PART 1 - Characters from the Avatar novels that people never talk about. Yingsu is a combustionbender who randomly joined Yangchen's Team Avatar. She was also one of the earliest combustionbenders in history and one of the three firebenders who were part of the Unanimity Project.

Note
I am genuinely surprised that the lists of dumb zvtara takes don't include the "change Zuko for Sokka in the lightning scene and it will start looking incestuous". Because it's like, one of the dumbest things they say.
Canon cases of Sokka protecting Katara:
Sokka protecting Katara from falling into a freezing sea after SHE broke the iceberg: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/101/images/avatar-the-last-airbender1x01_0289.jpg https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/101/images/avatar-the-last-airbender1x01_0299.jpg
Sokka shielding Katara with his body from whatever sits in this round piece of ice that SHE broke open: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/101/images/avatar-the-last-airbender1x01_0455.jpg
Sokka shielding Katara with his body while a freaking AVATAR is destroying the temple: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/108/images/avatar-the-last-airbender1x08_1519.jpg
Sokka attacking another AVATAR who dared to burn Katara (and then he will also blame the legendary firebender who is able to incinerate Sokka in seconds if being pissed): https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/116/images/avatar-the-last-airbender1x16_1169.jpg
Sokka jumping in front of Katara to scare away the wolf-bat: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/202/images/avatar-the-last-airbender2x02_0837.jpg
Sokka shielding Katara with his body to protect her from the third AVATAR (twice this episode): https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/205/images/avatar-the-last-airbender2x05_1337.jpg
Sokka attacking the goddamn SPIRIT to protect Katara: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/210/images/avatar-the-last-airbender2x10_1588.jpg
Sokka jumping in front of Katara to protect her from angry villagers: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/303/images/avatar3x03_1424.jpg
Sokka shielding Katara with his body during the attack of an almost invincible combustionbender: https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/cap-that.com/tv/avatar/312/images/avatar3x12_1119.jpg
So, apparently, this all is fine, a normal sibling relationship. But imagine Sokka protecting Katara by jumping between her and a lightning... and THIS will look incestous... because a normal brother will ONLY do this for his sister if he wants to fuck her... right?
rIGHT, ZVTARIANS?
Zutarians LOVE insisting that any moment between Zuko and Katara MUST be inherently romantic in nature. It doesn't matter if they're talking about a hug, a big sacrifice, a fight, saying hello to each other, sitting next to each other while having lunch with their friends, teaming up during a fight, it WILL be talked about like it's something only love interest could do, even if we have tons of exemples of them doing all of those things with other characters that they don't have any kind of romantic feelings for.
And it would have been fine for them LIKE those moments and want to interpret them with shipper goggles, or adding them to their fanfics, or making fanart of it. But they are not happy with that. They need EVERYONE to look at it the same way the do - and as a bonus, expect those minor things to replace explicitly romantic moment between Katara and Aang, or Mai and Zuko.

Suyin Beifong: The Strategist?
Suyin has a fascinatingly adaptive and acute mind for battle and strategy, which is quite underappreciated by the fandom for the brief time we have known her as a character. She is implied to know rare, obscure styles and techniques like Combustion bending. She is privy to their weak spot, as shown when she calmly and assertively tells the others of P'Li's weakness. That, or she was really into Uncle Sokka's stories as a child, which still hints at her being very attentive and good at retaining information. She is also self-aware and makes remarkably good use of her home turf even when under the pressure of her self-proclaimed impenetrable city being infiltrated. ['The Terror Within' Transcript] Asami: "There's no way to cross that moat." Suyin: [Looks up at the ceiling dome.] "We don't need to cross it. Lin and I can drop in from the dome on cables."
Tumblr media
Lin: [Sarcastically.] "That's a great idea. Except we'll get blown up the second that third-eyed freak sees us." Suyin: "She's a combustionbender. If one of you can stun her, her powers will be knocked out temporarily."
