Comcast Cares Day- Mubarak Kahloan
I volunteer every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the Shane VIctorino Boys & Girls Club. The Boys & Girls Club is located at  4001 N. Clarissa Street Philadelphia, PA 19140, in Nicetown. The coordinator of the Nicetown club, Shakir Johnson reached out to me in early march expressing the details of an event for the kids on Earth Day. So on Earth Day, April 22nd, I engaged in seven hours of stewardship. Every year, Comcast, one of the largest American corporations, host an event for Earth Day. They have teamed up with Boys & Girls Clubs in Philadelphia and New Jersey. The event they run is called “#ComcastCaresDay”. Comcast cares day is Comcasts’ way of giving back to the local community in which they operate daily business,. Through this stewardship event many workers, families, and inhabitants of the area come together to help for a great cause.
WHAT DID I DO?
Beginning at 7 AM on Saturday April 22nd, we were put into groups. After groups were assigned we begun to conduct our stewardship. My group was instructed to clean up all the garbage from the playground. Honestly it pained me seeing so many alcohol bottles and cigarette butts on a children’s playground. A playground for kids should inherently be clean and danger free. Once we completed cleaning up the playground around 9 AM, it was time for the mulch. Since the spring has just arrived, new mulch is needed for the ground. My team was instructed to even out and level the mulch all across the playground, using rakes. Oh man mulch smells horrible, but you don’t smell it as much when you know you’re doing something for a good cause. We finished laying down and leveling the mulch around 11 AM. once the mulch went down what comes next? that’s right woodchips! My group then was instructed to level out the woodchips since they could not just leave the mulch on top. we finished laying down the woodchips around 12:30PM. What followed was definitely more fun than cleaning up the garbage and laying down the new foundation for the playground. At 12:30 we begun to take the weeds out of the garden. There was so many weeds all around the edge of the playground and garden. Shakir felt that we could move the garden to the other side of the fence, and lay more mulch and woodchips down, so the kids have more room to play on the playground area. We fully removed the garden. Once that was done at 1:30, we then begun our final task of the day. building a garden box out of wood and place plants and soil inside the box then put it on the grass outside the playground. We put perennial flowers and small shrubs in the garden boxes.  We finished putting together the garden boxes around 3 PM. Then we began the final clean up, then it was time to play with the kids. overall this stewardship was amazing. I actively volunteer weekly with my local community and I can’t even begin to stress the importance of stewardship and giving back to your community. It truly is a awesome feeling of pride, knowing you made a difference to help the environment and the less fortunate.
WHAT CORE CONCEPTS DID YOU SEE IN ACTION?
I saw the core concept of Stewardship primarily. so many Comcast workers along with many local volunteers were willing to wake up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday, to give back to the community. That is beautiful to me it is so important to give back. Another core concept I saw was the idea of eliminating the gray vacant lots in our urban communities. Less than ten years ago, the Boys and Girls club i volunteer at was a vacant lot. Through hard work and dedication, that lot was turned into a beneficial community engagement center for under privileged kids. Since the club was growing so rapidly, four years ago Shane Victorino and other leaders decided to purchase the vacant lot adjacent to the club to accommodate to growing influx of children. The Boys & Girls Club actively conducts acts of stewardship for the community which really is starting to make a significant difference.
HOW DOES THIS PROJECT OR AGENCY ADDRESS COMMUNITY NEEDS?
The Boys & Girls clubs’ mission is to enable all  young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia will become one of the premier Boys & Girls Club organizations in the country, solidifying its position as the leading youth guidance and development agency in the community through quality staffing, facilities, and programs supported by financial stability and clearly defined standards. From the Boys and Girls Club Philadelphia website “UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF COMCAST AND DAVID L. COHEN, AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SNIDER YOUTH HOCKEY FOUNDATION, OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, BGCP WILL:Expand the reach of services by increasing the number of children served from 8,000 to 25,000:Meet the educational, social and emotional needs of members by introducing innovative new programs including: Internet Essentials Labs, the Call to Action Literacy Initiative, STEM Learning Labs and Kids CafesPartner with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation to create the Ralph J. Roberts Boys & Girls Club including a full service ice-hockey rinkEnsure financial sustainability through increased community and foundation supportEnsure the implementation of high quality programs by promoting Boys & Girls Club values, developing long-term relationships with youth and actively engaging the philanthropic communityEnhance the quality of facilities – BGCP will raise $41 million to support capital expenses and create an endowment”. The Boys and Girls Clubs here in Philadelphia along with comcast want the best for the children in our community and are doing their best efforts to do so, they need all of our community engagement to continue to make significant strides.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR ROLE IN THE PROJECT?
