Aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford will return from mission in defense of Israel
The largest aircraft carrier in the United States returns from the Mediterranean Sea, where it has been parked for almost three months.

The U.S. Navy has determined that its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), will return home after a nearly three-month mission to defend Israel in the Middle East.
The USS Gerald Ford has been stationed at a close distance of Israel's attack in the Mediterranean Sea since October, in an effort to prevent the country's war against Hamas from turning into a regional conflict. However, the U.S. Navy states that the ship will begin its journey back home "in the next few days" and will be replaced by the USS Bataan - an amphibious assault ship named after a battle fought in the Philippines during World War II.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is one of the largest aircraft carriers in the world and the latest and most advanced aircraft carrier in the United States. He was already in the Mediterranean - involved in naval exercises with Italy - before receiving orders to provide support to Israel's Defense Forces after the October 7 terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas.
“Immediately after Hamas' brutal attack on Israel, the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was ordered to go to the eastern Mediterranean to contribute to our regional deterrence and defense posture,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended Ford's detachment three times in the hope that his presence would dissuade Iran and groups aligned with Iran, especially Hezbollah from Lebanon, from attacking Israel.
The ship, which carried about 5,000 sailors and more than 100 warplanes in eight squadrons, is now returning to its naval base in Virginia. However, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower will remain in the Red Sea to face the recent attacks on commercial ships perpetrated by Yemen's Houthi rebels.
“The DoD (Department of Defense) will continue to leverage its posture of collective force in the region to dissuade any state or non-state actor from escalating this crisis beyond Gaza,” the Navy said.
At the end of October, a U.S. Navy warship located in the northern Red Sea shot down three cruise missiles along with a batch of drones that were launched from Yemen and appeared to target Israel, the Pentagon said.

On Balance It Is Worth It
The job of the various military, space and aviation industries rarely embodies good public relations. For example, the Apollo 11 mission to the moon was to depart without a TV camera until a last-minute suggestion from Arthur C. Clarke to Brian Duff (Public Affairs Officer at NASA) that he couldn’t wait to see live images from the moon. That prompted a hurried install of a fixed focal length, fixed aperture B&W camera to the Lunar Lander leg which was already atop the Saturn 5 ready to go to the launch pad! Without that comment, after quarantine on return, you’d have had to wait 30 days to see the stills and 16mm film they shot. Gee, I wonder if people would have believed they were really there.
NASA is not very good at tooting its own achievements. Take the Hubble Space telescope for example. Scientists will tell you it uniquely helps us understand gravity and the fundamental laws of the physical world and that the future on Earth scientific results will help shape our world. But has NASA bothered to tell you that the mammogram and computer spectro-analysis many women now undergo was a direct spin-off, saving thousands with earlier detection of cancers? Add to that micro-endoscopes, 50% improvement to all CCDs made in the past 10 years (yes, that camera in your mobile phone uses Hubble technology), and if you wondered how they can make the computer brains so small, you have only to thank Hubble-developed microlithography—a method for printing tiny circuitry in computer chips.  I think Hubble is worth it, don’t you?
Apollo was groundbreaking is so many ways, it’s easy to begin to make a long list: The retractable roof in the NRG Stadium in Houston (the Texans stadium) is only possible with Apollo cloth material; Moon boots; the first computer chips and circuit boards; computer code used in every computer on earth; firemen’s safety suits; silver-ion water purification technology now makes all those giant aquariums possible; all your burglar house-movement detectors; solar panels now in use worldwide; implantable heart pulse regulator; cordless drills and tools; the micro-radar in your car to help prevent accidents; modern dialysis blood purification; the dust-buster; digital imaging technology developed into CAT, MRI, radiography, and microscopy in every hospital; all the way to mylar balloons and reflectors. I think Apollo was worth it, don’t you?
Think the Shuttle program and the International Space Station were expensive experiments? The medical and basic human physiology studies alone were groundbreaking and not feasible in Earth’s gravity. Everything from the safety of the food we eat every day to weather prediction allowing for saving countless lives. Of course, there’s memory foam mattresses; baby formula enhanced Omera-3; the mobile phone (the glass, the LCD, the alloy of the case, the programming, the camera, the microphone, the speaker…); precision GPS in your car and every plane flying; Shuttle shock absorbers now enable modern bridge design; invisible braces for your teeth; voltage controllers saving 30% of power in large machines (and every electric car); heart transplant cardiac pumps; Aerogel in your winter coats; and 3-d hologram displays (yes, those goggles gamers are using) – to name only a few new commercial advancements.  I think the Shuttle and Space Station were worth it, don’t you?

