ourselves in relation to everyone else because we live in this body. so guk is allowed to center himself in his own life.
this could all be avoided if it crossed tae jooâs mind that guk is allowed space to feel whatever his emotions without being dictated. where it isnât just sparring that he can say whatever the fuck.Â
so remember the opening. well, hereâs the last lines of thought tae joo had in the car: i have a bodyguard a shadow like being that shouldnât go away even at one o clock. the shadow isnât supposed to have a self.Â
he called the shadow his friend. a shadow has no self so when it finds autonomy â as he is finding himself (guk), guk walks ahead of taejoo, faceless with the camera focused on the shadow itselfâwe finally start to see him as the shadow shows its human form. itâs never been a shadow, guk has always been a person, his own person, itâs just that and this is literally....he is owned by his job. imagine realizing you have the same tendency as your own dad to feel that way (btw this is also with him (guk) getting slapped by his dad and no......nothing)
in the car we see that selfishness that wasnât buried but he never thought about. guk shouldnât leave, he should always be behind him, a shadow, he isnât supposed to dictate his own life, his life must revolve around me. because heâs transient, again. workers are disposable, a dime a dozen, you happen to love this dime but it doesnât mean you have been able to fight for it or understand it.
tae joo is rich (i donât know if itâs new or old money and the distinction would matter a little but iâm pretty sure theyve been together for a long while? bitch idk) the boy he loves is employed by his father. his father is a CEO, a boss and truly the worst kind (FIRE! YOUR! BOSS!) tae joo has been told his whole life that he deserves. why fight capitalism and not understand his own richness? itâs beneficial to him and it gave him guk, right?Â
and you see how allllllllllll of that, the messaging, the receiving, how you get stuck under the influence as a younger person to be stuck under the influence as a complicit adult to the messages of the ruling class. the ruling class you are a part of whether you like it or not, the one that calls labor your own, the one that rips power from other people. you didnât choose who you were born from and to, but you get to choose what you do now.Â
guk was never a shadow, you just didnât see him because, well, heâs your best friend, and your bodyguard, working and being a literal punching bag for your mistakes (AND THATâS CAPITALISM BABY, THEY RLY TOLD US THAT THEREââfor your mistakes, iâll beat him and then send you off to englandâ like gorl...)
(i also want to mention i whole heartedly believe that the rich resent the poor, the ruling class punish the working class, etc but thatâs like irrelevant to here mostly...by irrelevant i mean i shouldnt go any fucking deeper than i have with goddamn dumb analysis. but itâs fun kinda)Â
anyway basically tae joo like made so many mistakes that show just how fucking clueless you can be when you have immense privilege. coupled with guk working for him, he doesnât realize that guk doesnât live to work. has his own thoughts and he has feelings man. when guk said âstopâ in e3 i was rly happy tbh. yea, they may like each other but doing shit like that isnât fair to him if youâre gonna go around and be really flighty about everything while he depends on (well maybe not depend must cater to) you almost completely by DEFAULT of u being rich lmao
this is just a look and critique into one side of tae joo. i donât dislike him but i question why people both in the show and people discussing feeling bad for tae jooâs circumstance instead of asking why guk  has to do any of this.....? how does guk fucking feel about this? where are gukâs feelings factored in. like weâre all saying âwe pay you so that should be enough.â fuck no. guk do what you want.
if the show was about like....people in love not meeting at the right time in their lives i wouldnt be too upset either. as long as we know their love was deep and romantic itâs okay to see a parting. of course i would prefer not to see that and just want tae joo and guk to grow up to become nice anarchist citizens. guk is an artist and tae joo writes books about his daddy issues or sth like that
#a thot#an unecessary bl thot#ill call these types of posts that#*unnecessary#where your eyes linger#tae joo x gang gook#tae joo#kang guk

I literally love your batfam writing so much, can I request something? Can batsis (biological daughter of Bruce) be adapted after her mum dies and she's obsessed with makeup and loves it so all the boys think she's shallow and conceited? But she's not? Thank you so much
Makeup
Tim flops on the couch beside his eldest brother, âDid yousee her room? Sheâs got a one of those makeup mirror things. The one with thelights in the mirror and all the drawers. When I walked by, she was filling thewhole thing up with makeupâ
âAre you serious? Who needs that much makeup?â
âI donât think Steph, Cass, and Babs have that much makeupcombined. I mean I know her mom was a model and all, but she must be stupid shallowand obsessed with her looksâ
Thereâs a soft creak as the door open and both boys glanceup to see the newest member of the Wayne household standing awkwardly in thedoorway. âHi, Alfred said that you two were in here ⌠he said that you guys wouldnâtmind giving me a bit of a tour. I only know where my room and the kitchen is âŚâ
Dick lets out a put-upon sigh and heaves himself off thecouch, âYeah, come on, Iâll show you around.â
Y/N glances up at him when theyâre passing one of the hugebay windows, âYou know, you have beautiful cheekbones, theyâd be perfect be forsome highlight. And Tim has some beautiful eyelashes, I have to use falsies ormascara to that kind of length. You know I have -â
âNot everyone needs makeup to feel good about themselves,Y/Nâ
She freezes for a few seconds before catching up to him, âIknow. I donât use makeup because I donât feel good about myself. I use it becauseit makes me confident, itâs like a mask that helps me take on the world. Ienjoy makeup, I donât need it, Dick.â Her eyes lock with his, âThis familyshould know all about mask, right?â
Dick almost chokes out a disbelieving laugh, thatâs definitelysomething heâll need to bring up to Bruce but for now heâll ignore it. âSo, youhave all that different makeup, and spend all that money just because you likeit?â
âI actually get a lot of my makeup for free. I have a YouTubechannel where I teach people how to put on makeup, so different makeupcompanies will sometimes send me their new pallets or supplies for me to testout and review. Mom taught me to be confident in who I am, to love myself andothers based on who they are as a person. I try to help my followers becomeconfident in themselves while Iâm teaching them how to do makeupâ The older manjust continues to stare at her, âMaybe you shouldnât judge people on their outwardappearance and try to get to know them firstâ
Y/N quickly walks the rest of the way down the hall andstraight into her room while Dick slowly makes his way back toward the livingroom where Tim is still sitting. âSo how was it? Was she completely airheaded,or could she actually hold a conversation?â
âShe actually seems pretty smart, like she had a reason forhaving so much makeup. I guess she uses it all for her YouTube channel, and tohelp other people gain confidence in themselvesâ
Tim quickly sits up, âDo you know what her YouTube name is?I want to look her upâ
âI donât know, just search her name, itâll be her momâs lastnameâ
Tim types for a minute, âI found her ⌠holy shit, she hasover 8 million followersâ
âYouâre kidding me. She was telling the truth? Play one ofher videosâ
The two boys play a random video from two months ago. Y/Ntalks about how it doesnât matter how much makeup someone layers on their faceif theyâre ugly on the inside itâll show. She talks about just being confidentin everything you do and in believing in yourself. The boys end up watchingvideo after video. Watching as she does casual day makeup, or night out makeup. How sometimes her mom or friends will appear in the videos and sheâll do theirmakeup as well as her own and the guest will share their own words of wisdom. The last video the two end up watching is the most recent one Y/N had posted, dated for only a few days after her mother had passed away. It isnât a makeupvideo at all, it talks about loss and figuring out how live life after losingsomeone so important. Y/N talks about Bruce, how her father who sheâs never metintends to take her in and adopt her. Finally, it wraps up by saying that shedoesnât know when sheâll be able to post again, or even if sheâll be able to answeranyone messages.