Tumblr media
Another example is during "Enter the Void," where she competently disputes with seasoned fighters and established leaders in Lin and Tonraq over the best action to approach the Red Lotus. Here, she makes crucial points about numbers, terrain, and how to safely and efficiently use their assets to their advantage. She even comes up with the plan they would execute later. ['Enter The Void' Transcript]
Tumblr media
Suyin: [Places an airship figurine in front of the temple.] "I say we make our approach from the west, drop down from the airship on cables, ambush these Red Lotus low-lives before they know what hit them." Lin: "It will never work. That Combustion Lady will pick us off one by one." Suyin: "You have a better idea on how to save the airbenders?" Lin: "Yeah. We come up from the valley, scale the side of the mountain and take them off guard." Tonraq: "That could work." Suyin: "And give them the high ground? No, if their lavabender spots us, he'll melt the mountainside and us with it."
Tumblr media
Suyin: "I think I figured a way to play this so that the airbenders and Korra all come out in one piece." Lin: "How?" Suyin: "Zaheer doesn't know how many of us there are, so we have the numbers advantage. I say we split into two teams: [Places the airship figurine on the temple.] Mako, Bolin, and Asami will take the airship up to the temple. [Places a Metal Clan figurine on a mountain.] Meanwhile, my metalbenders, Tonraq, Lin, and I will get in position below Laghima's Peak."
Tumblr media
I believe this is another underlying reason why Tenzin and Raiko were so adamant about her being the person to handle the Earth Kingdom situation beyond just her city's resources and her status as a Beifong.
Tumblr media
Even someone like Kuvira emulating her leadership and tactical qualities (and subsequently taking them to their logical extreme) after Suyin speaks volumes of her ability.

Debated about sharing this for a while, but figured why not just post it. My combustionbender OC, Jun, is transgender. I’ve been wanting to make a trans character for a while. As a trans woman myself, it’s important to me to show some representation for the trans community in my writing. I’m just sad that it took me this long to finally do it. I was kind of nervous about it, to be honest, mostly because I’ve only recently accepted myself as a trans woman and was nervous about being able to represent the community accurately.

I've been thinking about my post-apocalyptic combustionbender avatar again... and also been thinking about a potential fic I could write about her (if people are interested)? Gave her a new name, tweaked her design, and also thought of a hypothetical name for the story I would write.
I might still fiddle with the title if I do actually write something to be more in line with the Avatar novels (ie, have Zaika's name in the title).
Anyway, the art is definitely a glow up from the last thing I sketched of this character. Looking at that old art made me cringe.

i didn't sleep on it i just have to get all my thoughts out. the books been out for YEARS okay so i know everyone else probably has said everything i wanna say but idc
i don't actually know what i expected from the yangchen novels. i was always intrigued by yangchen in particular; she only got a few lines in avatar, but the ones she did were incredibly fascinating - telling aang that the avatar must give up their spiritual needs for the sake of the world was a line that made her one of the most intriguing of past avatars to me - glad she got novels that did the extrapolation of that justice
i love how yangchen is given that timeless ancient wisdom feel even while young through her innate connection to her past lives. how this makes the duty of the avatar even more clear - how she vehemently knows how much each avatar regrets... to try and not make the same mistakes, yet history is a cycle, and humanity is still humanity in the present or past or the future. its one of the best parts of the novel in general to me---yangchen, and the avatar's, eternal struggle if humanity is worth it---the scene at the end with yangchen crying to jetsun about how she doesn't want it... oh it broke my heart
yangchen in general breaks my heart throughout the novels. again, there is never a moment where i doubt yangchen has a heart. yangchen, throughout the novel, has to do incredibly manipulative, cold, underhanded tactics, yet there is never a single moment where i doubted she did those things out of compassion. manipulation done out of compassion is one of my favorite concepts. thank you yangchen.
i actually adore the way yangchens novels are given dual protagonists with contrasting POVs. one of my favorite things is outsider POVs, and i love the fact we get to know yangchen inside AND outside of her head in her novels. what does she think of herself and how do other people see her?