….Enugu, Abia, Imo residents stay indoors …Businesses shut in Ebonyi All markets, stores and artisans’ shops in Nnewi, the industrial town of Anambra and Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State, opened for business as traders and youths shunned the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest that started yesterday across the country. As usual, as early as 6:30 am, commercial buses and tricycle movements were noticeable on the roads and streets in Nnewi and Onitsha, conveying traders and artisans to their respective markets, stores and shops in the towns. Ndigbo had severally made their opposition known on the planned protests or 10 days of rage that started yesterday.Anambra State markets’ leaderships have assured that none of the markets would be shut down during the #EndBadGovernance protest ongoing across the country. There was normalcy in Onitsha and Nnewi, both commercial hubs of the state and other environs with filling stations and banks opened and transporters hustling for their daily bread. To douse the tension already generated by the protest, particularly among the traders and customers, Innocent Ezeoha, Chairman of Onitsha Main Market said the Igbo are not part of it. “You can see that the shops are open for business and traders and customers going about peacefully. “There is normalcy here. We are not part of the protest. We are already suffering hardship and staying at home doing nothing and pouring out on the streets to protest will not be the best option.“ We want government at all levels to do the needful. They should also help traders by ensuring a conducive environment for business to thrive in the country.” James Oraka, a trader at Nkwo Nnewi Market said protests have never solved social problems in the country, adding: “We, the Igbo don’t want to be part of the protest because other tribes will say we engineered it at the end. We are learning from history.” At the filling stations visited, the fuel pump attendants were busy dispensing the product to prospective customers. Other business activities are moving with security operatives doing their normal duties and no harassment of people. One Igbo vocal group that made their opposition categorically clear on the protest is the United Igbo Elders Council, UNIEC, Worldwide, and their stand, according to a statement they issued, yesterday is “based essentially on the differential attitude to human rights that the organisers have shown towards the Igbo/East in particular, and other Nigerians as well.” UNIEC, in the statement signed by its Director, Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi lgwe, and its Coordinator General, His Lordship Alpha Justice, said: “The loud silence, signalling acquiescence of some of its organisers to the extremely targeted injustices against the Igbo/East and for the last nine years, orchestrated killings with countless evidences of official involvement or connivance with no sympathy from anywhere, baffles the imagination. ”UNIEC’s statement entitled, Rage or Protest in Nigeria: Position of the United Igbo Elders Council, UNIEC, Worldwide, rather made a 10-point demand on Mr President to stabilise Nigeria instead of supporting the protest. Some of the demands included the immediate lifting of the economic and ports blockade against the Igbo/East, imposed since 1967 and subsisting till today, by which Port Harcourt, Bonny, Opobo, and other Eastern ports were rendered inutile, except for oil purposes, compelling the Igbo to divert en masse to Lagos to conduct their maritime businesses. You don’t speak for Igbo, Umahi tells Peter Obi Meantime, Minister of Works, David Umahi, has lambasted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 election, saying he is not the mouthpiece for the Igbo. Umahi added that Obi should refrain from allegedly inciting the youths of the South-East against the administration of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the planned August 1 protest. Umahi spoke, Wednesday, during the Ebonyi State Youth and Stakeholders Summit at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki. “Let me make this clear: Mr. Peter Obi does not speak for Ndigbo. Our governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and our traditional rulers are our leaders; they speak for us. Big plans for the “Cherry Orchards” in Allach (Bavaria, Germany)