âDid we completely misjudge her and act like total assholesto a girl who just lost her only parent up until recently? Weâve both lost ourparents and we were total assholes to her just because we assumed she wasshallow and conceited, when really she just likes makeup and uses it to expressherselfâ
Dick groans, letting his head fall into his hands, âHow dowe make this up to her?â
âMaybe we should follow her advice and actually get to knowher. I think ⌠I think we should treat her like a member of the family insteadof like an outsider. We need to talk to Jason and Damian, you know theyâll cometo the same conclusion we did and yeah, Damianâs gotten a little better overthe years, but he still doesnât have much a filter.â
âYouâre right. I have a great idea. We should have a siblingmovie night, then we call all get to know her at the same time and she can getto know us. She wonât feel so alone here afterwardsâ
âPerfect! Just us tonight, and maybe next week we can getall the girls over here too?â Dick quickly nods his agreement, âIâm going totell Alfred and see if he can whip up some snacks for us. Can you call Jasonand get Damian?â
âYeah, I got them. I really hope this works. We might havejust ruined our relationship with Y/N because we judged her over her makeup andnot her personality. We should know better, god weâre so stupidâ Dick lets outa soft sigh and pulls out his phone, âLetâs just hope she can forgive usâ
A voice clears behind them. Both vigilantes whip around, their eyes wide, having not even heard the door open, âYou know, Iâd forgiveyou a lot quicker if youâd apologize, thatâs typically how these things worksâ
âY/N, you scared the crap out of me!â Dick lets out a shakybreath, âIâm sorry ⌠Weâre sorry for judging you without getting to know you.Weâve known a lot of models and just kinda assumed that you were like all of them.I didnât mean to judge you, or insult youâ
âI understand. Iâm a stranger coming into your guys house. You donât know me, you guys didnât even know I existed until recently, so ofcourse youâd assume things about me. That doesnât make it right though, howeverIâm going to forgive you this time. I want to get to know my new brothers, soletâs put this behind us, okay?â
Tim grins, âThank you. So we were gonna have a movie nighttonight, the four of us guys and you if you want. A way for all of us to get toknow you and for you to get to know us ⌠if you wantâ
Y/N grins, âIâd love to, that sounds like fun ⌠but we NEEDto have some kettle corn for the movie and some cookiesâ
Both guys snort, âI thought you were all into the healthy lifestyleand being the best you can be? Thatâs what your videos saidâ
âThatâs what some of them said, but then I also say that itâsokay to indulge as long as you do it in moderation. So, Iâll be going to the gymtomorrow, but tonight we can watch movies and eat what we wantâ
âSounds like a plan, Iâll call Jay and go talk to Damianâ
âIâll go ask Alfred if he can make cookies, you havenât hadthe chance to try Alfieâs cookies yet, Y/N. Theyâre amazing!â

you know. i have realized that i would be so so easy to manipulate like i really just absorb information and let it alter me so easily i should really work on that. like today me and my dad got into it about politics and most of the time i just say i agree and we can keep some relative peace but this time i finally snapped and so he spent the next hour trying to convince me that welfare shouldnt exist because why is it fair for someone who doesnt work for their money to get his money that he works for and also why its bullshit that poc have special college scholarships to help them pay for school and how its not fair they can go to college for free bc of their skin color and overall it was just an entire wreck and we were stuck in a car so i couldnt escape and anyway it got me thinking about people and progressions and also about dark the show. how jonas thinks hes doing the right thing and hes trying to undo the time knot to fix everything but really hes just making everything happen as it always has until he learns the hardh truth that makes him become Adam, the person he hates most. and this is related bc i feel like conservative people are people who have lost their hope in humanity like they dont believe the majority of people are good at their core. and i do.
and today i realized like yeah. people are greedy. if minimum wage goes up rich people will always lay their workers off to make up for the lost profit. like jeff bezos could end a massive amount of struggling by giving away a minuscule fraction of his wealth. but he wonât. ever. greed and power dont work like that. people dont want to give that up. so if they lose money they will do whatever it takes to make up that lost money, without regard for anyone. and yeah, people will always be lazy. some people will just have kids so they can get more government money. as long as money is a thing there will always be greed as long as power is a thing there will always be a desire for it. in a perfect world people who have accrued wealth would use it to help the poor. in a perfect world politicians wouldnt have their fingers in fourteen different multi-billion dollar companies that are destroying the environment.