(yangchen carries so much guilt and is so mean to herself sometimes so kaviks pov is refreshing to me simply because he cares about her so much. the vehement upset over her being banished when shes punishing herself killed me dead)
the dual protagonist thing is also REALLY good for the intrigue/spy/manipulation theme. yangchen and kavik do nothing but LIE for PAGES so its fascinating to see what each of them is lying about and why. its also great because certain chapters simply wouldnt hit the same if told in a different POV. also loved how scenes were moved around so characters were even lying to the audience.
love the setting in general. the growing technology, the international politics, these multinational cities on trade routes.... i love how it fleshes out the avatar world so well, that the nations had not always been so divided, nor will they always be so divided. the world feels lived in with ever shifting borders and attitudes and its so fascinating.
oh also the creative use of bending is SOOOOOO. well. i need 500 spy thrillers with the avatar universe because the first scene alone with kavik bending the water in a wall to get to an upper floor was so good. plus the realistic stakes of things like frostbite... peak.
yangchen and kavik are genuinely so funny. in such a serious setting with stakes so high, them basically looney tunes hitting each other with hammers is fucking hilarious. yangchen really does throw that man around everywhere - definitely fits the fact that avatar originally was an animated kids show because i see so many of those moments animated in my brain.
the younger siblingisms were crazy. i love how they bond over it. the 50000 ways yangchen and kavik parallel and foil could keep me up at night sorry.
chaisee might be the antagonist of all time like truly im obsessed with her. i dont have enough brainpower to even write down thoughts beyond that she was genuinely peak i LOVED her. her mindset from how she grew up to how she came up with combustionbending to how she views violence... how she seems like such a reasonable person, has such fascinating philosophies, even reads air nomad books - yangchen plays a game of sparrowbones with her, talks to her about her baby, yet chaisee has also done truly horrific actions. and in the end she still keeps her family but loses her legacy... guys ill think about chaisee forever. truly character of all time. i love how the main antagonist of the books is a mother and she genuinely cares and loves that kid.
okay in general family over the world as a theme is SOOOOO. okay the kavik kalyaan shit was crazy. like genuinely so nuts. and also so fascinating. kavik betraying the avatar and his city and everyone - for his brother. because he cares about his brother! because he loves his family! people will do horrible actions for people they care about. vice versa, kavik making up for this betrayal by using his own brother's love as a weapon is SO FUCKING CRAZY. its just genuinely my favorite thing ever in the entire world. give me 500 years to talk coherently about it.
i need to know the kalyaan chaisee relationship going on because the reveal that was his baby was 1. crazy and 2. they genuinely like each other HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO. i should be a fly on the wall for their relationship. NOW.
juji was truly peak ever. i loved his introduction. i loved how he was seeking forgiveness from someone who couldnt forgive him. i love how seeking forgiveness for unforgivable actions is such a main theme throughout. i love the hints to the yuyan, and as much as i wanted to know more about the backstory, it feels like there was so much implied by what was and wasn't said... perhaps, simply, he killed his brother in a similar way to how those kids being trained on that island got more and more violent over time in order to survive. who knows?
i love how hes 100 percent ride or die for yangchen like truly will stab kavik wherever the fuck. character ever. funny as shit.
the water husbands ooh the armbands! but also the way they relate to the main theme too, the way family betrayed them during the platinum affair and how kavik and kalyaan are a contrast to that... not forgetting water tribe values of family... OKAY!
i literally panicked so bad when they mentioned yingsu dead i was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. so glad she's not and she potentially joins the group. too bad there's not a third novel so i can't see it.... come on now...
god there's so many good scenes i really can't get over it.
yangvik being implied but not canon hit crazy actually like it was peak. i hope they have some crazy qpr situationship for 50 years where no one knows whats going on not even them.
to be honest yangchen just broke my heart again and again and again. whatever. its not like i care. at all.
i'll be back with more thoughts when i actually sleep on it.
finished both novels. what the hell <3

Why do we love the red lotus so much?