Whats most important is effort, care and showing up. My role with the Boys & Girls Club is making sure all my little “brothers and sisters” are making positive impacts and bettering themselves. My role is showing up and giving my care. I Thank God everyday for giving me what I have been blessed with having. Once you truly are grateful for what you have you should give back to the less fortunate and your community, its the right thing to do. Over the past two years I have become so close with some of the children of the club and they truly do keep my spirits high as they always put a smile on my face and help me through the long school week. Community engagement is my role. On a broader sense, I personally feel my role is to get my friends and family to start spending time at the club and make sure they do their part to help out these beautiful children.
HOW WELL ARE YOU ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SUPERVISOR AT THE COMMUNITY SITE?
I have known Shakir Johnson for almost two years now. Wow time flies. Shakir is one of the greatest human beings i have ever met. Shakir daily gives the club everything he can offer in every and any aspect. It is so easy to speak to Shakir because anything he is thinkig or going to say is the ethical right thing to say or do. Shakir seeks out to help anyone and is so outgoing that his vibe makes you never want to leave the club. Man I love Shakir I have learned so much from him about how to be a good person, man and leader. Shakir truly cares for these kids and I wish i could be half the man Shakir is.
Overall the Comcast Cares Day event at the Boys & Girls Club in Nicetown was phenomenal. I actively engage in volunteering and I can’t begin to express the importance and true beneficial impacts one can make in his/her community through stewardship.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The organization I chose was Comcast Corporation. Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is a global media and technology company with two primary businesses, Comcast Cable and NBCUniversal. Comcast Cable is one of the nation's largest video, high-speed Internet and phone providers to residential customers under the XFINITY brand and also provides these services to businesses. NBCUniversal operates news, entertainment and sports cable networks, the NBC and Telemundo broadcast networks, television production operations, television station groups, Universal Pictures and Universal Parks and Resorts.
Social media is critical in this industry because there is more than one communications provider out there for most areas of the country. Comcast is in the communications industry which provides customers with cable television, high speed internet access, digital voice, home security, and in the coming months, cellular service. The norms/standards for social media use is mostly customers who have an unresolved issue with Comcast or is upset with their services. It is rare that you will see a customer accommodation for outstanding customer service or customers who are satisfied with their service on social media outlets.
Taking care of customers over social media started out as a small favor to answer questions or concerns, but as time progressed customers have turned to social media instead of traditional modes of communication that included talking to a live representative on the phone or in person at a Comcast service center. Customers felt like questions and concerns were not being addressed by customer service representatives on the phone and in person and felt more confident in coming to a resolution knowing that someone higher up in the organization is hearing their frustrations.
The social media platforms that are mostly used to communicate with its customers are Facebook and Twitter. People are mostly active on these platforms when addressing their issues with Comcast about their service. As this has become a more popular method of communicating with Comcast, Comcast has created a social media team of representatives that answers questions and helps customers resolve their issues. The goal is to have as many social media representatives to answer customers questions and concerns as there is live agents answering phone calls. This is part of a new initiative to improve the customer experience at Comcast.
The social commerce strategies that Comcast is focused on is improving the customer experience. Comcast has been consistently rated as having the worst customer service in the industry, as well as having the worst customer service overall across all sectors. Comcast has taken the initiative to promise their customers with a better experience when you call Comcast with a question or concern and has also committed to making a better experience when a technician comes to your home. The social commerce marketing campaign is that Comcast "should fit into your life, not the other way around." They also have developed an app that you can download on your smartphone, the MyAccount app, that makes it easy to pay your bill, schedule appointments and troubleshoot your issue without having to call Comcast making it a more convenient option that offers a hassle free experience when dealing with Comcast.
There are critical relationships to making this happen. The communication must be fluid across all departments for this to happen. The MyAccount app must be functional and easy to use for the customer, there must be constant communication from service technicians to other departments that will allow them to "fit into the customers life, not the other way around," live agents must talk about the MyAccount app and assist the customer in downloading and using it, and Comcast must change the way they do business to do things right for the customer. This could include removing sales metrics for agents that are not in direct sales positions or hiring more service technicians in the field, for instance.