iâm just feeling very apathetic. whatâs the point boris. were all just pigs rolling around in our own shit and infested with maggots that are eating us alive until one day farmer john puts a bullet in our head or a knife across our throats. the planet is just going to get hotter and hotter and people will get richer and richer and poorer and poorer and things will get harder and harder and if we raise minimum wage to help people at the bottom out the people at the top are going to fuck over people in the middle and inflation will rise and people will get laid off because rich people are greedy and they always will be they will never do what is right if its not for their own benefit and isnt that sad? isnt that just too fucking sad? but we cant change it. and thats kind of my point. are we just blind to the darker more animalistic side of human nature. we firsr and foremost look out for ourselves and my dad thinks that if everyone did what was best for them and only them that people would be happier. whats that good place quote about some of us getting gotten past me versus them where we decide that if our community does good we do good or how its better to give up a little for the greater good than to be alone. smth like that. some people have gotten past that. chidi says we choose to be good because we exist in a community and we want each other to be well. thats why we fight for each otherâs rights. because if theyâre hurting we are too. thats community. but people, like my dad, like most conservative people ive met, have sort of lost that desire to help. they only look out for themselves because trying to help others got them hurt and theyâd rather cut themselves off from community than open themselves up again like really political beliefs are based on if you care about others or not. are you selfish or selfless? are you self centered or empathetic? and to answer honestlyâ actually im changing my mind. actually i dont know. i think people are good. i also think were both selfish because of our idk primal desire to survive no matter what and also selfless because if us does well than we individually also do well. idk. im naturally selfish. i take the last cookie without thinking and sometimes i dont give a shit cos most of the time i baked them and i figure its alright to. most of the time i look out for myself. and thats scary. because thats my dad. and i feel like its all very inevitable. and heres fatalism again. it feels like theres only one outcome. we can only be activists if we care about others as much as ourselves, if we believe theres a hope for something better, if we believe that most people are inherently good. and once you lose that hope and belief, well everythingâs just dull because the guy at your work does nothing and still gets paid as much as you do and that makes you mad and gas taxes have gone up yet again and god why are groceries and houses so god damn expensive now and you just ignore it because its just the way it is and you know you cant change it because the government is a greedy corrupted fat pig whose stomach is about to burst yet keeps eating and eating and eating and oh well theres nothing to be done there will always be rich people and there will always be poor people and there will always be greed and there will always be sloth and i feel like us asking the question what if it didnt have to be this way is only making us more miserable but its clear how privileged i am to even ask myself if activism is worth it bc if i stop fighting for things that people deserve it will not affect me in any real way. the worst that could happen is having to pretend to be straight. and i could just ignore it as people suffer because im not suffering so why should i help someone if im fine and god thats such a toxic way to live.
ugh im just feeling super apathetic and fatalist cause i feel like nothing is going to actually change no matter how hard we fight for it one summer the drought in california will be so bad that theres no more running water and people are dying of heat stroke on the streets while rich people enjoy ac and fresh unbottled water or the hills catch on fire and the sky is a hazardous shade of saffron and the sun is a burnt out cinder or san francisco and miami and new orleans and venice and countless other coastal towns and villages sink inch by inch year by year and until the ice is gone and the bees are dead and there are famines because now the central valley is too hot to produce food and everything slowly slowly getting worse and worse while the rich keep on living its just like god i want to undo the universe i wanna go back and step on the fish that crawled out of the ocean i used to dream about going back and stopping adam and eve from biting the apple and going back and stepping on the snake and going back and cutting down the tree and if we could do away with money as a concept people would still find a way to hoard power and create inequality and if we went and executed jeff bezos someone would take his place were too far gone big red X experiment failed reboot lets try it again michael there is no way out except to destroy the maze altogether us and the thread and the minotaur with us i am on my way to becoming a ya villain or god

Why Bianca Spender is skipping Australian fashion week
I dont think I can capture everything I want to in a traditional show format, she explains. My runways are never straight.
Cut from the same cloth ... Bianca Spender (right) with her mother, designer Carla Zampatti. Last year, Spender staged one of the standout shows at Fashion Week, featuring a diagonal series of catwalks that snaked through the crowd. The critics loved it but photographers hated not being able to capture the perfect front-on shot. Over a shared meal of grilled whiting fillets, a dish of fregola with seafood that is like a more chewy risotto, and salads, we discuss the front, back and sides view of fashion, as more people explore fashion through two-dimensional images, often on their smartphones. Spender believes social media, specifically Instagram, has had a huge change on the way people can market ideas. I feel lucky because my clothes are better in movement. When online shopping first came out and everyone was straight front, back, sides, I was like, You dont have any idea how that skirt floats or feels, and I was really struggling with working out how to translate my ideas. Movement is at the core of how Spender designs and produces her clothes, joking that skirts must pass the Martin Place test, named after the notorious wind tunnel in the Sydney CBD. Since becoming a mother to two sons, now aged seven and 10, those tests have expanded to include the carrying the baby test to determine dress lengths (Spender doesnt own a pair of jeans).

Spender with Sydney Dance Company's Rafael Bonachela.Credit:Louise Kennerley Spenders obsession with movement was put to the ultimate test recently, when she designed the costumes for the Sydney Dance Companys 50th-anniversary production of Cinco, under artistic director Rafael Bonachela. Some of the dance movements were so physical that three costumes ripped during rehearsals, and there were many repairs required. Each [costume] fitting, the scope of movement was amazing and even if I had mimicked it I couldnt mimic what would happen to the costume when it was on [the dancers], she says.

Every family photo from the age of five to 11, I am in my ballet costume. I loved it so much I wouldnt take [my costume] off, she says. I call myself the tortoise. My mum loves running fast and loves winning. Bianca Spender Spender's gazelle-like physique and flowing strawberry blonde hair means she could easily pass as a professional dancer, although she admits age and the way she moves has taken its toll on her body. I only recently realised at the physio when he asked how I move everything is always very extended, I am not holding my core very much," she says while demonstrating how she would pick up a vase off a table, arm outstretched. "I love how everything looks when its long but then you dont protect your body.
Grilled whiting fillets at Totti's.Credit:Wolter Peeters Spender grew up in Sydney the middle of three children to fashion icon Carla Zampatti and John Spender (her parents separated in 2010). She recalls living in big, spacious houses where classical music was often playing and small talk was non-existent, the family preferring to tackle politics or business at the dinner table, sometimes to the bemusement of Spenders classmates. At school she would demonstrate her eccentric fashion taste on mufti days, but it wasnt until Spender reached adulthood that she truly understood her familys notoriety in Sydney's cultural scene.