It’s no secret that among the avatar/lok fandom that the red lotus in season 3 are some of the legend of korra’s most beloved villains. I started to wonder why that is, and I’m writing down all my thoughts because of course I am.
1: Cool character designs
Visually, the red lotus are super-interesting, especially when you put them altogether. Zaheer’s all-gray monochrome look and his little change from long hair and beard to baldness, and his eyebrow scar. Ghazan and his tattoos and that mustache he grew when he was ten. Ming-Hua is small but mighty, waterbends without arms and uses said waterbending AS ARMS, another shining example of the avatar franchise’s portrayal of disability. And P’li being a seven-feet-tall combustionbender with a cool braid. They look cool. What more do you need?
2: They’re human
Probably part of what makes the red lotus so popular is that they feel pretty human. Obviously Zaheer is the leader of the group, and I’d personally have loved some more moments reminiscent of the seriously? right now?” scene, but they’re clearly all besties. Ghazan, as mentioned above, complaining about P’li and Zaheer making out in the truck; P’li getting a piggyback ride from Ming-Hua on her way out of prison and calling her a show-off; Ming-Hua calling the boys ugly mugs; Ghazan commenting, upon seeing Zaheer fly for the first time, that “i guess [Zaheer] doesn’t need a ride”; etc. They have distinct personalities from each other, with Zaheer being the planner and leader, P’li being quiet and menacing (unless she’s with her friends and her man), Ghazan being the chill, laid-back one, and Ming-Hua being snarky and hot-tempered. P’li and Zaheer obviously have their romance, which is sweet even if fans (*cough* me *cough*) would’ve loved to see more of it. They work incredibly well together as a team and in battle. Ghazan worries about P’li when she’s injured at Zaofu, P’li gets mad at Zaheer when he gets discovered on Air Temple Island and alerts the city to their presence, Ming-Hua and Ghazan are visibly surprised, sad, and confused all at once when Zaheer achieves flight and they learn that P’li is dead, Ming-Hua has the odd habit of sitting in trees and the backs of chairs instead of the actual chair...there are plenty of little moments that drive home the fact that they’re people who care deeply about each other.
3: They’re badass af
I mean, seriously. Zaheer was arguably more feared than the other three even as a non-bender, and is beaten with airbending only by his overconfidence and airbending inexperience against strong bending masters. P’li is a combustion bender who can a) talk, and b) curve her combustion beams. Ghazan is the franchise’s first canon lavabender, and Ming-Hua is its first bender who’s missing limbs. She supposedly uses her torso and legs to waterbend, despite the popular fan theory that she also uses at least some psychic bending. They have unique abilities that expand the possibilities of bending, make for unique and interesting fight scenes, and give our heroes a genuine challenge. Neither side is ridiculously powered-down; Bolin and Mako put up a good fight against Ming-Hua and Ghazan, for example, given their two seasons of battle experience and previous pro-bending careers, but still get their asses kicked and are captured, because they’ve never fought these kinds of benders before! How the hell do you stop a lady who can basically waterbend with her mind? How can Bolin stop Ghazan when all of Bolin’s ammunition is thrown right back at him in an even deadlier form?
4: No canon backstories
Hear me out here: I do agree that we could’ve gotten more hints of their backstories and how they all met, etc., but they don’t have a canon backstory like Amon, giving them that air of mystery. I love speculating on their pasts, which I couldn’t do if they had them in canon. But idk, I feel like this just depends on what you like in your villains.
In short, a large reason the red lotus is beloved is because they’re so different from anything we’ve previously seen in the franchise. They’re fresh, new faces who give us what is widely considered Legend of Korra’s best season.

Day 7: Rec List Saturday
AMVs:
“Faded” by gracieon.
I just love the giffed cuts above, and the song + dialogue clips give me so many feels.
“Sorry” by Fandom.com
I’ve been listening to this one a lot while writing my longfic Lightning Sun. The song by Halsey dives into the psychology of someone who fundamentally believes they don’t deserve love and/or doesn’t understand or believe how other people could love them. I think with all her abandonment issues, Katara would probably vibe with this.