Comcast has a very strict policy how its employees communicates with its customers. The social media team is only allowed to communicate with customers through social media sites that is approved by the company. The approved sites for social media agents to communicate with customers is through a direct landing page to Comcast's Twitter or Facebook page or through the Comcast Cares page that was established only for the purposes of answering customer questions or concerns. The Twitter handle for Comcast Cares is https://twitter.com/comcastcares. On Facebook, Comcast communicates directly with customers on its Comcast Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/comcast/. This page is mainly for information purposes only, but social media representatives actively scan the page for customer complaints and questions. Comcast also uses LinkedIn as a way to communicate with its business customers at https://www.linkedin.com/company/comcast. Here, business customers can join in on discussions and Comcast social media agents can promptly answer questions or concerns that business customers may be experiencing. These are the most widely used platforms to resolve customer issues. There are platforms that are not approved by the company to answer questions. This would be social media landings such as https://www.reddit.com/r/Comcast/ or https://www.facebook.com/ComcastComplaints/ that are not approved sites for social media agents to interact in. These are monitored by the public relations and legal teams who are authorized on behalf of the company to respond to these less traditional methods of communication that are designed to damage the credibility of the company.
Overall, the social media marketing strategy is pretty solid. The company is actively engaged with the social media community and is listening and responding to its customers through multiple social media outlets. This is resulting in a better customer experience. The efforts put forth to improve the customer experience on the front line with call center agents, technicians and service center employees has resulted in less angry tweets and posts on social media outlets.
There is still a lot of work to be done to improve the customer experience. Comcast wants to be a better company and they want to provide a better customer experience but will not take the steps to fully improve the customer experience on the frontline. Comcast pressures their non direct sales departments to push sales onto the customer, when customers are trying to resolve an issue with their services, to the point of being terminated for not getting the customer to buy additional products and services. The agents have to focus on selling products and services to the customer instead of helping them with their problem. If Comcast wants to see less angry tweets and posts on social media, they need to change the way they operate as a company. If they could change as a company and truly offer the customer a great experience, Comcast could shift their social media efforts to other things besides responding to angry tweets and posts.

Comcast says BTN will soon be pulled from out-of-market customers
Tumblr media
It might just be a negotiating tactic, but watching some sporting events might become a lot harder for some Big Ten fans.
Big Ten sports fans might be in for a rude awakening if they live in select areas of the Comcast footprint. On Thursday, the telecom giant’s customer service account tweeted that the Big Ten Network will soon be removed from its lineup for some customers.
At first, Comcast said it was dropping the network entirely.
Hi Joe. I apologize for any inconvenience. At this time, BTN has been removed from our line-ups as of April 11th in most regions, while some regions are still under contract until May 10th. You can still watch most live games at https://t.co/zNsVuJ9XxK - Noah
— ComcastCares (@comcastcares) April 12, 2018
But clarified in a separate tweet with a qualifier:
Reached out to Comcast media relations regarding this Big Ten Network scrap. Here is official clarification from the corporate office. "In-market feed of Big Ten Network is still available - and will continue to be available - to our customers in Big Ten states." pic.twitter.com/q2ncJrbc87
— Brendan F. Quinn (@BFQuinn) April 12, 2018
Comcast’s website shows that it has one of the country’s biggest media markets within its footprint: Chicago.
Tumblr media
Xfinity.com
Big Ten Network programming includes multiple live football and basketball games every week during both sports’ respective seasons. If this change goes into full effect next month, you could still watch the Big Ten Network in Chicago, but maybe not in other big metro areas like Atlanta or Miami.
There are a couple of caveats here. The biggest is that this could just be public posturing by Comcast during a pending negotiation with the Big Ten Network. Cable companies and networks go through this kind of thing all the time during negotiations.
How this usually works is that, as the imminent contract renewal deadline nears, the network will lobby customers to call their cable company and demand that the network be kept on the air. Sometimes it’ll put a message on the channel itself telling customers when service will cut off.
The impasse is typically related to subscriber fees. Those are the portions of your bill that go directly to the network every month (between $0.39 and $1 for BTN). Networks want to inflate them so they generate more revenue, and cable companies want to lower them.
BTN’s out-of-market fee is ~0.45 per subscriber per month. Meaning this is still likely a multimillion $$ hit for the network depending on how this carriage battle is sorted out.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) April 12, 2018
As that Comcast tweet notes, subscribers can still watch live games (the main leverage that sports cable networks have in negotiations) on Big Ten’s streaming service, BTN2Go. But to do that, fans will need a cable subscription. It’s unclear what will happen to BTN2Go if the network gets blacked out on May 10 for out-of-market customers. For now, Comcast is still listed as a BTN2Go provider.
We’ve reached out to both Big Ten Network and Comcast media relations for comment on the situation.
