Great Hope Amidst the Pandemic
Tumblr media
As much as possible, we totally want to be in control of our lives. We take time to manage personal goals which are the big things to work for and accomplish such as receiving a diploma, getting married and having a family, starting our own business, becoming a big-time executive, or traveling the globe and such. These are essentially some of the things we want to do in life and in preparation for that, we plan. There may be small interruptions like atmospherical conditions, heavy traffic or sickness and we're used to it. But in an unexpected instance, in a snap, a pandemic called Coronavirus hit us by surprise and consumed us within months. Worst case scenario: it is a huge interruption everywhere with no specific vaccine.
Everyone has been writing on this and I don't know where to start. When I first heard about Coronavirus, there was a certain fear I felt as if my heart skipped a beat, wondering what repercussions it may create. By researching, I came to understand that it's highly contagious, attacks the respiratory system and no one is an exception especially the immuno-compromised ones. Knowing the fact that there is no cure for this disease heightened up my worries — for myself, my loved ones, my nation and the world.
The world is grippling with an invisible, deadly enemy. I had a feeling that it will be one heck of a ride. This pandemic got me feeling a roller coaster of emotions. I was not in my comfort zone. I had a lot of what-ifs. Before quarantine started, usual activities were still allowed despite having early cases in the country so I couldn’t help being paranoid at school, while commuting, while going to the mall and going outside with no choice but to be exposed to a lot of people which made me totally anxious and wonder "what if I get the virus" so, I did the best ways possible not to catch it. I sanitized every now and then, did limit interactions, took vitamins, used face mask and became extra careful when going out. After school, in the dorm where I stay, I really make sure to keep my health in check so I wash my hands, eat and sleep properly. Let me just say that living a little away from home sucks especially when there's a sudden global virus. I had to take care of everything myself. I was longing for security. I just wished I could go home.
There was a time back then when I really had a hard time sleeping that I fell asleep at 4 o'clock in the morning so it led to overthinking and unwanted panic attacks. Fears abound. Such uncertainty. How long will it last? What if I get sick since I lack sleep? What will happen next? Worries kept rippling because aside from these, there were school requirements to fufill, an overall health to watch and uncertain future to come so it was absolutely tough for me and took a toll on my mental health.
Days before ECQ was imposed, it was another day full of worries and not being in control. Classes were suspended due to more cases detected. So I packed my luggage, took a 1-hour ride to get home and finally be with my family. It felt good to walk into our doorstep but even if quarantine was imposed, oh God, my worries didn’t fade. Fear and anxiety were still present. During the first week of ECQ, I still got panic attacks and sleep issues. I was deeply overwhelmed. That’s why I willingly shared my thoughts to my go-to person, my mom. It's been a long time since I had a panic attack and that time, it was difficult to control and worse, even my sleep was affected. My mom would calm me down by helping me meditate with a bunch of essential oils and by staying present. I also talked over the phone to my Kuya who's in Manila and with other loved ones so it eased out my agony. Their words comforted me. Their company patted my back. I started to feel safe. I felt much better. I stopped dwelling on the negativity. I looked into the blessings which I'm really grateful for. I prayed to God. I consciously focused on the fact that I'm alive and I have a purpose. I knew I just had to shift my perspective. I started to heal. I started to pick up my broken pieces like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
Well, there’s always a new day. The virus is still there, but no one’s stopping me from overcoming my fears and doing what I love. Let’s face life no matter what. Since I'm really a home person, I didn't bother much about things to do in quarantine. These are the things that kept me going while staying at home: I do love being active so after getting up in the morning, I would pray and think about the things I'm grateful for. After that, I would turn the television on, go to Youtube and do my usual workout routine (a good sweat releases endorphins). I also got to bake some goodies, learn to cook new recipes and get creative with my makeup looks. I also do household chores and binge-watch my favorite shows on Netflix right after. I even do some home photoshoot so I get to play dress up. Spending time with my family 24/7 is a major blessing I experience amidst the crisis. Every night, I pray to God and talk to him sincerely. Prayers are the best antidote and His hands are my safe haven.

