A Common Butterfly
A Elymnias hypermnestra agina or Common Palmfly staring into the distance in botanic gardens. Photo credit: Eleanor Chua.
This was taken against the shade of a tree with a stop of underexposure just to avoid having any burnt out highlights.

@robotzebra submitted: Time for some flappy friends.
First up is the glowy friend from a few posts ago. This time with a friend. I recently learned that they are common palmflys. Fun fact: In some sub-species the female will be orange and presumably mimic members of the genus Danaus. While in others both sexes are mimicking Euploea with dark color and blue spots. Genetic studies indicate that this has evolved independently multiple times. These two belong to a monomorphic population I believe.
A cute litte friend, some kind of skipper I presume.
What could this one be hiding?
Tada!
This one seems to be Hypolimnas anomala. And they also seem to enjoy hanging out in the purple hanging flowers.
This Tanaecia iapis (Horsfields baron) has found a nice spot of sunlight, not an easy thing to do under the thick canopy. The bright sunlight has unfortunately drowned out the nice baby blue of their wings though.
Next time: more lepidopterans. This time in the form of moths.
Ahhhh flappy friends are some of the best friends! Can’t wait for the moths, those are my fav. These pals though…………listen they are all good but can I just
Skippers are SO dang precious I can’t handle it emotionally. Thank you for all these friends and the facts along with them!

Note
about the common palmfly i sent in earlier: managed to put it outside using a takeout box and some paper towels. thing is its wings got pretty battered when we were chasing it around trying to get it out and it was bumping into walls and stuff and it wasn't flying when i took it outside so i just left it out there. feel kinda sad that it's probably going to die but i hope it had a good buggy life before flying into the house
rip butterfly you will be missed :(
It’s possible it was just worn out and that’s why it wasn’t flying immediately. Butterflies can take quite a lot of damage and still fly! Either way godspeed lil friend...

So, I got curious and decided to try and find what species the glowy butterfly is. And after quite a bit of searching I found him: Elymnias hypermnestra. Or common palmfly.
Interestingly, some populations are sexually dimorphic. Females mimic the orange Danaus ssp. While males is thought to mimic Euploea ssp. But this is not the case everywhere. Sexual dimorphism shows up in Thai and Balinese populations. While In peninsular Malaysia, singapore and sumatra, Both male and females look like the darker Euploea.
Also orange moth-friend is a Xyleutes mineus
@robotzebra submitted: I’m sorry for sending so many submissions, but it’s just that I have so many good pictures, and it’s so much fun to share them with such a enthusiastic audience.
Anyway I wanted to share some stories and pictures from a magical trip to Indonesia and Borneo partially for a course in tropical ecology. There I had many wonderful and memorable bug encounters.
On an island near Bali I woke up early before, almost everyone on the island and met this beautiful butterfly, and a large, lime, beetle friend.
Later on my trip I was fascinated by these carpenter bees living around our hotel, they was huge and with such pretty iridescent wings.
And that was before I even got to the rainforest.
The research station we were staying at i the forest would some evenings set up light-traps consisting of a white sheet and a strong light. And we got to see beetles and moths of all shape and sizes.
But two of my favorites are this one:
Which looks like a swedish type of peppermint candy.
And this orange friend which hitched a ride on my leg and would not let go. I ended up having to use some gentle persuasion so that I could go inside.
We also got to see adorable mushroom dwelling friends.
And there was also the experience of being out at night and be surrounded by little glittering lights, like stars in the sky. Except the stars were the eyes of spiders reflecting the light of my headlamp. ( I did feel a little apprehensive at the time. Not being completely comfortable with spiders at the time, especially unknown tropical ones)
Another cool experience was seeing fireflies for the first time since there aren’t any where I live.
Another favorite bug was the pill-millipedes. They were adorable and it was fascinating how they rolled up into perfect spheres. Unfortunately my pictures of them and many others are locked up on a hard drive that stopped working, but I have hopes of one day getting them back.
Anyway I hope you have enjoyed this story time and these pictures. Sorry for it being long.
Definitely do not apologize for sharing lots of bugs!! Especially cool tropical ones that I don’t get to see all the time. That butterfly is wild, it almost looks like it’s glowing. And the fancy green beetle!! Some sort of buprestid I imagine?
The carpenter bee wings!! Dang those are pretty. I think my fav friends here though are the swallowtail moth and the pepperminty-looking tiger moth. Maybe something in Aloa? That’s what it reminds me of but I couldn’t find the exact one. (Update! Cyana perornata)
Anyway I’d lose my mind to be able to see all the bugs there, even if the glittering spider eyes in the trees was slightly unsettling. If you ever get those pill millipede pics back, feel free to share! Pillipedes are deeeelightful.
I definitely enjoyed all these a ton, thank you so much for sharing!