“Easier” by TeamHodgins
Another one for the longfic feels. At the beginning of Lightning Sun, Zuko is in prolonged recovery from Azula’s strike, thus the lyrics, “I’m stuck, I’m stuck, I’m stuck here in my skin.”
The story is told mostly through the pov of Katara, who’s on a journey of self-discovery to understand her own issues with abandonment and what they mean for her feelings towards Zuko; hence, “Tell me it gets easier, tell me it gets easier, tell me it gets easier, that I’ll figure it out.”
“I’d let you win” by quinn darley
Pretty self-explanatory for Zuko. “I’d let you in. I’d let you win my heart again.”
“killing me to love you” by exhalence
Not listening to it much recently. Real longfic vibes, especially with these lyrics:
I want to keep faith, but you're making it harder (but it’s killing me to love you)
I’m reaching out now, but you’re pulling me under (but it’s killing me to love you)
I give you my heart just to watch you waste it (but it’s killing me to love you)
And I can’t let go when you still need saving (but it’s killing me to love you)
In case you couldn’t tell, Lightning Sun is gonna be a slow-burn angst fic with a bittersweet ending. Sorry not sorry 😬👀
“you’re my home” by [17’s] kelly
Like previous entry, not listening to it as much recently but still lovely ️
“into you” by mavensinclair
Recent discovery. Makes me soft 🥺
Fanfics:
Before moving onto the fic recs, I just wanna make a quick note about my preferences. Most of the following will be rated M or above. I’ve been an honest-to-God adult for a few years now, so I like fics that deal with more mature themes and adult problems.
I’m also a slut for angst. You will find very little fluff ahead (though some of these have their moments). Proceed accordingly. And not to be a hipster about Zutara fic, but there are definitely some out there that don’t get enough love, namely my top three (listed in order).
What makes a fic really stand out for me? It’s pretty simple actually. It has to be something that’s a little different, a little off-the-wall, with vivid worldbuilding. But MOST importantly, it has to make me deeply feel something. If a scene sticks in my head even months afterwards due to a combination of vivid sensory detail and visceral emotional reactions, that fic will be on this list.
Two Worlds Collide by mangx3
My co-captain @antarcticasx and I welcome you aboard the TWC Supremacy. Fear not; though the voyage may at first prove daunting and ill-fated, rest assured that you’re in for an emotionally satisfying journey that promises to rip your heart out in all the best ways.
No, but seriously, this fic is so much better than it has any right to be. I will admit, the frame structure of the tale is not to my taste, and some plot points in the first act may seem contrived. But my god, do you go on a journey with this fic. Bc it was written over the course of four years, you actually get to witness mangx3 improve as a writer. By the end, the storytelling is 💋👌🏻 And if that’s not enough for you, at one point, Zuko refers to Katara—in her absence, mind—as both “my heart” and “my life.” I just... I die 💀
Each Other by jennibare
Aang is dead + the aftermath fic. The story is well balanced between both Zutara and the steambabies.
Love Thy Enemy by RedNovember
Kind of a soulmate au. Worldbuilding is top-notch. And the climax in the third act? My god, the imagery, the emotion, just... 😭
Rumour Has It by @fictionissocialinquiry
BluePaint bible. Constantly torn between wanting to read more Blue Spirit/Painted Lady fic and knowing that none will ever compare. (I say this as someone with a BluePaint outline in the works.) This is also like my go-to re-read, though I usually stop around chapter 73 bc of that scene *fans self* and also I can’t put myself through the partial heartbreak of the ending again. Waiting to start the sequel once it’s complete.
Strength by tini243
Fair warning: this fic is incomplete and abandoned. HOWEVER, it follows the story through most of the second act, so I still left feeling satisfied. It’s a soulmate au that ends with casually married Zutara revealing their relationship to the gaang, and there’s just something so delicious about that drama.