These were some of the meals I cooked.

Watching my favorite series, FRIENDS. A good laugh comes a long way.
With regards to academics, as a student and as a person, I was firm on my stand to push for mass promotion of all students. Considering the situation and ongoing threat of the global crisis, health is greatly at risk. I voiced out my opinion on social media. In my little way, I wanted to help those near around me to come to our house for internet access if ever mass promotion didn’t push through. Good thing my professors were considerate enough to pass us all even if the university didn’t go for mass promotion at first. Luckily, a new memo from our school’s administration came to a decision in benefit of the students. Mass promotion pushed through.
Tumblr media
This is a screenshot of my Mass Promotion post where I voiced out what I felt.
Just yesterday, I received a bad news. It felt devastating to lose one of the best professors I had. We didn’t see it coming. He suffered from severe pneumonia and tuberculosis. He was one of the people who believes in me and appreciates my passion. He had expert communication skills and a strong work ethic. Not to mention his great sense of humor that kept every discussion in class fun. I have always admired him. I will surely miss Sir Guban. Heaven gained an angel. May he rest in peace.
Tumblr media
This is Sir Guban, one of my best professors who just passed away.
Giving shape to time is indeed important now when the future is so shapeless. The pandemic is a whole new ballgame with new rules being created each day. We are challenged to let go of normalcy and face a new one. I know it’s hard to gain a perspective when you are in the middle of such uncertainty; to make sense of what is going on and how the future will emerge. But I have learned that I need to trust the process because eventually, it will unleash a better version of myself, a stronger one. As I began to reflect on the reality of such a virus and trying to contain it, it became clear that it says something quite wonderful about humanity. It says that we have the capacity to shift out of our comfort zones and to quite literally work together to save our lives and the lives of others. There is a tremendous hope for humanity being demonstrated around us. We can choose to walk through it lightly, with a little luggage, ready to imagine another world and ready to fight for it. Life may hit us hard countless times but I found out that it’s about finding ways to get back up again and moving forward despite the greatest obstacles.
Tumblr media
Always wear your face mask, sanitize, be mindful and be safe.

As the world reeled from the COVID-19 global health pandemic, Filipinos found themselves in community quarantine, in an effort by the government to contain the spread of the disease. Public transport was halted, and movements of individuals were limited. Everything was at a standstill.
Local governments scrambled to address the pandemic in their own localities. Many leaders stepped forward to offer innovative solutions. Some went the extra mile to provide the needs of their constituents. Civilians found ways to pitch in to support frontliners. The Bayanihan Spirit was very much alive and it was heartening to know that we still had leaders who can inspire.
Despite our best efforts as a nation, there were still millions of Filipinos who struggled with the quarantine. Sidelined for work and unable to earn a living as businesses closed their doors to adhere to government directives, the working class was hardest hit by the economic impacts of the pandemic.
I was fortunate enough to be able to work from home amid all these. I had a stable source of income to support my family. My loved ones were not sick. Amid the uncertainty, these few blessings gave me comfort.
Adults struggled with the impact of the quarantine — the paranoia that goes with the knowledge of the growing number of COVID-19 positive patients in the country, the challenges of adopting to the new normal, the mental toil of wondering what the future holds.
The struggle was real for everybody.  Purchasing supplies from the grocery entailed hours of lining up and disinfection upon returning home. Kids shifted from on site to online schooling. Internet and e-commerce became necessities in the new normal for work, learning and entertainment.
As I wrestled with these thoughts, I realized that children have a different view of the quarantine and the pandemic.
From the onset of the lockdown, we have taught my five year old nephew (he turned five during quarantine),  about the Coronavirus and what dangers it poses. As a matter of fact, he was the constant source of reminder my dad not to go out because the elderly was more vulnerable to the disease.
However, throughout the ECQ period, I observed that he never once complained about being stuck indoors. While he was used to spending time at the malls before the quarantine, he hardly ever mentioned going out this whole time.