Bianca Spender has formed a reputation at fashion week for her non-linear catwalks.Credit:AAP Only years after I left school and I [reflected on] certain conflicts with certain kids that Id never understood. People would say, Well your mum is Carla Zampatti, and I was just like, Oh.

Credit:Ian Charles Cugley/SMH My mum is pretty normal, shes a postwar immigrant. What that means to me is you have to finish all your food, you live in a beautiful house but you understand the value of money. For a pre-teen Spender, that meant school holidays spent working at her mothers inner-city office, doing every job from tea lady to banking clerk. I am the most ridiculous jaywalker because I have been walking around the city since I was eight, Spender jokes. A firsthand apprenticeship in the Carla Zampatti offices, coupled with her familys work and social ethic, meant Spender had quite a feminist upbringing. I never felt the need to answer to a man, dress for a man, or been dependent on a man for anything. They dont have to approve of how I talk, what I wear, what I earn, what I spend my money on. Last year, Spender reached another milestone when she and Zampatti divided their businesses into separate entities, including a new head office in Rushcutters Bay for Spender. The pair are clearly close, often travelling together overseas or to fashion shows in Australia (both brands are carried at David Jones, for example). But when it comes to their work practices, Spender admits they are quite different. Loading I call myself the tortoise. My mum loves running fast and loves winning. She has racing car blood in her family (both Zampattis brothers were race-car drivers) but I am about the journey. Its not that I dont want the end result to look great. You can get a good result and have a terrible journey but that doesnt mean the same to me. I am [about] the long game. Which comes back to Spenders Fashion Week dilemma. She has a big vision of a project involving 10 women who have influenced her, dressing 10 other women, using her carefully archived collections. Its still morphing but she knows it wont be ready by mid-May, when fashion week takes place. I am probably being too ambitious in what I want to achieve out of it. But at least if I am pushing myself to strive for something. I wont do what I expect and Ill find that new form. (A week after our lunch, Spender phones to say she has decided to sit out of Fashion Week and will instead stage a solo, more intimate event in early May.) Recently, Spender has experimented with salon-style showings, where she revels in getting up close with the clothing and the customer. As someone whos more comfortable at a dinner party for 10 than a cocktail function for 300, Spenders aversion to big-production shows is understandable. At least if I am pushing myself to strive for something. I wont do what I expect - and Ill find that new form. Bianca Spender At a big party, my partners wings will get bigger. Whereas if you have me at a dinner party, I am passionate put me around lots of people and they are asking, Whats wrong with you? I am so not a show pony I find shows an incredible creative process but the way you only get eight to 10 minutes to present your world I remember once saying 12 [seconds] to [stylist] Mark Vassallo and he said, No, 12 is way too long. And I said, That dress took 12 weeks to get right and I cant have it on stage for eight seconds. I want to challenge that.
The bill at Totti's. One point on which Spender and her mother are in lockstep is on the retention of Australian fashion talent (Zampatti funds a scholarship for a UTS graduate to study overseas, with the intention of them returning home). Unlike some of her peers, Spender, who worked in France and Italy in fashion for four years after completing a commerce degree, has resisted aggressively chasing sales or the limelight overseas. We know we [Australia] are leaders in sport compared to our population ... in fashion theres still a, Whats everyone else doing? attitude. New Zealand has a very strong vision for its fashion with a small population but Australia is often very outward looking. We need to find a bit more confidence in ourselves and our own vision and our own style. Our need to be revered by overseas comes from our lack of supporting ourselves and our culture Whenever [a journalist] writes on a designer, its X is stocked on [e-tailer] Net-a-Porter. Do they need to be stocked there for you to love them? A lot of people go bankrupt trying to catch the overseas dollar. I am focused on building my Australianmarket. If my international market comes quicker, great, but I am not running after it. I dont need it to prove to myself that what I do is unique and has a strong vision. THE BILL, PLEASE Totti's 283 Bondi Road, Bondi 02 9114 7371 Open: Mon-Sat 11.30am-10pm, Sun 11.30am-9pm Melissa Singer is National Fashion Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Is AA Too Religious for Generation Z?
Are todayâs mutual-aid recovery groups ready to satisfy Generation-next?âMore than any other generation before them, Gen Z does not assert a religious identity. They might be drawn to things spiritual, but with a vastly different starting point from previous generations, many of whom received a basic education on the Bible and Christianity. And it shows: The percentage of Gen Z that identifies as atheist is double that of the U.S. adult population.âReleased early this year, Barna Groupâs Generation-Z Report (Americans born between 1999 and 2015) surveyed over 2,000 13 to 18-year-olds. The oldest of this generation turn 20 in 2019.According to AAâs most recent triennial membership survey, 1% of AA is under 21âthatâs about 20,000 sober teenagers in AA rooms right now. Whatâs my personal affinity with this demographic? Itâs two-fold: I have two millennial children and one 18-year-old stepson; secondly, while I am a grey-haired Baby Boomer, I was a teen at my first 12-step meeting. My 20th birthday was 1980, three months shy of my fourth anniversary clean and sober.I was a second-generation AA member andâlike Barnaâs youth focus groupâmy worldview seemed incompatible with the old fogies of 12-step rooms. My mother mused about finding godâs will for her from meditation or her daily horoscope. She was such a Virgo, you know. Horoscopes, higher powers, legends of Sasquatch, these were all fictional symbols as far as I was concerned. Reasonable people didnât take such constructs literally, did they?Bob K, like me, is a second-generation AA. Heâs currently between historical book projects; Key Players in AA History will soon have a prequel. Bobâs follow-up research will produce a book about pre-AA addiction and treatment. At age 40, Bob made it into AA as a result of his dad 12-stepping him. He also was uncomfortable with the emphasis on "God." âWhen I was a month sober, it was âGod-this, God saved meâ and I was going to put my resignation in. I didnât think I could stand it in AA any longer. I went to the internet of the dayâwhich back then was the libraryâand I looked for non-religious alternatives to AA. They had them in California but nothing in Ontario Canada. So it was AA or nothing. If I tried to brave it alone, Iâd be drunk; I knew it.âToday, Bob enjoys the likeminded company at his Secular AA home group, Whitby Freethinkers, which meets in the local suburban library just East of Toronto. If I were confronting addiction/recovery as a teen today, I wonder if I would go to AA or NA? If AA was once âthe last house on the block,â today itâs one house in a subdivision of mutual-aid choices. Today, newcomers have access to Refuge Recovery, SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS), or Medically Assisted Treatment, none of which existed in the 1970s.On Practically Sane, therapist Jeffrey Munn states: âI like to take a practical approach ⌠Iâm not a fan of the âfluffâ and flowery language that is often associated with the world of psychology and self-help.