Hopeless by @zutaradreams
The structure of this story is so unique in the way it’s sandwiched between a prologue and epilogue told from a side character pov. Plus, it’s told out of order which makes it fun to put the pieces together. Zutara build a life in Ba Sing Se when all hell breaks loose. Also, steambaby! Another go-to re-read.
Gods & Monsters by wannabewonderbender (wannabend)
If you want BAMF Katara, this is the BAMF Katara fic. Ending is a little abrupt, but I enjoyed it all the same.
The Things We Hide by Lykegenia
The worldbuilding in this au is amazing. More BAMF Katara. And no spoilers, but the ending is exactly what I would want for Ursa.
The Fifth Column by chromeknickers
Be warned: this one is dark, with incredibly dubious consent. The final showdown kinda drags on a bit, but the worldbuilding is great. Ending sets up a sequel that’s never been started, so if that bothers you, probably avoid.
WIPs:
Our Desires series by @laadychat
With each update, Sab never fails to make me feel like I’mma spontaneously combustionbend. Absolutely adore ❤️
Smoke & Mirrors by @nellasera
Blutara that leads to capture!fic trope; or, everything I’m a slut for. Dying for the next update 😭😭😭
Those Who Do Not Learn... Are Doomed to Repeat by @homeagainrose
Time-travel established relationship/married Zutara in teenage bodies. Honestly, what more could you possibly want? Also dying for update.

MY TIME HAS COME.
I can't draw so I made this with a picrew creator but I made this character with me as a base (I have pasty white skin, brown eyes, dirty brown hair, my favorite color is yellow as is reflected through her necklace, and if I'd choose any element to be I would be Earth).
Her name is Suka (pronounced Soo-Kah). She's the next Avatar following the death of Korra. She can't bend fire or air since her connection with the past avatars was reset during the events of Harmonic Convergence, where Raava was destroyed and reborn. She was born in Zaofu to a male airbender and his earthbender wife. Said airbender is the child of Bolin and Opal. She moved from Zaofu to Republic City to live with Zhao Li, her combustionbender girlfriend.
Sadly, she was banned from the city following the election of Liu Wei whose policy was extremely anti-Avatar. He believed that the Avatar was too dangerous and created more problems than it solved. After an incident where the Avatar broke into his residence in an attempt to figure out what his true intentions were, she created a very public mess which solidified his chances in the race.
Atla is one of the fandoms where I see the least amount of ocs and I love insert ocs! Even if they’re “cringe”. I don’t mind self instead either! I like seeing stuff like that in almost any fandom I’m in

what would jun have gotten up to in her spy work in the earth kingdom?? how messed up is that line of work??
(for example. what if jun went undercover as a sex worker? or would that not be in character for her? adds a bit more mystery to xianzu's father if that's smthn you'd want)
It depends on where she was told to go, really.
In Zaofu: She was mostly stealing copies of their railway project. The Fire Nation wanted it to improve their own transportation systems. She also sent information about any other technology that might’ve been interesting back to her handler as well. Not to mention plenty of potential dirt on politicians in Zaofu, in case it could give the Fire Nation a leg up in future political and business deals. She was also tracking anyone who was wanted by the Fire Nation government, since Suyin has a history of giving people second chances and will take in people with criminal histories.
In Ba Sing Se: It’s mostly political intrigue. Learning secrets about the city’s nobles. As well as trying to get into the Royal Palace. She succeeded once, but had her cover blown when a Fire Nation nobleman recognized her from a party they’d both attended in the past. He called her by her real name and the Dai Li heard it. The resulting chase forced Jun to blow up several rooms in the palace, as well as injuring several Dai Li agents using her combustionbending. She spent two very long weeks avoiding capture as she tried to find a way to escape the city.
Omashu: Was a little more tame, for once. She was mostly just watching a man who had stolen some military hardware from the Fire Nation. Her job on that mission was specifically just to observe until she found out where the stolen equipment was being held, then destroy it before it could be sold or moved out of the city.