This prompted me to ask him if he missed going out. Of course he did, he admitted, but it was okay for him to stay indoors for even longer. In fact, he didn’t mind if we worked from home forever.
He said he was very happy this whole time to have us all at home. He could spend more time playing video games with his dad. He could spend mornings, afternoons and breaktimes cuddling with his mom. He could have study time with ahma (my mom), wushu time with angkong (my dad) and going to zoom class with ahko (me) as his classmate.
Sure, he missed going to the playground, spending summertime at the beach, and going to school to meet his classmates. So instead of going out, we set up our own beach in our garage. We met his classmates via online classes. We made makeshift slides and roller coasters with pillows on the bed. He said he the happiest to have us all together at home. And that was what was important.
Amid all of the alarming news and the issues that threatened my peace of mind,  I was stunned that the quarantine could seem so different in the eyes of a child. Indeed, I realized that we were able to spend more time as a family in these three months than the last three years put together.
Yes, we were blessed to be in the position to help, rather than the ones to need help. We had a roof over our heads, we had food in our bellies and we had time to spend with each other. It was a simple and honest truth.
It is true that we have a long way to go to resolve this pandemic. Things may get a lot worse before it gets better and 2020 is really doing its best to roll out red carpet for bad news. However, for the meantime,  it will not hurt to focus on the small bright spots in this endless wave of challenges to inspire us to move forward.

I decided to write a mid-year blogging recap and life update because I felt like a lot has happened in the past few months that are worth sharing. That is even if we were confined in our homes most of the time because of the quarantine. View of Metro Manila Mid-Year Blogging Recap + Life Lately IN THIS ARTICLE In particular, I would also to share some of my learnings with regard to blogging, my experience (and travails) as a working professional amid the lockdown, reflections during the lockdown, and life in general. It’s my first time to do this type of update, something really personal, so please bear with my if I sound incoherent at times. Anyway, let’s start.  Blogging  The COVID-19 lockdown has hit the blog hard in terms of traffic. I once shared that I achieved a blogging milestone last year when I hit 10,000 monthly page views starting July. I was able to maintain that until the end of the year. If you are curious to know that’s about 70% to 80% organic traffic and around 30% or 20% social media traffic.  All my effort to learn SEO has finally paid off with the page view achievement. Being a non-techie person, I found it quite hard to understand the technical stuff of SEO but I eventually learned it through a lot of research. I was also fortunate to have met some amazing bloggers who were kind enough to share their knowledge when it came to SEO.  One of those bloggers that I wanted to give credit to is Mr. Jonathan Espina of the popular Jon To The World Travel Blog who was very generous with his SEO know-how and would not hesitate to provide answers when I would consult him, even if I have not met him in person yet. I would probably treat him to a bottle of beer or a cup of coffee when I get the chance to meet him. On the other hand, the social media traffic, though small, involved a lot of effort and ate up a lot of my time because I was participating in a lot of blog engagement groups. I immediately realized that it would be hard to depend on social media traffic so I put more effort to increase my search engine traffic.  However, at the start of the year, the COVID-19 pandemic grew in proportions. It affected mainly travel blogs; since nobody was searching for travel-related articles and destinations, traffic plummeted. My content is mostly food and travel, both industries that were greatly affected by the pandemic. My traffic went down to as low as 3,700++ page views in June, but that’s also because I stopped participating in blog engagement threads because I wanted to really gauge how bad my organic traffic is. I also wanted less time from social media and more time with my kids.  Anyway, when I observed the decline in traffic, I again made adjustments with regard to SEO. Probably one of the best SEO lessons I learned during the last few months was to remove zombie pages from the blog.  That means looking at and assessing content that are not getting any traffic or are essentially dead. From there, you can consolidate and repurpose content or totally delete those that you think are non- salvageable.  The idea is that when Google sees that majority of your content is getting good traffic, the search engine giant would take it to mean that you are providing valuable information to your readers. Therefore, Google will elevate your search engine results rankings.  In my case, I removed my old personal entries like poems and rants from almost a decade ago since they do not have any SEO value.  