The Eckpfeiler Immobilien Group[1] wants to implement a concept with apartments, businesses and a park in seven years. Not all neighbours are convinced of the plans.[2]
It is not far from Allach[3] train station to the future green oasis. Just under 300 meters along the back of the Evers shopping centre, you are in front of Elly-Staegmeyr-Straße. This, previously flanked by half-derelict warehouses, dreary commercial complexes and heavy truck parking spaces, will one day be the main route through a climate-friendly settlement.
Over the next seven years, the Eckpfeiler Immobilien Group, a project developer based in Pullach, wants to grow “Cherry Orchards”[4] from a completely sealed, 120,000 square meter commercial space in the north-west of Munich. It remains to be seen whether this also means an idyll of cherry trees that bloom bright pink in spring, as the name suggests - after all, half of the area is to be transformed into green spaces, 24,000 square meters of which will be in the form of a public park.
Above all, however, a new, sustainably designed residential area is being built on the former site of the Theodor Kirsch & Söhne steam sawmill in Allach-Untermenzing[5]. 1,300 apartments for around 3,000 people, 40 percent of which are socially supported. There is also a three-class primary school, which, according to the education department, could be put into operation at the beginning of the 2027 school year. Plus four daycare centres with a total of twelve kindergarten and ten crèche groups, a 250 square meter neighbourhood meeting place, retail, restaurants and lots of greenery. “Unsealing and converting industrially developed land is part of our DNA at Eckpfeiler; we do this in 80 percent of our projects,” says managing director Wolfgang Bogner.
The project between Kirschstrasse, Esmarchstrasse, Hintermeierstrasse and Allacher Strasse and the Munich-Ingolstadt railway line is considered a model settlement in terms of climate neutrality. The Eckpfeiler Group was recently awarded the DGNB pre-certificate in platinum by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)[6] for its innovative concept. This is the highest award that can be achieved in the planning phase of a city district.
The Cherry Orchards are not only creating what is probably Bavaria's largest wooden building district. The residents also get green roof terraces and inner courtyards with 400 newly planted trees, all of which are publicly accessible, as well as a mobility concept including 30 car-sharing spaces and hotspots for classic bicycles and cargo bikes. At the suggestion of neighbours and local politicians, a cycle highway leads along the tracks towards the city centre. And the energy concept provides for almost self-sufficient electricity and heat generation for the district. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roofs, which will be paired with groundwater heat pumps to provide heating and hot water.
The builders also pay attention to the principles of the circular economy. When demolishing the existing commercial buildings, Eckpfeiler is trying to avoid emissions. Existing materials are recycled and reused on site: “We use them, for example, to make concrete slabs and filling material,” explains Bogner. This is intended to avoid waste and reduce the need for new resources. "We want to create neighbourhoods that are worth living in and that also pay off ecologically and economically in the long term. And not just in construction, but also in operation." A side effect of this recycling process: less waste disposal traffic on the streets in the district.
But how does the Eckpfeiler Group want to manage such a project despite exploding material and energy costs, delivery bottlenecks, a shortage of skilled workers and high building interest rates? While other projects have to be frozen or cancelled due to the construction crisis? “In recent years, when prices on the market were very high, we were rather cautious about purchasing land and objects,” explains Bogner. Instead, plan for the long term and work with companies you have known for a long time.
The system construction method is also helpful: prefabricated wall elements and bathrooms are used. And Eckpfeiler receives various grants and loans for energy-efficient construction. The rental income from companies is also not entirely insignificant, some of which can stay on the site until 2027 because the settlement is only being built gradually in stages. “The situation is challenging for everyone, it can’t be glossed over,” says Bogner. "But we always planned to get started now, and that's what we're doing."
Building application should be submitted in spring
As well-rounded as the concept sounds from an investor's perspective, not everyone was enthusiastic about the planning in advance. For many neighbours, the nine-story buildings are too high, even if the planning department considers “space-saving construction to urgently create living space and for reasons of sustainability” to be “necessary.” Others are worried about sound reflections that could be caused by the railway, but the planners also refute these fears. The effects have been examined and there are no increases in levels.

But most people have the biggest concerns about traffic. In particular, residents and local politicians consider the narrow underpass on Allacher Strasse to be a dangerous bottleneck that needs a solution. Without the new development area, the city administration argues, the traffic load in this area would be higher in a few years than after the new district was built - simply due to the increase in traffic without a mobility concept.
The statutory resolution as a basis for the start of construction is still missing; it is on the city council's agenda this Wednesday 6-12. Bogner plans to submit the building application in the spring and hopes to start building the house in the fall. Five construction phases are planned, and the first excavators are scheduled to arrive in the spring.
In order to block out the train noise, the six-story blocks should first be built on the corner of Allacher- and Elly-Staegmeyr-Straße, including a daycare centre and a neighbourhood meeting point - "so that the new residents immediately have a place to go." Followed by seven to nine story buildings and the construction of the neighbourhood square in the heart of the new settlement. The three or four-story buildings in the southwest in the immediate vicinity of the existing development with single-family houses and semi-detached houses are the last to be built. Residents should be kept constantly informed throughout the entire process. “Because it’s really important to us,” says Bogner, “that the Cherry Orchards fit into the surroundings.”