Northern Water Tribe: Izumi had some bad vibes from Unalaq and sent Jun to poke around. She did end up finding something that connected him to the Red Lotus, but she was caught in the act. And in her desperate rush to escape, which involved more uses of her combustionbending, she lost the evidence. She hasn’t been back since, and doesn’t plan to go back if she can help it. (She hates the cold.)
Those are the most “interesting” missions I can think of right now. The rest is mostly just spying on certain politicians, hunting criminals wanted by the Fire Nation, and just generally keep track of potential threats to her nation.
Thanks for the ask!

Yeah so about the spirit australia thing with @commiejet (named such because of how australia used to be where they sent criminals and this is about criminals being sent to a hostile area and trying to leave it)
Check out the rest of the spirit Australia tag for info on the concept and genesis
The main concept:
Three criminals are sent into the spirit world... somehow. I'll figure that out.
They were part of a group that did crime and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
They enter the spirit world, attempt to find their way back through the central spirit portal in republic city, and have to fight off spirits and White Lotus squads sent to capture them.
The reason they have to use the portals and not just meditate is because they
A) dont have a strong enough spiritual connection and
B) if they meditate back they'll probably just end up back in prison.
Wait, what happens if a projected spirit goes through a spirit portal? Guess we'll find out.
The spirit world can be whatever size it feels like, so it spends most of this fic as a vast natural land.
The criminals don't have bending abilities in the spirit world because they projected in. They were brought into the SW due to a large discharge of spiritual energy, which will be revealed to be... something.
(It may seem like I want to generate an air of suspense but really I have no idea.)
After their first entrance into the spirit world, they are attacked by some pure-animal spirits. This results in deformations and abilities similar to in the Avatar Wan story and the Turf Wars comic with Tokuga.
The main characters (appearance) are:
Sonam, an Air Nomad. In his human form, his head has small fuzzy hairs, singed at the edges. During their five years of imprisonment, he was not allowed a razor and resorted to his friend's firebending abilities to 'shave' his head. Due to his position as a criminal, he has severely limited airbending power that it's more or less negligible. He took a Future Industries shock glove from the White Lotus guards sent into the spirit world with them. After his spirit deformation, the glove partially fused with his left hand, making the pads of his lionlike paw electrically charged. In addition, he now has a taller frame, slightly animalistic legs, a deformed right side of the face, and claws in both his lion and human hand. He also has a large mane that now covers his air nomad tattoo.
Amala, a firebender. In her human appearance, she is gaunt and tall, with the last few remnants of a combustionbender's third eye tattoo barely visible. In the prison, her hands are covered in aluminum gloves to stop her from firebending without burning her hands. There is an iron band around her head, which covers her tattoo and stops her from combustionbending without blowing up her own head. She takes no weapon from the Lotus Guards, as her two comrades took the only weapons that the nonbender guards brought with them had. She gets transformed into a spiderlike hybrid, with pointier, clawed fingers, two additional arms, and additional eyes. She also has chi-blocking abilities. She has not been able to use her bending for almost five years now, and cannot do so in the spirit world either. It is painful.
Trai is from the Foggy Swamp tribe. He could never bend. He's quiet and thoughtful, but underneath that is a malicious and vengeful streak. He utilizes a sword taken from a Lotus Guard and a second blade he carved from a tree and a massive dead spirit's skeleton. He cares deeply for his comrades, and feels remorse for bringing them into the life they now lead. He recreated a leaf hat in the Spirit World. He has a beard and smallish mustache. After his spiritual deformation, he gained attributes of a chameleon. He now has patches of scales across his body, fully covering his lower half and right arm. His eyes are also more sunken, and he has a line of spikes across his back and head.
Abilities:
They all have enhanced strength and thinking capacity.
Sonam has even more strength, his electric paw, and a clawed hand.
Amala has chi-blocking, extra arms, and the ability to create webbing.
Trai has swordfighting, partial camoflauge abilities, and spirit sense. Spirit sense is what I call the ability the swampbenders use to communicate through the vines. It can be done through spirit vines in canon, and now that Trai is part spirit, I'm saying he can do it too.
This would probably be a weekly series once I create the outline.