I consolidated some of the poems into one personal post, like a collection of stories, that was getting good traffic. I also removed old press releases, optimized old posts with new information, and rewrote some articles to make them evergreen. I made a lot of consolidations because my tendency before was to create daily journal entry types instead of coming up with one whole travel guide about the places that we visited.  I also optimized photos which meant reducing file size to make them lighter and adding alternative text (alt text), things that I knew nothing about when I was just casually blogging. It was hard work but it kept me busy during the quarantine.  On top of these, I did my best to come up with new content because I wanted to replace the old content that I was removing so that it would not negatively impact my domain authority (DA). Over the three months that I did it, was able to raise my DA from 29 to 31.  In terms of traffic, I observed some positive results with regard to organic search although it is still a long way to go before I hit the 10,000 page views again.  Speaking of new content, I had the confidence to submit entries in blogging competitions again. The prize money was enticing so I wanted to try my luck again and partly because I want to force myself to create new content for my blog.  I joined the RedDoorz blogging content, which I did not win but I received a consolation prize which is a free overnight stay in one of their properties. I also submitted an entry to ComCo Southeast Asia’s Write to Ignite Blogging Project, which aimed to collect positive stories during the pandemic. Fortunately, I placed 7th among 70 participants in the Write to Ignite Blogging Project, which was not bad at all. It was definitely a welcome change after losing in the previous contests that I joined, despite the fact that I knew I had a good fighting stance.  No matter, what’s important is the experience that I gained from those competitions and the determination to try again despite failing.  In terms of revenue from blogging, it came as a surprise that I had higher income from Google Adsense despite this blog’s low traffic. I also have income from two more ad networks but they have not been meeting the payment threshold during the lockdown as compared to Adsense.  But the main revenue stream of this blog is sponsored posts. As such, I can only be thankful to the clients for their trust.  Working from home  Since April, I had been working from home except two weeks last June when I had to report every day to the office. But all throughout the lockdown, I can only be thankful to our company for continuing to provide us with income despite the work suspension during the early days of the quarantine.  Hoping for the day when we can enjoy the simple pleasures Honestly though, I find working from home a lot stressful because our outputs and tasks are more closely monitored as compared to when we were in the office. And since it’s we from home, expect a lot of distractions from the kids as well as from household tasks that need attention. Again, I’m trying to look at the situation positively in the sense that I am with my children and I can take care of them in the morning and immediately after work.  Furthermore, because of the pressure to businesses brought about by the pandemic, it’s a natural tendency to have shake-ups within the organization.  Sometimes, you would also hear words from your leaders that you may find to be unfavorable. Just think that they are also pressured but they are doing what they can to boost employee morale and keep the business afloat during these trying times.  In the end, the hard truth is that we can all lose our jobs and livelihood anytime during the lockdown because of income loss. I pray that it does not happen though because I do not have big savings to support our family in the months to come.  Reflections during the lockdown  I think my thoughts during the quarantine resonate with most people’s thoughts and that is being appreciative of the things that we have, no matter how small and simple these things are. In a snap, things can change and disappear right before our very eyes. I remember our last date, that was in February. It was our Valentine’s date but we were so busy the days before so we had to postpone it for a week. Even so, we were glad that we pushed through with it because that was our last date in the old normal.  I might sound selfish in this statement but I would say it anyway. I probably needed the quarantine, or at least the time off from office work provided by it. Several months ago, I was wishing for more time with my children. In fact, I was considering to shift to a home-based job. That way, I can at least keep watch on my children.  But with the lockdown, I suddenly had so much time with my kids. We spent most of it playing out in the yard every morning and afternoon. I can only be grateful that I was able to spend so many happy moments with my babies.  In a way, what we get is actually what we prayed for. It may not be in the form that we were expecting (or hoping) it to be but if we look closer, it’s really what we asked for.  