Okay kids, 33 year old here.
First of all: the pictured sonic device is a British invention, and that is UK signage. This is not uniquely American (and honestly, I’ve only seen these things one or two times in my life). This is not an overwhelming country-wide phenomenon.
Second of all: malls are a fairly recent innovation, peaking in the mid-80s through the early 2000s. And they’ve never been a magical third place for teenagers- they’ve always been privately owned commercial spaces with onsite security who would disproportionately target teens. We would spend a lot of time in malls but it was always clear it was never a space intended for us.
Third: these problems are not unique to your generation. Why do you think youth films from the 50s/60s showed kids hanging out in parking lots, backroads, abandoned buildings? Films from the 80s featured kids biking around the streets and woods? Any story about kids from any time features them struggling against authority and trying to find a place for themselves both physically and spiritually.
It also cannot be understated that these things vary drastically based on where you live. I grew up in an area of urban sprawl in Florida in which anything of note was at least a 15 minute drive and not very accessible by bike or walking. My neighborhood was surrounded by a thin strip of remaining forest though, so that’s where I spent a lot of my time. However, had I lived merely a 15 minute drive away, I would have been within a stone’s throw of a mall, or a library, or a large park.
Four: there are a lot of youth programs or centers in nearly every community. You may not think they’re ideal but they exist.
You are not missing out on a world where kids had an abundance of places to go. That world never existed. Kids just… made do with what was there.
