Though still rare, signs suggest that numbers of greater horseshoe bats are rising in the UK

It's International Bat Appreciation Day today, so I figured I'd draw a particularly unappreciated bat (Rogelio) with the one person that appreciates him the most - his baby sister, Iridián :3
Just a bit of context - Rogelio was sixteen when his little sister was born, and as he's currently 22 in the comic, Iridián is six here. Before he found work in his 20s, he did the majority of the childcare while his parents were working, and he still makes time to take her to and from school and hangs out with her when he can. Also unrelated but the uniform and school bag are based on the ones I had when I was in primary school :3 (This won't doxx me because bottle green is an alarmingly common colour for school uniforms in the UK)

Hi! I'm currently helping to rehab this little guy and was wondering if you'd like to rate him (or the species in general, but also him if you like) Common Pippistrelle
Hello, little one! Best of luck to you in your rehabilitation efforts! (If you happen to be part of a rescue, I'd be happy to post about them!)
Today's Bat: Common Pipistrelle
Environmental Impact: I don't think I've ever met a less discerning bat. The range on these guys spreads across most of Europe, into Morocco, and even out to western Asia. They'll roost just about anywhere, changing location from nursery to nursery and season to season. Limestone caves, park trees, siding panels? Pipistrellus pipistrellus calls that free real estate. Interestingly, they do seem to form habits despite their widespread nature. Individuals will continually hunt in the same areas, especially around lakes, ponds, gardens, and parks. Additionally, their migratory range is a tight 100km (about 62 miles). If you hate mosquitoes and other common pest insects, you'll love this species' efficiency and indiscriminate nature.

Beauty: Just look at that little fella. Classic brown coat, dark wing membranes, and the sweetest little snoot you ever saw. If you don't love the Common Pipistrelle on looks alone, I'm afraid your condition is terminal.

Power: Aside from the classics (delayed fertilization, extreme adaptability), I learned something sweet about the Common Pipistrelle. Mating season is largely kept to autumn, during which time males will perform specific mating rituals for females. A beautiful song and swooping dance would certainly capture my heart!
🦇🦇🦇/5
Overall: Thank you for sharing this little friend with us all. My own personal experience with the Common Pipistrelle had me partial to them, so it was fun to learn a little more!

Common pipistrelle
Scientific name: Pipistrellus pipistrellus
The common pipistrelle is so small, it can fit into a matchbox! Despite its size, it can easily eat 3,000 insects a night: look for it flitting around the garden or a lit lamp post as it chases its prey.

-Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) -Dwarf Epauletted Fruit Bat (Micropteropus pussilus) -Brown Long-eared Bat (Plecotus auritus) -Grey-headed Flying Fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) -Some kind of Myotis (possibly a Natterer's bat?) -Greater (?) Horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) -Pallas's Long-tonged bat (Glossophaga soricina) (Possibly a different Long-tonged bat, but I found the image source and this is how they labelled it, so...) -Southeastern Myotis (Myotis austroriparius) (or perhaps a different, similar myotis) (they all look the goddamn same!!!! lol) -Seba's Short-tailed bat (Carollia perspicillata) (potentially a different new world leaf nosed bat, the image source I could find very unhelpfully just labelled it a 'leaf nosed bat')

Library bats are bats that live in libraries and eat insects that could damage the books :3 you learn something new everyday, Bats that live in libraries are typically small and nimble species, such as: European free-tailed bats, Soprano pipistrelles, and Common pipistrelle bats, Bats eat insects that could harm the books, such as moths and beetles, that could damage the books' pages and glue. Bats can be found in libraries in Portugal, including the Joanina Library at the University of Coimbra and the Mafra Palace Library. During the day, bats roost quietly in the library, but at night they emerge to eat insects. Because bats are living things, they produce droppings, so librarians must clean up after them. To protect furniture, shelves, and floors, librarians cover them with tarps before closing the library each night. Because bats only hunt at night, it's unlikely to see them during visiting hours.

that's so cool and cute!!!
To answer the previous ask if Sun uses them, I am afraid he doesn't. He doesn't want any sort of critters inside his library (unless they are service animals)