Life lately  Aside from working from home, there’s nothing new with our life lately. We had all plans postponed because of the pandemic such as finding a new condo, finding a house that we could possibly buy, and traveling to Boracay and Nueva Ecija. Hoping things turn out for the better soon so that we could go on with life.  One thing that had us concerned was when my son’s therapy had to be postponed. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with global developmental delay (GDD). With that, the recommendation was to enroll him to play school and undergo occupational therapy sessions so that he could catch up. However, two months into school, all classes had to be suspended because of COVID-19. We were worried that, with the postponement of the therapy, he would not be able to catch up. The school proposed that we do online therapy but we were doubtful of its efficacy.  We were offered a trial online session but, admittedly, we did not try it because we had reservations. Our pediatrician also told us that she was skeptical with the online therapy and said that it might be best to postpone it for now since he is still young anyway. Anyway, we can continue with the activities for our son and involve him in chores and a lot of play, of course. So far, we are seeing improvements when it comes to his concentration and eye contact. Our son also remembered some of the letters that we showed him. It’s not just memorizing the ABCs; he would pick up random letter and read it. Nevertheless, it would be best if we get the help of a professional occupational therapist.  As for our younger son, we are resigned to the fact that we will hold a quarantine first birthday for him. We wanted to give him a memorable first birthday like his Kuya but that might prove to be a challenge given the current scenario. On a positive note, we can always do the party at home with some friends and family.  Epilogue  That’s it for now. I know this entry is too long but I do hope that I was able to help you in some way. Keep in mind that we are all struggling and we are all fighting our own personal battles each day. Do not lose hope, reach out to people who can help you, reach out to people whom you think might need help. Tomorrow is a new day Don’t hesitate to tell us your story if that will make your load lighter; the comment section is open as well as our email and social media inboxes. We will do our best to help you to the best of our abilities. These will all pass.  For now, take care of yourself and your loved ones. Stay safe at all times! mbtTOC();

Quote
(Unli Dapa, from the words “unlimited” and “dapa,” a Tagalog word which means “to trip or to fall over.”) Unli Dapa encapsulates how our life has been during the Metro Manila quarantine that was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unli Dapa IN THIS ARTICLE Why Unli Dapa, you might ask? It’s nothing profound, really. Unli Dapa is a term that I quite jokingly coined to describe the afternoon walks that my wife and I had with our two little children during the lockdown. With all the time we had in our hands, I remarked that my eldest son could finally play outside to his heart’s content. And since I would put protective pads on his knees and elbows before we went around running, he would not get hurt even if he fell down a number of times, hence, Unli Dapa. In the end, our Unli Dapa moments, all those simple yet happy times of togetherness, kept us distracted from all the uncertainties during the quarantine. Life before Unli Dapa Before there was Unli Dapa, I was already at a crossroads in terms of my career. I felt like my job was eating too much of my time and I wanted to spend more of my hours with my children. Yes, my wife and I do come home early since we are renting a unit near the office. We can still take care of our children and play with them soon after our day at the office is done. We feed our kids, read a book to them, and put them to bed, and we would still have a bit more time left for ourselves. We are grateful because, unlike other working parents, we have this privilege of being with our children immediately after work. In spite of this, I can still feel a void inside me, a yearning to be with my kids a little more. I think it was the routine at the office that was already taking its toll on me and beginning to rob me of the things that make me happy. When my mind wanders sometimes, I get sad with the thought of one day waking up and realizing that my kids have already grown up without me noticing it. On many occasions, I wished for the day when I can finally make it up to my kids. Thinking about it now, I was actually praying for the day when our Unli Dapa moments would arrive. Unli Dapa steered us through gloom The answer to my prayers came in an unconventional form because I had to find it in the midst of gloom. By mid-March this year, the entire Metro Manila was placed under a widespread lockdown because of the pandemic. Honestly, I thought that the quarantine would only last for a week. After that, we would be back to our regular routine. That was not the case though, in fact, the community quarantine was extended a few more times until we were allowed to resume work at our office. Could this situation finally be the Unli Dapa that I was fervently praying for? I will have to find out later