â Jeffrey came into the rooms at 20, stayed sober for 2 ½ years, relapsed, came back and is now 13 years clean and sober.âI was mandated to three 12-step meetings per week to stay in the program I was in. Since I was young I have been agnostic. I wanted to find a higher power that was common sense-based, but in the rooms I felt pulled towards a more dogmatic spiritual idea of higher power. Back then, I needed to come up with my own conception of what was happening on a psychological level." Recently, Jeffrey wrote and published Staying Sober Without God: the Practical 12 Steps to Long Term Recovery from Alcoholism and Addiction.âI looked at SMART Recovery,â Jeffrey tells The Fix. âI looked at Moderation Management, tooâthat one struck me as being an organized resentment against AAâI wasnât feeling it. When it comes down to social support and a practical plan of action, itâs hard to beat 12-step programs. What I try to teach is: if you donât buy into any kind of a supernatural higher power, navigate the 12-step world, filtering the god-stuff out, working the program in your own way; there is lots that really works.âBarna reports, âNearly half of teens, on par with Millennials, say, âI need factual evidence to support my beliefs.ââ Jeffrey hopes Staying Sober Without Godâwhich joins a growing secular 12-step recovery offeringâoffers the rational narrative todayâs youth crave. Barna calls todayâs youth âthe first truly post-Christian generation [in America].âCertified Master Addiction Counselor David B. Bohl of Milwaukee understands the value of other-oriented care. David tells The Fix: âAs head of a 20-bed coed dual-diagnosis treatment center, emerging adults, 18 to 25 years old, came into our care. I wouldnât say that they universally shrugged off the 12-step approach but almost universally, in reaction to our volunteers, alumni, and traditional AA community, younger clients didnât want what the volunteers and alumni had. And I wouldnât say it was the religiosity always. Sometimes it was an age-thing or life approach. So, our recovery management function became that much more important in terms of building individualized treatment that suits everyone.âIn the USA, 75% of all residential treatment centers identify as 12-step facilitators,â David tells us. âIn the simplest form, our job is to introduce people to the language and the concept of the 12 steps and then to introduce the clients to support groups or people in support groups when they are discharged from acute care.Where trauma is involvedâreligious trauma in particularâtraditional AA language and rituals trigger that shame they feel from negative formal religion experiences.âLetâs put this overbearing religion caution to a real-life test: Suwaida F was the second oldest of 11 children to Somalian refugee parents who fled to Canada in the 1980s.âIn Kindergarten I didnât have to wear a hijab; my parents werenât super religious. I went to an Islamic school in grade one. It was normal for teachers to have belts with them, they would hit you; child abuse was normalized. They didnât really teach us that much math, science, history. The Islamic teachers werenât that educated. My parents took me out and put me in public school. Then, some of my momâs Somalian-Canadian friends started moving their kids to Egypt. My friends would stay in Egypt two years, finish the Qurâan and the girls came back wearing burqas and head-scarves. Some Muslim friends would come to school in their hijab, take them off and put them back on when they went home. We called them The Transformers. My parents really wanted us to learn the Qurâan; I donât speak Arabic, so it was difficult. And I never believed it. I asked my mom and dad, âHow do you know that this stuff is real?â They got frustrated and mad and said, âDonât ever ask that question again.â I knew it wasnât real. Mom got more and more religious. Pictures of her at age 19 -- she wore no head-scarf when she was my age. My mom expected me to be religious and I rebelled. I had to leave home.âSuwaida misses her sisters. She feels unwelcome in the family home unless she is dressed in the Islamic custom and that wouldnât be true to herself. Away from home, Suwaida found the welcoming community she craved in the booze and cocaine culture.âIt wasnât a matter of having no money; I had no sense of hope. People at work didnât know I was hopped from shelter to shelter at night. One winter I was told, âSuwaida, youâve been restricted from every youth shelter in the city of Toronto.ââ As addiction progressed, Suwaida recalls an ever-descending patterns of compromises, bad relationships and regrets.âToday, itâs like I still never unpack my suitcase; Iâm always ready to go.â During a stay at St. Joeâs detox, Suwaida went to her first NA meeting.âAt 7 PM, a woman spoke. I made it clear that I thought it was stupid; I wouldnât share. At the end, everyone was holding hands to pray and I said, âIâm not holding any of your hands.â I didnât go back. When I was discharged, I went drinking at the bar with my suitcase, not knowing where I was going to stay that night. My second meeting I consider my first, because I chose it. I thought I should go to AA. I googled atheist or freethinker AA to avoid a repeat of my NA experience. I found Beyond Belief Agnostics and Freethinkers Group on the University of Toronto campus. I went there last February. For a while, I had wine in my travel-mug, and I didnât say anything. In August I felt like the woman beside me knew I was drinking, and I ask myself, âWhat am I doing?â So, my next meeting, I went sober. Iâve been clean and sober ever since.âDespite the child-violence of Islamic school and rejection from her family, Suwaida isnât anti-theist. âI do believe in God or in something. I feel like Iâm always looking for signs. I donât believe in a god in the sky but to say thereâs nothing beyond all this doesnât make any sense to me. Sometimes the freakiest things happen. Maybe itâs because Iâm a storyteller, I try to make a story out of everything; you think of someone, then they phone you, is that random?I feel a part-of in secular or mainstream AA meetings. My self-talk still sounds like, âDonât share Suwaida, you have nothing to add.â Maybe it comes from not being able to express myself when I was growing up. I have no sense of self. I guess I have something special to offer but I donât know how to articulate it. Itâs hard; I have limited self-confidence.ââGive them their voice; listen to them,â is Kevin Schaeferâs approach. He co-hosts the podcast Donât Die Wisconsin. Heâs also a recovery coach.âIâve been in Recovery 29+ years. Iâm a substance abuse counselor and I got into addiction treatment through sober living. When I started working in a Suboxone clinic, I came to realize that AA canât solve everything. I always come from a harm reduction standpoint: meth, cocaine, benzos; I ask, âCan you just smoke pot?â and we start building the trust there.Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) is geared towards this generation. Most kids coming through my door know a lot about MAT, more so than people in AA with the biases and stigma that they bring. Kids sometimes know more than the front-line social workers. Their friends are on MAT, thatâs how they gather their information (not to say their information is all correct). But a lot of therapists donât understand medication. Medication can be a ticket to survival out on the streets.