thinking about the two common seals i symbolically adopted from Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen last year, Eva and Lytse Pier. that rainbow you see in the background was supposed to be the promise of a bright and fulfilling future for them both, but Eva's life was tragically cut short just last month. i hope she's still among that rainbow now—no pain, no worries, just seally happiness. and lots of yummy fish.

this is once more a PSA to please keep your dogs on leashes when outdoors to the best of your abilities (because i know dogs can escape), especially if there's a lot of wildlife in the area. please.

Seals are doing well around the United Kingdom since we stopped persecuting them, like these common seals seen earlier this year on a beach in Cornwall near to my daughter’s home. Machias Seal Island Light, disputed water between the Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy, Maine/New Brunswick. The lighthouse on Machias Seal Island is staffed by the Canadian Coast Guard. The island and its surrounding waters were declared a bird sanctuary in 1944. Its home to largest colony of puffins on the Atlantic Coast (south of the Gulf of St. Lawrence). During nesting season researchers reside on the island, keeping watch over the thousands of puffins, razorbills, murrs and other sea birds laying eggs and raising chicks. Machias Seal also attracts a lot of bird voyeurs from both sides of the bay, for that reason there also a resident warden on the island.

How long can the merpeople survive out of water? Can they move on land?

If you mean the merfolk from my recent comic then they can survive for quite some time since they don't dry up and can breathe air just fine (just gotta close the gills so nothing gets in there). The weather plays a part however. They can overheat if they're stranded on a hot summer day for example.

Movement on land is extremely limited and about as graceful as a floppy fish. Like they will legit roll and flop to go anywhere since dragging themselves with their arms is exhausting. Since it's a bit of an embarrassing display, and tiring, most don't go very far into land on their own. They're content to lie on rocks or only have their torso in the sand!

Those other marine mammals

For the UK bycatch project, I also had to illustrate some other species than the cetaceans I am so familiar with. Animals with legs and fur and nails... foreign concepts for sure. Jokes aside, it's always a challenge to illustrate a species you don't really know. I always wonder whether a seal or otter scientist would also approve of these, or if mistakes would immediately jump out to them (like they do for me with cetacean illustrations).

I don't really like how the harbour seal turned out, it looks too much like a stuffed animal to me. And the grey seal was a challenge because frankly, those males in real life look like weird muppets. So when drawing you're constantly torn between "does it look weird because I'm messing up or because I'm doing well?" haha. In the end I'm happy with it though! And the otter I'm very fond of. Such keen eyed creatures, I hope to see one in the wild some day.