on. Like other Filipinos, our anxiety grew by the day because of the uncertainties and the seeming darkness that lie ahead. The disruption from the familiarity of our daily routine was unthinkable. But more than anything else, it was the waiting game that was unbearable. What will happen to our jobs? We could not help but be anxious each time we are bombarded by news about companies laying off employees and businesses closing down. Before the pandemic, I was wishing for a new career path but I am not ready to lose my livelihood in an instant just yet. We do not have enough savings to get us through the days and I am worried for the future of my children. It felt like my whole existence was being constricted. The everyday stress, the feeling of unease, and the challenges of supporting a big household, when combined, is panic attack waiting to happen. Thankfully though, our companies assured us that we would continue to receive salary and that our leave credits would remain intact despite work suspension. That alone lifted a lot of burden from our shoulders and at least put us at ease that we would not starve in the days ahead. Still, the pandemic brought a different level of paranoia when it came to our health. More than anything, I was worried for the health of my loved ones. My wife is considered high-risk because of her hypertension. My children are still so small; the idea of them catching infection is unthinkable. Furthermore, my parents are both senior citizens living on their own at our home in the province. Who would take care of them should anything untoward happen? And lastly, I feared for my own health because I wanted to grow old with my wife and see my children become adults. However, these are things that we have little control over and worrying round-the-clock will not solve anything. We can be more cautious health-wise, yes, and we can limit our errands that require us to go out, but that is just about as much as we can do. Thus, instead of wallowing in despair and preoccupying my days with dread, I decided to look beyond the grimness of the situation. We can start something new and pick up from where we were at. After all, we were told by the government to stay home. Why not just take it as it is? At least, we would not have to go through the trouble of filing for a vacation leave, I thought in jest. Selfish as it may seem but we had to find a way to look at things creatively in order to survive, and that is when Unli Dapa finally came to our lives. To keep ourselves busy, we created a simple routine for our kids that included learning and play. Mornings were dedicated to getting early morning sun, reciting the alphabet, identifying colors, playing with shape sorters, watching educational videos, and letting our kids play with their cousins. Meanwhile, late afternoons would be the schedule of our “unlimited” playtime at the front lawn. But before that, I would prep my two-year-old son by putting on knee and elbow pads to cushion him when he fell down. That’s when I jokingly said that he could have Unli Dapa all he wants since he is well-protected anyway. That gave my son the confidence and the enthusiasm to carry on and enjoy the activities that he loved doing the most without any hesitation. From then on, I began calling our afternoon bonding as Unli Dapa. When it was time for our afternoon walk, I would cheerfully announce “Unli Dapa na!” and our toddler would be ecstatic. During the quarantine, we did not use our free time to learn new skills or try the different food trends that became popular that time. It was perfectly fine because I finally fulfilled my dream of having unlimited bonding with our kids and nothing could be more wonderful than that. Having lived in the restrictive confines of a condominium unit for years, unlimited playtime outdoors is a totally new experience for us and it was utterly heaven for the kids. What’s even better is that our routine worked wonders for our toddler. We observed that our firstborn, who was diagnosed with global developmental delay when he turned two years old, showed a lot of improvements as the days went on. He began to be more responsive when we said his name. He was making more eye contact when we talk to him, and his concentration has dramatically improved. He would also read letters and say the names of pictures that he recognized. We consider those as big achievements and they inspired us to push forward each day. With regard to my younger baby, we saw him grow right before our very eyes. He was born just three months before the lockdown. If you factor in our combined maternity and paternity leaves, then you would see that we have just been recently back to the office when the lockdown was imposed. There is nothing more joyful that seeing your child’s growth milestones unfold in front of you. As parents, it's really hard to describe the happiness that you feel when you see your children getting big, enjoying life, and laughing vigorously. As the days passed, I realized that the phrase Unli Dapa took on a deeper meaning in our lives because it helped us cope with the pandemic. Unli Dapa, without us immediately realizing it, got us through the days of uncertainties and what’s even better is that