âThe Fix asked Kevin his opinion on the best suited mutual-aid group for this generation.âMost of the generation youâre talking about walks in with anxiety and defiantly wonât do groups.â We talked about the role of online video/voice or text meetings for a tech-native generation. âYesâwhere appropriate. Women especially, because from what Iâve seen, most females have suffered from trauma. I have heard women who prefer online recovery; that make sense to me. Iâve been to InTheRooms.com; as professionals we have a duty to know whatâs out there. And there are some crazies online. If someone has an Eastern philosophy bent, Iâll send them to Refuge Recovery; Iâve been there. If I can, Iâll set them up with somebody that I know can help them. And letâs not forget that some youth, if Christianity is your thing, Celebrate Recovery is amazing â talk about a community that wraps themselves around the substance user. There are movie nights, food, all kinds of extracurricular activities. The SMART Recovery Movement? Excellent. SMART momentum is building in Milwaukee. They are goal-oriented and the person gets supported whether theyâre on Suboxone or, in one case I know, micro-dosing with LSD for depression; theyâll be supported either way. My goal with youth is: âTry to get to one meeting this month; start slow.â Donât set the bar too high and if they enjoy it, then great. The 12-step meeting I go to, itâs a menâs meeting. There are people there on medication and they donât get blow-back. I wish more of AA was like this. When I came in, almost 30 years ago now, I saw all the God-stuff on the walls and I thought, âNah, this isnât going to workâ but thank G⌠(laughs), thank the Group of Drunks who said, âYou donât have to believe in that.â The range in my meeting is broadâEastern philosophy, Native American practices, Yoga, I was invited to Transcendental Meditation meetings at membersâ houses. I was fortunate to fall into this group. You know, the first book my sponsor gave me was The Tao of Physicsânot The Big Bookâit was this 70âs book with Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, correlated to physics and contemporary science.âSo, as to the question that kicked this off, some mutual aid meetings are ready to meet the taste of a new generation; results may vary. Whoâs heard: âIf you havenât met anyone you donât like in AA, you havenât gone to enough meetingsâ?The reverse is true, also. If the peer-to-peer meetings Iâve sampled seem too narrow or dogmatic, maybe my search for just the right fit isnât over. And if I donât want a face-to-face meeting, thereâs always Kevinâs podcast, virtual communities like The Fix, or I can order one of Bob or David or Jeffreyâs books if thatâs more to my taste.

Stop Building Garages: How Driverless Cars Will Affect Real Estate
Driver-less cars are going to change alot, and if you havent been actively reading about this, then its most likely going to happen much faster than youre expecting. At first glance, there may not seem to be much overlap between the auto industry and the real estate industry, but the impacts and infrastructure changes from this technology will be felt by everyone. As investors, its our responsibility to understand changes as far out in advance as possible so we can adapt to progress and mitigate new risks. Just about everything in this article takes place across the next 1530+ years, which may seem useless to some. However, if youre currently buying 30-year mortgages then youve got commitments that fall well within this transition period, and these changes will affect you. Having a better understanding of the future can be massive risk-mitigation tool against getting caught off guard when changes negatively affect you. Driving Will Change Where People Want to Live Because Cars Will Commute for Us Imagine you could wake up at 6 a.m. and crawl into your car and tell it to head to work while you got back to sleep. In two hours, youre there, youre safe, fully rested, and you arrive at work on time without having to deal with traffic or the monotonous task of driving. This is not science fiction. In fact, based on todays technology, this isnt even far fetched. This is science inevitability. So how does this affect real estate? Well, think of all the people who dont want to live in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, or New York City. What if they could live an hour or two outside the city and commute to work without losing any real time out of their day? How might this affect home values in a city when people can commute there easily without having to live there and without making any sacrifice to do so? It doesnt even have to be this extreme, either. Lots of people would be willing to commute for one hour each way if they didnt have to drive. This creates a lot of space between a city hub and the places people can live without taking on the financial burden of city costs. Might home values in a city go down when the necessity to live close by is reduced? Maybe cities will create an even larger price premium for those who can afford to live there while the masses are forced to commute an hour or two each day from poorer suburbs. Cars Will Be the Next Rental Real EstateOwning a Car Will Be a Luxury Car ownership is going to be a thing of the past before you know it. Sound crazy? Its not even a secret in the auto industry. Did you know that Ford, the oldest car company in America, has announced its going to stop selling cars and just sell trucks and SUVs? How can they do this? Thats a lot of cars to give up on selling unless they dont expect to lose that many sales. Companies who host ride sharing like Uber, Waymo, and Lyft are developing fully autonomous vehicles and are building fleets to replace personal car as we speak. General Motors is building a mass-market, fully autonomous car right now that will not be sold to the public. It will be only be used as part of a ride-sharing platform and available (supposedly) in 2019. That means two of the biggest auto manufacturers are starting to just flat-out not sell their products to the public. This is a signal of really big change. Owning a car isnt really that expensive, but there is zero return on investment. Its only an expense. However, once cars can finally drive themselves 24-hours a day, all while producing income, the value of ownership will go through the roof. The most likely scenario is that Uber will sell unlimited-use passes by the month, and we will all happily give up car ownership in trade. Itll be on-demand, easy, fast, and awesome. It may sound far fetched, but people will happily give up car ownership in the not-so-distant future when the cost savings become obvious. The value of any business is based on its income production. If you think cars are expensive now, imagine how much more they might cost when its a guaranteed profitable purchase. Related:Your Car is an Expensive, Health-Sucking, Time-Wasting Machine. So, Ditch It! Those with means to own their personal cars will create a moat between social classes. These days we might see a Ferrari and say, Oooooh, that person has money! Look at their fancy car! In the future, someone driving a Camry might get similar treatment: Ooooooh, that person has money, they can afford to have a personal car!!! Lots of people in America buy their own homes, and some own an extra house as a rental. The volume of landlords is relatively small because owning a house requires capital, resources, knowledge, risk mitigation, etc. In the future, cars will be the new rental real estate; people with means will still own their cars, and a few will own an extra car. The second car will drive itself around as part of a ride-sharing platform and produce income, just like a taxi, but passive.
