I collect a lot of strange, esoteric things, but vintage hotel soap may be a little out there. These little complimentary bars tell a story about the people that stayed at these places and kept these treasures for decades (like the collector who kept a Palmolive soap from every city and likely chain they stayed at). They also embody shifts in design, aesthetic, and commodity culture in the mid-20th century. I have a plan to give them new life, but for now, I’ll just act like a Gollum with her precious. #hotelsoap #vintage #collector #commodityfetishism #thesociallivesofthings

The above image is an image of three Ugg boots of varying colors. Boots and other styles from the multi-million dollar company of Ugg are very popular in the young-adult demographic, especially for the females of the demographic. The Ugg company was very popular in Australia for several years before it spread to the United States. Even though the actual boot itself is slightly ugly, the reputation is very popular in the United States after several major media figures started to promote the product. Have you ever wondered as to why such an ugly boot would be so popular among a demographic that would seemingly be inclined to being fashionable? A possible answer to this question might lie in the definition of a term named “commodity fetishism”. Commodity fetishism is a Marxist theory that “is the process of mystification that exists in capitalism between what things are and how they appear”, according to the book Practices of Looking. According to this definition, people are more likely to buy a product that has the popular trending brand-name even though the quality of those products may not be the highest. This is part of the reason that consumers buy so much product from ‘brand-name’ companies as opposed to other companies that are not known as well as the brand-names but have a higher quality. There may be other products out in the world that are of higher quality, but it would very difficult for that company to push past the commodity fetishism of Ugg boots.

Commodity Fetishism
Commodity fetishism is the idea of making products desirable, and ignoring/hiding the conditions of production from the consumer. The biggest example of this is Nike. Sturken and Cartwright wrote about Nike’s outsourcing their factories “where women were underpaid and working under terrible conditions” (282). In the Nike ad below they are marketing for women, and trying to sell women to buy their products. By using the statement, “Ladies first. Men second.” the advertisement is supposed to appeal to women, but also at the same time distract the consumer from thinking about the suppressed women working in these foreign countries. Yes, Nike is trying to promote women growth, but at the same time they are hiding from their ill-advised phases of production.

I’m also one of those “makeup is art” people … like, passing is an art, gender performance is an art. Sometimes the things that inform our gender performance are rooted in patriarchy though, obviously … however certain makeup practices can probably escape that @ least in part. Like, for cis women, that’s hard to envision bc the whole way makeup is marketed and presented to women is about covering up and making yourself more attractive/presentable … but for ppl like me or for trans women there’s some interesting things involved;;; like when I decided that makeup (and things marketed towards women) didn’t have to Be feminine and started putting makeup on my face and body, that sort of involves a “rebranding” (pardon the pun) of the flows of capital that determine gender ? I wear makeup Maybe 3 or 4 times a month, and it’s always with an eye towards making myself more obtrusive / exaggerating my presence with color, or tbh sometimes it’s a meditative practice similar to drawing (like shit, eyeshadow blending is hard and I’m proud of myself for mastering a rly hard technique). But even when I do wear makeup I never wear concealer. I never wear foundation. Even the names of those products are ., uh bad. Anyway I think makeup is cool bc if you want to present a particular way, makeup can help you change the shape of your face in fun ways … I used to use makeup to make myself older to get into clubs, and sometimes it’s fun to make my jawline really sharp and “masculine” but my cheekbones soft & “feminine” bc I enjoy mixing gender cues. My biggest issue with my current relationship to makeup tho is the “retail therapy” aspect of it like I Enjoy buying makeup even tho I hardly wear it. #CommodityFetishism anyway that’s my disorganized makeup thoughts

Commodity Fetishism In class this week we are learning about music. Newer forms of sharing music makes it somewhat easier for any artist to get their start, even without the constraints of a record label. Macklemore has done this with multiple songs of his. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s song “Wing$” is a great example of how songs can display the faults of our society. In this song, he talks about how our society is obsessed with labels and commodity fetishism. Throughout the song he tells the story of how he and his friends paid tons of money for brand named shoes only to really show off the brand. He states "I'm an individual, yeah, but I'm part of a movement...I wanted to be cool, I wanted to fit in" So, they did this in hopes of being cool and individualistic, but also hoping to fit into society even though those things contradict. At the beginning he is convinced he needs theses shoes, but at the end he realizes that they are just shoes he was paying for the label. #Music #CommodityFetishism #Wing$ #Macklemore #Labels Zia999.