it came with the bonus of further strengthening the bond that holds our family together. For my family, Unli Dapa connotes the resiliency to bounce back from setbacks and the faith that there is still something good and bright to look forward to after each day. For me, Unli Dapa captures all those many little precious moments that I got to spend with my wife and kids during the community quarantine. And for many people, Unli Dapa is the mettle to continue moving forward and tackle the challenges that lie ahead because life is not about giving up. Life is about hurdling barriers because we see the good things that await us in the horizon. We may not always win, but at least we put up a good fight. Beyond all the chaos and drama of the pandemic, that is how I choose to remember the almost 100 days of being in isolation. The human spirit is strong. As long as it sees hope, it can take unlimited beatings. As long as it loves, it will not stop moving forward. As long as it seeks, it will trudge obstacles. Unli Dapa means that we may fall down a lot of times and we may commit many mistakes along the way, but there’s no limiting the number of times that we can get up, start again, and make progress. *** This story is an entry to ComCo Southeast Asia’s “Write to Ignite Blogging Project”. Dear Survivor, I Got Lost but Finally Found
Dear Survivor,
I’m Romeo Briones Jr., colleagues and friends calls me “Miyo” but my family known me as “Otoy”. I’ve been working for almost 8 years now. I am just a typical working professional who aims to grab a good digit on my work so I could suffice the needs of my family but there comes a time that I lose track on what I really wanted. Let me share with you, my story of failure, success, and moving forward.
Like a snap of a finger, a flashback of the past, where I started with my first-ever job as a Software Engineer in a Local IT Company. At that time, I really do not know where I am heading into when I applied for the role what matters at that moment is to look for a job, so I will not be too much burden with my family.
You know the pressure that some of your classmates in college already started working while I am still here wandering around the street of Salcedo in Makati.
Tumblr media
First time to walk into the underpass in Ayala
Tight slack, tucked in polo shirt (with sweaty under arms) roaming from one company to another submitting resume under the heat of the sun. I really cannot imagine how I could be able to withstand those situations back then and all you hear from them is that “we’re just going to call you if you’ll be able to be shortlisted.”
Days become weeks and weeks could become months.
I got tired of the waiting game that is why I grabbed the opportunity which my former college schoolmate was referring into.
Tumblr media
Our Office on my first job taken during the heavy rain and I can’t seem to go off work.
I thought having a job will somehow uplifts my status in life but that is not what had happened. After a year with my first job, I reevaluated myself and asked, “how would I achieve my goals in life? House, Car or Travel?”
When you are young, that fire in you is burning with passion in achieving those goals that is why I decided to look for an opportunity and change my path to Software Quality Assurance Engineer in an IT Multinational Company. I really learned a lot within my stay here.
I was able to strengthen and hone some skills such as testing, project management, and agile methodologies. Also, during that time I decided to push through with my master’s degree.
Tumblr media
My Library Card during my MBA Days
During that moment, I am still hesitant, but I do not take “No” for a challenge specially when you felt that kind of aura of achieving your career and personal goals. I am not an A-Lister, but I am a hardworking individual.
After 2 and a half years, I was able to get the ever-grateful diploma of mine and wear a toga again. It was so memorable for me since I couldn’t imagine I would be able to walk in the same aisle with my brothers.  (Yup, you heard it right, we are classmates during our masteral studies).
Tumblr media
Graduation Rites: Together with the Briones Brothers
Within that time, I appreciate those who questioned my worth and skills because through their constructive feedback I was able to reassess my strengths and weaknesses. Today, I am now living with my dreams as a Manager in one of a Fortune 500 Company.
No flowery words to say but just thankful with this journey since I have learned a lot from my experience, my disappointments, and my decisions.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, we are still the ones who create our own destiny, our future. We do not just stop learning in the 4 corners of the office. There is a wide space for learning even if you are from home. That is what pandemic has taught us.
Many had loss their job and loss their loved ones but to those who are fighting for their lives even with this uncertainty are the bravest. Not a disaster or pandemic will stop us from learning but when you stop believing that you cannot achieve your goals.
That’s why my dear fellow survivor, a message from me, don’t stop looking for opportunities and continue learning as we grow.