Remember That Extra 900 Square Feet Everyone Had to Add to Our Houses to House a Car? What Were They Called? Oh Right, Garages! Why would you need a garage if you dont own a car? What value does a garage provide? Storage, for sure: We get to put our unsightly water heater there, the Christmas decorations, and the treadmill that my wife just had to own. Is that all worth the space and cost that a garage requires? Not likely. So will garages be a premium in the future, or a nuisance? More likely itll fade from importance in middle-to-low-end housing and continue in luxury homes. This problem is already being tackled with large parking garages. It might be a bold claim to say you wont need your garage in 20 years, but the world really wont need massive multi-level parking garages. Efforts are already being made to find out how to convert these spaces into light retail, office, storage and other amenities. Its not going to be feasible to tear down all that concrete, but it will be imperative to find something useful to do with all that space. Currently we pay a premium for garages because they are a highly sought after convenience. However, when the majority of people dont own cars, will that garage command a premium? Or will it be a detriment? Whats the Land Underneath a Gas Station Worth? Some of the most valuable land you can find is sitting underneath a gas station, and for good reason. Corner lots with good road access on busy cross streets serve a lot of cars and provide tons of ancillary needs. (Where else are we supposed to buy Slim Jims?). This infrastructure has been built up over decades and billions of drivers, but at its core it really relies on one thing: the internal combustion engine. Electric cars, however, dont need gasoline (surprise!). Youll charge at your home and probably at work. So how often are we going to need a gas station then? Hard to say, but the fact is, people will use a lot less gasoline, and my assumption is they will use gas stations much less. Now, obviously, some operators will find competitive advantages to survive, but many will not. And in rural areas, we should expect this problem to be much worse. A complete halt on gasoline sales is unlikely, because there are still uses for the product: small engines, generators, non-EV-conformers, etc. Thats a pretty weak position to hold onto though. Lots of industries are long gone, but still have niche support. Walmart will still sell you a CD Walkman (I saw one recently for $30!), but you wouldnt use that example to highlight the value of compact discs. Related:7 Sharing Economy Side Hustles Real Estate Investors Can Use to Earn Extra Cash When gasoline sales do slow, what will gas station owners do? I personally think most will go away, but not before suffering increasingly diminished profits as they experience the decline. Many will sell their businesses because of this, and what will their assets be worth? No one wants to look at a declining income statement trend and then pay top dollar. What about all the stores attached or adjacent to gas stations that capitalize on the heavy traffic? Ive heard of no great solutions to these questions, but that wont stop the impending takeover of autonomous and electric cars. How Long Will All My Daydreaming Take to Come to Fruition? If you dont read often about this topic, then its likely that this transition will happen much sooner than you would guess. People hear about autonomous cars and say, Itll never happen. Well, never will begin in 2020 when both General Motors, Ford, and others start to produce mass-market autonomous cars. What happens when every cab and Uber driver across the country goes jobless in a few short years? Ride sharing platforms will replace car ownership, as I mentioned earlier, and it will start next year. GM has publicly announced plans to build cars not sold to the public. They will only be part of their ride sharing platform.next year. How will home values be affected when waves of mass unemployment start? Take everything Ive mentioned so far and apply it to truck drivers as well. In fact, they will be unemployed first, as autonomous 18-wheelers are already being used in the UK. Unfortunately, I have no good advice for how to adapt to this, but anticipation and being proactive about change should help. For the Itll never happen camp, they will not take any measures to protect themselves and it will cost them dearly. What I dont want to convey here is not to buy a house with a garage because you might not need one in 30 years. Thats silly, but maybe get used to the idea of not needing one in the future. Sleeping in our cars is what poor college kids do when they are really stretching, but in 10 years it might be a feasible temporary option instead of stretching to rent an apartment. Twenty years ago smartphones didnt exist, now I cant go three minutes without touching mine. Its important not to get too confident of what is normal, as you may get caught stuck in the past. You dont need to have an MBA to know that businesses who refuse to participate in new technology go under. The board members at Blockbuster obviously had a strict head-in-the-sand policy. Dont be like Blockbuster. Embrace and adapt to changing technology.

How is the health insurance bill in the Senate going to lower costs?
Can someone explain to me how the bill going through the Senate right now does anything to control costs for the average family or person in the US? So far this is what I see: 1) If you have a good plan they are going to tax it - Raises costs 2) The insurance companies will have to cover everyone, even preexisting conditions - Raises costs 3) Cuts payouts to health providers for Medicare - Raises costs on others (they have to make it up) 4) Shifts costs to States for Medicaid - Raises state costs which raise state taxes 5) Cuts how much the Government pays for drugs - Raises cost when pharma makes up costs on private plans 6) Forces businesses to provide insurance for employees - Raises costs on all products Can anyone explain how this bill can lower costs for those who have insurance and keep them from rising? I received a speeding ticket (42 in a 25-mile/hour non-school zone; 4 points according to the D.C. DMV website) a week ago. I'm licensed in Virginia. I assume D.C. will notify the Virginia DMV and will trasfer the four negative points to my driving record. I haven't had a ticket since 2003 and currently have five positive points on my record. It is the maximum number of positive points allowed in Virginia. QUESTION 1: Will my State Farm insurance policy go up? Co-op smartbox for young drivers?
I am 18 and considering going through the co-op box scheme for young drivers. Everything about it looks great (I've gone from quotes of 6000+ to 3000!) but there's one area that concerns me - I can't imagine I'll be confident enough driving any time soon to be a wreckless driver, but I intend to go on holiday around Scotland with my friends in the summer where I'll be driving for a long time. I was wondering whether this might affect my insurance premium. So for example if I drove around 5 hours a week, consistently, for a few months, and then went on a road trip and drove for 30 hours one week, would this raise my premium? I ask because on the quote page it asks for how long I'll be driving on a weekly basis. Do any current customers happen to know whether they care at all? Thank you in advance! :)""

Why are there no good health insurance companies?
While thinking about the idea of an altruistic, fair public option for health insurance, I started trying to figure out why something like it doesn't already exist. (Or maybe it does?) The assumption seems to be that health insurance companies are causing problems through systematic greed, and the public option would help keep them honest. But, if this is the case, why isn't there an organization doing this already? Why don't the good, people, such as the ones that take less-pay than they could in other sectors to run major charitable organizations, start a good health insurance company that doesn't do any of the bad things that the other insurance companies do. If such an organization were to exist, it seems that everyone would switch to it, and even the most greedy of insurance companies would have to become like it in order to compete. There are obviously enough qualified and caring people out there to make such an organization happen without any government involvement. So why dont such organizations exist? I have a few ideas, but they dont explain the whole story. Maybe the fact that people dont usually shop around for health insurance because its chosen by their employers prevents new good insurance companies from gaining the market share required to make the bad ones change? Maybe health insurance companies are already as good as they can be, despite a few heartless employees, and the primary problems in health care come from somewhere else? Maybe protectionist legal policies prevent altruistic organizations from freely forming? Any thoughts?""

Where should I go for medical and financial aid?
I've lived w. my mother all my life and gradually she has gotten more and more unorganized leading to disgusting living conditions. I have always kept my room together and received good grades to move on and out of my mothers house. In 2008 during my first week of college , I was diagnosed with a disease called Lupus. I was removed from the Boston College campus and forced to take time off of school. Since this, my return to school has been an long and difficult process. I am now 20 cooping well with the disease and attending night school. I have very little income and I was denied SSI as well as state insurance. As I am in the process of reapplying I find it hard to remain in my mothers living conditions in that no matter how I keep my things separate I have still accumulated unsanitary conditions. I dont know where to go for help and I am afraid of the stress I am experiencing causing me another flare and long hospital visit. I live in Rhode Island and have tried the welfare and community health care route. The only success I receive is hospital health care and a few doctors who are willing to discount my mandatory visits. Sometimes I feel like the only thing that is keeping me health is my faith and religion. As my relationship with God grows stronger I also find my self stuck in my situation. I know I would do well living on my own and getting into a regular routine I would just need a small boost of medical and financial support through any means available in the area. Any suggestions will help :) God Bless.""

What would restitution be when my insurance is paying medicals?
I was hit on my bike by a driver of a car, who has since gone through the criminal court system and restitution has been awarded to me. So far, my own insurance company has been paying for my medical bills. What is my demand for restitution? Is it just the amount that the insurance does not cover (co-pays, etc.) or everything? What if I don't know how much medical help I'll need in the future? Is a restitution award a solid number, or can it be an agreement for the driver to pay medicals into the future, as well? I believe restitution also includes time I have missed from work (lost wages), etc.; Does it also include non-economic damages like pain and suffering? We have had problems financially in recent years and so our credit score is really bad. We are about to file bankruptcy. I'm wondering what the insurance credit score is and will our current financial situation cause the quotes to be high. An insurance company will insure a $260,000 home for its total value for an annual premium of $590. If the company spends $30 per year to service such a policy, the probability of total loss for such a home in a given year is 0.001 and you assume either total loss or no loss will occur, what is the company's expected annual gain (or profit) on each such policy? My car insurance is ridiculous!?
I am entering my 4th year of driving (22 yr old) with absolutely no claims and even with comparing market my car insurance goes up every year. New comparison has come out at over 2500 quid! I drive a 2.2 diesel but even on a little 1.0 aygo or similar car it is over a grand. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm going to quit driving. I have paid out over 8000 in insurance premiums with no claims and it is getting increasingly difficult to save for a house as you need around 30000 for a deposit.

Why didn't GW make an effort toward affordable health insurance for the Americans w/o any?
Should I consider getting health insurance??
I am 22 and have no health insurance. I am a pretty healthy person and don't have to see the doctor often. I just think it's a waist of money to get health insurance unless it's for accidents or something like that because in order to get an affordable monthly premium then your deductible is going to be high. I may never reach the deductible, but still have to pay the premium. So should I just pay out of pocket when I do need to go to the doctor and just consider getting a high deductible plan or should I just go ahead and pay a higher monthly premium for a lower deductible. (Remember I don't have to see the doctor very often, I'm relatively healthy)""

Car Crash and Insurance Please Help?
Hi, Yesterday I got in my first wreck I am 16 and the fault of the accident was put on me even though the woman in front of me slammed on her brakes so fast that I didn't have enough time to slow down. Anyway, the car I hit was a tank of a truck, I didn't put a scratch on it but her trailer hitch rammed into the front of my car, smashing the hood and other things. The woman said she will not fill out the insurance thing since I did no damage to her car so that brings me to my first question. If she doesn't tell her insurance company, which she probably won't, do I have to tell mine? My parents and I really don't want my rates to go up and my dad will be so furious if they do. My second question is how much do you think it will cost to fix my car? It is a 2003 Mazda Protege... Please help I really need to know and if you give a good answer I will give you 10pts in a heartbeat :) Thanks""

""As an estimation, how much would an 18 year old have to pay for insurance on a Mercedes Benz?""
I am 18 years old, and I have a beautiful opportunity to buy a Mercedez Benz for incredibly cheap. Problem is, I cannot buy the car until I know whether the insurance would be affordable or not. I did get a DUI when I was 17 years old, but it was reduced down to a Reckless Driving charge, considering it was my first offense, and a minor one at that. I do not have anything else on my record, including my driving record. The car is a 2002 Mercedez Benz ML320 that just barely hit the mark for 114,000 miles the other day. I have tried looking for insurance quotes but they all ask how many miles I put on it annually and how many days I drive it to work and all that junk. I cant answer these questions because the car is not yet mine. So I turned to this website for help! Somebody please help me with just a simple but relevant estimate as to how much money I would have to pay for insurance on this car. I do not wish to have the car under double-coverage. Just the cheapest form of insurance that would still cover my car if I were to get in an accident. Please and thank you! :D""
